Administrator Altostrata Posted December 1, 2012 Administrator Share Posted December 1, 2012 http://www.medpagetoday.com/PrimaryCare/AlternativeMedicine/36197 Aromatherapy: Two Hours Is Too Much By Cole Petrochko, Staff Writer, MedPage Today Published: November 30, 2012 Action Points Aromatherapy can help patients relax by initially reducing heart rate and blood pressure significantly, but those benefits may be reversed if exposure lasts more than an hour, a study found. Note that exposure to the oil vapor for periods of 90 to 120 minutes was significantly associated with increased blood pressure and heart rate. Aromatherapy can help patients relax by initially reducing heart rate and blood pressure significantly, but those benefits may be reversed if exposure lasts more than an hour, researchers found. Presence of essential oil vapor -- the vapor from aromatherapy -- was significantly associated with reduced blood pressure and heart rate from 15 minutes to 60 minutes after exposure (P<0.05) among a sample of healthy spa workers in Taiwan, according to Kai-Jen Chuang, PhD, of Taipei Medical University in Taiwan, and colleagues. However, exposure to the oil vapor for periods of 90 to 120 minutes was significantly associated with increased blood pressure and heart rate (P<0.05), they wrote online in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology. "The inhalation of air pollutants has been reported to induce pulmonary oxidative stress, inflammation, and autonomic dysfunction," they noted, adding that those "biological processes may also be applied to the adverse effects of the total volatile organic compound exposure on cardiovascular health." The researchers analyzed associations between heart and blood pressure with oil vapors generated by an aromatherapy machine known as an ultrasonic atomizer in 100 healthy, nonsmoking Taiwanese spa workers. Participants were mostly female (51%); younger (average age 22.5); and had an average heart rate of 71.2 beats/minute, an average systolic blood pressure of 123.5 mmHg, and an average diastolic blood pressure of 84.1 mmHg. Each participant received a baseline screening and was exposed to essential oil vapor for 2 hours at three study site visits. During the 2-hour exposures, participant blood pressure and heart rate were recorded at 15-minute intervals. The researchers also measured levels of volatile organic compound -- the aromatherapy oils -- in the environment during the 2-hour period at 1-minute intervals. Average levels of volatile organic compounds were 82.2 parts per billion, and levels of aromatherapy oils, blood pressure, heart rate, and study room humidity and temperature did not vary significantly between visits. Mean declines in blood pressure and heart rate were greatest at 45 minutes into the aromatherapy sessions.... Declines in systolic blood pressure and heart rate were smallest at 15 minutes, while diastolic blood pressure declines were smallest at 60 minutes. At 90 minutes to 120 minutes, heart rate and blood pressure were significantly higher (P<0.05), and were all highest at 120 minutes -- mean systolic blood pressure was elevated by 2.19 mmHg (95% CI 0.79 to 3.59), diastolic blood pressure was elevated by 1.79 mmHg (95% CI 0.66 to 2.86), and heart rate was raised by 1.70 beats/minute (95% CI 0.93 to 2.47). They concluded that 1-hour aromatherapy exposure "could be a useful method of stress relief," but that prolonged exposure for over an hour "may be harmful to cardiovascular health in young, healthy subjects." They added that future studies could measure long-term cardiopulmonary and psychological outcomes of vaporized essential oil exposure. The authors noted that the study was limited by missing measures for other possible environmental air pollutants, limited intra-individual measures, additional unmeasured confounders, relevance of short-term heart rate and blood pressure effects on long-term outcomes, and limited numbers of measures from participants. The study was funded by the National Science Council of Taiwan. The authors declared no conflicts of interest. bubbles
I like aromatherapy but I'm totally unscientific about it. lionboy
Hi mm100 There may be something in that then? I was having really bad episodes that would last about a week. At the time I was looking for external triggers. I now believe these to be all part of the side effects of the ssri. Who's to say if ingesting an Mao inhibitor, be it through the pores, contributed on that occasion. I certainly wouldn't discount the idea 100%. 1999 50mg citalopram / celexa for anxiety and depression. dec 2007 50mg - 40mg, march 2009 40mg - 30mg, july 2009 30mg - 20mg, aug 2009 20mg - 30mg, sept 2009 30mg - 20mg, jan 2010 20mg - 30mg, july 2010 30mg - 25mg (one 20mg and half a 10mg tablet), july 2010 - july 2013 25mg July 2013 began tapering down in 1mg increments, dissolving the tablets in water and using a syringe as suggested by Rhi. Peonies
I don't know how many people here are fond of Aromatherapy, but I find that along side sound therapy, it is very soothing. I have recently found that in the United States, in the "Walgreens" stores there is a brand of products called, "Nature's Truth". They sell inexpensive and quality aromatherapy ointments, sprays, candles and much more. It is also gluten and paraben free. They also carry different uses, like for example the Good Nite spray I have is not only small and portable but really helps me with my insomnia. I hope this can be of some use to some members here, Cymbalta, Zoloft, Effexor: All during the past two years. When I was prescribed them, I would either take one pill a day for 2 days and the stop usage all together. Pristiq: Taken for 2/3 weeks around April 2017. unknown dosage. Discontinued cold turkey. Xanax: All thought 2017 here and there for panic attacks only. Focalin 10 mg: Taken on May 1st, 2017, discontinued after 3 days of usage. Cold Turkey. Hospitalized May 13th, 2017. Trazodone 10 mg: First doses around May 14th, 2017, The doses were taken sporadically for sleep along side Xanax and Triazolam. Stopped these cold turkey Xanax & Triazolam: unknown dosage, used for sleep whenever I needed. Stopped usage cold turkey. Paxil 40 mg: First dose around May 14th, 2017. Then I began having side effects so I found this website and began taper. September: Started Taper, dropped to 27 mg. Paxil Beginning of October: Dropped to 24 mg. Paxil October 12th 2017 & Current Dose: Dropped down to 21 mg Paxil.

kirby
I use a brand called doterra. Its blends are lovely especially serenity and balance. Otherwise, I go to tj maxx and look there, they always have some where I live. The brands for that one I use are naturelove and zevana and nature's truth. Also I accidentally used diluted tea tree oil on my dog once (was on my hands after I used it on myself). I realized she felt bad and looked it up and then gave her a shower immediately. Going to avoid that next time. My medications were short-timed and low-dosed, but still affected my life a lot; all this is in 2017. June 21 - June 28 (inpatient) - 300 mg lithium June 6 - July 14 (inpatient then outpatient) - 10 mg zyprexa July 14 - July 17 (outpatient try taper) - 7.5 mg zyprexa July 18 - July 21 (outpatient doctor changed) - 10 mg zyprexa July 21 - July 24 (outpatient doctor said got worse) - 15 mg zyprexa July 25 - now (quit ct with family supervision) - nothing I quit ct and was successful, but there were tons of symptoms and without my family support probably impossible. My situation was fortunate, and maybe if I tapered there would be less symptoms. But I feel what worked was a will to keep going, patience, and attitude to want to get better in any situation ct or tapering.

Moderator Emeritus manymoretodays Posted March 8, 2020 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted March 8, 2020 (edited) Hi Vonnegutjunky, @Vonnegutjunky I did go ahead and move your post, and the link to the article here, on topic or aromatherapy and essential oils. It does look like a valid article, more scientific. When posting in Journals and Scientific studies, this is the format, for posting that Alto likes to see and why: As it is not directly related to WD or WD syndrome, perhaps this is the best place for it. If you'd like to copy and quote parts of the article here, that pertained to your experiences, that would be great too! Or feel free to talk about your own experiences with aromatherapy and essential oils. I'm just reading through it now. And am a long term, off and on user of aromatherapy, and learning a bit more about plant medicine too. I'm also drug free at this point. I mostly just diffuse essential oils. I do some topical as well, on my ears and below my nose, and then on my upper back. Mostly for relaxation effects with good results. I have been a little sensitive to the plant sage, when putting it behind my ears in Inipi(sweat lodge). I have gotten some irritation every now and then. It usually clears fairly quickly. So.....I much appreciate your share of this article. Shashal
On 8/23/2021 at 7:22 PM, Shashal said: I found some positive reviews in SA for lavender oil to treat anxious, so I tried the brand name Sermind which contains 80mg Silexan lavender oil. I felt significant anti-anxiety effects after 20 mins I took it, I thought it might be the coincidence. But I felt the same next day. I thought I found the cure for the anxious that I had already have bad effects from Tandospirone. I stop taking Tandospirone and took Sermind instead, it worked well in three days, for the fourth day, I stared to feel dry mouth, muscle pain, agitation, head pressure… Even one drop of it can trigger the symptoms in the day 7, the same symptoms of high serotonin! What the heck?! Then I did the research for the Silexan lavender oil, I found lavender oil is affects on 5-HT1A receptor too. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4360214/ So if you sensitive to any serotonergic drugs, or you have any serotonin toxicity symptoms, you may want to avoid lavender oil. Because of bad reaction to the oral lavender oil, I made them to Aromatherapy during my sleep, and it also caused my neck and back stiffnesses the next day, so I stop using it although it makes me sleep very tight and even hard to open my eyes. guile2
I plan to try some essential oils as a regular sniffing. Since a minor taste of dust of western medication invega can have an immediate effect on my neurotransmitters and smoking can effect somebodys neurotransmitters it might be likely that strong organic fully natural without chemicals nature based auromas can have a soothing effect. I already know which company is legit. Now its just to spend the money. No need to put any on just sniffing medicinal plants oil since the herbs they come from all have medicinal value in herbal teas and such to see if it effects neurotransmitters. https://friendsforpeers.angelfire.com/Index.html - my website and discord server Zyprexa (not sure what mg) But got off after a month of being put on in hospital. early 2007 Respirodol (experienced ackathesia so got off in 4 - 6 months from a 6mg dose) Later 2007 tried Seroquel but got offbecause didn't like it. guile2
I found an all organic all natural company for essential oils. Hopefully they can cause an improvement in neurotransmitters. It was odd that frankensense smelled a little like gasoline although rosemary is nice and calming somewhat to smell (I got a refund from the seller on amazon and decided to buy the frankensence directly from the company.) https://friendsforpeers.angelfire.com/Index.html - my website and discord server Zyprexa (not sure what mg) But got off after a month of being put on in hospital. early 2007 Respirodol (experienced ackathesia so got off in 4 - 6 months from a 6mg dose) Later 2007 tried Seroquel but got offbecause didn't like it. Thank you. Yes Uh I already had asked Alto to delete the thread I posted because I had found a similar topic. It's a little frustrating contributing to topics that might not be the ones I want my information on. For example a topic about plant medicine was merged into a diet topic. Plant medicine is not a diet. And there is no topic on the forum talking about plants as medicine (of course not marajwana or anything related). Although for this essential oil thread I was at fault. I saw the mistake, posted in the right thread and asked a mod to delete the thread I posted. https://friendsforpeers.angelfire.com/Index.html - my website and discord server Zyprexa (not sure what mg) But got off after a month of being put on in hospital. early 2007 Respirodol (experienced ackathesia so got off in 4 - 6 months from a 6mg dose) Later 2007 tried Seroquel but got offbecause didn't like it. I posted a post on wednesday and asked alto to delete it over pm soon after because I found the aromatherapy and essential oils thread and posted in it the same day (wednesday). I don't see any post that you merged. The posts I made on this thread are the ones I made on this thread. But I take to heart that I need to search for threads before I post, however, in the case of the plant medicine post I would have prefered my own thread on it as nobody has a similar topic (plant medicine is not diet). However, I think this moderation should be done over PM as it's robbing this thread of the point of the thread. Please send me a PM because posting on the thread conversating is ruining the thread. Now I wonder if somebody is going to see the amazing things that happened to me from the essential oil I took instead of seeing a moderation chat. However its a mixed bag some of it is my fault that i didnt search for an essential oil thread some of it is censorship that we arent being allowed to have a thread to talk about the millions of plants God made that are beneficial to health. However i highly appreciate participating in this community and the huge volunteery efforts of all the staff.
