Hi,

Was researching and came across Picamilon.

Has anyone tried it? Supposedly it has potential as an anxiolytic. GABA itself doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier, but the niacin in the compound helps it across.

'94-'08 On/off ADs. Mostly Zoloft & Wellbutrin, but also Prozac, Celexa, Effexor, etc.
6/08 quit Z & W after tapering, awful anxiety 3 mos. later, reinstated.
11/10 CTed. Severe anxiety 3 mos. later & @ 8 mos. much worse (set off by metronidazole). Anxiety, depression, anhedonia, DP, DR, dizziness, severe insomnia, high serum AM cortisol, flu-like feelings, muscle discomfort.
9/11-9/12 Waves and windows of recovery.
10/12 Awful relapse, DP/DR. Hydrocortisone?
11/12 Improved fairly quickly even though relapse was one of worst waves ever.

1/13 Best I've ever felt.

3/13 A bit of a relapse... then faster and shorter waves and windows.

4/14 Have to watch out for triggers, but feel completely normal about 80% of the time.

I looked into this but it's one of those Russian supplements, so I backed off.

A lot of weird supplement research comes out of Russia, I'm very unsure of its quality.

Hmm... There is someone that says "how to make your own", effectively, by combining niacin and GABA. But I do wonder... like with melatonin and SAMe and 5HTP, etc., it could be worse in the end to mess with what is going on in the brain. I suppose that can be an extreme view... certainly anything we do is a form of brain alteration, from walking to eating to taking fish oil or magnesium. But I guess I'm wary of substances that may upset, rather than encourage, healthy brain homeostasis.

Picamilon is an amino acid derivative related to GABA, used as an ingredient in dietary supplement products. It is said to support relaxation, restful sleep, focus, and positive mood. The supplement GABA is pretty much useless because it has a hard time crossing the Brain Barriar. Picamilon is a derivative of GABA with Vitamin B3. The combination of both molecules makes it easier to cross the Brain barriar and give you results. It is a great anti-anxiety drug and is actually used a prescription in Russia. You can buy it online here legally. I think people should give it a shot. Start out with a low dose 50mg and increase to 200 mg.

Picamilon is not an amino acid. It is a synthetic GABA-ergic drug, developed in Russia, unlicensed in the US and sold as a nutritional supplement. It is popular among recreational drug enthusiasts.

There's very little information on the Web available about picamilon other than that supplied by sellers of the supplement.

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

My Introduction Thread

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

This site gives a pretty good overview picamilon and doesn't make it sound like it's worth trying.  For one thing having only a 1 hour half life makes it pretty useless in the first place, and all the other "benefits" are hearsay and supposition.  I wouldn't waste my time or money on it.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

yeah i got 100 grams for 2 dollars, because of a glitch in the companies' website, they gave it to me for 95 percent off. The first week I really liked it but now I'm not so sure. It's cool though because I only spent 2 dollars. It worked at first but it makes me too tired in lower doses and higher doses, too stimulated. I'll just stick with magnesium powder.
