Hi Aberdeen-- I have been wondering what you've been up to lately. I'm so glad the trip went well. I remember all the trouble that you were having a year ago, it's so nice that it is all in the past. With any luck this summer will be the one you have bee praying for the past several years. That is if you ever can crawl out from under all that shite stuff. lol Since breaking under 2mg I have been up, down and sideways, but it all seems to be milder and more short lived then just a couple of drops ago.

((((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))))))

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks. The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg. Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

This is about day 20 or so post drop. I had a few days of anxious thinking and angry phases, but its pms time too. I have been giving a lot of thought as to how to execute the rest of this taper. How can we know? Ive heard people who jump off at 1mg do fine. I plan to taper below that point though. What are anyones thoughts on how to taper below 1 and to which point. I was thinking .5mg as a stopping point. Maybe it will change as i get closer.

Hi Aberdeen, at 1 and all the way down to the "." I was getting some short lived really rough WD ,still insomnia but I would get burning anxiety and just blah. I took my last"." Of paxil hopefully forever this morning and am determined to win this. I read on one of your posts that your anhedonia may be starting to break up! Congrats I hope so. Your anhedonia is so similar to mine in that I will get motivated to do something and then it fades. But with me a lot has to do with some physical problems at the moment. You are now at 1.2 ? I was there in November and mid dec.i was at 1 so you don't have far to go now! Maple leaf ditched at 1 and I don't know how she did it but she is ok from it. Probably due to the ultra slow taper. As for the length of time on my micro doses, they were generally 4 weeks and I did not do the 10%. Can't wait for the day I see you finished too

Thanks DLB< lets hope this is it for you!! Thats awesome. So if not 10% how did you drop, smaller drops or bigger? Yes that sounds like the anhedonia Im familiar with, but its lighter now< before I had no interest even, but Ive noticed that now comes and stays longer than it used to. I hope that measn eventual 100% absence of anhedonia,

Hi Aberdeen-- I read on another thread that you are starting to feel the creative urges again, That's wonderful. For me they started out small but have been growing continually over the weeks. I have been thinking about drawing again and actually considered breaking out the paints again. I haven't painted since prepaxil!!! We are so close I can taste it, a few more months and we are both off.

Brass its been a long journey hasnt it? I didnt know you painted! Whats ort of stuff do you paint? My last painting was a watercolour pet portrait in 2008 and I used to paint old houses in watercolour. I did a bunch of acrylic stuff for kids for a consignment shop until 2010 when I had to quit. Last week I actually looked up a technique I learned once and had forgotten all about...but then the interest fizzled and I forgot all about it again. But even talking about it again is pretty amazing. We're on our way!

I generally do surrealism, kind of a cross between Dali and Magritte with a little fantasy thrown in. A lot of people find it rather strange. Frequently it is the things I see when I close my eyes and don't think about anything, or I trip on little things I see and go from there. One of my better ones was inspired by a rusty bolt head in the top of a picnic table. When I sketch I usually riff and go where the pencil leads me.

A long journey is right, but the end is actually in sight, I'm aiming to make the jump this fall if all goes well, and with the year almost a third over already it isn't too far off.

  • 3 weeks later...

I dropped again on May 1st. I went away with my family and friends for a wknd and we had some drinks, and I think it caused me to have some depression this week. I find it takes a few days to hit and then it can linger for some time. I haven't had any alcohol since Christmas but really wanted to enjoy and have some fun with everyone like normal people, but alas...not ready I guess. It could also be the spring. Even though summer has always been a favorite season of mine I find the seasonal changes hard to take in wd...especially this one because my summers are much more taxing on my stress levels than the rest of the year, with the change in my family and work schedule, its a different set of demands I'm not as good at dealing with (including the kids being home all day from school and me needing to be more on the ball). But it passes when it passes, and then hopefully I'll be back to just the anhedonia and the small breaks I'm beginning to get from that. I am still not sure what to do beyond 1mg. That will be my new dose next drop! Slowly but surely.

I'm planning to ride it down below 1mg probably to the .5mg range. It has taken so long to get here I'm not going to rush it now. I hope you get to enjoy some of the spring, with the new flowers and such.

Thanks Brass....the smell of new grass alone is amazing after cold snowy winters! I feel better today a little.

Re: the drop zone...before, on PP I thought 1.5mg or 1mg was a good pt to quit but really, whats a few more drops to .5mg? SA seems so much more conservative and its made me change my view a little. Its been almost a full 4 years of tapering and struggling...why wreck it.

Wow Aberdeen, you and Tom are writing the book on tapering .

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

Almost four years for me too, Aberdeen! These tiny latest drops have felt more then the ones last year, that makes me wonder when to quit too...

I have become a bit afraid of that "quitting day", how will it feel?

Started on 25 mg Zoloft in March 2011 due to stressrelated tinnitus that gave me panicattacks. Had a terrible reaction to Zoloft from start, but was told to "hold on". After four months I was stuck. Therefore the long taper. Crazy, I know... Super sensitive to drops and have dropped by 4-6 % from the previous dose.

I had originally thought like you did Aberdeen, somewhere between 1 and 1.5. But they sure make a good case here for going further. Seeing the occupancy graphs really made up my mind. I'll have to admit that it makes me a bit nervous too, but then I look at Timinjapan , lotusflower, mapleleafgirl and a host of others who jumped at 1 and only had minimal trouble, so if we go a bit further it's only a plus. I've also been trying hard to not let the secondary fear get even a toe hold. I am expecting a bit of bewilderment the next day, as in "did I really do that?" I think it will take a little while for it to sink in. But that's all second guessing for now.

I was just talking to Monica last night about how it has been almost four year, her reaction was "are you sure it's been that long, you're joking right?". I can still recall very clearly making the decision to taper and how scared I was about the prospects of WD. Also how fed up I was with what my life had become and the nosedive the downward spiral was turning into. Remembering that is even more frightening. And now I'm getting all sentimental about the friends I have made along the way so I had better stop 'cause I'm still at work.

(((((((((((((((((((((HUGS to ALL)))))))))))))))))))))

Hey Aberdeen.

As you were asking about lower doses, I thought I would tell you where I'm at.

I decided to continue tapering below 1mg and am now at 0.6mg. I have to say things have been very rough since I dropped below 1mg (very rough, but I'm managing to cope). I'm glad I didn't just ditch at 1mg as I think I would have had to reinstate. Obviously it's not the same for everybody - some people seem to get off fine at 1mg - but this has been my experience.

Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide to do

CT at 10mg. After 3 months RI at 5mg.

Taper at 10% per month down to 1mg. Taper the last milligram a little too quickly.

After ceasing meds, hit WD.

Currently 2 months 3 weeks drug free.

Hit protracted withdrawal 3.5 months after coming off Paxil (after 17 years use). I tried to reinstate just 0.5mg of Paxil but my body would no longer accept it. Tried a number of different drugs during a hospital spell. I eventually found one that eased my symptoms a bit. Currently, 10 months (15/05/16) off Paxil in the middle of a bad wave. I'm taking 150mg Clomipramine.

Thanks for your insight Mattage, and its been ages, hello! Sorry you feel rough. How was your taper until now? Ive had waves and windows the entire time. However, I was in fairly unstable shape when I started tapering Paxil, as Id really only taken it for 4 months to try to stop the chaos from a virtual CT from Effexor prior (not overly successful).I think tapering below 1mg can only be a good move. It cant hurt, doses like this arent doing much anyway in the sense of rushing to get off the meds bc of harmful efects, even side effect wise its probably minimal..

Brass...4 years..wow..you began your taper a month before me.I started before I technically joined PP, I was a lurker for awhile. Once totally off...think there will be a few nights of "OMG I forgot to take my meds" before it sinks in. I too, try not to be nervous about it. But like you, those graphs made me realize what we're dealing with. Not to be treated lightly. Still...we're almost there.

Hi Aberdeen, to go back about a month, my dose at .19 mg was 1.5 mg for a 10 mg. pill. This monday i will be off a month and the anhedonia is still slowly lifting and sleep still totally messed up with waking after 3,4,5 hours and staying awake at 4 for the rest. How is your anhedonia and sleep?

Paxil start September 2003 due to Fluoroquinolone adverse reaction that I wish doc. knew what it was. 10mg. most of the time with a few short runs of 20mg. FAST tapered 3 times and finally hit poop out or a reaction to nsaid's in Nov.2013. Started a 10% taper Jan. 2014 and have been ok until Sept 14 and went through a short hell. Now plodding through and looking for the light with unrelenting insomnia and pain, fog, loss of interests....
12/20/14 - .8mg.

1/01/15 - .75 mg.

1/15/15 - .42 mg. better sleep now, hope it continues...

2/11-15 - .25 mg. doing really good!! 2 weeks feel 85% of old me!

3/17/15 .14 mg. Knee pain bad!

Hey DLB...ok so those figures (.19mg) are the weights you measure? that makes more sense. I thought the DOSE was .19mg and I dont know about you but I honestly am having trouble measuring 1.1mg...its just a little crumb! (I think 1.1mg weighs .015g in my scale when set to "grams"). So I was wondering what the heck .19mg is on the actual scale. I get it now.

You're anhedonia is lifting? Thats wonderful!! There's hope yet! My sleep is ok, its light sometimes though I fall asleep easily, I seem to be aware on some level of any noise or disturbance in the room and wake easily. I can get back to sleep ok. Then in waves I find I wake 2 hours earlier than normal with high adrenaline and anxious thoughts. I cant fall back asleep then (after 6am).

Im sure you'll find more improvement as you get away from this crap. Good to hear from you!

Oh damn, I've been off it for a while and forgot measurements lol. The weight was 19 mg NOT .19 for the 1.5 mg. dose. I ended up using the calibration weight to get more accurate doses. I would weigh it with the 10 g weight on the scale too. It made it more sensitive. When I got to .50 mg. dose weight I basically guessed and went from there. I definately feel a little different already but my new med methotrexate makes me feel like crap for two days after taking it. I have pains everywhere and I can't figure out if it is the withdrawal or the psoriatic arthritis or the withdrawal making the arthritis worse. I have heard during WD pain is exaggerated . You're getting so close now !! I would definately recommend going down to micro doses like I did. Even if only 2 weeks at each dose. Now I know how cancer patients feel as this stuff I'm on now is chemotherapy for breast cancer and leukemia at higher doses. I feel so nauseous and sick for 2 days and I think I would be in such better shape if I didn't have to deal with this too. You're gonna do great! Keep in touch..

Im sorry you have extra crap to deal with DLB. I have a friend with RA and she takes that med too I think. Its potent!

Your weights make more sense now. For some reason i weigh in grams...so my 1.1mg dose weighs .017g in the scale. I cant wait to be done with this. But I wont rush. The depression and DR is lifting again. I have zero energy and motivation though, and yet so much to do. So much stuff around here to do for summer, including book holidays and make plans, and book camps and register kids into summer things...its too much for my sluggish brain and body.I have endless physically demanding chores to take care of outside and yet my body feels like a limp rag. Ive been walking more again with the nicer weather and I hope this helps.

Little more energy lately. I find it changes along with my cycle. Some of this is probably normal, but I know a lot of it is wd too. We've been doing a lot of physical work outside this week and Ive managed to keep up the last day or two. We're downsizing a fish pond and adding some space to our veggie garden so lots of work there. Brass I'll be adding pumpkins and beans this year, how are your pumpkins doing? Mine are still just sprouts so far. They havent been moved outside yet as we still had frost this week! Warm days though.

Hi Aberdeen, I have been wondering how you were doing! I'm not here much but just popped in to change my signature because I dropped to 1 mg today. I have been really struggling but honestly I don't know how much is withdrawal; I've got a lot going on including low iron and super stress. I'm definitely not jumping off anytime soon. Good to see you are doing well, relatively!

Trying to get off Paxil since 2007. Was tapering by 0.1 mg every 4-5 weeks. Had awful crash in November 2015 at .5 mg; updosed gradually to 2 mg.

Doing better and tapering again, much slower this time. 2016: Dropped from 2 mg to 1.62 mg. 2017: 1.62 mg to 1.2 mg. 2018: 1.2 mg to .76 mg. 2019: .76 mg to .56 mg. 2020: .56 mg to .33 mg. 2021: .33 mg to .13 mg. 2022: .13 mg to .03 mg. 6/12/23 .002 mg. OFF PAXIL 9/4/23

Started Klonopin in November 2015 to deal with crash. 1/10/16 started milk titration taper from .5 mg. Finished taper 12/6/17. Still take Klonopin for agoraphobia 2 - 3 times a week.

Hi Aberdeen-- the garden and fishpond sound exciting, I'm so glad you're able to keep up, that is such a good sign. The pumpkins are sorta stalled at about 8 inches tall, things have been on the chilly side since we planted them. Soon as it warns up they will explode. We harvested the first first tomatoes and black berries last week, they taste great. We are going to be over run with tomatoes this year. We were only going to plant two vines, which we did back if February. Then two volunteer plants showed up and were the first to produce. Then our inner goths showed themselves and we planted four varieties of black tomatoes. (google "Indigo Rose" tomato). Luckily Monica makes killer pasta sauce that freezes well. Along the Goth theme we started a "black garden" in the side yard. All the plants have black foliage or black flowers. We just got it based in this afternoon and it is going to look amazing, once everything is in the ground and filled out. It feels so good to be so excited about the gardens this year.

Brass so happy for you! I cant say I have excitement yet but I have interest enough to force myself out there mostly. Thats a good start for me, when for years its been downright neglected. Rachelina, nice to see you, I will be at 1mg soon too. We're all so close. Glad you're holding up DLB...and hopefully that was it for the frost!

I will be dropping on June 7th-ish. Mostly my days are a combo of mild morning angst and then periods of foggy head and DR. the earlier depression of last month has eased up thank God and it seems I'm back to my normal wd status. Still prone to intermittent bursts of anger and negativity but this month they seem milder. Anhedonia is as usual, with flickers of lifting. Those flickers are like a blessed trip down a dreamy happy memory lane, smells music and feelings, all come to life for an instant. Its a strange sensation. I pray its my solid base again someday sooner than later.

One week post drop. Down to 1mg. So far nothing unusual or overly difficult. I never thought Id make it through the 1's, there were so many 10% drops in there! But here I am. I have no idea where to go next, though I suspect I will do .1mg drops for a bit still. Maybe to .5mg,

I am so torn about supplements. My anhedonia seems to fluctuate and lift during the first two weeks of my cycle, getting much worse for the latter two. Would a supplement for hormones, like Chasteberry, help me any? or could it cause harm? At this stage Im afraid to mess with much, but if it helped with anhedonia I would try it.

Bit by bit I can see the positive effects of intentional change. Usually making an effort to improve ANYTHING is met with no positive result. It simply doesnt register and only creates unnecessary effort from a place of zero motivation to begin with. But there have been times lately when a move in a new direction has an impact, and its amazing. The first one was weight loss, for so long it didnt matter what i did, it wouldnt budge... yet now I am able to navigate my weight loss, because my body responds! Also now and then i will attempt a creative project and find a spark of joy or interest and a flow into more ideas (still not common, but its happened a few times the last few months). There comes a tipping point maybe where we need to encourage ourselves to step out of the shell wd has created around us, and push, just alittle bit, to test. Its easy to tell if we're ready and if we aren't. But there seems to come a point when our inner compass lets us know it wants to at least try, and thats a big step.

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

"Every time I read of a multi-person shooting, I always presume that person had just started a SSRI or had just stopped." Dr Mosher. Me too!

Over two decades later, the number of antidepressant prescriptions a year is slightly more than the number of people in the Western world. Most (nine out of 10) prescriptions are for patients who faced difficulties on stopping, equating to about a tenth of the population. These patients are often advised to continue treatment because their difficulties indicate they need ongoing treatment, just as a person with diabetes needs insulin. Healy 2015

I believe the ssri era will soon stand as one of the most shameful in the history of medicine. Healy 2015

Thanks guys.

Yeah its a long journey isnt it? Its a slow slow process, and Im really hoping to see more rapid improvements once Im off completely, at least a big improvement in my anhedonic baseline. That's getting old!!

2 Timothy 1-7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Effexor 75mg to 262.5mg 2005-2010 for post partum depression

Started having poop out mid 2010, also switched generic brands, then crashed in Dec 2010 (anxiety/ "terror", intense DR, anhedonia, suicidal ideation, chills, insomnia, horrible intrusive thoughts, disorientation, ect)
Rapid "tapered" from 262.5mg Effexor in 3 months

Tried Celexa,Cipralex, then Paxil to deal with wd(this switching made things worse and added akathesia)

Found online support and started tapering Paxil 7 months after quitting Effexor (at this point was having small windows).

Paxil taper: dropped 10% every 4-8 weeks

Year 1 October 2011 to Nov 2012 20mg to 10mg

Year 2 March 2013 to Feb 2014 10mg to 4mg

Year 3 April 2014 to May 2015 4mg to 1.1mg

Year 4 June 2015 1.1mg , dropping by 10% until .5mg, after then dropped by 0.1mg every 5 weeks until 0.1mg.

Finished! Official last dose of 0.1mg on June 15/16

Hi Aberdeen, nice to see you at 1 !! You WILL get the lifting of anhedonia no matter how fast or slow it DOES happen. It may be in windows and wave pattern but yes it happens. It will feel so good just to know that you are not poisoning yourself daily but are now healing daily no matter how screwed up this healing process is, you are healing! I can't wait to see you and Brass hit the big 0 this year and start to look in the rear view mirror at this whole mess. By the way, any word from Maple leaf girl? I was surprised she didn't stop by on her 1 year in the beginning of the month . Anyway, hang in there that last 1 mg. was not nice to me...

4/07/15 .05 mg. this is so small now that I am estimating and just licking it off palm small as a "."

4/13/15 NOTHING !!!! Took my last little micro dose on 4/12/15.

Hi Aberdeen, congratulation on reaching 1mg! This is a big deal! You are almost there.

Just be careful, 1 mg is still pretty powerful (even if is is a very small percentage of the "therapeutic" dose.). I tried to ditch it at 1mg, but I crashed after 3 months. I reinstated, and then tapered slowly down. Finally I stopped at around 0.5-0.6mg (I don't remember exactly), and this time it was fine. For some people it makes a big difference if you stop at 1mg or 0.5mg.

July 2011 - nasty anxiety crisis (lost job, became not functional, couldn't exit the house alone)
August 2011 - started 10mg Paxil and October 2011 - 20mg (one month on 20mg)
November 2011 - starting slowly to decrease the dose at the pace my body supported. Down to 2.5 mg in January 2013 (17.5, 15, 12.5, 10, 7.5, 5, 3.7, 2.5) - at least one month at each step. Got a new job.
April 2013 - stopped completely, crashed after 2 weeks, and reinstalled 2.5mg, recovered fast.
September 2013 - started decreasing again, slower, down to 1 mg in December 2013
December 2013 - free of Paxil
March 2014 - another crash, exactly 3 months after stopping, after 2 weeks of horrors, reinstalled 1 mg - feeling better after one week.
March 2014 - July 2014: going slowly down: 1mg, 0.9mg, 0.77mg, 0.64mg
end of July 2014 - Paxil free, hopefully forever this time.

Jan 2024 update - Still Paxil free, feeling good.
