I couldn't figure out if it was the fish oil or not.  Still experiencing anxiety even off of it.  My therapist and OB want to put me back on a medication .. different one .. for pregnancy and such.  Don't know what to do.

Yeah, feel the same about the fish oil. I’m still experiencing high anxiety and it’s over a week since I stopped thanking Omega3 . I’m not sure If it was just a coincidence that my anxiety really kicked in while on Omega3 or if it is related.

Well, I’m finally stabilising, yesterday and now today, feeling far calmer. Was it withdrawals or was it the Omega3 ?   There were definitely some benefits while taking a Omega 3. Increased interest in sex was a really big plus. Increased energy overall but my anxiety was through the roof !!!   Will try again some time in the future. Not just yet though.

Hi everyone, I've commented on fish oil previously and how it's helped with brain zaps, brain fog, and head buzzing. I was taking it very consistently for a few months (Nordic Naturals, about 2400 total EPA + DHA) and stopped about 4 days ago as I ran out. I'm leaving on an out of country trip soon and I take the liquid so I figured I'd just buy more once I'm back from my trip. Well, last night was not fun. I kept jerking in my sleep from the zaps and the insomnia was bad. I hadn't cut my dose but am having a rough time getting below where I am now (around 7 mg) and am trying to stabilize. Needless to say, I ran to the store right when they opened and bought more in pill form so I can have them now and on my trip.

Hi @Altostrata, I have just placed an order for Norwegian Gold Fish Oil.  Are you familiar with this brand?  It was recommended in a very early post on this thread.  I need a brand that is burp-free, easy on the digestion.  Are there other types you could recommend.?  I have been taking flax seed oil for years because of sensitivity to fish oil, but not sure if it is effective.   Huge thanks for helping.

G.

@Altostrata My Omega-3 supplements have mixed tocopherols. Do you think it would be a good idea or necessary to supplement that with Vitamin E? Or is the amount I’d get in the Omega-3 supplement sufficient?

Read the label. If your omega-3 supplements contain 400iu mixed tocopherols, you do not have to take additional vitamin E.

It doesn’t say how much Vitamin E is in it, only the ratio of EPA/DHA.

Hi

I'm new to this site and would like to thank the community for sharing your helpful stories and tips.

I'm  from the UK and have been taking 1320mg epa + dha per day (2x660mg)  I now realise l need to double this to meet your suggested recommendation.  I also need to add in the vitamin E and am looking to start magnesium for anxiety, as per your advice.

Please will someone help me work out the best way to introduce the extra supplements.  I also wonder whether 3 x omega 3 supplements (1980mg epa + dha) per day may be enough with the additional 400IU vitamin E.

MissyE.

Does anyone know of a fish oil that is not flavoured with lemon or citrus? I cannot have this with histamine intolerance. Just checked my old bottle and it has natural lemon flavouring :( i'm not sure if i'd react but want to be cautious.

You might try Flax seed oil.

Hi Kmart...I too cannot have citrus...and so many things have lemon juice or something else in them. I am looking into omega 3 oil as well..seems they all have something else in them and also oxidation can be a problem.  I seem to have problems with flax as well.  I know grass fed dairy and meats and eggs are good, and fish of course, and walnuts and some veggies.  Ill let you know if I find a pure Omega 3 that is good. Otherwise as Brass said the flax is great.  I have a grinder and have ground it up in the past and sprinkled it on food.  Take care!

I started taking Omega 3 (1000mg with 660mg epa + dpa) and have gradually worked up to 3 per day (3000mg with 1980mg epa + dpa) plus 400iu vitamin E.  I'm aiming to reach 3000mg epa + dpa.  I am following SA advice.  Thank you.

Initially l didn't feel anything, but now l notice feeling calmer and more hopeful since increasing my dose and added in vitamin E.  I still have a long, long way to go, but the morning terror and frozen dread has reduced to feeling anxious combined with a lack of motivation.  I'm also managing much better at keeping up with my other non-drug healing techniques.

I have now found some 750mg epa + dpa in 1000mg omega 3 capsules, which l aim to move over to.  I'm in the UK and use simply supplements online.  Unfortunately their vitamin E isn't natural so l get that elsewhere.

Do you recommend spreading the capsules throughout the day or taking all at once?  Or is it personal tolerance?

I currently have one in the morning with my venlafaxine and vit E; one at lunch; and one at evening meal with my 2nd dose of ven.

Hope today is going ok.

Love, peace, namaste

Hi Rabe,  I'm always glad to share positive findings.  The omega 3s tick all the boxes in SA recommendations.  They are from simply supplements, you can google it. Triple strength

550mg* epa + dha in 1000mg.  I plan to buy the highest strength 750mg epa + dha in 1000mg, once these are finished.  The price is good for the quality

(Simply supplements vitamin E doesn't meet the criteria though).

*I said 660mg in previous post(s), apologies.  My poor brain... It's like it's been highjacked and turned to mush.... 🙄

I will endeavour to correct this error.

Hope this helps and you're feeling ok today.  l had really bad start but l'll update my thread about that.

Alto, (or other experienced person) do you recommend taking all at once or spread out through the day?

Is it best to post everything through my own thread or on the actual subject thread... Eg if l have a specific finding or question like here with Omega 3 on the Omega 3 thread?

Thanks, Missy x

Correction it's 550mg epa + dha not 660mg

I meant to add this to the incorrect post(s).  Please help.

is it crazy to take 6 grams fish oil a day or even 8? its the only dose that seems to make an immediate difference for me, and i dont have side effects, anything less and i feel nothing, but at about 7 to 8 grams i start feeling significantly relaxed and sleepy and like my body is "repairing" , especially in the gut region

Nobody can tell you what will work for you, Ryguy, but there IS science out there supporting high levels of omega 3s and brain repair after TBI.  Here's a link to one example:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23363551

If you want to hear a story that supports this listen to JJ Virgin talk about her son who was hit by a car and was given mega Omega 3 as part of his recovery program.

It's not without controversy, but you are not off the wall to think it might help.

Best,

Andy

Does anybody take krill oil instead of fish oil?  I have taken it for several years, but it has a lower omega 3 quantity than fish oil and is more expensive.  It does have some other ingredients that are supposed to be beneficial, and I do not get fish burps from it.  I am realizing that it will likely become cost prohibitive, even the Costco brand, to take enough to reach the 2000-3000 mg. amount of omega 3 recommended.  Costco fish oil is fairly inexpensive.  Anyone had good results with it?  And does keeping it in the freezer really prevent fish burps?  For me, that would mean remembering to take it in addition to my weekly supplements which I keep together in a weekly pill dispenser.  Can't put it in the dispenser ahead of time if it is in the freezer.

I've been taking fish oil for years and although I've had a myriad of withdrawal symptoms I have not had brain zaps. I think I maybe had one in the night once when I messed up my Effexor dosage (I've had brain shivers and 'jolts' when startled but  I think they're different)

This week I switched brands. I'm in Australia, so I've changed from Blackmores to Bioglan AND I've upped the dose quite a bit (roughly doubled from 2000mg to 4000mg). I am feeling quite headachey and feeling the effects of my last effexor drop this week..

I'd like to give it a bit longer, wondering if I should split the dose e.g. a 2000mg capsule at breakfast and a 2000mg capsule at lunch.

If at all possible, I try to find foods that contain the vitamin or mineral that I think I may need.

this may help:

https://www.globalhealingcenter.com/natural-health/vitamin-e-foods/

a quick google search turned up a lot of articles that say that using a vit E supplement may not be helpful, and possibly slightly harmful.

it says nothing about getting the vit from food however.

My mother, who had lung cancer, was enrolled in a study of taking mega doses of beta carotene to see if it would help slow the growth of the cancer. It turned out that those supplementing with beta carotene had their cancer spread, those who didn't take the supplement, did better, and they needed to end the study because it was clearly doing harm (but by then, she was one of the pts who had been harmed)

however, they've since learned that those EATING more foods with beta carotene (and indeed, more whole unprocessed plant foods) not only get less cancer to begin with, they do better if they do get cancer.

Medicine seems to love to take one thing from food and try to turn it into some kind of money maker, when in fact, we've known for a very long time that eating a wide variety of whole foods is the best medicine. it's not something you can patent or stick in a bottle and sell, but it works.

hope this helps.

TAKE FISH OIL BEFORE BED.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before. My naturopath has told me that it’s essential to take fish oil before bed. If taken during the day our bodies metabolise it, if taken at night whilst our bodies are dormant it goes to the brain.

Definitely food for thought I think.

Best wishes to all on this slow journey of recovery Kx
