Sh-t/Drugs an Issue?

What a surprise, the Navy Yard Gunman was in the mental health system and most likely on meds. So far, there is only one line about this but I wanted to post the link so you know I wasn't speculating:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/ap-sources-navy-yard-gunman-was-treated-by-us-for-serious-mental-illness-hearing-voices/2013/09/17/999e2c86-1f8e-11e3-9ad0-96244100e647_story.html

I knew when I read about him developing PTSD after 9/11 and having previous anger episodes and situations with fiing guns that he had to have a mental health health history. Of course, it is too soon to make assumptions as to what is an issue but here we go again.

And of course, all the involuntary commitment nuts will be out in full force wanting to lock up everyone who has a mental health diagnosis and throw away the key.

I am too tired to revise my post so I will just post the update here.  Sorry, I should have searched more before writing the first post:

http://www.myfoxdc.com/story/23450924/navy-yard-gunman-was-treated-by-us-for-serious-mental-illness-hearing-voices#axzz2f9UdReXf

U.S. law enforcement officials are telling The Associated Press that the Navy contractor identified as the gunman in the mass shootings at the Washington Navy Yard had been suffering a host of serious mental issues, including paranoia and a sleep disorder. He also had been hearing voices in his head, the officials said.

Wonder what type of sleeping disorder?

On NPR this afternoon I heard some "expert" declaring that psych drugs could not have been the source of this man's behavior, because the drugs absolutely do NOT have that kind of effect.

Even better: this article http://news.yahoo.com/aaron-alexis-dark-side-meditation-191611454.html claims that the fault lies in the fact that he engaged in meditation, which can be very dangerous for Mentally Ill people to practice.

I think I need to go scream now.

2009-2011: tapered off Trazodone, Namenda, Lamictal, Dextroamphetamine, Zyprexa; cold-turkeyed Pristiq; reduced Lexapro dose 50%.
On clonazepam since 2004, 0.5 - 1.0 mg daily PRN. Three failed (too rapid) partial tapers, 2010 - 2011.
Dec. 2011 - March 2013: Tapered off 0.5 mg clonazepam (Klonopin)

August 2013: Switched to liquid escitalopram (Lexapro) and began tapering from 10 mg.

January 2014: 4.5 mg escitalopram

March 2014: One year off benzos

May 2014: 3.0 mg escitalopram

June 2014: severe depression, updosed to 4.0 mg

Sept 1, 2014: 2.7 mg

Dec 7, 2014: Can't get below 2.5 mg without unbearable symptoms. Doing an extended hold (I hope)

March 2015: TWO YEARS POST-BENZO

I have been watching this go on for years and I think it is apparent nothing is going to be done.  Things will remain exactly as they are and more shooting will come in the future.

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

It looks like I may have been premature in blaming meds so I apologize for that.

Sadly, I agree there will be other shootings in the future.

Regarding the meditation points, I will scream also.

He was taking trazodone. As we know, trazodone taken at night can have adverse effects the next day, when its evil metabolite MCPP takes over. Among those adverse effects can be hallucinations. Trazodone also has loads of serious adverse reactions in combination with other drugs.

About trazodone and MCPP:

World J Biol Psychiatry. 2009;10(4 Pt 2):682-5. doi: 10.1080/15622970902836022.http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19384678Trazodone generates m-CPP: in 2008 risks from m-CPP might outweigh benefits of trazodone.Kast RE.

SourceDepartment of Psychiatry, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT 05401, USA. rekast at email.com

AbstractSince deleterious effects of m-CPP, the primary catabolic metabolite of trazodone, were last reviewed 2 years ago, research data continue to accrue showing that clinically significant levels of m-CPP (a) are generated in patients using trazodone for sleep and ( B) are present 24 h a day and © have potentially serious ill effects. This commentary argues that the documented potential for harm and multiple risks of m-CPP outweigh potential benefits of trazodone, given the development and marketing of many safer alternatives since trazodone’s introduction in the 1980s.

Trazodone is metabolized by cyp 3A4 to MCPP. MCPP is metabolized by cyp 2D6. MCPP is used as an anxiolytic in experiments.

Despite this, MCPP is ingested as a recreational drug to induce hallucinations http://www.who.int/medicines/areas/quality_safety/5.3cmCPPpre-review.pdf? (pdf): “1-(3-chlorophenyl)piperazine (mCPP) is a piperazine derivative with stimulant (includingeuphoric) and hallucinogenic properties. mCPP has never been licensed as a medicine but is a known metabolite of some anti-depressants (trazodone, nefazodone, enziprazole and etoperidone) and a tranquillizer (mepiprazole)….”

Wow, I had no idea Trazadone had all those side effects.

Hmm, I do recall the shooter suffering delusions before he took Trazadone.  Unfortunately, because I am having trouble finding a timeline, please forgive me if I am not currect about this.

But if I am right and he did suffer adverse affects from the drug, it sounds like that pushed him over the edge.
