SSRIs are no better than placebo… (really?) http://wp.me/p5nnb-9RW

A post from today...it was inspired from something I wrote in a thread on here...I've used it to collect info on SSRIs in general...Alto has written a couple of those articles.

I wrote the below short paragraphs in response to a question on Surviving Antidepressants (a very good withdrawal board where one can get support when tapering off of any psych med). I’ve now posted it on Facebook and I thought I’d also do a little post with a collection of articles on SSRI antidepressants. This post will find a home in the navigation menu at the top of the page since it’s another post that brings together many articles on SSRIs. I’ll update it as appropriate.

This is what I wrote about SSRIs and the same can be said for SNRIs too, really It’s been slightly edited from the original comments:

To refer to SSRIs as no better than placebo is misleading because while it’s technically true in clinical trials — they are also very different than placebos…they are NOT inert…they are very active and they make EVERYONE feel differently.

People who are very depressed like to feel differently. Different can sometimes feel better even if only for a while. Sometimes different feels much better and sometimes different feels really bad and even dangerous (think homicidal and suicidal–SSRIs are associated with both).

They are not inert and they will act in all manner of ways in different people. And, then of course, yeah, they also cause iatrogenic damageoften severe

So I think the placebo line is overused and extremely misleading….it makes it sound like SSRIs do nothing at all which is absolutely not true. They are potent psychoactive and neurotoxic drugs.

Info on SSRIs from Beyond Meds (not an exhaustive list of info):

Totally agree GiaK. When I took them, they ranged in effect from suicidal ideation to definite mood elevation.

Drug cocktail 1995 - 2010
Started taper of Adderall, Wellbutrin XL, Remeron, and Doxepin in 2006
Finished taper on June 10, 2010

Temazepam on a PRN basis approximately twice a month - 2014 to 2016

Beginning in 2017 - Consumption increased to about two times per week

April 2017 - Increased to taking it full time for insomnia

I have thought the same thing.  I see this in news stories from time to time, equating them with placebos, and I find that it is very misleading and gives the drugs a safe, naive sound, and also makes those of us that take them seem like fools if we don't already...

16 yrs ago started zoloft for fatigue & bodily pains

went off 4-ish yrs ago

suffered major symptoms of mostly waves of anxiety & panic, also some mania & depression approx. 6 mo's later

went back on effexor 150,

down to 75,

went off to have a baby, off for about 6 months no symptoms

back on 25, then 50 a month post baby with major postpartum depression & anxiety waves,

finally okay on 75 but wondering if I'll be on for the rest of my life
