HI Kitson,

I'm an old timer remeron survivor.  Not here much any more.   I'm a bit worried you are going too fast.  17 days between drops isn't that much and if you keep going at that pace it might catch up with you.

I understand the desperate need to get off but the important thing is to come off well, not quickly.   Part of the reason why I am concerned is because I struggled a lot more the lower I got down.

I would recommend that you do a bit of a hold soon and don't drop for two months or more.   Don't think of this as a delay, think of it as an investment.  Really cementing stability will allow you to keep moving forward with you taper.

I wish you all the best

Please note - I am not a medical practitioner and I do not give medical advice. I offer an opinion based on my own experiences, reading and discussion with others. On Effexor for 2 months at the start of 2005. Had extreme insomnia as an adverse reaction. Changed to mirtazapine. Have been trying to get off since mid 2008 with numerous failures including CTs and slow (but not slow enough tapers)Have slow tapered at 10 per cent or less for years. I have liquid mirtazapine made at a compounding chemist.

Was on 1.6 ml as at 19 March 2014.

Dropped to 1.5 ml 7 June 2014. Dropped to 1.4 in about September.

Dropped to 1.3 on 20 December 2014. Dropped to 1.2 in mid Jan 2015.

Dropped to 1 ml in late Feb 2015. I think my old medication had run out of puff so I tried 1ml when I got the new stuff and it seems to be going ok. Sleep has been good over the last week (as of 13/3/15).

Dropped to 1/2 ml 14/11/15 Fatigue still there as are memory and cognition problems. Sleep is patchy but liveable compared to what it has been in the past.

DRUG FREE - as at 1st May 2017

There is a very important survey on drug WD at the moment. We might finally get some acknowledgement for all the suffering these drugs caused us.

Adding your experience would be very valuable. It only takes a few minutes. They extended it because they got so many replies after Alto mobilised our members here but the more people join, the more powerful we are.

Hello Dalsaan and ChessieCat. I truly appreciate both of your experiences. I agree this last cut I did was kind of soon. I am trying to find my brain's balance between tapering too fast vs tapering too slow. At the same time, I don't want to experience severe WD symptoms. I've spent a lot of time reading other member's pain from too-fast tapers and/or CT and what they are going through is terrible.

After reading your feedback and considering it, I have decided to hold for two months.  I'm only doing 5% cuts but I am realizing the holds are just as important, if not more. I don't want a bunch of dosage cuts to catch up with me all at once. And I planned on holding longer at lower doses, I guess I just didn't mention it. I've read the thread about holding longer at lower doses and dose-occupancy curves. I was thinking around 15mg on down I would hold for longer. That sounded like a good lower number to start holding longer at, but that was just an arbitrary number I picked. A lower number for my brain may well be higher than that. I will always listen to my body/brain and adjust accordingly when necessary.

Thank you guys for all that you do here. It is much appreciated.

Kitson. It sounds like you are getting "the hang of HOLDING" and are also practicing it, in which case it should go well for you from hereon in if you can stick to the " slow, stable and steady" approach. Well done.

Many SSRI's and SSNRI's over 20 years. Zoloft for 7 years followed by Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Celexa, Pristiq, Valdoxan, Mianserin and more - on and off. No tapering. Cold turkey off Valdoxan - end of May 2014

It would seem from the experiences of many members here that there is no such thing as" tapering too slow".  I realise that we want to get off the drug ASAP so we want to find the quickest way but it is much better to hold for longer/reduce by less than to go too quickly and risk it all catching up with us.  When I first joined SA I wanted to be off my Pristiq by the time I turned 60 this November but that is not going to happen.

Changing your thinking to how much you have reduced by in total, rather than what you still need to get off, can help.

So last Tuesday/Wednesday I felt really off and got to experience neuro-anger. Not good at work, but I held it together and made it through those days. Thursday and Friday I felt okay until Friday night I had a rapid heart rate that would not slow down and I could not sleep. I counted my pulse and it was 120 bpm. I ended up taking three temazepam before I could get to sleep and I am only supposed to take one. But we were out of town visiting family and staying at a hotel and I had to be functioning for our visit.

Last night I did sleep with only one temazepam and I had the rapid heartbeat. I did some googling and tried the vasalva maneuver and I'm not sure but I think it helped bring my heart rate down and I slept decently. I am most definitely going to hold for awhile. I have learned a very valuable lesson.

We did have a nice visit and it was great to get out of town. Spent some time at a beautiful lake. Good trip.

Does anyone have personal experience with lithium orotate? My pdoc suggested I do some research on it as a possible sleep aid. She went to a seminar or something where they talked about it and now she's taking it herself because studies suggest it may help ward off Alzheimer's disease and she has a family hx of it. I already read the one thread about it on here and my google research shows mixed results. I am hoping to get some personal experience if anyone on here has taken it.

Not that I'm going to start taking it. I'm still in the middle of my taper and I don't want to mess with it by taking something else. But maybe in the future, post-taper.

I have never taken lithium.

Experience with my computer has taught me one thing and its this ....never be an early uptaker of technology.....this absolutely applies even more so imo to drugs from the doctor.

If your doctor wants to be swayed by pharma funded seminars and dubious study claims then sobeit but why not take a non drug approach.

Its noted that there are no systematic reviews supporting the efficacy of lithium orotate and it is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of any medical condition.

So I have to see my nurse practitioner every six months. She's the one who prescribes me my meds.

Today was my six month appointment.

It was kind of a bizarre visit this time but it went well, mostly. When I saw her last time back in March, I had just begun my taper and I told her so. And she was supportive. Today, I told her I was down to 18mgs.  She asked me what my goal was in tapering the med. I really didn't understand the question. Umm, to get off of the meds?  And she asked me "How do you get from 30mgs, to 18mgs? Don't you just cut the pill in half?" I told her I cut the pill with a razor and weighed it on an electronic scale. She looked at me like this . She said that must be hard to cut them like that. I said that it can be. I didn't dare mention how when my dose gets too small to cut that I'm going to turn the pills into a liquid. LOL  I felt like we were talking at each other from completely different places for a bit there. If you know what I mean.

And then, she wanted to give me a prescription for 15mgs. of Remeron I said but I'm taking 18mgs. She didn't see the problem. I told her that was too big of a drop. That when I dropped from 19 to 18mgs, I had W/D's and that I'm doing this very slowly. I asked her can I just get the 30mg pills for now and she was okay with that. There was a little more weirdness, but that's most of it.

I did not go into any details about this website and the other research I've done. She gets annoyed by my other doctors 'Dr. Google' and 'Dr. Internet'.

She's going out of state tomorrow and gave me extra refills which she normally doesn't do, which is great. Because that office sometimes is hit and miss when it comes to getting refills and I have to stay on top of them to get my meds timely.

Don't get me wrong, she is a great NP. I've been with her for a few years now. She spends upwards of an hour with me which is very rare anymore. And she does listen to me and respect my choices for the most part. Today was just an odd visit and I had to share it with you all.

Maybe she was more surprised that you were doing well.  Hopefully curiosity will get the better of her and as you continue to do okay she will want to know more details.

I hope so. I would love to share with her what psych drugs are really like and how hard it is to taper off of them. And how it takes so. much. longer. to taper off of them than she realizes.

Hello all, not too much new to report. I was having some serious hot flashes and thought it was menopause symptoms but they've subsided and I believe they were a W/D symptom. Was also feeling unwell last week and I wasn't sure what that was about, but now I believe that was also W/D.

Still holding at 18mgs. Letting my CNS settle down.

Hello Rupa,

I am doing well right now, thank you.

I am still on a tapering schedule. I am holding for two more weeks then I will cut down from 18 to 17mg. I followed the advice dalsaan and ChessieCat have given to me because I was tapering a little fast and having withdrawal symptoms and I needed to stop and hold. I am letting my central nervous system stabilize.

I hope you are feeling better these days.

Take care of yourself.

Tapering-wise, I feel good.

I live in California, just about 8 miles or so from one of those terrible fires that is all over the news right now. I have friends who had to evacuate. It's so sad. :(

I've packed bags in case the wind blows the wrong way and the fire turns. Water tanker airplanes have been flying overhead all day.

I can see and smell the smoke from here. I've been glued to facebook to see where the fire is going. I probably won't sleep well tonight.

Good to hear that you are okay taper-wise.  I'm in Canada and haven't heard about the fires in California yet.  We've dealt with some of the worst wildfires imaginable not too long ago in Calgary and the devastation was horrendous.  British Columbia just experienced the worst wildfire ever recorded in their history.  Hopefully they will be able to get things under control in California before too much damage is done and that people are able to stay safe.

So the fires are out, thank god. We are safe. We've had people lost their homes to the fire. But we have an amazing community, so much love and support happening.

Last night I started tapering again, I'm down to 17 mgs.

Anybody get tachycardia?  My sleep has been rubbish the last three nights even with temazepam for sleep. I finally figured out it was tachycardia again. I did the valsalva maneuver a few times at 5:30 this morning and I was able to get a couple of hours of sleep right after that.  I am 99% sure it is menopause causing it.

Hi Kitson,

Yes i still get palpitations every now again particularly in the first few days after a taper, then it can happen spontaneously out of nowhere. I sometimes get a little anxious over it but then remind myself this is just part and parcel of withdrawal. Good to know your safe and continuing your taper.

Hello all,

I'm now down to 17 mg as of Oct 21st.

I've been working hard at work and a few weeks ago I finally hit a wall. Huge fires nearby and my town was filled with thick smoke. I have asthma and the smoke made me sick, I was training a new person at work, and doing the work of two people all summer. Ended up having to take a few days off of work to recover. I'm feeling better now but I didn't realize how run down I was - I was really concerned there for a minute. Right around that time I made a cut to 17 mg. I got heart palpitations one night and doing the valsalva maneuver several times did not work like it did before and I only got about 3 hours of sleep that night. I did some research on here and read on someone's post somewhere that caffeine exacerbates heart palpitations. I also googled and found a journal article that there is an association between mirtazapine and elongated QT intervals in the heart which can cause heart palpitations. I've since cut out all caffeine and I've cut way back on sugar. I can really feel the difference in my body in a good way. I do miss my morning cup of coffee but found that decaffeinated chai tea sweetened with stevia is a very nice substitute. I already take my activating meds and supplements in the morning. I've noticed a little improvement in the insomnia as well. I slipped last night and had a brownie right before bed (couldn't help myself LOL) Didn't affect my sleep last night but I did notice I wasn't falling asleep watching TV like I have been doing lately so I'm not going to do that anymore, no more snacking on brownies before bed.

I'm not going to taper again until Nov. 26 - that's past Thanksgiving, I don't want to chance any W/D symptoms during or on Thanksgiving also I'm going to wait until after the first of the new year before I taper again to get past all the holidays. I am anticipating being down to 15 mg in January - down to half the dose I started out on! :)

Hi there!  I have been on Remeron for 6.5 years and want to come off of it as it's not good for my cholesterol or my liver. I have been on it and tapered off succesfully with no problem.  But those times I was only on it for 1-2 years, No I am scared of what I am in for after being on it for this long.  Would you mind helping me through this when I'm ready?  I would greatly appreciate it!
