Hi there!  I have been on Remeron for 6.5 years and want to come off of it as it's not good for my cholesterol or my liver. I have been on it and tapered off succesfully with no problem.  But those times I was only on it for 1-2 years, No I am scared of what I am in for after being on it for this long.  Would you mind helping me through this when I'm ready?  I would greatly appreciate it!

Nice to meet you too!  I was speaking to you.  I really want to get off of Mirtazipine.  Do you make your own liquid or how do you do your dose reductions?  Thank you!

I've been cutting and weighing my 30 mg tablets. I have an appointment with my health care provider next month and will ask her for 15 mg tablets since by then I should be down to 13mgs.  At some point I'm going to make a liquid and take it that way because my scale won't be precise enough at lower doses.

I didn't buy the scale that's recommended here because that was during my first attempt at tapering and I was pretty sick and didn't know what I was doing and ordered the wrong one.

What kind of scale should I buy?

The "Symptoms and Self Care" and "Tapering" sections have a ton of useful information. Alto wrote a really good post in this section about the 3KIS, read that too.

And what's been helping me the most is going slow and steady, exactly what many here have been teaching.

Cutting out caffeine had also had an impact on lessening W/D symptoms for me.  YMMV.

Sorry I didn't realize I posted a partial link. I was on my cellphone when I posted it. Upon further review I couldn't find a 'buy' button on that page. They have them for sale on Amazon.

Tapering down to 13 mgs tonight.

I have not had any W/D's this month except once. I was out of town a couple of weeks ago so I wasn't living my usual normal routine. Late dinners and went to bed later. Had heart palpitations all night. Had to take an extra temazepam to get to sleep. Hate doing that as I only get 30 a month.

And doesn't it feel great?!?!?  I'm down to 11mg and will be dropping to 10mg next Saturday.  Yesterday I thought I'd reduce a week early and only took 10mg and then a very short while later I went and took the extra 1mg.  I decided it wasn't worth it.

So I made my next batch of 11 mg doses for the month a couple days ago. Meant to start them tomorrow because I had two 12 mg doses left to take. Took my dose last night and realized this morning I had taken my first 11 mg dose by accident. So I guess I am officially down to 11 mgs.

I've had minimal W/D's again this month. Only W/D I had, was I was very out of sorts last Mon, Tue, Wed. Made some mistakes at work. Told my boss it was menopause brain fog but it was W/D's.

I'm catching up to you, ChessieCat!

Okay, I am now down to 10 mg. ONE THIRD of my original dose! :::happy dance:::

Feeling better and better the lower down my dose gets. Minimal W/Ds - low key hot flashes, heart palpitations about once a month.

Next month I'm switching to a liquid taper. It's getting harder to cut the pills smaller and I will need to be able to measure decrements more precisely when I start tapering down by less than 1 mg which will start, if all goes well, in July. Bless you, whoever made that tapering excel sheet! I already have everything I need. Jars of the right size, graduated cylinder, syringes in 5mg and 1mg size.

Congratulations, Kitson, on your slow and steady taper!    I am glad you are feeling better as you reduce your dosage.

I'm also on Remeron (Mirtazapine) and have hit a bit of a wall at 4.6 mg.  I think this is mostly due to tapering too fast from 15 mg since 1/1/2018.    I am holding now until I feel really good and then will follow the 10% plan.

All the best to you!

2010:  Escitalopram (Lexapro) 10 mg.   Mirtazapine (Remeron) 15 mg.

2011:    Tapered Mirtazapine: 5 month successful taper.  Then tapered Lexapro:  4 month successful taper

May 2011 to August 2017:   No medications, full recovery

September 6, 2017:  started Mirtazapine (Remeron) 15 mg  - due to severe sudden insomnia (I believe caused by statin use)

November 16, 2017:   started Escitalopram (Lexapro) 10 mg

January 1, 2018 to October 30. 2020 -- 34 month taper off of Mirtazapine 15 mg to 0.00 mg

June 16, 2018:  Started slow taper of 10 mg Escitalopram (Lexapro)

Current (mgai):    0.23 mg  Escitalopram

Supplements:  Fish Oil, Curcumin, bio active B vitamins, zinc, magnesium glycinate, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, saffron, citrus bergamot, ashwagandha

Yes it sounds like you went too fast. Some can get away with it,  I can't.  Learned my lesson the hard way.  As badly as I want to be off of mirtazapine I have to follow the slow tapering plan outlined here.  I've read too many stories of other's suffering on here to risk it.  Not worth it.  Took me 15 months to get to this point and it'll take me a couple more years to be off completely. I'd much rather go slowly and feel relatively good. Acceptance is the key.

Hi Kitson,

I'm really glad you're going to taper the Mirt slowly. We all want to be off as soon as possible! But as you said, it's not worth the risk, and if we go slowly there is a much better chance things will go okay. : )

2021: Began conservative, proper, CNS-respecting taper of Zoloft, led by the only expert on me -- me. Making own liquid. 5-10% plus holds.

2022: Holding on Zoloft for now. Current dose 47 mg. Hanging in, hanging on. Severe protracted PAWS, windows and waves. While I may not be doing "a lot" by outside standards, things are graaaaadually getting better

Wow,  thanks for noticing! <G>

I'm doing pretty good. Mild to minimal W/D's - some insomnia, but I've had that from the beginning, way before I started tapering. Slight bit of dizziness.

I don't come on here much lately. Every time I do,  I remember why. Freaks me out too much.

I'm pretty sure I missed taking my dose last night.  It's been ~12 hours since when I should have taken it.  Should I run home at break time and take it and then take another dose tonight at bedtime like always? Or do I just skip it and take my normal dose tonight?

Are you still taking temazepam?

I think you'll be okay from skipping that mirtazapine dose. Please let us know how you are later in the day.

When was the last time you reduced mirtazapine?

If you don't get any withdrawal symptoms today, your nervous system might be able to handle another reduction of mirtazapine tonight.

Thought I'd post an update.

I'm down to 1.51 mg Remeron. Still taking Temazepam as sleep is still an issue.

Started dieting and exercising in June and lost 20 lbs. The Remeron caused me to gain a ton of weight. Now that my dose is low enough, I'm not starving all the time/think I need to eat everything I see.

I feel so. much. better. Mentally and physically. Unbelievable how crappy A/Ds make you feel. So very glad to not have the neuro-rage any more.

I'm still not sure exactly what caused my medical crisis back in 2013 and neither do the doctors but looking back I can piece together a good portion of the puzzle and looking forward, continue to make positive changes towards healing. The Remeron did help save my life while going through the train wreck of whatever it was I went through back then but man did it bring its own set of problems. I'm looking forward to the day I take my last dose and jump off.
