She mentioned that anxiety may be a symptom of stress in the body, not just the mind. The current thought is that the root of it is inflammation. This comes from pesticides, GMO's sugar, and gluten sensitivity. She advises anyone in her practice to eliminate sugar, gluten and GMO foods. A lot of people when making these dietary changes have eliminated anxiety and depression. She also advocates exercise & meditation. Her website contains a couple of interesting papers & links.I am excited to see what she will talk about this Sunday. As a side note, she did mention that she advocates tapering only 10% at a time when trying to get off of meds. I really was impressed with her.

She listed emotional stress as one of the root causes of inflammation and that it raises cortisol levels. Although she didn't say it, from her overall presentation, I would guess her opinion to be that one thing may start the cascade, but it will take a multi-pronged approach to undo it. She said inflammation is self-perpetuating once it gets started.

I need to correct this....she said depression left untreated will resolve on its own, usually within four months, almost always by a year.

I couldn't disagree more with her theory that uncomfortable emotions cause inflammation, and then the inflammation causes uncomfortable emotions. But, since it's a tautology, it can't be disproven.

I also wouldn't assume too much without talking to her...she is quite sophisticated and some of these ideas don't translate easily if you're not talking directly to the person...

lord knows how many times people get what I say all confused...it's astonishing what people think I've written when I've said nothing of the sort.

I agree Alto. I can see how uncomfortable emotions temporarily cause inflammation just like when there are other temporary changes. But once you are over whatever upset you, things would return to normal. I don't see how this can be an endless loop which Dr. Brogan seems to be inferring it is

Of course, Gia is right, without asking her for clarification, we don't want to make the mistake of assuming things that shouldn't be assumed.
