MissSerene
Have noticed during holiday season that I am "hopping" from food to food, especially sweets, hoping something will taste really wonderful, but it doesn't. I'm just not enjoying my food as much. Looked this up today and saw that serotonin levels can affect gustatory sense. Anybody else notice taste changes, mostly "not as much?" emilie
Hi, i just wanted to know if others people have the same as me. Often the food has no taste. It depend of what food. Cooked natural food has often no taste (like potatoe with onion) Apple have taste. But even raw nuts have no taste (i remember the taste of nuts and i know i liked them). It is like when i eat starch raw or cooked (potatoe or grains) i have no taste, but if i eat something with sugar i have the taste. Have you got the same? Kristine
Hi Emilie, Yes, I can relate to this. Most savoury food tastes bland to me. Last night I made a curry which tasted metallic 😕 My family thought it was delicious! One of the only things that tastes 'normal' at the moment is ice- cream! All my senses have been effected and I guess it's not surprising considering all our senses are connected to the peripheral nervous system. I'm not sure what the answer is emilie, but I'm sure your taste will return to normal in time. minu
I’m having a similar issue. Foods that I normally like are really hard for me to eat. I have an adversion to most foods and nauseous very easily. It’s frustrating to be hungry and then completely grossed out when you go to eat! Anway, not exactly the same as you, but similar. April 2015 - Started Wellbutrin XL 150mg for smoking cessation April 2015 - Started Lexapro 10mg for depression July 2015 - Tapered off of Wellbutrin and had a mental breakdown December 2015 - Began slowly healing from mental breakdown Mid 2016 - Increased Lexapro to 20mg October 2017 - Began tapering off Lexapro. Dropped dosage in half every 2 weeks. Terrible withdrawal. November 2017 - Finished tapering December 2017 - Phase II began and I found this website

Not the same as me. I have never hungry. I eat because i know my body need food. But i could go a week without eating nothing, just drinking water and feel never hungry. i had tried once and it is horrible to discover that. After a week (7 days) of fast, i had no hungry, but i re-start to eat just because i know it is necessary :((( (i am french) 1998 prazépam, citalopram /1999 paroxetine prazepam /2000 paroxétine /2001venafaxine, alprazolam, clomipramine * 2002 (dont remember)/2003 clomipramine, alprazolam /2004 clomipramine /2005 alprazolam /2006(dont remember) * 2007citalopram, alprazolam, prazépam, venlafaxine /2008(dont remember) /2009 venlafaxine /2010 venlafaxine *All precedent withdrawal were very fast. emilie
I have found one study https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/267f/0b8519c8251305a95c67e85a5151802eaf65.pdf "Human taste thresholds are modulated by serotonin and noradrenaline." "enhancing 5-HT significantly reduced the sucrose taste threshold by 27% " and this article https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/science-news/3349658/Taste-may-reveal-how-to-treat-depression.html " For example, their sweet taste became twice as sensitive - a cup of tea with one spoon of sugar will taste as sweet, after taking the drug, as one with two spoons before taking the drug." now i know that the taste on which i grew up was illusory. And that the taste of food is goes forever. A pizza will never again have the taste of pizza. And a cookie the same. My treshold of perception have changed. emilie
The difficult is that the reality of the taste doesn't correspond to the memory of the taste. The memory of the taste create the "craving of" certain food. But the reality is frustating. (it is just the last 1 ml that i remove rapidly because i think i was attached mentally and i need to break. and 1ml of 50ml of 15/2mg is just 1ml correspond to 0.15mg. ). -juillet 2017 stop all. nov 2017 tetany and gastritis. I found "euphytose", "spasmine", "phyto-stress" from Govital(the more efficient if crisis because more concentrated) efficient. If very bad i take valerian extract 1000mg (stop crisis). january 2022: I survive. Still having no hunger sensation.
Administrator Altostrata Posted November 8, 2018 Administrator Share Posted November 8, 2018 My sense of taste varied throughout withdrawal syndrome and recovery. This is probably not due to serotonin or norepinephrine or any one neurohormone, but some autonomic phenomenon, like most psychiatric drug-caused symptoms. This is not medical advice. JackieDecides
interesting topic; there were times this summer I thought something was wrong with my sense of smell. for example, we had a lot of smoke from wildfires for about six weeks and afterwards I kept smelling it like it was stuck in my nostril hairs or something. no idea if that was WD related or not. Currently taking Ramapril (blood pressure) 5 mg twice a day Omeprazole 10 mg AM and 20 mg PM (the taper has gone nowhere after the first cut) Famotidine once a day (and I still needs tums sometimes) magnesium 200 mg at night as of yesterday 2 fish oil capsules "EPA-DHA 1000" off Lexapro as of 5/2018 - last dose had been 5 mg every other day for a couple years highest dose had been 20 mg at which point I was diagnosed with Bipolar II, which went away when I cut the lexapro down to 15 mg. I spent years on Paxil before Lexapro (can't remember dose), briefly on Effexor and Abilify and others I have forgotten. in fact, when I was diagnoses with BPII I was put on all kinds of things which made me feel so bad I stopped them cold turkey within maybe 3 or 4 weeks, thank goodness. since then I've known these pills were terrible and I weaned down the Lexapro with zero help or support over I'm not sure how many years. emilie
I don't know if it is linked to the low sweet taste perception, but it seems that i do binge eating. When i start to eat sometimes, it need to finish the package. I feel never hungry, so i always start eating without hungry. But it is like if sometimes i can't stop eating even if i had not more hungry. And when i do that, i know i am doing that. wanttosurvive
I have noticed the same issue, some kind of loss of sense of taste and smell. I am also just hopping from food to food to get some taste. 6 months treatment of prozac in 1996 (do not remember any withdrawal symptom) May 2017- July 2017 Mirtazapine 7,5 mg. Quit cold turkey (as told by the doctor) May 2017- August 2017 Tianeptine 12,5 mg 3x1. Quit cold turkey because of adverse reactions October 2017- Suicidal. Had to start Mirtazapine 17 December 2017 LAST DOSE NO DRUG AFTER 17 DECEMBER 2017. IN THE 3. YEAR OF WD I WAS THINKING I HAD RECOVERED 75%. BUT IN THE 4. YEAR AFTER A DENTAL IMPLANT SURGERY EVERYHING HAS CHANGED. BELIEVE OR NOT, I AM EXPERIENCING A SECOND WD, WHICH IS INDUCED BY A SURGERY. DATE OF SURGERY WAS 10 DECEMBER 2021. Moderator Gridley Posted February 24 Moderator Share Posted February 24 I've lost a lot of my sense of taste, and it's clear to me that it's withdrawal related. When I'm in a window, the sense of taste returns to normal (and food tastes great), but this usually doesn't last long and my taste sensations become very dull.
