☼ Used2be: Tapered off Lexapro after 5 years on...in withdrawal hell.

I am new to this forum but not new to depression or antidepressants.

Spent 2 months tapering off Lexapro. Finished last October. Have been struggling with terrible irritability, low mood and occasional intense suicidal urges. I am at a loss as to how to muddle thru this time period and feel hopeless about it getting better. My doc never even scheduled any type of followup visit once he gave me the tapering instructions. And I had no idea of the hell I was going to fall into. I am concerned about long term use of Lexapro so I am determined to keep trying life without it. I just hope I can. :/

Hi Used2be, I'm glad that you found us but sorry you are suffering like this. Withdrawal is terrible and

doctors haven't a clue about it!  As it is only 3 months from stopping you could reinstate a little and see if that helps.

Many of us have reinstated after a too fast taper, myself included.  It is the only way to stop withdrawal symptoms.

You might only need a very small dose to alleviate the symptoms.  How much were you taking when you stopped?

Are you taking anything else?

Here is a topic on reinstating, if that's what you decide,

http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/3079-about-reinstating-and-stabilizing-to-stop-withdrawal-symptoms/

And the topic for tapering lexapro

http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/406-tips-for-tapering-off-lexapro-escitalopram/

If you don't want to try reinstating you'll find many suggestions in the symptoms and self care boards.

I'm glad I reinstated, it's been rocky at times but much better than full on withdrawal!

**I am not a medical professional, if in doubt please consult a doctor with withdrawal knowledge.

Lesson learned, slow down taper at lower doses. Taper no more than 10% of CURRENT dose if possible

Thank you so much for replying. I will read the articles you have given me. Reinstating is a new idea to me. I don't even have a doc anymore. :/

After reading the articles I feel that it is too late for me. I finished a barely 2 month taper last October. My doc never even scheduled any type of followup visit for me. I can't believe he did that after reading all of this information!

It isn't too late, it is best to reinstate immediately if symptoms

are felt but can be effective as long as 6 months off in some cases. There are no guarantees that it will

help but many people have reinstated and found relief. around the 2-3 months mark. All is not lost yet!

Can you see another emergency doctor or hospital drop in for an emergency prescription? You should

get one if you tell them that you stopped the medicaton (with your doctor) but are having withdrawal

symptoms. I hope you can because I feel sure that it could help a great deal.

I feel for you, I know how I felt in your situation  :(

Hi Used2be,

I'm also here on the site as a result of coming off Lexapro too fast, when I tried to reinstate, it had been over 2 years since I had taken an anti-depressant, and it didn't work for me. I had been taking other medications in the mean time.   But you have a good chance of it working and I think it would be worth trying.

What was the last dose of Lexapro you took before stopping?

Petu.

Dear used2be,

I felt bad about my abrupt post yesterday. I was inspired to post something to more people so didn't have enough time to be more sympathetic. Throwing that information at you when you are feeling hopeless is really harsh ;(

I jsut wanted to add that feeling hopeless is a part of withdrawal, its symptom and not a 'real thing'. Actually it's probably blown into a neuro emotion (a very useful concept you can read about here on the forum).

In reality you have much less reasons to feel hopless since you came to the right place and your chances of recovering are better than ever.

This urge to tough it out is also so very common for all of us, myself included. I also thought that if I endure whatever nastiness comes long enough, the symptoms will eventually start diminishing in severity. Contrary to that, I found out that they were increasing over the time and causing some awful symptoms that I never had before (before starting the medication 14 years ago and during all those 14 years). 3 years ago when I also didn't know about tapering I toughed it out for 3 months and ended up in the worst depression of my life.

Reinstating and then going very, very slow as well as the virtue of patience is something the secret to success in this case.

I will post for you one of my most favourite writings explaining the rational behind this written by one of the forum members Rhi.

all the best with your decision regardless of what you decide.

Why we have to go slow:

Written by Rhi:

This is something I posted somewhere else and then saved. I know it's all stuff I've said before, but it bears repeating and further discussion.

A lot of people, including healthcare practitioners; in fact, I guess, most people-- are operating from entirely the wrong paradigm, or way of thinking, about these meds. They're thinking of them like aspirin--as something that has an effect when it's in your system, and then when it gets out of your system the effect goes away.

That's not what happens with medications that alter neurotransmitter function, we are learning.

What happens when you change the chemistry of the brain is, the brain adjusts its chemistry and structure to try to return to homeostasis, or biochemical and functional balance. It tries to restabilize the chemistry.

For example: SSRI antidepressants work as "serotonin reuptake inhibitors." That is, they cause serotonin to remain in the space between neurons, rather than being taken back up into the cells to be re-used, like it would be in a normal healthy nondrugged brain.

So the brain, which wants to re-establish normal signaling and function, adapts to the higher level of serotonin between neurons (in the "synapse", the space between neurons where signals get passed along). It does this by removing serotonin receptors, so that the signal is reduced and changed to something closer to normal. It also decreases the amount of serotonin it produces overall.

To do that, genes have to be turned on and off; new proteins have to be made; whole cascades of chemical reactions have to be changed, which means turning on and off OTHER genes; cells are destroyed, new cells are made; in other words, a complex physiologic remodeling takes place. This takes place over time. The brain does not grow and change rapidly.

This is a vast oversimplification of the amount of adaptation that takes place in the brain when we change its normal chemistry, but that's the principle.

When we stop taking the drug, we have a brain that has designed itself so that it works in the presence of the drug; now it can't work properly without the drug because it's designed itself so that the drug is part of its chemistry and structure. It's like a plant that has grown on a trellis; you can't just yank out the trellis and expect the plant to be okay.

When the drug is removed, the remodeling process has to take place in reverse.

SO--it's not a matter of just getting the drug out of your system and moving on. If it were that simple, none of us would be here.

It's a matter of, as I describe it, having to grow a new brain.

I believe this growing-a-new-brain happens throughout the taper process if the taper is slow enough. (If it's too fast, then there's not a lot of time for actually rebalancing things, and basically the brain is just pedaling fast trying to keep us alive.) It also continues to happen, probably for longer than the symptoms actually last, throughout the time of recovery after we are completely off the drug, which is why recovery takes so long.

With multiple drugs and a history of drug changes and cold turkeys, all of this becomes even more complicated. And if a person is started on these kinds of drugs at an early age before the brain has ever completely established normal mature functioning--well, it can't be good. (All of which is why I recommend an extremely slow taper particularly to anyone with a multiple drug history, a history of many years on meds, a history of past cold turkeys or frequent med changes, and a history of being put on drugs at a young age.)

This isn't intended to scare people, but hopefully to give you some idea of what's happening, and to help you respect and understand the process so you can work with it; ALSO, because you are likely to encounter many, many people who still believe these drugs work kind of like aspirin, or a glass of wine, and all you need to do is stop and get it out of your system.

Now you can explain to them that no, getting it out of your system is not the issue; the issue is, you need to regrow or at least remodel your brain. This is a long, slow, very poorly understood process, and it needs to be respected

Hi used2!

We get a lot of people arriving at this forum in situations like yours, which is why people are encouraging you to reinstate at least a bit of the drug. We've just seen so many people go through this process. The thing is, yes, you can just stick it out, and you might do okay; some people do. In my experience, though, the people who do okay usually have fairly simple histories on psych drugs (not a lot of different meds or changes, and not a long period of time). People with histories like yours seem to be more likely to end up in trouble.

And those of us who've been here a while have seen so many people come through, we know how bad the suffering can get. It can get worse than it is right now, and it can last a long time.

Even if you do reinstate now to a partial dose, it's not going to get better overnight and you're not going to get back to 100% well. But often a small reinstatement does make things more tolerable, and then you can do a reasonable slow taper off that eventually.

The thing is, if you're going to reinstate, the sooner the better. I've seen so many people who've chosen not to, then found that their hell just got worse as time went along, and then five or six months out they wanted to reinstate and it was too late to work for them.

That's why we're all being kind of pushy about it--we just feel like we can save you a lot of suffering, or at least that there's a chance we can. It's also possible that you'll do okay without it.  And regardless, no matter how hopeless you feel (those feelings are withdrawal symptoms, by the way)--you will eventually get better. Very very very few people in your situation are not feeling almost back to normal after a couple of years. It's not hopeless.

But it's also not minor. It's not something that can be wished away, sadly. It's probably going to take a lot more time than you want, no matter how you go about it.

Would it be possible for you to try 2 mg for a week or two just to see if it helps? If you find some relief within the first week or two, that's a good sign.

Regardless, welcome. You'll find support here and lots of good information, no matter what you choose to do.

Started on Prozac and Xanax in 1992 for PTSD after an assault. One drug led to more, the usual story. Got sicker and sicker, but believed I needed the drugs for my "underlying disease". Long story...lost everything. Life savings, home, physical and mental health, relationships, friendships, ability to work, everything. Amitryptiline, Prozac, bupropion, buspirone, flurazepam, diazepam, alprazolam, Paxil, citalopram, lamotrigine, gabapentin...probably more I've forgotten.

Started multidrug taper in Feb 2010.  Doing a very slow microtaper, down to low doses now and feeling SO much better, getting my old personality and my brain back! Able to work full time, have a full social life, and cope with stress better than ever. Not perfect, but much better. After 23 lost years. Big Pharma has a lot to answer for. And "medicine for profit" is just not a great idea.

I feel as if it is hopeless. As much as Lexapro saved my life 6 years ago, I am afraid it will eventually cost me my life. If this is just withdrawal hell, when does it end? What will it take from me? What will be left?

I do not wish to do this anymore.

Been on many and various AD's since 92. Began Lexapro, a life saver, in 08. Began taper Aug 13 - Oct 13. Terrible time with the withdrawal.

I'm sorry. Just in such a bad place. I am amazed at how much people are able to write here. I am too depressed and too lost in a brain fog to be able to say so much. Exhausting.

I know exactly what you are going through.

Getting off these powerful drugs is one of the most challenging thIngs I`ve seen in my life.

It is a matter of life and death sometimes.

But what you MUST keep in mind is that IT IS NO PERMANENT,IT EVENTUALLY GETS BETTER.

Thanks Alex. I just want to get thru the next few weeks and then I have summer break (I am a preschool director). I am afraid of what I will do when I'm no longer insanely busy each day and yet I look forward to it.

Please put the dates ( year) and the last doses that you were on for all most resent drugs in your  WD history in your signature.

It is possible that reinstating a small amount will stop all WD symptoms and then you can do a more comfortable, slow taper from that.

You are reaching the threshold for that to work but please be ready to consider it. Please read about it here.

The school year is nearly over!!! You can make it!! You can taper off of lexapro safely as well….

Someone with more expertise than I will be along soon.

WELCOME!

My Introduction Thread

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

It doesn't matter. I've been on everything since 92. Even had ECT s in 94. I would have to really do my research to list everything but I'll try to do something.

don't worry about your posts. We really don't mind it and you did it well.

It would be helpful to know what dose of Lexapro you were taking. People take years to successfully taper off as powerful medication as our Lex is... so it's no wonder 2 months was too quick for the brain to adjust.

Although it's been almost 5 months since you discontinued reinstating a small amount of the drug might bring you a relief. I would give it a try if I were you. (I came off of 2.5 mg of Lexapro and was in an awful state after 45 days. Unlike what I expected, things were getting worse as the time went by. Reinstatement saved me.) It's hard to say whether it would work after such a long time but as I said, I'd give it a try.

Our brains are incredibly resilient so we do recover. But depending on how much we battered them, it takes more time and difficulty. But we do recover.

Hi used2be

I can appreciate your reticence to reinstate. All of us hate having to have anything to do with these drugs. But, it can be the mechanism you need to allow you to withdraw more gently. It may not work this far out but it's worth a try. The reason we suggest a very small amount is that this reduces the risk of an adverse reaction and lessens the amount you have to taper once stabilised.

Can it ask what your symptoms are now?

We are with you on this and keen to provide support

D

Please note - I am not a medical practitioner and I do not give medical advice. I offer an opinion based on my own experiences, reading and discussion with others. On Effexor for 2 months at the start of 2005. Had extreme insomnia as an adverse reaction. Changed to mirtazapine. Have been trying to get off since mid 2008 with numerous failures including CTs and slow (but not slow enough tapers)Have slow tapered at 10 per cent or less for years. I have liquid mirtazapine made at a compounding chemist.

Was on 1.6 ml as at 19 March 2014.

Dropped to 1.5 ml 7 June 2014. Dropped to 1.4 in about September.

Dropped to 1.3 on 20 December 2014. Dropped to 1.2 in mid Jan 2015.

Dropped to 1 ml in late Feb 2015. I think my old medication had run out of puff so I tried 1ml when I got the new stuff and it seems to be going ok. Sleep has been good over the last week (as of 13/3/15).

Dropped to 1/2 ml 14/11/15 Fatigue still there as are memory and cognition problems. Sleep is patchy but liveable compared to what it has been in the past.

DRUG FREE - as at 1st May 2017
