Vitamin K2

I was vit D deficient and told by my doc to take D3 and calcium after I broke my foot doing a small hop on the kitchen floor I broke one bone in 4 places.  I did not think it was broke and wait three days to have it checked as thought it was impossible to beak a bone doing nothing.

I reacted badly to the D and calcium ... blinding light in my eyes and crazy head ache followed took about 15 - 30 min to hit so I was quite sure it was a reaction and refused  to take it again.  Next it was suggested I take just the vit D3 as I had a history of kidney stones so I tried that next.  I had anxiety and could not sleep I was a point where usually I slept some at night after having a very long battle with insomnia and I truly valued my sleep.  After 3 days on 400mg of Vit D3 a minuscule dose according to some who are mega doses... still after 3 days I was back to insomnia.  I stopped taking it.  Was sent to a endo doc who put me back on the D3 after a 24 hour urine collection she said for a month then she went away for the month... I could not do more than three days and sleep so after three days I stopped and slept went back on and continued that for the entire month till she came back as I did not know what to do and there was nobody there to answer my questions.  She was pissed I did not do as she said and discounted my sleep said it could not be that and to continue taking the D3 ... not a happy patient... she did note that after taking it most of the time for a month my Vit D in my blood work was lower than it had been before I took the supplement... I also did another 24 hour urine collection at the end of the month of testing.

For what I do not know as it did not help me any but made her some cash.

I am putting this here because I am wondering if the Vit D3 could be causing sleep issues long shot maybe just an idea.

In the last few wks I found an article about Vit K2 which said people will react to vit D and calcium if they are deficient in K2 ... bit scared of supplements I started eating a bit of gouda cheese each day to see it it will help me feel any better nothing yet...

Not sure it could be all coincidence I have not talked to any other person who has insomnia from Vit D3 but I know for sure I do... and anxiety the anxiety was almost immediate after taking it within hours and increased the more I took.

I just know of what's on mercola.com, sounds like you've seen that. You might want to try bone broth as a way to get some very absorbable minerals. I make it in the crock pot so I don't have to supervise it while it simmers. Vit. D is neuro active, I think Cymbalta had trouble with it some months ago. Good luck!

1st round Prozac 1989/90, clear depression symptoms. 2nd round Prozac started 1999 when admitted to dr. I was tired. Prozac pooped out, switch to Cymbalta 3/2006. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder due to mania 6/2006--then I was taken abruptly off Cymbalta and didn't know I had SSRI withdrawal. Lots of meds for my intractable "bipolar" symptoms.

Zyprexa started about 9/06, mostly 5mg. Tapered 4/12 through12/29/12

Wellbutrin. XL 300 mg started 1/07, tapered 1/18/13 through 7/8/13

Oxazepam mostly continuously since 6/06, 30mg since 12/12, tapered 1.17.14 through 8.26.15

11/06 Lithium 600mg twice daily, 2.2.14 400mg TID DIY liquid, 2.12.14 1150mg, 3.2.14 1100mg, 3.18.14 1075mg, 4/14 updose to 1100mg, 6.1.14 900 mg capsules 7.8.14 810mg, 8.17.14 725mg, 8.24.24 700mg...10.22.14 487.5mg, 3.9.15 475mg, 4.1.15 462.5mg 4.21.15 450mg 8.11.15 375mg, 11.28.15 362.5mg, back to 375mg four days later, 3.4.16 updose to 475 (too much going on to risk trouble)

9/4/13 Toprol-XL 25mg daily for sudden hypertension, tapered 11.12.13 through 5.3.14, last 10 days or so switched to atenolol

7.4.14 Started Walsh Protocol

I have found several references to people with d deficiency that get anxiety and sleep problems when supplementing. I hade a problem with a specific brand when i started out correcting my deficiency. I think it is quiet important to correct a deficiency and you should try to get your serum level above 40 ng/ml. Vitamin d i important not only for calcium and bone but for mental health and for prevention of many diseases (cancer, ms, influenza, tbc etc).

It is my belief that anxiety and insomnia is because of to much vitamin d is converted to active form when you start supplementing. This will get better when your system gets used to vitamin d. Take vitamin d in the morning and maybe 200 iu (5 ug) for a week or two and increase every one or two weeks to 400, 800, 1600, 3200. Depending on body weight and start level you need to be on a specific dose to increase. Look at the serum level vs intake chart found here: http://www.grassrootshealth.net/index.php/documentation

As you have an reaction to vitamin d i would suggest that you have your parathyroid hormone (pth test) levels checked. Being vitamin d deficient for a long time causes parathyroid glands to overproduce the pth hormone and eventually the glands may be enlarged . Pth hormone is used by your kidneys to convert vitamin d to its active form needed for calcium uptake.

When your vitamin d gets to a normal adequate level your body are able to absorb calcium from your food and a normal diet should be enough to get both calcium and vitamin k in the right balance. Supplementing large doses of calcium without extra vitamin k I personally think is bad and the calcium will end up in your arteries and not your bone. Calcium supplements should have vitamin k. Vitamin d supplements need not if i understand the latest science on the subject correctly.

2010: Mirtazapine 30mg followed by Zopiclone 7.5 mg for sleep post surgery due to pain.
2012-> Tapering Mirtazapine and Zopiclone at different rates unsuccessfully.
2013: Hospitalized 10 days due to complete Insomnia. Forced back up to 45mg Mirtazapine, 7.5 mg Zopiclone and also Theralene 1 ml.
2013-03: Lab showed Vitamin D deficient. Found the vitamin d and insomnia connection. Supplementing vitamin d. Sleep improved by 1-2 hours
2013-04: Dropped mirtazapine to 30 due to severe side effects. Quit Theralene. Zopiclone 7.5.
2013-05 - 2013-11: Mirtazapine taper monthly 25 20 15 11 8 4 2.5 mg
2013-12 Holding M at 2.5. Need to taper Zopiclone due to daytime nausea and vomiting. Taper zopiclone 1/4 red every 5 d. Last Z 2013-12-19
2013-12-31 M:2.5. Reinstated Zopiclone 3.75 due to Insomnia
2014-01-06 M:2.5. Taper Z 1.9 ... 2014-01-14 M:2.5. Z 1 mg.
Jumped of Zopiclone 01-20. Jumped mirtazapine 02-16.

Theralene: 10mg 02-09. 8mg 03-09. 5mg 03-15. 4mg 03-24. 3mg 04-08. Jumped 04-21.
Zopiclone free for 251 days. Mirtazapine free for 224 days.

Good advice, wulfgar -- start at a low dose.

Still, some people might be hypersensitive to vitamin D3. After their nervous systems settle down a bit, they may be able to take it later.

I have not taken calcium since I had the head ache blinding light in my eyes and heart palpitations from the recommened 1000mg of calcium and 400 ? of vit D3 think the RDA

I think I had my parathyroid hormone checked when they found a lump on my thyroid.. around the same time it must have been ok as they did not say anything was wrong.  My thyroid was off and I felt a lump in my neck... had a two day test don't recall the name had some radio active stuff and some iodine the machine broke and they could not finish the test on time I recall sleeping part of the after noon in a waiting room chair as I could not stay awake.. nothing came of that either.

The endo doc was ok with me eating cheese and drinking milk as a source of calcium.. did not want me to take it after I told her the pervious reaction... with 1000mg she would not let me off on the 440mg of vit D so I just ignored her like she ignored me... Just now I am trying to get some peace with my pancreas and a few other things in my body I don't want a war with vit D and insomnia just now..

I don't think... bad day spent a lot of listening to a resident try to talk me into taking an antidepressant... finally I told her I would shoot myself in the head before I would put another antidepressant in my mouth as the result would be about the same ...maybe I need to go away and rest and think about this later yep that is the key...there too tired for this now... later.

Well, reviving this topic on Vit K2.

I'm just trying some.

I had mentioned to my chiropractor, that the ophthalmologist found "normal" beginning cataracts, when I got an exam.  And the chiro thought that could be due to calcium deposits in the soft tissue of my eyes and that K2 might help.

Other than that, my eye exam was well.  Glad I finally saw an ophthalmologist.

So, yesterday tried 1/2 capsule Vitamin K2, MK-7, or 60 mcg.  I took it with my D3 though, same time, and felt a bit more "wired" than usual.

So today, will take with my dinner, and apart from the D3. (thanks to a friend who said to take it with food and apart from D3)

And hmmm, some good stuff in the Chris Kessler link above.

Apparently, it's very hard to get this Vitamin in food these days.  I had an interesting discussion with the person who worked at the health store, where I got it.......who enlightened me a bit.  Apparently, even our soil is a bit "anxious, shocked, depleted" these days and so......the flora is suffering too, and then any vitamins gained from eating even foods grown all natural.  Interesting.

Onward and upward......to healing!

Edited by manymoretodays

Started with psycho meds circa 1988 I think 27 or 28 total.

AD's, antpsychotics, antiseizure mood stabilizers. Lithium, lamictal ,benzos, and stimulants. Some med. for narcolepsy once(Provigil,) Gabapentin........probably more.  Ask me?......I probably was on it.  Haphazard W/D's by Dr. recommend or uneducated self.

10/2014- off Lexapro--had been on highest dose 10 mg. then 5 mg. for a couple of years, went from 5 mg. to 3 mg. liquid and then CT in hospital(voluntary).  I got out of the hospital on a combination of low dose adderal salts x1/day and trileptal 150mg. x2/day.

5/28/2015-off Adderal salts 2.5mg. (I had been on that since hospital 10/2014)

12/2015---just holding, holding, holding, with trileptal/oxcarb at 75 mg. 1/2 tab at hs.  My last psycho med ever!

3/21/2016---I did some unwise updosing of trileptal/oxcarbazepine with some stressful stuff......doubled the above dose x2 during this last wave but began liquifying again and on approximately 68mg. starting today.  11/12//2016 24 mg. oxcarbazepine  12/9/2016 off oxcarbazepine/trileptal!!!! :) optimistic  2016 December 9- completely off all medications!!!!!

Omega3's,EPA +DHA= 1800 mg/day. Magnesium complex, orally, diluted in a liter of H2O(that I can shake up.....it usually dissolves more completely as the water gets down to room temperature) and/or Epsom salt baths prn.   Vit. C, D3, and E.  B12, melatonin tapered to 1mg., and bioidentical hormones sublingually.  Trace mineral drops.  L-lysine.  L-methylfolate=400 mcg plus daily spinach. Totally ready for a good long window to hit soon and getting better strings of full days and partial days along the way.  Definite improvement overall since I first arrived on the SA survivor ship.  Herb and alcohol free since 5/15/2016.  None of my posts are intended as medical advice.  Please discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical provider. manymoretodays
