Great to hear from you NewMe with this humorous account.

I still didn't do the merging :( sometimes feeling like moving through the water rather than air... thank you for reminding me.

As far as I can see from your signature you are removing a bead or 2 of Effexor  every few days? Rhi always advises occasioal longer holds during micro tapers. I find all her advice extremely helpful so would consider it in your case too.

The best of luck with your MA. And running for 5 k! I can only say wow ;) Do you manage to be physically active on a regular basis to build up stamina? I find it so hard to be physically active especially after sitting at the office for 8 hours and then feeling so wasted....

look forward to more updates from you :)

Definitely include longer holds when changing dosage every few days.

Hi there Bubble

I am pretty active and always have been. If I do not exercise, I go through exercise w/d! I wish that were a joke - but it is true and pretty common  -

I am awake at 3am - no shock there.

I had to move more quickly on the micro taper due to not having insurance and being dropped from the assist program as it had run out. I applied and was denied - they did not understand my qualifying via tax docs - long story. Reapplied and they now approved so I am holding longer.

Left side pain is keeping me up. Had it for over a yr. Nothing intestinal as far as the Dr could tell last colonoscopy (oh what fun). Its intensifying - hypnic spazzing (or jerks or whatever its called) are kicking me awake. Can't explain it - kind of like I am falling in my sleep but not quite - and a brain zap. I don't have zaps in the daytime as I did in the past while coming off paxil.

I may be dehydrated as it has been hot and I have been outside more.

Weird new experience - can't seem to cool down after working out in the way I used to. Maybe its because the butt I am dragging around during exercise is expanding. heheh.

Cheers all

You mentioned waking up confused back in your July 5th entry. In my withdrawal from Effexor I've experienced waking up with different degrees of confusion about a dozen times. Could you please explain a little more about what the experience was like for you? Thanks.

Sept 12th 1992-began taking Imipramine (50mgs) for panic attacks.

Stopped Imipramine after 4 months (cold turkey).

7 months later experienced "mysterious" bad flu-like symptoms, although, without upper respiratory problems or fever. Because of this and a day of panic attacks, was put on Prozac (20mgs?) for 2 months and then, when that didn't work-was put back on  Imipramine,  plus Xanax 1 mg (4Xdaily)-October 1993.

March 1999-switched from Imipramine (50mgs) to Celexa.

2008-switched to Pristiq for 3 months, then back to Effexor XR (after bad reaction to the Pristiq).

Sept 1st 2010-Switched from Effexor XR (75mgs) to Effexor Generic (solid form) in preparation for taper.

Nov 15th 2010-Began tapering from 75mgs Effexor Generic.

January 13th 2014-.06mgs

April 17th 2014-      .03mgs

May 11th 2014-       .02mgs

Ended taper October 31st 2014

Oct 4th 2015-11 months post taper and completely back to normal!

I am very sorry to have missed your post as I have not been on here in mos.

The experience as best to my recollection was as follows - mental fog; not knowing what day time of day or location upon rising; confused about what I was supposed to to for the day...weird thoughts and ruminations.

Fortunately I have no had more of these upon waking. I have had confusion in general and scrambled thoughts mostly when trying to fall asleep when I have just cut the dose. I mean weird ad eff thoughts. Now I identify it as a signal that it is part of the med drop (likely) and that if I just breathe through it and relax best I can, it will pass. The intensity increases with worrying about it so I try to get through it.

Update -

Good news.

So far the taper has gone fairly smoothly with few bumps that are managed through relying on the 12 step program. I probably never would have needed ADS had I gone early in life to ACOA. So now I have to do reverse therapy of sorts and its better than never addressing it.

I do suffer bouts of depression and always have. Much of that comes from my upbringing and worsened as my social skills accumulated. Had my early life been normal I would likely not have ever needed this poison.

SO as I get mentally more responsible, my understanding and calm when approaching the AD wd has improved exponentially. Not simply because I go to Al Anon and ACOA - but because I WANTED to DO THE WORK to improve myself and not fix others. I was desperate.

Many people in AA, ACOA, AL ANON self medicate as is and many have experienced depression severely and have been or were on ADs at some point. Most have been in psych units at some point. Bottom line is the 12 steps gives me a foundation upon which to build a healthier mindset that I did not have in the past. It taught me to like myself and be kind and patient along with compassionate. It takes work - I did not become screwed up overnight. Thats where patience comes in.

I used to cry a lot and have talks inside my head to my mom and dad as if I were a kid needing my parents. The breakthrough and proof of healing is that I turn to the "parent" inside myself that has and still is learning to self soothe - utilize logic and patience.

It ties in with withdrawal for many reasons.

One interesting thing I have experienced is a flooding of memories from inane experiences from my earlier life. Not unpleasant. Just like someone unlocked a drawer full of long faded memories. It is most startling. However, I find myself lost in a bit of old timers as I call it (I am 49) since the taper. I cannot seem to trust my immediate judgement at times such as calculations, directions, etc. That IS a bit frightening but I am not going to judge that just yet.

The ruminations are obnoxious moreso due to stress and having a rough time with life in general. I have a lot to work out emotionally and in my personal status. Ruminations and OCD do seem to be worse as I taper. I am not happy about it. Have to relearn to talk myself out of them as best I can because I refuse to take the meds for forever.

PTSD - awful dreams about people, places and things do haunt me now. A lot of PTSD. That has likely been buried under the veil of the drug. So for now I am accepting of it rather than flipping the eff out and escalating the bad feelings. Just going to work with it and see where the dust settles once off this poison.

I get some zaps - they kind of have become a friend rather than the fearful awful enemy I used to have. But I will be happy to lose this friend when that day arrives.

I have no expectations - but hope for the best.

The emotions and situations the ADs numbed do seem to come to the surface in some ways by way of PTSD symtoms. That can be tough. But I feel I have had enough time numbed and it is time to take it down from the shelf and deal with it. But only one day at a time. I won't allow it to overwhelm me as best I can. I am not perfect i my progress but it is progress.

You sound great!

2000 - sertraline for job anxiety low confidence (17 years old) ..which turned the next 16 years into nightmare!

On/off sertraline severe withdrawals every time. 2014 - felt better as reduced dose of sertraline no more inner restlessness. Doctor rushed off again. Hit severe withdrawal. Lost the little I had in life. Couldn't get stable again on 12.5mg. Was switched to prozac. Had severe reaction to prozac..came off in November 2015 at 6mg as felt more confused and damaged on it..Even more withdrawal ..rage, depression, dyphoria, near constant suicidal ideation, self harm impulses, doom, concrete block in head, unable to do much of anything with this feeling in head..went back on 6mg of sertraline to see if would alleviate anything. It didn't..reduced from December to June 2016 came off at 2.5mg sertraline as was hospitalised for the severe rage, suicidal impulses, and put on 50mg lofepramine which in 2nd week reduced all symptoms but gave insomnia which still have..psych stopped lofepramine cold turkey..no increased withdrawal symptoms new symptoms from lofepramine except persistant insomnia which has as side effect.

Taking Ativan for 8 months for the severe rage self harm impulses 1-3 times a week (mostly 2 times a week) at .5mg. Two months (I'm unsure exactly when the interdose started to happen) ago interdose withdrawal seemed to happen..2 days I think after the Ativan.

Nightmare that could have been avoided!

the suicidal ideation is ABSOLUTELY (for me) related to the ADs. The less of the med I am on, the suicidal ideation is far less often and intense. I have promised to get of this crap before suicidal ideation on this RX kills me. I never had the intense ideation until SSRis. The black box warning should be extended to adults.

How disgusting really isn't it..not many people out there will be attributing their suicidal ideation to the meds..too late for many sadly..blessed really that we have come to realise. X

I just read a lovely supportive post you wrote in another thread a while back and wondered how you are doing now, and here you are having updated just few days ago, its great to see that you are doing so well.

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

My Introduction Thread

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

You are so right. I agree on both points.

How many are lost to these meds - and when will the medical community stop blaming the victims as a return of symptoms they never had?

Today I went to establish a relationship with a Dr. I spoke about wanting to come off effexor and having tried many times with the usual recommended so called "taper" routinely prescribed under the care of several psychiatrists as well as a psych/neuro to no avail. I described the usual common wd symptoms to which she said it is a return of the old symptoms. I see - and the old symptoms I was on it for were not even known to her at said time of comment - my old symptoms did not include brain zaps, vomiting, the runs, etc. She could not stand to be wrong and said that the medication was obviously helping if these symptoms showed up while coming off the meds. ARE YOU EFFING SERIOUS RIGHT NOW? ANOTHER? A young doctor - new to the practice - and still the expert on thousands of people abused by these meds still touting the same blame game.

I tried to explain that many people on support forums for tapering and personal friends and an ex spouse all had these symptoms to which she said that said resources are nothing more than opinions of people. JFC. This is such a slap in the face for being proactive and trying to be responsible for one's own health. It is like living in a psycho doctor society hell bent on turning people into zombies who have to take their meds - dumb up and shut up.

Interestingly enough - the suggested tapering meds by clowns like her have almost cost me my sanity and life. And now that I have followed the slow taper as described here - having purchased the awesome scale as mentioned by alto - and going at a snails pace - I have cut the dose down little by little with very few if ANY symptoms like those in the past.

Additionally she (the expert on me,someone she knew all of three minutes) asked how long the symptoms lasted. I said after cold turkey 4-5 mos to which she said it is not possible. That it is truly out of my system at that time and must have to be return of mental illness issues.

Christmas on a cracker.

Look - life aint easy nor has this dance with this nightmare of ADs...but I am almost down in dose like never before and it has been a life saver to have found the people here who have helped me far more than any medical doctor.

So thank you to all for being here.

Hello Petunia -

So nice to read this note from you!

So I am doing well thank you for asking! Hope you are, too.

I am holding down a PRN job ! Woohoo! I love it and it has helped rebuild my self esteem a day at a time - for which I am thankful. I still have many personal issue to iron out but not with the muddied mindset from ADs. I am learning to handle things without the meds and while it is a challenge, I want to offer this to everyone here...Please do not give up hope. I was broken and hopeless and felt there was NO WAY OUT except suicide at my worst. I am not going to say every day is easy or carefree but it is a hell of a lot moreso when you do this slowly and with patience.

I never thought I would be in a place that while my life is difficult (circumstances), that I would learn to cope with very tough emotions including those that surfaced as the meds were removed. The key is to be consistent and fair to yourself and back off when needed.

Look - I possibly might still be married had I never gone on these meds - who knows - but to think I lost a marriage in part to it is tough. And yet here I am telling you all that it is possible if you hang in there.

My brain still throws curve balls at me and I get anxious. Sometimes I can tell if the meds are off based on brain zaps or distorted weird as hell thinking (scrambled egg thoughts!) - and it is those times I re assess and get real and logical with myself best I can. Instead of being frustrated with the progress or lack thereof - I try to handle it one step at a time instead of the entire lot of dissatisfaction. Somedays the dragon wins but on the whole, I am here and still functioning. I keep my expectations low and accept success as I go. I try to adhere to my own advice on a reg basis - I am not perfect and lose my way but a lot less so than before.

So all of you that are shaken, stirred or completely downtrodden at the experience, please know I am here to let you know I care and I support all of you in your journey to heal.

None of this is your fault - you are not insane. This is a tricky journey of which we are pioneers of sorts and paving the way for the medical community to get real and help others heal.

hugs

Hi there, Hopefull!

So good to know you are doing well! Stay strong!

I am doing pretty well with a few hiccups here and there - nothing debilitating. I finally got health insurance and I am paying out of pocket for therapy. Still going to ACOA which has been a life saver in terms of changing my stinkin' thinkin'. Attempting to flip that frown upside down (LOL @ myself).

I find the intrusive thoughts are most annoying right now. I had them before this poly pharma nonsense - so I have to learn to not get lost in them. I feel like I have had them anyways but muted while on SSRIs. Learning not to catastrophize symptoms in this recovery is part of the process. Songs get stuck in my head and piss me off (LMAO) and weird repetitive obsessive thinking of weird stuff is annoying - have to work on that. Good news is that it is an opportunity to challenge and develop new skills independent & unreliant to SSRIs or benzos. Something I did not - or could not - embrace when I was first put on these meds.

Even better is that I find happiness in wisdom - and have been able to offer hope and calm for those facing the fears and confusion when in the thick of suffering from poly pharma or missing doses - or CT - etc. To see the much clawed relief in someone suffering is worth all I have recovered of my self in recovery.

All of you on this forum are a great source of strength and through your shared experiences, I was able to believe in myself. So, thank you!

Look - it aint easy...but even less easy is doing nothing!

Blessings!!!!

Update:

Just checking in to say hello to all.

Still tapering. Interesting that if I am off at all in taking my meds at the same time each day, withdrawal zaps kick in within a half an hour. Much more short window than when I first started. Thoughts?

Still working through all of this. Most part I do pretty ok. I mean Christ, it has been 2 years since I started this process. I suppose it will take me a few more years. But I am not giving up.

Hope you all are ding well and staying the course best you can.

Ladies, please don't underestimate the possibility of perimenopause. The symptoms can be similar to, may intensify & in some cases mimic protracted w/d from ssri's & benzo's.

Greetings Earthlings - just a note to check in and say I am still decreasing dose.

My dog died from cancer so I have had to yank out some of my tools to handle the emotions that the medicine numbed before. I am in therapy and 12 step, still. 12 step for ACOA and individual therapy.

The transition from perimeno to meno has not helped with the anxiety as this is common in peri/meno - it rears up pretty hard at times but I am working on showing up here to reply to emails and read - sharing experiences helps and it helps me to give  hope to others as well.

I am more convinced than ever that much of why I was medicated (panic depression etc) had to do with my genetics and the poor emotional safety foundation to handle alcoholism and enabling by my parents. I find myself depressed in tapering at times. Sometimes I have felt really good (way better) a few days post drop - one night a bit manic - but it was a case of me finding something that was truly hilarious and not having been able to feel super happy in a while. I did not think I was a martian or God. I just laughed so hard I had tears (and this is a problem?!)

Just stopping in to offer hope.

Less than  optimal days - symptoms -

depression, lack of motivation (what is the point attitude) and anxiety - ruminations - weird as heck dreams - OCD raising its ugly head.

What blows me away is how blanketed my old feelings were so that the removal of layers corresponding to RX reduction seem so much more intense.  Neuro-emotion I presume.

These characteristics have always been in me to some degree and much is how I was raised up until now. Up until now meaning - I am forcing myself to deal with those things AND coming off the RX. I am mediating and navigating the cross winds of this experience best I can.

My life situation is not what I want it to be but it has to be good enough at any moment in order to live present and reduce ruminations about the future. That can trip me up.

A great read in a PDF is Staring into the Sun which has helped in the process as death and pretty much all of my anxiety, panic and terror seems to surround loss/death/grief of many things. I will say this PDF may trigger those not in a good place, so please do not read it just yet or at all if you may feel triggered. It actually has helped me get a grip at times so it works for me most days. I cannot attest how it might affect others.

Love to all of ya

Hello there!

Nice to hear from you and very sorry to hear about your dog :(

I'm impressed with how much you are working on yourself and so glad to see it's paying off. I recently had to start with a new therapist after my old one of 7 years went on a maternity leavd and I felt akward telling her that I've been in therapy for 20 years. But she says it doesn't mean I'm dependent or obsessed but find my inner balance a priority.

I don't think it's a problem to laugh as hard as you can. especially if you can find a reason :)

Keep us posted!
