I wonder if this is the beginning of the end of certain psychotropic drugs, and the beginning of lawsuits against bigpharma.

On Venlafaxine XR 75mg > 20 years, because a general MD decided to try these new "calming pills" taken from his sample closet because my pulse was a little high since I get nervous going to the doctor.

June 2010 - Cold turkey

September 2010 - Sudden onset of EXTREME anxiety, constant terror and fear that got marginally better at night.  I had no idea what or why this was; had no idea it was the quitting of Effexor.  (I was never in my life even remotely like this)

December 2010 - reinstated 75mgs Effexor XR, felt no better months later

January 2011 - Began 5% taper every month

2012 - Anxiety began improving by had many windows and waves

January 2014 - Fell back into sudden onset of same anxiety, fear as in 2010; realized I was tapering too quickly.  I was not allowing withdrawal effects to dissipate before another taper.  Began 2% taper every 6 to 8 months

2016 - Fear, anxiety began to wane

2017, 18 & 19 - Constant Fear & anxiety stopped, just occasional minor bouts that lasted 3 days or so

December 2020 - Now at ~40mgs Effexor XR, 2.5mgs Crestor (Cutting 5mg pill in half due to sudden palpitations or PVCs)

Good wondering. :)   It would be a near miracle for big pharma to accept culpability, so too would it be for psychiatry to admit the same.  IMO

I think things are changing as this isn't the first writing of its kind.

I have read so many hopeful things that turned I can't get too excited.  So many starts and stops and I fear the snake will turn and some how manipulate this to their advantage... like slimy lawyers and marketeers have done for years.

Only if they can make this work for them in some way will they embrace it.  How they may do that scares the crap out of me as I have seen how diabolical this business can be.

"I think this challenging of the validity of DSM is, in many ways, potentially much more of a paradigm-changer than are the scientific reports that detail how the medications may be causing long-term harm."

I think this line is telling.

Damage done will never be a big issue... how they get to their diagnostics could be. It is and always has been about them... it will remain this way.  I say then let them take their own drugs and be their own patients.  Sadly all the new folks entering the system will never know any of this unless we talk our heads off every place we go... which I will warn you could have many people thinking you should have stayed on your meds... I do it anyway.

born at the wrong time...I fell into this crackery...

Our current drug-based paradigm of care, which presents drugs as treatments for the symptoms of a "disease," stems from DSM III. The APA [American Psychiatric Association] and its leaders boasted that when DSM III was published in 1980, that the field had now adopted a "medical model," and thus its manual was now "scientific" in kind.

In fact, the APA had adopted a "disease model," and if you carefully read the DSM III manual, you saw that the authors acknowledged that very few of the diagnoses had been "validated." The APA's hope and expectation was that future research would validate the disorders, but that hasn't happened. Researchers haven't identified a characteristic pathology for the major mental disorders; no specific genes for the disorders have been found; and there isn't evidence that neatly separates one disorder from the next. The "disease model," as a basis for making psychiatric diagnoses, has failed.

This appears to be the line they will hold even tho many of us are still trying to recover from the damage ...that damage still is not a big part of the picture as you can see it barely registers in their mind as this article tells it at least...

There is something fundamentally wrong with that ...

and until that changes the same thing could very well repeat...

indefinately... they are missing the bigger picture of damage done

why they are doing this work... to start with

to advance their careers or to help people and cause less suffering

I was looking at this again today thinking it may be a start...

then looked at the title again...

"

Psychiatry Now Admits It's Been Wrong in Big Ways - But Can It Change?"

That is a good hint ...

The question is why would they change?

How can we encourage them to change may be another question... tho Robert does not think this will be a reason they change maybe we could make it a reason... thoughts?

When going thru the hell of Xanax w/d, I, and a few others i know of, fantasized putting the arrogant ( which IMO most are) psychiatrists on Benzos and ADs for a few weeks or a month then ripping them off all drugs c/t, put them on an island with no medical or psychological assistance and watch them writhe begging for help. Well, slowly mental health profs r Beginning to speak out more and Put their foot down on the DSM V. I like to think we can turn the tides and bring a healthier perspective to the field of mental health, boycott where we can and maybe force some positive changes in psychiatry. Maybe the latter needs to reconsider incorporating psychotherapy into their practice again.

I seriously think many of us deserve some kind of compensation for the loss of enjoyment of life, lost work, even suicide, and i'm not saying that to be greedy or vengeful.  We were mislead and now many of us are stuck in a perpetual hell, or lost their lives.

I completely agree John.  Completely.

There were some cases one for paxil withdrawal that one stands out because it was based on withdrawal not suicide or server adverse reactions that were not acknowledge as drug related. Paxil is the only drug I know of where a case was won based on people not being told how horrid withdrawal would be.  Now they say you are warned that there is a discontinuation syndrome as the warnings went on in 2004... along with warning to not give them to kids but they still do.

However there are plenty of other drugs where withdrawal is horrendous I can vouch for how hellish Effexor withdrawal is.  I was also on the drug before the warning came out... even now the discontinuation they describe is nothing like what I have lived thru the last 6-7 years not even close... that is not a warning.

I tried to get a lawyer... for years called everyone and no lawyer will take the case.  It was Hedlum that took the paxil withdrawal case to success but they are in the States and I am in Canada still I called them anyway.

It seems there is no justice where this is concerned for whatever reason... none to be found.

Effexor has never had a withdrawal case go to court to my knowledge in any country and neither has any of the other antidepressants you see people trying to quit on these sites.

The only cases getting any place are the ones where babies have birth defects or people have died due to taking the drug as in suicide.

Not fair not justice and not right... just how it has been to this point.

Another interesting fact about psych drugs and litigation.

Class action lawsuits have been all the rage... where a person who got diabetis from a drug can get a couple hundred dollars for damages... I laugh at that... it makes no attempt to compensate for lost years of work ... lost cash... while not working.. lost homes... ect...

Out of pocket I am in $250,000.00 easy without one cent of pain and suffering and without any loss of wages.  This is my savings and home... gone only.

So as you can see they could take their 500 bucks and shove it. That would not work on me... but if they do ever address this I fear that is the way it would go.

Sorry I checked my facts apparently it was 3- a max of of 10 grand

http://blog.bccpd.bc.ca/?p=579

Even so not even close to the losses.

This is how they will deal with it should there ever be a stab at justice and I doubt there will ever be a stab at it.  If you were not lucky enough to get in on the paxil withdrwal lawsuit you just plain burned... the reported payout on the paxil case was 50 grand. average... and it is very odd how you can search till your fingers bleed and you will not find anything about that case it use to be all over the net now lol... it is all 404 as the industry tidies up behind themselves... I find the same thing with many science documents the entire file will disappear or the site will become corrupted ... or disappear.

It is my opinion they are doing hard core damage control now and have been for years.  It is not good for sale you know.

I like to think we can turn the tides and bring a healthier perspective to the field of mental health, boycott where we can and maybe force some positive changes in psychiatry. Maybe the latter needs to reconsider incorporating psychotherapy into their practice again.

I think that would do it actually if it were not against the law and something I could pull of I would recommend it... the island idea.  I read yesterday that most of these drugs are given now by family doctors... that would take a much bigger island... and we would have no doctors while they were gone. :)

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

YOU can change it.  Just get off and never take their poison.

I am sure when free of the drugs many of the people here will never take another sad fact is there are people put on these drugs every day of the wk... so there are plenty of new people to replace us.

Effexor has never had a withdrawal case go to court to my knowledge in any country and neither has any of the other antidepressants you see people trying to quit on these sites.

They'll have their day.
