tysons's son: on Zyprexa

hi, Alto

I went to a local pharmacy and they helped me to compound 2.5mg pill into 2.mg. but they changed it into a capsul form. would that make a difference. now my son is taking 2.5 pill and 2capsule. what you think. the pharmacist said it is fine.

Hi,

This is Tyson. I'm not sure if I'm doing this in the right place. But I'm doing this cause I thought I don't have a file here.

I was trying to get some help from members with my son's withdrawal, but it's been lost somewhere. So, I thought maybe I should

put my intro. and then that might help.

My son started Respiradol 3mg took that for three month and dropped it. Then Abilify 5mg for six month and due to his restlesnes, stopped by his doc.

then got ordered to take zyprexa 15mg. He took zyprexa for five years but lowering with the help of doc and compounding pharmacy. he is now on 1.25mg. but

things are getting tough. no nutrition guide or supplements.

Hi, everybody. it's good to find your site again. I'm still helping my son tapering from zyprexa. he's now on 5mg. we started tapering last july, 2013. from 15mg. and 900 Lithium. His doc. tapered Lithium fast in six month or so. but zyprexa first he said to taper 20- 25% but since I got Dr. Breggin book, I told him that we going slower to 10%. we started with it but we were going fast, that is every two weeks and the side effect were bad. so, researched more and found out to stay at least four to six weeks. from that time, he is doing better on his side effect. His diet is not bad and not good either. He is 22years old, stuborn and doesn't want add any suplement or exercise, yoga. so, we are just going with what we have. the good thing is he is at home and follows his meds.(drug).

So, is there anything i could add or subtruct from what i'm doing for my son.

thanks for any advice. thanks.

Some other thing I want add is that most topics here are about AD. Is there similar boards about Antipsychotic medications.

because my son is being on most of them. he started on Respiradol stayed with it three months then stop ct. After two months, he could not handle the withdrawas and relapsed and hosp. Then got on Abilify and stayed with it six months and got restless leg and the doc. discontinued him so fast that he was committed back again. His last one now with zyprexa from july, 13 till now.

so, if any one knows a site for withdrawas help or a board like this one would help a lot.

thanks again.

tyson, I moved your posts here.

We have a topic about tapering Zyprexa http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/3743-tips-for-tapering-off-zyprexa-olanzapine/

I don't know of any support sites specifically for tapering the atypical antipsychotics. Since so many people are on them for "depression" or "anxiety," we provide tapering information for them here.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

Hi, every one on tapering or surviving antipsychotic meds. As parents we were doing 10% reduction from 15mg last year up to today. Things started to go down hill when we reduced from 4.5mg to 4mg. He started to hallucinate more and anxiety with anger. After three weeks on 4mg, we mwent back to 4.5mg where he seemed more stable. Eventhough he never been stable completely during his tapering.

I thought he would be better in few days, but he still angry, hallucinating and delusional at times.

can anyone give us what we are doing wrong. give us a guide that seems might do better than we are doing. we getting hopless.

Most articles I read on these form is about antidep. but my son is taking zyprexa and he is out of control these two days.

tyson, I moved your post here to your thread which also contains the background information for your son.  If possible, please would you put your son's drug and withdrawal history in your signature, it makes it easier to see the situation when offering suggestions.  Here is instructions for how to do it:

http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/893-please-put-your-withdrawal-history-in-your-signature/

If your son has been experiencing hallucinations and increased anger, its good that you increased his dose back up to 4.5mg, it may take a while longer before he settles down again.  I don't have any experience with tapering zyprexa, and will ask for some help, but you may need to hold at 4.5mg for some time, especially as you mentioned that he has never really been stable through the tapering.

Why was your son originally put on anti-psychotic medication?

Petu.

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

hi Tyson...

you might find this blog helpful -- written by the mother of a son who had emotional issues that got labeled schizophrenic (i'm not assuming your son has the label, but those of us with psychosis have special needs that this board doesn't have as much experience with being that they deal, as you've noted primarily with antidepressants)

His current symptoms might not be from just that last drop from 4.5 to 4. You have probably been going a bit too fast for a while and it's just catching up now. It's possible to get ahead of the brain's ability to adapt and make cuts when things seem to be okay but it's actually a bit too soon.

I concur that your best move at this point is either a small updose or stay where you are, and either way just hold for a long time. Given that he's been tapering for a year, and during that time he has also come off lithium, a nice long hold is probably in order, up to six months, just to give everything time to stabilize.

Once you begin tapering again it might be best to go to smaller reductions, 5-8% of the current dose.

Started on Prozac and Xanax in 1992 for PTSD after an assault. One drug led to more, the usual story. Got sicker and sicker, but believed I needed the drugs for my "underlying disease". Long story...lost everything. Life savings, home, physical and mental health, relationships, friendships, ability to work, everything. Amitryptiline, Prozac, bupropion, buspirone, flurazepam, diazepam, alprazolam, Paxil, citalopram, lamotrigine, gabapentin...probably more I've forgotten.

Started multidrug taper in Feb 2010.  Doing a very slow microtaper, down to low doses now and feeling SO much better, getting my old personality and my brain back! Able to work full time, have a full social life, and cope with stress better than ever. Not perfect, but much better. After 23 lost years. Big Pharma has a lot to answer for. And "medicine for profit" is just not a great idea.

A reduction from 4.5mg to 4mg is greater than 10%.

It may be your son will have greater difficulty reducing from the lower dose of 4.5mg. This is common.

If his symptoms don't subside in a few days -- it will take at least 4 days for his system to register the updose -- I might go up to 5mg, hold there for a good long time, and then reduce by even tinier amounts, perhaps 3% every month.

I have been off Zyprexa since 12/12. My diagnosis was/is bipolar. My dr. was fairly clueless, but even he thought the out-of-control negative emotions was normal. I didn't have delusions or psychosis, but I had sort of a video scrapbook of memories running through my head whenever I wasn't actively involved in something else. It wasn't bad, just sort of a total life review. I saw things that weren't't there in my peripheral vision, but they weren't frightening. The rage and insomnia got much worse towards the end. It was an eight-month taper, before I found this site. I was able to work through the whole thing, but I have an easy, 70% of full time job. I recently consulted Mensah Medical and they said Zyprexa tends to be a very hard taper. Hang in there! I recently reacted to an amino acid, l-theanine. The dr. told my husband, "You all had a bad weekend, but you have to remember (your wife) felt the worst." People who are acting out feel really, really awful inside their heads. Good luck to a good mama!

1st round Prozac 1989/90, clear depression symptoms. 2nd round Prozac started 1999 when admitted to dr. I was tired. Prozac pooped out, switch to Cymbalta 3/2006. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder due to mania 6/2006--then I was taken abruptly off Cymbalta and didn't know I had SSRI withdrawal. Lots of meds for my intractable "bipolar" symptoms.

Zyprexa started about 9/06, mostly 5mg. Tapered 4/12 through12/29/12

Wellbutrin. XL 300 mg started 1/07, tapered 1/18/13 through 7/8/13

Oxazepam mostly continuously since 6/06, 30mg since 12/12, tapered 1.17.14 through 8.26.15

11/06 Lithium 600mg twice daily, 2.2.14 400mg TID DIY liquid, 2.12.14 1150mg, 3.2.14 1100mg, 3.18.14 1075mg, 4/14 updose to 1100mg, 6.1.14 900 mg capsules 7.8.14 810mg, 8.17.14 725mg, 8.24.24 700mg...10.22.14 487.5mg, 3.9.15 475mg, 4.1.15 462.5mg 4.21.15 450mg 8.11.15 375mg, 11.28.15 362.5mg, back to 375mg four days later, 3.4.16 updose to 475 (too much going on to risk trouble)

9/4/13 Toprol-XL 25mg daily for sudden hypertension, tapered 11.12.13 through 5.3.14, last 10 days or so switched to atenolol

7.4.14 Started Walsh Protocol

Copied from Zyprexa tapering thread:

Hi, everyone. My son is on zyprexa 4.5mg. For the last two months. Then we reduced it to 4. and after few days, he didn't like the reduction. he was more psychostic than before and almost all day. He is being like that for almost two weeks. Then with some advice we went back to his original 4.5. Now he is on third day back to his old dose but still not stable. Also, after we reduce his meds, and got sick with withdrawal, we gave him 5mg valium. Then after two days, when his syptoms were worse, we gave him .5mg Atavan.

Would those benzose did more worse than we thought? Or did we reduce too much. we thought we were going 10% from the present dose. even we stayed longer time. Does any one know why he is flipping like this. ?

Thanks every one. Like Alto said , today is his fourth day on 4.5 and he slept good all night. He took a warm Epsom salt bath. maybe that helped. but he had a good sleep from the last days. Hope he will stay calm today. His anxiety and hallucination comes mostly around five evening and goes on for hours sometime. sometimes he goes off for an hour and takes a break and continues second time. Also, he is not eating as before, is that common with tapering antipsychotic meds? Anything we can do to help calm his head would be apreciated. any suggestion pls. thanks again..

I am sorry that I am not up to really writing, but you might want to research pyrrole disorder. There is a web seminar on it right now, just till 9a tomorrow, at www,theanxietysummit.com. Many people who have been diagnosed with psychosis have it, and it's diagnosed by a $70 urine test, and treated with high-dose vitamins.

Hi, everyone. I visited a psychiatry today and talked about withdrawal from zyprexa. My son is on 4.5mg back fr 4mg. it's been three weeks but things are like waves. sometimes auditory hallucination, maniadc . So, the doc. said we should give him mood stablizer, Trileptal. Would anyone know about this med and any problem or good about it. ? I hate to add any meds to zyprexa but the doc. said if the mood stablizer worked for him; we can reduce the zyprexa every two to three weeks 5%. That sounds good but I need more info before we start with another med. any input is appeciated.

things are getting tough. no nutrition guide or supplements.

Also, would zyprexa tappering mess up our appetite. My son is not eating like before when he was at 5mg. it's been six months. Now it's different, start vomiting after eating and not having that desire to eat. Is this normal with tappering or different? I thought he is adjusting to his new dose, maybe ?

I was trying to get some help from members with my son's withdrawal, but it's been lost somewhere. So, I thought maybe I should

put my intro. and then that might help.

Hi tyson,

When I stopped using Zyprexa, I started with nauseas, panic attacks, paranoid, crying and insomnia. Initially I was in a mood stabilizer too, Lamictal in my case, this helped me with most of those symptoms.  I obligated myself to eat, even when I was not hungry. The nauseas went away in like a couple of months, however, two years have passed and I have still complete lack of appetite.

The situation of your son does not have to be the same, every person is different. It is good that your son doctor is decreasing the Zyprexa dose, little by little.

Zyprexa 15 mg  for 5 months  in 2010. I quit cold turkey /Zyprexa 5 mg from sept 2011 to sept 2012. I quit cold turkey

Lamictal and Geodon for around 6 months (from around sept 2012 to feb 2013)

Trazodone/ Klonopin 0.5 mg / 1 mg /Quetiapine  and gabapentin 600 mg/ Risperidone and gabapentin 600 mg

Gabapentin 1200 mg  around feb 2014 to  june 2014/ Gabapentin 900 mg july 2014 to December 2014

Invega 6 mg dec 2014 (for 8 days) / Gabapentin 600 mg

Invega 6 mg April 2015 / Gabapentin 900 mg

Invega 3 mg May 2015 / Gabapentin 600 mg

Since May 25th Gabapentin 600 mg

July 24 Gabapentin 400 mg August 18 Gabapentin 300 mg

Currently taking Invega 6 mg and Venlafaxine 150 mg. 2018

2019. I took invega 3 mg for two months. I stop taking medication two days ago (11/13) I am doing ok.

In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: It goes on.

When did he start vomiting after eating? Does this happen frequently?

HI, Alto

I have a question if you know about blood plasma concentration. so, when you are reduced down from 5mg, it seems the dopomin is reduced to around 50%. but how about the seratonin.? looking the diagram, it seems up the threshold of about 60-70%. If I'm reading it right. So, if that is the case, is the zyprexa under 5mg acting as depressant more than antipsychotic.?

2012 put on Citalopram and diazepam for 3 months for "depression" after filling in a 3 minute form at the doctors, had a massive reaction with panic attacks and extreme anxiety, never suffered panic attacks or anxiety before citalopram.Told to quit cold turkey which led to two hospital admissions during 2012/2013

December for 6 months Seroquel dosage adjusted up and down 50mg ,150mg ,100mg, caused severe tinnitus ,told to quit cold turkey

2013 January for 12 months Lorazapam given to me like sweets, told to quit cold turkey

2013 May Zoloft for 6 months ,told to quit cold turkey, reinstated 50mg tapered 2nd time over a month (to fast but I survived)messed up my sleep

Zyprexa April 2103 5mg until august 2014 ,dropped by doctor down to 2.5mg for one month went well but sleep was very poor for 3 weeks

End of 2015 I had to reinstate back up to 5mg due to constant insomnia that wouldnt go away Started a slow taper and found an understanding doctor who listened to me while I reduced
May 2016 drug free, sleeping and doing well in life again, it can be done http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/12078-finally-off-zyprexa/

Hi Tyson mom,

I moved your post to your topic because it had an update on your son's medication status. Good news and thanks for posting it.

What happened and how I arrived here: http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/4243-cymbaltawithdrawal5600-introduction/#entry50878

July 2016 I have decided to leave my story here at SA unfinished. I have left my contact information in my profile for anyone who wishes to talk to me. I have a posting history spanning nearly 4 years and 3000+ posts all over the site.

Thank you to all who participated in my recovery. I'll miss talking to you but know that I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines, suffering and rejoicing with you in spirit, as you go on in your journey.

That is good news, tyson, thank you.

Your son may wish to stay at 3.5mg Zyprexa for a while, to let his system settle down from all the drug changes.

Please let us know how he's doing.

Hi, everyone.

Update on my son's zyprexa tapering. Today we are at 2mg. It's almost more than a year, that we were at 3.5mg. It's taking a long time for this tapering. The reasons are, we are staying more time from 6 weeks to 8 weeks. Also, we are reducing less than 10%.

But I have a question for any one who would know.

1. Is long tapering harmful to the person, I mean, would the brain have hard time to go to its nautural state?

2. I work in a big hospital and I have seen patients with zyprexa for depression, insomnia, nausea. So, is zyprexa at lower dose act as antidepressant?

3. Now since my son is at 2mg. what is best way to go down. since it's going to be on the hoho, steep fall on his plasma concentration. Any advice is very helpful as always.

Hi Tyson, good to have an update!  How has your son been doing with the taper?  Has he been able to stay fairly comfortable?

I'm sure one of the mods will respond, but I think that if the taper needed to be so slow due to withdrawal symptoms, then it ultimately won't be harmful taking so long, quite the opposite.  You are doing a gentle slide down which allows your son's nervous system to start working for itself after being dummed down by the action of the drugs.  I myself went through 10 months of withdrawal before reinstating.  I'd been on venlafaxine for 12 years and my nervous system was clearly really struggling to come online once the drug was gone. Now I am doing a micro-taper of ven in hopes that my system will gradually upregulate.  Going faster would just cause more imbalance and upheaval.  I know that it seems like a double-edged sword, being on the drugs longer, but the alternative is just not tolerable with the withdrawal symptoms being so devastating.

Congratulations on getting your son down to 2 mg!  How did you go about measuring doses? What percentage were you cutting and how often?

I can't answer the question about Zyprexa acting as an antidepressant at lower doses, though a little research found that it does work on serotonin type 2 receptors.

SG

Started ADs back around 1995 after bad break-up, starting with Prozac.  Switched to Wellbutrin, and then to Effexor in 2002
Effexor XR 2002-2014 up to 225 mg at one point, down to 37.5 mg towards end but back up to 75 mg in 2014; now realize I had W/D as I dropped down, memory very poor about history.  Extreme emotions, poor concentration as I stepped back down, didn't connect the dots!
Summer 2014 reduced to 0 very quickly, was sick of anhedonia/sexual dysfunction due to meds, depression never controlled if not worse. Didn't recognize WD since symptoms built slowly (thought I had ADD! and menopausal on top of it), starting with severe sweats, very bad cog-fog and memory issues, culminating in weight loss, severe anxiety and depression, panic, severe apathy and insomnia by eight months off.  Saw p-doc who put me on Remeron, increased from 7.5 mg/day to 37.5 mg by May 22, 2015; still doing very badly though able to sleep.

June 1. 2015 Reinstated Effexor XR 37.5 mg, Remeron dropped to 30 mg PM. Immediate relief of symptoms, like nothing had ever happened!  Joined SA and began on advice of friend who recognized it was WD all along! Began tapering in July 2015.

Been tapering both meds ever since, focusing on one more than the other or doing no more than 5% of each per month.

12 mg Effexor and 5.8 mg Remeron (mirtazapine SolTabs to make a solution with OraPlus) as of 5/4/2017

Update 3/14/18: 2.9 mg Remeron and 6 mg Effexor; 6/10/18:  2.6 mg Remeron and 4.9 mg Effexor

Tapering long and slow seems to cause less disruption to the brain / cns.   It will be less of a leap to it's "natural state"

if it's stable on the way down.

Did this article help you understand how zyprexa works?  zyprexa http://thelastpsychi...article_on.html

What do you mean by "on the hoho?"  (I'm from Oz , haven't heard that before :) )

Are you still having capsules compounded?

1987-1997 pertofran , prothiaden , Prozac 1997-2002 Zoloft 2002-2004 effexor 2004-2010 Lexapro 40mg

2010-2012Cymbalta 120mg

Sept. 2012 -decreased 90mg in 6months. Care taken over by Dr Lucire in March 2013 , decreased last 30mg at 2mg per week over 3 months. July 21 , 2013- last dose of Cymbalta

Protracted withdrawal syndrome kicked in badly Jan.2014 Unrelenting akathisia until May 2014. Voluntary hosp. admission. Cocktail of Seroquel, Ativan and mirtazapine and I was well enough to go home after 14 days. Stopped all hosp. meds in next few months.

July 2014 felt v.depressed - couldn't stop crying. Started pristiq 50mg. Felt improvement within days and continued to improve, so stayed on 50mg for 8 months.

Began taper 28 Feb. 2015. Pristiq 50mg down to 45mg. Had one month of w/d symptoms. Started CES therapy in March. No w/d symptoms down to 30mg.

October 2015 , taking 25mg Pristiq. Capsules compounded with slow-release additive.

Hi, Fresh

thanks for responding for my input on my son's dilemma. As you asked, yes we are using a local compounding pharmacy. we give them the minimum dose of zyprexa which is 2.5mg and they reduce it using according to the pharmacist, cellulose ingredient to make it smaller. it seems working for him. My comment on  " ohoh"  is the area of steep fall curve on the graph from plasma concentration. May be you should check the graph and you might see what I mean. sorry for the confusion.

SquirrelyGirl :  we are using a pharmacy that compound the medication to smaller one. we keep our son six to eight weeks interval. Also, we watch him how he feels after those weeks. Some times we kept him for more than two months. So we wait until he gets stable at least for a week without any problem. His doctor knows about his reduction and approve it.

thanks for your comments and friendly encouragement.

This is Tyson. I'm not sure if I'm doing this in the right place. But I'm doing this cause I thought I don't have a file here.

then got ordered to take zyprexa 15mg. He took zyprexa for five years but lowering with the help of doc and compounding pharmacy. he is now on 1.25mg. but

things are getting tough. no nutrition guide or supplements.

As a family of patient who is taking zyprexa, I'm wondering any family related to my situation. My son stopped to take his meds when he got on 0.65mg of zyprexa. now is been four weeks. he has no appetite to eat and stop talking to parents. he leaves the house when he woke up around ten in morning and comes back around 3pm. then he leaves and comes back at 9pm. we are scared, he might get hurted or arrested for his psychotic behavior. he refused to stay at home. he locks his room and doesn't wnt to talk to anybody.
