G'Day guys, I'm from Adelaide, South Australia!

I need help in tapering/coming off Valium and Paxil. Some coping strategies, infornation, online counselling or Skype meetings would be much appreciated. I'm more than friendly and easy-going. I have come off Paxil, but suffering awful withdrawals.

Cheers! 😃

Welcome :)

The more i learn of the australian mental health system, the more shocked i am that people promote australian health care as adequate.

Mental health in Australia is a very broken system, ruined further by greedy Governments who only care about lining their pockets, and can't see the issues unfolding in front of their own eyes.

It's seriously broken.  Always acknowledged as massively underfunded yet never actually gets addressed properly.

Even if they did commit the cash to it it needs a serious rethink of philosophy and approaches.

Some outfits are up to date and doing work I see as helpful, but I've only found those privately so far.

The mental health system here is a joke. No follow up or active contact with you once your referred. The last psychiatrist i saw was so bad i never went back. Seemed to think all my problems stemmed from cannabis usage from when i was a teen and that withdrawal doesn't last long. When it comes to pharma drug induced problems there is almost zero help available unless you want more drugs.

Hello from South East Melbourne,

With a broken mental health system it makes forums like this essential for this lonely frightening journey that so many of us are on.

If anyone is open to a Melbourne meet up I’d be interested. It could be central if  there is anyone can cope with the city.

Just a thought.

For me connecting with others seems to help but I’m fully aware that this can be the opposite for some sufferers.

Take care everyone

Let’s hope some warmer weather will bring a shift to some of our symptoms.

Kx

Putting this information here again just in case anyone has missed it:

Hi Fellow Aussies, you might be interested in this.

When researching it if another Surviving Antidepressants member, I discovered it is for all Australians (not just NSW).

You might want to consider the MindSpot Clinic.  There are 6 tailored courses.

Information Brochure About MindSpot            Website:  https://mindspot.org.au/

It's FREE for Australians.  I highly recommend it.

My Story:  Prior to the workshop I had been seeing a psychologist and also read several books and done a lot of internet research.  Even though I know most of what the workshop taught, I found that it brought together everything I knew in a simple way and encouraged me to put what I learned into practice.  I did the 8 week online workshop through them at the end of 2014 and have found it very helpful.  It has helped me to recognise when I am getting anxious and has taught me the skills I need to reduce it.

How It Helped:  Just before Christmas 2015 I had to go shopping and was sitting at the computer and was feeling sick in the stomach and starting to stress out about what I had to do.  Because of what I had learned, I recognised that the sick feeling was the adrenaline so I did controlled breathing and was able to calm myself down and stop a full on panic attack.  And managed to go out and do what I needed to do.  Whilst driving there I kept telling myself that I could do it and would be okay.

CBT cognitive behaviour therapy (added so it can be found when searching)

And I'm still enjoying listening to these songs.  I've learned most of them by heart so can sing along with them as I'm driving.

BTW there is line in the "Emu" song which I had trouble working out.  I ended up listening to it slowed down in Audacity and worked out that it says:  the emu's far too big to fly with wings as small as that.

There's a line in "My Big Jazz Band" that I've tried to do the same thing with but can't work it out.  Something like:  as they get into position there's the/a finest proposition(?).  So if someone knows what it is, please let me know.  It is really bugging me.

Hi Folks,

Does anyone know of a good Psychiatrist in Melbourne who may be at least open to supporting withdrawal. I waited 3 months to see someone,  only to discover it was an absolute waste of time and I’m now back to square 1 in looking for some talking therapy. It has to be a psychiatrist as my mental health plan for psychologist has been used up for family therapy. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Take care and hang on in there everyone.

Hi Katy,

You said you were from Melbourne? I'm from Adelaide, but there IS a service in your state called Reconnexion. It is in Malvern East, and they have knowledgable people with benzo dependency experience, as well as experience with anxiety issues and depression. They offer phone, email and personal counselling. It may help some Australian members.

Reconnexion

Ph: 1300 273 266

Thanks,

Dave (Crowman88).

Oh Thank you so much Dave, so so kind of you to reply I’ll get onto Reconnexion first thing on Monday morning. I’ll let you know how I get on. I hope your Benzo taper runs as smoothly as possible and that you get plenty of windows on the way.

Thanks again Kx

Thanks for these ChessieCat, harks back to simpler times.  Good to share with nieces & nephews.
