Hi NJJ,

The consumer info on the NPS website provides all ingredients.  I looked at all the generics and they vary markedly.  You could have a reaction to anyone of the inactive ingredients.  Also there is a tolerance range for how equivalent generics have to be.   Even small differences can impact chemically sensitive people.  Tell the pharmacist to go back to school.

I get why you feel like an addict but I'm glad you found a stash

I was wondering if it is a global problem because if they have stock somewhere why wouldn't they just direct it here.

Please note - I am not a medical practitioner and I do not give medical advice. I offer an opinion based on my own experiences, reading and discussion with others. On Effexor for 2 months at the start of 2005. Had extreme insomnia as an adverse reaction. Changed to mirtazapine. Have been trying to get off since mid 2008 with numerous failures including CTs and slow (but not slow enough tapers)Have slow tapered at 10 per cent or less for years. I have liquid mirtazapine made at a compounding chemist.

Was on 1.6 ml as at 19 March 2014.

Dropped to 1.5 ml 7 June 2014. Dropped to 1.4 in about September.

Dropped to 1.3 on 20 December 2014. Dropped to 1.2 in mid Jan 2015.

Dropped to 1 ml in late Feb 2015. I think my old medication had run out of puff so I tried 1ml when I got the new stuff and it seems to be going ok. Sleep has been good over the last week (as of 13/3/15).

Dropped to 1/2 ml 14/11/15 Fatigue still there as are memory and cognition problems. Sleep is patchy but liveable compared to what it has been in the past.

DRUG FREE - as at 1st May 2017

Thanks for the information on this site, I never knew previously that generics were different, always thought they all had exactly the same ingredients.  I am learning.   If it had ever had an effect, I would never have realised why.

Kelly Brogan was great.

Started in 2000 - On 150mg most of the time, (but up to 225mg at highest dose for 6 months in the beginning)
Reduced off easily first time - but got depressed (not too much anxiety) 6 months later
Back on effexor for another 9 months.
Reduced off again with no immediate w/d - suddenly got depressed and anxious ++ again 3 or 4 months later.
Back on effexor - this time for 3 years
Reduced off over a month - 6 weeks later terrible anxiety - back on.
Rinse and repeat 4 more times - each time the period before the anxiety comes back got shorter and shorter
Jan - July 2012 75mg down to 37.5mg;, 8/3/12 - 35mg. 8/25/12 - 32mg. 9/11- 28mg, 10/2 - 25mg, 10/29 - 22mg, 11/19 - 19.8mg; 12/11 - 17m,
1/1- 15.5mg; 1/22 -14mg, 2/7 14.9mg, 2/18 - 17.8mg - crashed big time: back to 75mg where i sat for 2 years....

Today's local newspapers:  Dreyton Sher Lawyers Set to Launch Class Action Against Manufacturers of SSRI Antidepressants Including

                                            Zoloft and Aropax

A SYDNEY law firm is preparing to launch a class action against the manufacturers of a range of antidepressants it believes do not issue sufficient warnings about several dangerous side effects, including suicidal thoughts.

Drayton Sher Lawyers has been in contact with dozens of people from across the nation — including many in NSW — who say they were not advised that consuming certain types of SSRI antidepressants would cause them to become aggressive and spark suicidal thoughts.

The class of drugs is used to treat depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders and post-traumatic stress.

They are manufactured by a range of major pharmaceutical companies including Pfizer (Zoloft) and GlaxoSmithKline (Aropax, Paxil), which both declined to comment on the claims when contacted by The Daily Telegraph.

The legal firm says it will argue the drugs were marketed to doctors on the basis of flawed research that downplays the risks of suicide and other serious side effects.

It also claims “selective research” was used to show the medications are effective in treating depression.

Lawyer Tony Nikolic said any compensation would rely on the number of people who joined the action and the nature of their individual cases.

Mr Nikolic said he had been contacted by people all over the country who had been prescribed the drugs, as well as parents concerned about their children’s use.

“We need the community to know about the potential dangers of it,” he said

“We need the community to know about the potential dangers of it,” he said

It follows a University of Adelaide study, released last month, which found no advantages but some worrying side effects for depressed adolescents taking paroxetine, found in Aropax and Paxil. The research re-examined a previous study, funded by GlaxoSmithKline, which had found paroxetine was safe and effective.

Critical and Ethical Mental Health Research Group Professor Jon Jureidini said: “It wasn’t until the data was made available for re-examination that it became apparent that paroxetine was linked to serious adverse reactions, with 11 of the patients taking paroxetine engaging in suicidal or self-harming behaviours compared with only one person in the group of patients who took the placebo.”

He added: “Our study also revealed that paroxetine was no more effective at relieving the symptoms of depression than a placebo.”

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

My Introduction Thread

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

We have until the 14th. Feb 2018.

URGENT REQUEST Please consider submitting  for the petition on Prescribed Drug Dependence and Withdrawal currently awaiting its third consideration at the Scottish Parliament. You don't even have to be from Scotland. By clicking on the link below you can read some of the previous submissions but be warned many of them are quite harrowing.

http://www.parliament.scot/GettingInvolved/Petitions/PE01651

Please tell them about your problems taking and withdrawing from antidepressants and/or benzos.

Send by email to petitions@parliament.scot and quote PE01651 in the subject heading. Keep to a maximum of 3 sides of A4 and you can't name for legal reasons any doctor you have consulted. Tell them if you wish to remain anonymous. We need the numbers to help convince the committee members we are not isolated cases. You have until mid February. Thank you

Recovering paxil addict

None of the published articles shed light on what ssri's ... actually do or what their hazards might be. Healy 2013.

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

"Every time I read of a multi-person shooting, I always presume that person had just started a SSRI or had just stopped."  Dr Mosher. Me too!

Over two decades later, the number of antidepressant prescriptions a year is slightly more than the number of people in the Western world. Most (nine out of 10) prescriptions are for patients who faced difficulties on stopping, equating to about a tenth of the population. These patients are often advised to continue treatment because their difficulties indicate they need ongoing treatment, just as a person with diabetes needs insulin. Healy 2015

I believe the ssri era will soon stand as one of the most shameful in the history of medicine. Healy 2015

Hi Aussie mob,

Q&A did an episode on mental health.  Someone in the audience asked a great question which has since been put up on facebook encouraging people to engage.  You many want to do so!

Hi All,

I'm from the Central Coast of NSW was labelled a schizophrenic. I miss my voices big time, they were the most positive & loving thing to happen to me. Taught and advised me on many things. Have been pumped with max dose of Abilify now since April this year turned into a lifeless, unhealthy & unhappy zombie.

Have experienced all the horrible side affects of these poisonous plaguey drugs.. Akathesia, libido, Anhedonia.. the lot.

I hope someday I can be healthy & active again, I'm only 22, miss being "psychotic" and hearing my guardian angels.

Am currently stuck on a community treatment order - desperately trying to find a way out with not much luck thus far..

Best wishes to all of you

I've had contact with Tony Nikolic and he encourages anyone who's been on the drugs listed to contact them. The more people, the better.

[*]At 15 years was put on 50mg of Zoloft for generalized anxiety and panic disorder.

[*]2006 Tried to withdrawal from 50mg . Doctor told me I would have no trouble. I tampered over about a month (50mg-0) which left me with severe and debilitating withdrawal symptoms. Doctors put my dose up to 75mg mistaking my withdrawal symptoms as a relapse. Stayed on Zoloft 75mg since 2006.

March 2015- adverse reaction between Zoloft (75mg) an antibiotic and anti nausea drug resulting in debilitating symptoms/recovery identical to withdrawal. Have not altered or changed dose since 2006.

I only filled out one page that was pretty much a survey, just simple questions for them to get numbers and a general idea I guess of where to go.

Drayton  Sher Lawyers

From the West Australian:

Compo claim over ‘suicidal feelings’ pills

                                                           Cathy O'Leary September 23, 2015, 12:50 am

Several West Australians have come forward to join a class action by a Sydney law firm seeking compensation for side effects from antidepression drugs.

Drayton Sher Lawyers said yesterday it was preparing a compensation claim against the manufacturers of a range of antidepressants.

It is alleging they can cause dangerous side effects, including suicidal thoughts and behaviour.

The drugs include the SSRI-type antidepressants setraline, sold as Zoloft, and paroxetine, which is sold as Aropax.

Concerns have been raised in Australia and overseas about the safety of several antidepressants, most recently the use of paroxetine in teenagers after decade-old trial data was reanalysed

Last week, University of Adelaide researchers said that although the drug claimed to be a safe and effective treatment for depression in adolescents, it was ineffective and associated with serious side effects.

Professor Jon Jureidini from the university’s Critical and Ethical Mental Health Research Group, said a study funded by SmithKline Beecham, now GlaxoSmithKline, reported in 2001 that paroxetine was effective and safe for depression in adolescents.

But a re-examination of the data linked paroxetine to serious adverse reactions, with 11 of the users in the study engaging in suicidal or self-harming behaviours compared with only one person in the group of patients who took the placebo.

Australian health authorities maintain there may be a small increase in suicidal thoughts in children and adolescents when they first start taking antidepressants.

A spokesman for Drayton Sher said it had received inquiries about the class action from people in NSW, WA and Queensland.

It has expert witnesses prepared to help with the case and give evidence.

Began taper 28 Feb. 2015. Pristiq 50mg down to 45mg. Had one month of w/d symptoms. Started CES therapy in March. No w/d symptoms down to 30mg.

October 2015 , taking 25mg Pristiq. Capsules compounded with slow-release additive.

March 2016 , 21mg

Hi

Re: class action lawsuit

It Does not matter if your drug is not on their list as long as it is a AntiD.

Tricky.  Abilify is um, neuroleptic approved to "boost" anti-d's, right?

My suggestions are not medical advice, you are in charge of your own medical choices.

A lifetime of being prescribed antidepressants that caused problems (30 years in total). At age 35 flipped to "bipolar," but was not diagnosed for 5 years. Started my journey in Midwest United States. Crossed the Pacific for love and hope; currently living in Australia.   CT Seroquel 25 mg some time in 2013.   Tapered Reboxetine 4 mg Oct 2013 to Sept 2014 = GONE (3 years on Reboxetine).     Tapered Lithium 900 to 475 MG (alternating with the SNRI) Jan 2014 - Nov 2014, tapered Lithium 475 mg Jan 2015 -  Feb 2016 = GONE (10 years  on Lithium).  Many mistakes in dry cutting dosages were made.

Hi Fresh

Oh sorry my earlier comment was referring to anyone in general not myself. They said even though it states specific drugs on the info sheet, it dosnt have to be those exact ones. As long as it's antidepressants, generic versions etc. I'm ok, still having ups and downs with recovery and family drama but getting sorted now. Thanks

I was glad to hear that Pfizer got sued in Australia recently as people were suffering psychiatric side effects from their parkinson disease drug.
