Low white blood cell count

Hello all

I wasn't sure where to post this so I thought I'd put it here.

I just wondered if anyone here has a low white blood cell count?

I've had neutropenia for several years (a consistent low white blood cell count, specifically my neutrophils). I read somewhere that AIDS patients are very likely to develop akathisia if they take ssris so it would make sense that someone with a low white blood cell count would have problems too. I'm wondering if there's any connection between a low white blood cell count and psychiatric drug reactions.

I was also told a few years back, when my neutropenia was being investigated, that I had missing alpha-1 protein but this was never followed up. I'm wondering whether these unusual blood test findings contribute to drug sensitivities.

The only way out is through.

I recently read something about a possible relationship between Topamax and low white blood cell count. I know Topamax is for the treatment of migraines, but it's often used off label for people diagnosed with bi-polar as an adjunct to help stabilize mood and counter the weight gain associated with many of psych meds prescribed for bipolar. I was looking up the information for someone else... I'll see if I can locate the article again if it's of interest to you.

1988-2012: Prozac @ 60mg to treat an eating disorder. Several unsuccessful attempts to discontinue.Fall 2012: Failed attempt to discontinue then -> 40mg Prozac and added 150mg Wellbutrin. Late summer 2013:Began slower Prozac taper.Spring 2014:Got to 10mg Prozac, 75mg of Wellbutrin -April 2014: 9mg Prozac & 37.5mg Wellbutrin 2x/day -> 9mg Prozac & 25 mg Wellbutrin 2x/day->9mg Prozac 1x/day & ~8mg Wellbutrin 2x/day -> 8.1mg Prozac, 0 WellbutrinSept '14: 8.1mg Prozac -> crashed hardOct '14: 10mg ProzacNov '14: 20mg -> 30mgDec '14: 30mg, Feb 10: 27mg. I had low white cell blood count, also b12 deficiency, don't know if it was a problem before my protracted withdrawal as i was refused any blood tests for two years.

Nov 2007 - Feb 2010 prozac 20mg

Feb 2010 - April 2010 prozac 40mg

Cold Turkey Prozac April 2010 due to severe cramps/bleeding

Severe withdrawal symptoms thereafter and protracted withdrawal continuing.

Thank you both. Awful that you were refused blood tests, Chrissy. Addax, it would be great to see the article. Thanks!

Some pdocs believe depression affects the immune system. Kelly Brogan just had an article on mercola.com about this. Some of the anticonvulsants used for bipolar, etc. have to be watched very carefully for this, so I wouldn't be surprised if some other psych drugs could cause it.

1st round Prozac 1989/90, clear depression symptoms. 2nd round Prozac started 1999 when admitted to dr. I was tired. Prozac pooped out, switch to Cymbalta 3/2006. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder due to mania 6/2006--then I was taken abruptly off Cymbalta and didn't know I had SSRI withdrawal. Lots of meds for my intractable "bipolar" symptoms.

Zyprexa started about 9/06, mostly 5mg. Tapered 4/12 through12/29/12

Wellbutrin. XL 300 mg started 1/07, tapered 1/18/13 through 7/8/13

Oxazepam mostly continuously since 6/06, 30mg since 12/12, tapered 1.17.14 through 8.26.15

11/06 Lithium 600mg twice daily, 2.2.14 400mg TID DIY liquid, 2.12.14 1150mg, 3.2.14 1100mg, 3.18.14 1075mg, 4/14 updose to 1100mg, 6.1.14 900 mg capsules 7.8.14 810mg, 8.17.14 725mg, 8.24.24 700mg...10.22.14 487.5mg, 3.9.15 475mg, 4.1.15 462.5mg 4.21.15 450mg 8.11.15 375mg, 11.28.15 362.5mg, back to 375mg four days later, 3.4.16 updose to 475 (too much going on to risk trouble)

9/4/13 Toprol-XL 25mg daily for sudden hypertension, tapered 11.12.13 through 5.3.14, last 10 days or so switched to atenolol

7.4.14 Started Walsh Protocol

I haven't been able to find the article. I can't remember what terms I was using when I did the search. There's some anecdotal info here and there. I'll keep looking.

Thanks all for your replies. Addax, no problem at all and thanks for taking the time to look. A low white cell count (neutropenia) is something I've had for several years and I never had depression during those years. I'd also never been on psychiatric drugs at that point. I just started wondering whether there was a link between this and severe drug reactions.

The only way out is through.
