carbonek3
I have been living in New York for the past 2 1/2 years. I see that no one has responded to this thread so far, but thought I would, in case someone has any resources or doctor recommendations. In other threads I've noted that some people have had success with Dr. Brogan and Dr. Samoon. Unfortunately, I have limited insurance coverage and a low income, so neither is an option for me. On Mad in America, but not on this board, I've seen Sarton Weinraub and the Person-Centered Resource Center listed in the service directory. They take many insurances, and their price point of $100-150 is more manageable for me, especially if I can get some out-of-network coverage. Does anyone have any knowledge of or experience with them? Because Sarton Weinraub has praised Breggin's work, there is a possibility that he does not believe in post-continuation withdrawal syndrome. 2007 - 2010 10 mg escitalopram, switched to 20 mg citalopram (sometimes 40 mg, decreased w/o taper)2011 20 mg citalopram, 150 mg buproprion SR, 10 mg ambien for 3 months2015 February 20 mg citalopram, 150 mg buproprion SR reduced to 100 mg March 20 mg citalopram, 75 mg buproprionApril 20 mg citalopram, 56.25 --> 37.5 mg buproprionMay 20 mg citalopram, 18.75 mg buproprion Link to post
nycdreamer
Hi guys. Are you in Manhattan? I live in midtown! Zoloft from 2006-2014. Suffered hypomanic episode in 2014 and tried a multitude of meds. Ended up on low dose Prozac for 1 month. Currently withdrawing off of Prozac. Link to post
leahy
I live on Long Island. Sharing resources in New York could be very helpful to us all. A support group would be wonderful. I hope more people see this. I've been on SA since April 1, 2015 and just came across this today. The truth is I have not had much clarity of mind or sense of well being these months and can easily miss things even though I read SA constantly, reading the same thing 2 or 3 times without realizing it... leahy
Hi Laa, Surviving Antidepressants is a really good support system. I know how difficult it is to come off these drugs. We all know. I am so sorry you are having a bad time. Please hang on. We all want to help you very much. Have you gone to introductions and written a signature? It's not hard to do and it will help the moderators advise on how to deal with your particular situation. Someone will come along soon and give you more advice than I can. It helps if they have information about what medications you are dealing with. We all care about you. You are not alone. thelonewalker
Hi all I too live near New York city, in Jersey City to be specific, 10 mins from lower Manhattan. I was wondering if anybody would be able to recommend good doctors in the region who have successful taper cases. I have been on Luvox 300 mg, Buspar 10 mg and Xanax 0.5 mg for almost 6 years after I had a severe panic attack.I have a history of severe OCD/depression/anxiety. Never had any problems on meds. Now I m almost symptom free for last 3 years. But starting last year, have been experiencing drop in physical stamina, frequent sore throats, sometimes flu-like illness triggered by light exercise. Although the fatigue seems to alleviated by sleep, but that has meant my sleep requirements have increased tremendously. When I stumbled upon this forum while looking for answers I learnt that this may be a case of delayed onset side effects caused by SSRI.So was wondering if I should start with taper. Look forward to find solution to my problem here. Hope I havent bored you with my story Thanks Been on Luvox 300 mg, Buspar 10 mg and Xanax 0.5 mg from Jun 2010 to present (Apr 2016) after I had a severe panic attack.I have a history of severe OCD/depression/anxiety for 10 years prior to 2010, which although had been gradually improving on its own. Never had any problems on meds. Never took any other meds or drugs in my life. Almost symptom free (no mental health issues) since Jun 2014. But starting Jan 2015, have been experiencing drop in physical stamina, frequent sore throats, sometimes flu-like illness triggered by light exercise. Fatigue goes away with sleep, but that has meant my sleep requirements have increased. Have always remained fully functional. This is not medical advice. leahy
Your story is not boring at all, lonewalker! Sometimes these medications affect us in ways we are not aware of while taking them. Since you are feeling relatively 'good' right now, it might be a good time to consider beginning a taper. Lowering your dosages VERY slowly is the ideal way of coming off. You would have the luxury of not struggling with the pressure of time to get off. thelonewalker
Thanks leahy.. Your reply is a welcome change of the day, especially since I am yet to see a psychiatrist (will be in the coming week) and also since today I feel more uncomfortably fatigued than I have felt ever before..! Good to see that I have at least something positive to think of as of now (no time pressure) .. Stormstrong
Wow, hello. I'm really glad to find this thread. Do any of you use Skype together? I've spent most of my life online and on forums... face to face support would be a nice change, too. Am also looking for a good doctor that can guide me through the withdrawals. I'm on Medicaid, so will have to see how viable this is. I've been living in Nyc for something like 16 years, though I'm not originally from here. I've no idea how or why I'm still here, as I can't wait to live somewhere rural, pretty and quiet; I'm in poverty, at the moment, though. But I think there's much opportunity for healing here. I live at the very north tip of Manhattan, by some grace... the parks keep me sane. Terribly lonely, supported by family I need to get away from, and I have an appointment on Tuesday at Vocational Rehab... that's really my only hope. 2000: Paxil, low dose. 2001: Paxil, quickly tapered off. 2006: Zoloft, 25mg. 2007: Wellbutrin, low dose, discontinued after a week or a month. 2007-2009: Zoloft, increasing dose (up to 75mg). 2009-2011: Zoloft, failed withdrawal attempts (cold-turkey; fast tapering). 2009-2011: Trying out Cymbalta, Celexa, Prozac, Lexapro, Ambien, Ativan, and Xanax. 2012-2015: Zoloft, 100mg to 200mg. 2013: Trazadone for Zoloft-induced insomnia, 25mg to 50mg. 2015: Trileptal, dose?, withdrew; Bupropion, up to 200mg. 2016: Zoloft, 137mg, Bupropion, 150mg, Trazodone, 25mg. 05/21/16: Began Zoloft taper - 10% from 150mg - 137ish mg 06/23/16: Zoloft taper - 125mg 08/03/16: Bupropion XL taper - cut 150mg pill in crude half (mistake) 10/31: Zoloft successfully down to 100mg. Staying on 100mg for 2-3 months to let my brain rest. 11/09: Wellbutrin SR prescribed, 150mg once a day, for withdrawal. 12/11: Wellbutrin SR, twice daily - minus 18ishmg = 112.50mg 09/30/17: Off Wellbutrin SR successfully. Zoloft taper: 90ish mg (shaving it off). Trazodone: still at 50mg. June 2018: Zoloft: 80ish (shaving off). Trazodone: 6mg. End of 2018: Off Trazodone. 01/20: Zoloft: 70ish? 08/20: Still around 80 or 70. Tapering by only 15 shaves each month. 04/2021: 50mg! Link to post
Zant808
I'm in New Jersey and it takes on average an hour for me to get into New York City. I've been on dozens of psychiatric medications starting with being forced to take Prozac back as a minor in the mid 1990s. All doctors would cold turkey me from medications. I did not learn about withdrawal until the mid 2000's by reading Dr. Breggin's books and finding sites similar to this one. I had one successful full cleansing from medication in 2007 and began to recover from some of the iatrogenic damages. I started to drink alcohol in 2008 to try and recover from PSSD and then about 6 months later, I lost my ability to sleep and was put into an inpatient psychiatric facility and redrugged. The only med combination that has allowed me to sleep was 1250 mg of Depakote ER and 3 mg Klonopin. However, my quality of life is terrible on these meds. I want to try to get off everything now once again. I have failed a couple of times trying to come off these meds recently but will try again once I can find a psychiatrist who understands withdrawal and can support me. UPDATE: I have not consumed any alcohol in over 10 years. May 2019 - I started to reduce Anafranil very slowly so I can see a PSSD specialist. I also plan on trying stem cell therapy to repair my iatrogenic brain damage. Current meds: 1125 mg Depakote Sprinkles, 3 mg Klonopin Current side effects: PSSD, insomnia, odd sleep schedule, anhedonia, lack of motivation, cognitive issues, memory loss, hair loss, weight gain, dry mouth Link to post

fightback72
Hey everyone. I live in the Bronx, New York. Would love to have more support. Doxepin 200mg in April 1996. Switched to Prozac in November 1997. Had terrible anxiety and nausea from Prozac. Switched then to Zoloft 50mg in December 1997. Reduced to 25mg Zoloft in Early April 2012? Didn't know then to note it down. Down to 25mg every 4 days around Early October 2012? Again didn't know to take note. Experiencing interdose withdrawal since May 2017. Reinstated Zoloft daily at 12.5mg tablets on August 3, 2017 so I can stabilize and finally taper off. Started to experience shaking all over after 6 days on it. Felt too strong for me. Reduced the dosage to 3.125mg switching to homemade liquid on August 9, 2017. In addition, I take Omega-3 Fish Oil, MSM, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, Evening Primrose Oil, probiotics and Magnesium Glycinate. http://survivingantidepressants.org/topic/15444-fightback72-tolerance-withdrawal-need-to-start-taper/ Link to post

Nony
Hello. I'm new to this website - hope this is allowed. I'm a victim of psychiatric medication taken as prescribed - though I am currently not suffering from antidepressants specifically. However, I do have a friend who's four years off an anti-d and still suffering. I'd like to form a Meetup for people who are suffering from withdrawal symptoms a year or more off their medications, taken as prescribed. Are there any people on this group who live in the tristate area and would be interested? 3.5 years off low dose Xanax, taken as prescribed, and still sick with emotional, cognitive, and physical symptoms. Searching for tristate New Yorkers so we can do a WD support group. Link to post

I'm pursing a few leads for psychiatrists to work with and will let you know what I find. So far I've found Ellen Vora through an interview in which she expresses sympathy with our cause. She currently has a short waitlist. She charges $2,000 for an initial consultation and follow-up appointments can be in-person ($600/hr) or by phone/video ($275/30-minutes). She is sympathetic but lacks true experience in how to deal with the complexities of medication withdrawal. I know this by someone she treated and while warm and caring, she is out of depth in terms of what is really needed for guidance in withdrawal. This site has much better guidance and I directed the person who worked with her here. Tends to offer much of the same advice as Kelly Brogan who I believe was her mentor. And while some of the advice, healthy eating, detoxing etc can be helpful, it is very generic. Sept 2013-Apr 2014: After death of my mom put on as series of meds.
