Drugs that can trigger suicide or homicide

This is an incredibly long list...I can't believe it.  Dr. Healy compiled a list of drugs that can cause suicide or homicide, and it includes a number of drugs used for physical problems as well as many psych drugs.

Scroll to near the end of the article found here.  Also warning the rest of the article is disturbing so give it a pass if you are sensitive.  The drug list is in a table form near the bottom so is easy to find without reading the article:

http://davidhealy.org/left-hanging-suicide-in-bridgend/

I wonder if this list would read as a list of drugs for people in withdrawal to avoid too?

Also statins cause homicides?  Or is that supposed to mean just suicide?  I know they can cause depression but do they cause violent behavior?  Very concerning.

I could add a couple here Atenolol a blood pressure med which is a beta blocker and H2 - inhibitor for acid reflux.called  famotidine

both cause impulsive suicidal thought for me both were taken in the last year.

Luckily I have had enough drug reactions I knew it right off and stopped taking them... ignoring suggestions from outside me folks to try them a bit longer... cocky pot. I quit.

I think his list is lacking when I wonder how many of these drugs people here have taken.  I think I will do a quick count and post how many I have been given.

I have taken in my life 25 of these drugs on his list...

What is your number... :)

peace all it is just math or is it...?

Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

25?  Wow.

I counted ten or so.  I am not sure about one though and there's another that got banned a while ago which probably would be on the list if it was still around.

Have been on Coreg for two days and already have developed depression.   This drug is history.  And to think I was only taking 1/2 the starting dose.

Seeing a cardiologist on Monday for another med opinion and to discuss other issues.   She received an excellent rating from several people online so hopefully, she lives up to her reputation.

Drug cocktail 1995 - 2010

Psychiatric: Somnolence.

The following adverse events were reported with a frequency of > 1% but ≤ 3% and more frequently with COREG (carvedilol) : Flu syndrome, cerebrovascular accident, peripheral vascular disorder, hypotoniadepression, gastrointestinal pain, arthritis, and gout. The overall rates of discontinuations due to adverse events were similar in both groups of patients. In this database, the only cause of discontinuation > 1%, and occurring more often on carvedilol was hypotension (1.5% on carvedilol, 0.2% on placebo).

I wonder if doctors report all bad reactions.  These numbers may change if they did.

The effects I had from Atenolol took some time to pass tho the extreme of it all was gone in about two days... I did not trust my thoughts for a few wks as I know how these things can work and laid very low for a time carefully watching my own thinking when I could and hiding out in a safe place when I could not quite get a handle on it.

I hope your being gentle with yourself and that you can control you own personal environment well while waiting for this to pass I hope it does not take too long.  I am always thinking how long till this passes and has anything been changed by this drug that may react with the next drug... since I have this Ad experience I am much more careful with drugs still got caught on this one.

Scared me enough that when I was given a drug for pain in the kidneys at emerg I did not bite... thought I was sick enough without adding a drug reaction to my list of problems. I looked the drug up it had a component that affects the neurotransmitter noripinephrine and I went ouch I am out... had the pain been much worse I may have taken it.  I wonder how much of this hypersensitivity to meds and reactions is because of withdrawal it remains an unknown.  One I wish I did not have to deal wtih but trying to be sensible about it and knowing my own history... I am sure I come across as a difficult patient as I say no to a lot of meds.  I would rather be difficult than suffer reactions with unknown timelines and unknown affects on Antidepressant changed systems in my body.

Sounds like being a bit of an alien doesn't it... yet this is how I see it.  I try to protect myself best I can.

Hope you are ok.

Peace

Thanks btdt.

I am doing much better.  I took half the pill yesterday just to be on the safe side and still suffered horrible depression.  Fortunately, it didn't last as long.   Today, it feels like it is completely gone.  Hopefully, I won't have any rebound symptoms from the HBP and tachycardia and can stop the med today.

What blows my mind is that I didn't even take the full starting dose as prescribed by my PCP.  If I had, god only knows what would have happened.

My mother was extremely hypersensitive to meds and I think the combination of inheriting that trait from her and being sensitive to meds as the result of being on psych drugs has made taking drugs a dicey combination.   Yup, better to be seen as a difficult patient than to suffer adverse affects.

Sorry you suffered depression also from a BB and recovered from it.

I don't know if I am genetically predisposed to reactions I want to get tested and had already made an apt to discuss it when I slept in and missed it ... only ending up at the same clinic later in the day and being dx with a kidney infection... took a few different drugs to get rid of it... still have some odd blood work results to discuss from emerg once I get back to the doc but will be trying to get this testing.

One drug given at emerg was a pain killer with norepinephrien and morphine... they were not sure it was not a kidney stone too... but did not test so guess they won't too concerned...

I came home and looked it up... soon as I seen norepinepherine ( why can't I spell that word today) I decided I would make due without it... too scared of drugs... still there were moments of second thoughts when the pain was bad... next time I think I will not even fill it I will ask the pharmacist what is in it and just skip it. Why do I pay for these drugs for nothing... stupid fear I guess.

This is quote from the article:

"Be aware that the following drugs and likely many others can all cause suicide and in many cases homicide. - See more at: http://davidhealy.org/left-hanging-suicide-in-bridgend/#sthash.kCQHx7yM.dpuf"

I looked for statin side effects today because I found something new to me when and where I did not expect it.

"Though several cases of "myositis" were reported as being triggered by the use of various statin drugs (used to control blood cholesterol), the behavior of muscle inflammation linked to statin drugs is different than either dermatomyositis or polymyositis (D.M./P.M.) Muscle biopsies of the statin patients showed rhabdomyolysis, with patterns of degeneration and regeneration of muscle tissue, whereas biopsies of dermatomyositis show "perivascular infiltrates of inflammatory cells,"and muscle regeneration is not present. However, a patient who already has either D.M. or P. M. may need expert advice before taking the risk of statin therapy, since a bout of muscle pain could then be attributed to either the statin or the underlying condition.

High blood levels of creatine kinase (CPK) are often, but not always present in dermatomyositis or polymyositis, causing some patients to be misdiagnosed. The "CPK" levels tend to rise when abnormal inflammation occurs to skeletal muscles and/or other areas of the body. However, since dermatomyositis is highly individualistic, the CPK may be helpful but should not be definitive as a tool for diagnosis. Obviously, extremely high levels on CPK (as seen in rhabdomyolysis) indicate heavy damage to these muscles and other internal organs, such as the kidneys.[clarification needed]. Without treatment, kidney damage occurs and death in the more severe cases. Since dermatomyositis may still damage the heart, intestines, or breathing muscles in a "patchy" way, the definitive test is a muscle biopsy on the affected areas (usually the upper arms/ upper legs). Expertly done E.M.G. testing usually tracks "flagrant" D.M., though again, the neurologist should look for "patches" of involvement in unusual patients who seem to have "normal" tests after having other indications of D.M./P.M.."

rhabdomyolysis now where have we seen that fun word before?  A lady on pp said she had it I said I thought I had it when I was peeing blood years ago... went to 3 different hosp... yes I did in a cab I was too sick to drive and not all in one day but two were in one day. I don't recall it being on the list of side effects before... as I am sure I would have looked when I found the word...not sure maybe I did maybe not I can't know with my brain.

BUT I did look just now and there it is.

Musculoskeletal: rhabdomyolysis

Just above and below this one is many other things I had interesting. Even if you show up with all the symptoms getting a dx is another story at least where I live apparently. First hosp told me I was pregnant so I took a cab to another city they checked my urine which was red and set me for a cat scan. I fell asleep waiting woke in the room being asked if I had any metal in my body and being felt up to check for metal... next thing is was morning they were releasing me.  I said what of my urine being bloody a double check was made I was given an antibiotic and sent home.  I got on a bus to go home... cops got on the bus looking for somebody guess it wasn't me.  Home I came. End of story.

I have managed to stress myself completely out by reliving this space in time not good for me but since I have done all the dirty work already.  I did a follow up call to the head of emerg and asked questions the red urine I was told must have been from me eating beets or some other thing.  I had not eaten in days before I got up out of bed and did the courageous journey to a larger city hosp as the one where I live was failing me. When I say I thought I was dying in wd I am not exaggerating I really did think I was dying.

Time for me to do a relaxation video... so if this was traumatizing to anyone besides me. Some things just have to be said or so it seems just now

peace all. .

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
