Treatment for Effexor Abuse and Addiction
Do You or Someone You Love Need Effexor Treatment?

An Effexor addiction can be developed when someone continuously abuses the drug. Effexor (chemically known as venlafaxine) is regarded as physically non-addictive, but a dependency on Effexor can be created through continued abuse. When dealing with an Effexor addiction, a person can expect to deal with some harmful side effects. When a person tries to stop abusing the drug, they more than likely will experience withdrawal symptoms. In addition to the physical symptoms, there will be psychological withdrawal effects as well. Some of the consequences experienced are stomach cramps, increased risk of suicide, erectile dysfunction, memory problems, sexual dysfunction, hallucinations, dizziness, depression, nausea, confused thinking and insomnia. If someone is experiencing an Effexor addiction, then they need to find help from an Effexor addiction treatment center.

Admitting there is an Effexor addiction is tremendously difficult because there must be a confession that Effexor has complete control over the person’s life. The decision to stop this addiction is a hard one to make because dedication and determination are required to succeed. It is unwise to take on this battle alone. The support of loved ones is definitely needed, as is a licensed counselor and an Effexor rehabilitation facility.

Are you dealing with an Effexor addiction? If so, then reflect for a moment on how the addiction is running your life. Take note of the destruction that is thrust upon your relationships with loved ones. Not only can your Effexor addiction destroy your relationships, it can also ruin your profession and your financial stability. Begin the healing today, admit there is a problem, and then ask for help. Talk to your loved ones about receiving their support. Enter an Effexor treatment center, find a licensed therapist, and join a support group. Do you know someone dealing with an Effexor addiction? Reach out to them in a gentle and caring manner. Let them know they are loved and you will help. Assist them in finding an Effexor detoxification facility. Help them realize how much hurt has been caused by abusing Effexor. Get them to understand that the Effexor addiction can be defeated, and you are there to help.

Treatment Plan for Effexor Addiction

To overcome an Effexor addiction, a treatment plan should be created. The treatment plan will consist of four components, which are loved ones, an Effexor treatment program, a counselor, and a support group. The recovery process will rely greatly on all four functioning as one team.

  • Loved ones – Loved ones will play a significant part in the recovery process and cannot be undervalued. They will provide support and help when recovery and treatment gets hard.
  • Professional counselor – A professional counselor will be able to create a personalized Effexor rehab program, and arrange to enter an Effexor treatment facility.
  • Effexor detoxification program – An Effexor detoxification program will help increase the odds for successfully beating an Effexor addiction.
  • Support group – A support group can provide accountability and guidance when facing the trials of preventing a relapse. They will be important in assisting to continue abstinence.
Treatment Levels for Effexor Addiction

There are several other severe disorders such as mood disorders, eating disorders, or additional substance abuse that will co-occur with an Effexor addiction. Fighting another addiction or eating disorder makes it harder to deal with an Effexor addiction. There are several levels of treatment provided by an Effexor treatment facility to assist in stopping an addiction. They range from residential treatment centers, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), partial hospitalization programs, and inpatient programs. Normally, these levels of care are usually more than what is required to defeat an Effexor addiction unless other co-occurring disorders are present. Frequently used treatment levels are:

  • Outpatient care – Outpatient programs are similar to IOPs but not as intense. There are fewer individual limits are placed on the patient, but personal venlafaxine treatment and group sessions are still applied.
  • Support groups – Support groups provide relapse supervision and accountability. The guidance they offer is key in prevailing over an Effexor addiction.
Types of Therapy for Effexor Addiction Treatment

As with the multiple types of treatment, there are also many different types of therapy used in helping someone overcome an Effexor addiction. Commonly, an Effexor treatment facility will apply a blend of behavior modification therapies. The center of these therapies is to focus on the psychological factors of an Effexor addiction. Some of the treatments included are:

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) – DBT introduces mindful awareness and stress management components into the standard behavioral therapies like CBT.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – ACT is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies combined in various ways with commitment and behavior-change strategies, to increase mental and emotional flexibility.
  • Supportive Programs – Programs like a 12 step program show great success in helping overcome addictions. It also includes support groups, group therapy, family therapy, etc.
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) – IPT concentrates on the interpersonal relations and social roles using a short-term supportive psychotherapy. IPT tries to help patients find better ways to handle and deal with existing issues or problems. There are four basic areas identified by IPT. They are unresolved grief, role disputes, role changes, and relationship shortcomings.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – CBT is a meth treatment program that deals with maladaptive thinking patterns in order to affect the patient’s behavior in a more encouraging manner. It also helps the patient replace negative coping skills with positive coping skills.

Find an Effexor treatment facility to aid with recovery. They are trained to help maintain the commitment, enthusiasm, sacrifice, energy, and time required to beat an Effexor addiction. It is a difficult road filled with successes and failures. An Effoxor treatment program may help level out the road. Remember that it is never to late and the tha the first step is admitting there is a problem.

Well there you have it. In black and white.

I kind of hoped somebody would take this on but I fail to trust they know what they are up against but who knows maybe they do.

I can't imagine anyone abusing Effexor in the way I understand abuse.  I don't know what they really mean but this term.

So I looked and I found  this

Separation From Self
Venlafaxine (Effexor XR)
Citation:   Anonymous. "Separation From Self: An Experience with Venlafaxine (Effexor XR) (ID 35190)". Erowid.org. Nov 16, 2004. erowid.org/exp/35190

DOSE:   oral Pharms - Venlafaxine (daily)
BODY WEIGHT: 180 lb

I consider myself to be a relatively sane and rational person.

At least now.

However, after faring a rather difficult time in my life I started to notice a few changes in my overall mental state. I was experiencing slight to mild paranoia, along with anxiety of a similar degree. After seeking the advice of a 'professional', I aquired a prescription of Effexor XR with a starting dose of 37.5 mg.

After a few days, the 37.5 mg dose didn't seem to do much. In an amazing feat of stupidity I took it upon myself to up my dose without a doctor's approval. I was now taking 75mg in the morning and 75mg in the evening. The day I upped my dose I noted a VERY distinct change in my mindstate. I had an overwhelming feeling of euphoria, coupled with a dark undertone that I wasn't able to put my finger on...yet. I also noticed that the effexor was almost fully dilating my pupils in regular to dim light. I found it to be quite amusing. At this point I thought that effexor was the answer for me. However, the side effects were starting to rear their ugly heads. I began having difficulty sleeping. Going to bed at 11:30pm but not falling asleep till 3-4am, then waking up at 7am. This continued for the duration of the time I took the drug.

I would wake up in the morning groggy and wanting to sleep for another 5 hours, but after taking effexor and a strong cup of coffee I was good to go. I found that caffiene and effexor were quite synergistic. The effexor produced a very controllable state of dreamy euphoria for me, along with a body load not unlike a medium sized dose of MDA. The caffiene increased the body stimulation, and helped clear the 'foggy euphoria' a little.

I quickly found myself abusing the effexor.

I found that if i opened the capsules and dumped the little balls inside directly onto my tounge, the effects became MUCH more pronounced. I very quickly went from a regular dosing schedule to Just opening a 150mg capsule on my tounge whenever I felt like. My doctor was quite generous with the refills on my script. Psychologicly I was breaking down. I lost all intrest in anything but myself. I quit my job. I quit going to school. Most days I would drive to a nearby coffeeshop and just sit drinking coffee and smoking profusely. Sometimes I would write, read, or draw. I know that sounds pretty normal, but the manner in which I went about these activities was not.

While reading a book I would circle words or phrases that held (at the time) some sort of hidden meaning or message. Throughout the book I would connect them and relate them to my current situation in life. After a short while, pretty much all of the books I owned were drawn on so badly that they are hardly worth reading now. My drawing and writing were equally as bizarre.

At this point the effect had changed notably. It's really hard to explain. The best way I can put it is: The euphoria and body load seemed to MERGE and increase tenfold. It would resonate throughout my body to the very core of my bone structure. I was absolutely enthralled with this feeling. I became very disassociative. For some reason I decided to ignore the fact that my day-to-day heartrate had increased exponentially. I ignored the fact that I was frequently mumbling to myself. I ignored the fact that I had almost stopped eating anything except effexor and coffee. But that was about to change.

Finally, the day came when the the powers that be found out I took 3 months worth of effezor in 1, and my supply was cut off. Over the phone, the doc mentioned (rather nonchalantly) that there *may* be some withdrawl symptoms and to step down my dose gradually with what I had left. While I stepped down my dose I felt 'normal'. No euphoria or heartbeat, no mumbling, just what I thought to be a normal mindstate. I assumed that after I ran out that there would be no withdrawl symptoms.

I was in for a shock. Literally.

A day or two after my last pill I quickly lapsed back into a paranoid mindstate. This time, the paranoia was MUCH MUCH worse (like smoking meth for 5 days on end) and it was coupled with VIOLENT mood swings of a negative nature. Top that off with the occassional delusion. But, of course, that was just the beginning. I started getting these 'shocks'. It felt like I had just stuck my finger in a light socket. At it's worst, it would happen a couple times a minute. Yet another difficult to explain feeling. The 'electricty' originated from the back of my head...often times accompanied with an extreme emotion. Usually this emotion was rage. Silly as it may sound, i was experiencing literal 'shocks' of sadness, rage, anger, and paranoia.

Psychologically it was torture. I found myself pacing the house at all times. I was punching random things at random times, and felt on the verge of exploding 24/7. Nightmares every night. No appetite. Sweaty, nervous, achy. It was difficult to talk. Forming words took effort that I didnt want to exert. I'm sure you get the point. There was one thing that was worse than all of this combined. The terrifyingly negative introspective mindstate I was in. My mind was filled with visions of every little thing I had messed up in my life. It was mostly focused on certain past relationships that were long gone....yet somehow those memories turned against me. It seemed almost karmic. It was the exact reverse of how effexor made me feel when I took it.....plus interest.

I would never wish this experience upon anyone.

If anybody who is reading this is/has gone through what I have, you have my respect. I know a few people who are afraid to stop for fear of the side effects. I can only hope that those who want to stop will, with help from those who care, never have to pick up another pill again. Thinking back on those days sickens my stomach. I feel fortunate enough to have been forced to stop. Otherwise....well...I can't even imagine the consequences.

Final word:

DO NOT take effexor. At least not in the way I did.

Once the lustre on the surface of the pill has worn away, only then will you finally realize the nightmare that is underneath.

I have to say his description of withdrawal is right on. I am a bit astounded that he had the clarity to write it so well.  Perhaps this is due to his short term use or the fact he tapered off in some manner.

I hope people are not using this drug as a recreation drug.  I hope his story stops some who were thinking of trying it.

It brings one other thought to my mind I once had my Effexor stolen out of my car when I was doing errands.  I had to make a police report that my prescription had been stolen in order for the doctor to give me a new one. I recall saying to the police at the time I can't believe anyone would want it as it does not make a person high.  I had taken it for years by then was a stripper already thought I was doing fine with my maintenance drug ...little did I know I was spellbound. Now I read this and it is all coming full circle.

There are more stories of Effexor abuse however none express the fact like this one it hit home for me.

I wish you all peace...

the title is a good one too Separation from self... if only I had found this in 2004 maybe I would not be here today. A bit of hidden truth can make all the difference in the world and while this may not have been your experience with Effexor ...complete personality change and loss of self consciousness it was mine.  So please don't delete it.

Uncontrolled Self-Medication with Venlafaxine in a Patient with Major Depressive Disorder

Abstract

Abstract

Antidepressants are known to have no significant ability to cause addiction. However, a recent study showed many individuals with mood disorders self-medicated with antidepressants to relieve symptoms. We report here a male physician, diagnosed five years ago with major depressive disorder, with insomnia, anxiousness, and chest heaviness. He began self-medicating with 150 mg of venlafaxine daily, without any monitoring. During his most recent severe depressive episode, he was taking up to 1,500 mg of venlafaxine daily. Without this medication, he experienced discontinuation syndrome, which included severe anxiety, chest heaviness, and breathing difficulty, and which he judged as indicating a more severely depressed state. He also experienced overdose symptoms, such as hypertension and tachycardia. He attempted suicide with drugs that he possessed. In conclusion, careful monitoring is needed when treating patients with venlafaxine, because its discontinuation syndrome is similar to symptoms of major depressive disorder, and suicidality may result from an overdose.

The idea that people are suffering Effexor addiction from abusing the drug is absurd. This is an addiction clinic trying to broaden its customer base.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

Antidepressants are incredibly addicting. There's nothing as fun as anhedonia, emotional blunting and sexual dysfunction  . My doctor perscribed me Celexa and within a month I was popping an entire script because the insomnia, lack of appetite and zombified personality was the best feeling in my life. Before long I was stealing to get money to score some AD pills.

Summer of 2007 started celexa at age 15.

December of 2013 MISDIAGNOSED with GERD and was perscribed ppi's.

Mid May 2014 went C/T(Stupidly) off of my 40MG of celexa due to an interaction to the ppi's. This interaction left my body damaged.

First of July of 2014 went back on my celexa at 5 mgs..

Currently adjusting to 5 mg's of Celexa.

Current meds: Adderall Xr 30 mg/ Celexa 5mg/ Buspar 15mg/ Vistaril 25mg/ Fish oil 1000mg/ B12 100mcg/ Mulit-vitamin.

Btdt,

I've never taken effexor, but I am sure that a Dr. has to approve the use of antidepressants (usually).  Also, from what I know, there are some legal implications encompassing the misuse of antidepressants, even now.  So, I would be careful about what is said and done to avoid making generalizations.  Even in the united states and canada there is some variation with regards to the use of prescriptions.  I would never want to be in a position where my integrity is in question.  The laws in the us may be different than in Canada or other countries, so I am just writing this as an FYI.  I've read much on this website that gives me hope, but as I said, there may some differences of opinion from time to time.

I was just kidding. I just thought the idea of someone using an antidepressant recreationally sounded dumb. Not only that, they're acting like the only people who have trouble going off of their antidepressants are the people who try to get high.

Ok but like I said some people do use heroine apparently to feel nothing.. so who knows there are a lot of people in the world and I have read more than one post where people used E for recreation not at normal doses .. I posted only the one story as the affect is what I felt when taking it too... "separation from self ".... I watched a video on utube of an addict in Toronto injecting welbutrin in his arm...every injection site left a huge sore still he did it.

Kids are using bath salts ...who knows what people will do a lot of things we never thought of maybe.

peace

I seen that article about the guy who was injecting wellbutrin to get high. Something interesting about wellbutrin is that it makes whatever it touches numb... just like cocaine. Makes me wonder if its related to cocaine. The wellbutrin high was described as "cocaine like".

Interesting.

"Bupropion is known to affect several different biological targets, and its mechanism of action is only partly understood.[9][10] It has been widely described as a weak norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor.[10][11] However, studies with humans suggest that it does not significantly affect dopamine levels in the brain at clinically-used doses, calling into question the role of its action at thedopamine transporter in its effects.[10][11] Bupropion also acts as a non-competitive antagonist of several neuronal nACh receptors.[10] Chemically, it belongs to the class of aminoketones and is similar in structure to stimulants such as cathinone andamfepramone, and to phenethylamines in general.[9]

Not that I get it all I don't.

    phenethylamine

A classification of chemical compounds, most of which are psychoactive drugs. Beta-Phenethylamine is neurotransmitter in the brain, and it is believed to be the body's natural version of amphetamine.
Some drugs that fall into the phenethylamine classification include all amphetamines (as well as methylphenidate), ephedrine, designer hallucinogens (2C-B, 2C-I etc.), mescaline, bupropion (Wellbutrin), and venlafaxine (Effexor), as well as the amino acids (D/L)Phenylalanine and L-Tyrosine.

Many (if not all) hallucinogenic phenethylamines are mentioned in the book PiHKAL (Phenethylamines i Have Known And Loved) by Dr. Alexander Shulgin and Ann Shulgin.
Dan: How exactly does Wellbutrin work as an apetite supressant?
Paul: Well, technically Wellbutrin is a phenethylamine and an amphetamine, so it blocks the reuptake of dopamine to curve your apetite.

List of cocaine analogues

Phenethylamines[edit]

Many phenethylamines are dopamine releasers, however, certain drugs of the family inhibit dopamine reuptake & transport which may be loosely classed as cocaine analogs. Dependent upon their specific configurations.

Allosteric functional DAT reuptake inhibitors[edit]

SoRI-20041 is a functional, but not structural, cocaine analog which violates traditional structure analog categorization in its case that it has an entirely other binding site. It is however an analog to cocaine in the sense that it functions as a partial DARI on DAT, although doing so when said DAT is compromised by amphetamine-type mediated release of DA. Something unaugmented cocaine cannot do.

I do not understand this either and would like somebody to explain it if they can.. I notice this at the bottom...

cocaine is related to dental freezing which I have had huge issues with...

Certain of the local anesthetics still have residual DRI properties,[8] although not normally ones that are easily available. These are expected to be more cardiotoxic than phenyltropanes. For example, dimethocaine has behavioral stimulant effects (and therefore not here listed below) if a dose of it is taken that is 10 times the amount of cocaine. Dimethocaine is equipotent to cocaine in terms of its anesthetic equivalency.[8]

More questions that answers but yep they are all related somehow

Thing is the man injecting the wellbutrin does not feel the holes he is burning into his arms with the injection because it is numbed by the drug just like dental freezing... but that effects must end and I seen his arm that has to hurt like hell when the drug wears off.

It seems like Wellbutrin's relationship to amphetamines and phenylethylamine  is what causes the "high" feeling in some people who inject it. Your posts pretty much confirmed my suspicion.

No I did not notice freezing when I was on it that I can recall... but it is related to the dental freezing...

now that I cannot tolerate Effexor any longer I also react to dental freezing

think it is all related to how some of us just hit a wall and can't do these drug any longer. I am one of those poeple.  I think I am simply damaged any related drug causes me issues.

When I started effexor I was flying, it was an amazing drug and it made me much more alive

and happy. I was so happy and confident that I racked up 1000s of £ of debt buying stuff for

my business that I was going to build from scratch. Gradually that faded

then I noticed that I went high when I missed a dose . (withdrawal hypomania)

So I skipped doses to get that feeling of being in control and creative. When the brain zaps

started and the flat feeling came back I upped the dose again and got the highs back.

Of course I didn't realise at the time that I washigh.  I even told my psychiatrist what I was doing

and he gave me a telling off, explaining thatI needed a consistent level to stay well.

I stopped playing around with it and eventually ended up bedridden with no emotion or motivation.

I never took more than the prescribed dose or craved it and never considered myself an addict.

What worries me most about those clinics is that there is no mention of tapering!

**I am not a medical professional, if in doubt please consult a doctor with withdrawal knowledge.

Different drugs occasionally (mostly benzos) 1976 - 1981 (no problem)

2002  effexor.

Tapered  March 2012 to March 2013, ending with 5 beads.

Withdrawal April 2013 . Reinstated 5 beads reduced to 4 beads May 2013

Restarted taper  Nov 2013

OFF EFFEXOR Feb 2015    :D

Tapered atenolol and omeprazole Dec 2013 - May 2014

Tapering tramadol, Feb 2015 100mg , March 2015 50mg

 July 2017 30mg.  May 15 2018 25mg

Taking fish oil, magnesium, B12, folic acid, bilberry eyebright for eye pressure.

My story http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/4199-hello-mammap-checking-in/page-33

Lesson learned, slow down taper at lower doses. Taper no more than 10% of CURRENT dose if possible

It seems like Wellbutrin's relationship to amphetamines and phenylethylamine  is what causes the "high" feeling in some people who inject it. Your posts pretty much confirmed my suspicion.

Did effexor give you dental freezing?.

Strange... makes me wonder.
