Laura: Need advice

Laura

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, this is my first post here. I was taking citalopram20 for 3 months.. While on them i had nausea, muscle pains, feeling tired all the time, generally feeling like plant, emotionally too, i had nightmares and repetitive thoughts. I became also paranoid towards my bf. This was not me and i knew it. So i tapered for a week to 10 and a week to 5. Immediately after i stopped the pills i started to cry everyday (i couldnt cry on the pills) and slowly to have some emotions back... Meanwhile my bf left me and i feel at the bottom, anxiety is back, they prescribed me the cit for health anxiety. Now almost 2months after i m off the pill i feel ill, the flu like thing, nausea is here again, i dont feel well at all and im trying to pretend for the people around me that im ok. With these symptoms of being sick i start to feel bad again. I think in 7weeks i shouldnt have any symptoms. I have headache too and sometimes my jaw hurts. So for 5months my life is hell and im really tired of this. Its not fair. Can anyone tell me if this can be withdrawal or if anyone had the same. The only good is i dont see nightmares every night. I feel like i lost my life...

Hello Laura and welcome to SA.

What you are describing are typical withdrawal symptoms. To prevent them from occurring and come off the drug safely we recommend reducing 10 % from your current dose every 30 days. You went much faster than that so it's not a surprise that your brain is reacting to this.

So you have been off the medication for 7 weeks now?

We usually advise reinstating a very small amount of the drug to reduce the severity of withdrawal symptoms. Do you still have Citalopram? Taking as little as 1 mg might give you a relief from the symptoms. Unfortunately, if they start and last that log they tend to stay and sometimes even intensify. Taking such a small dose might help and if it doesn't you will see it immediately and can stop taking it.

Here is the explanation of how it works.

What would help us to give you more suggestions is putting your drug history in your signature: http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/893-please-put-your-withdrawal-history-in-your-signature/

You will find a lot of friendly support here and great information about how to deal with every aspect of this situation.

Laura don't go back on a full dose, you're probably too sensitized now for that. I'd say try 5 mg and see what happens. If it's over-activating you can go to 1 or 2 mg.

Started on Prozac and Xanax in 1992 for PTSD after an assault. One drug led to more, the usual story. Got sicker and sicker, but believed I needed the drugs for my "underlying disease". Long story...lost everything. Life savings, home, physical and mental health, relationships, friendships, ability to work, everything. Amitryptiline, Prozac, bupropion, buspirone, flurazepam, diazepam, alprazolam, Paxil, citalopram, lamotrigine, gabapentin...probably more I've forgotten.

Started multidrug taper in Feb 2010.  Doing a very slow microtaper, down to low doses now and feeling SO much better, getting my old personality and my brain back! Able to work full time, have a full social life, and cope with stress better than ever. Not perfect, but much better. After 23 lost years. Big Pharma has a lot to answer for. And "medicine for profit" is just not a great idea.

Everyone feels that same way, nobody wants to go back on them. But we are saying, just get back on a low dose to stabilize so that you can taper off them safely and then stay off them forever.

When the symptoms come back like this, it usually means you're going to continue to have trouble. Sometimes it settles down and then it comes back harder many months down the road and it can last for a year or more. Believe me, we don't want you to have to take these pills, we just know what happens and we hope we can help you avoid that suffering.

Can you see if you can get a prescription for the liquid, and just take 1 mg or 2 mg and see if that helps relieve your symptoms at all? If you take a small amount and you get some relief, that's a good sign.

Also, it is normal for people to go on and off these drugs once or twice without much trouble, but sooner or later everyone hits the wall.

It's hard to tell with these drugs. But you were taking it for a much shorter period than most of us.

Have your symptoms been changing lately, since you joined for instance: intensifying, getting weaker or are they the same?

What is your symptom pattern now?

The reason why Rhi said not to wait too long is because after a certain time reinstatement doesn't work and some people end in a state called prolonged withdrawal where symptoms last for months and drugs only make them worse.

I know it's a tough choice but 1 mg is a very small dose and the fact that you came here means you are were not/ are not feeling well.

As I said, it's your choice and it depends on how you are feeling.

Hi Laura, I'm sorry that you are feeling so sick.  Unfortunately we haven't found anything

except magnesium and fish oil that helps with withdrawal for most people. Some have found

different things that may have helped them but many people have found that supplements and

homeopathy can make things worse.  Sadly the only way to stop withdrawal symptoms is reinstating

the drug.  As already suggested a tiny dose can be all that is needed to make things more bearable.

None of us wanted to reinstate, every single one of us here wanted to be off the drugs and no-one

wants to go back.  I was one who did not want to go back on but within days I was so glad that I did.

It is awful that we have to do that but for me and many others it was the best option.

No-one can tell you how long it takes to feel better, everyone is different but when you feel so bad

after 2 months off it is likely that it could go on for quite some time.

I wish I could make it better for you or tell you there is something that will make it better but the only thing

I know of is the original drug, and time.

**I am not a medical professional, if in doubt please consult a doctor with withdrawal knowledge.

Most probably there won't be a liquid form (we don't have liquid forms of drugs in my country either). Have you read through this thread? http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/2023-tips-for-tapering-off-celexa-citalopram/

Making your own solution to get such a small dose as mg might look intimidating at first but is actually very simple. All you need is a syringe that they have for very little money in ever pharmacy (I have 2 ml and 5 ml ones).

Making a Celexa solution yourself
See http://survivinganti...lution-yourself

Feel free to ask any questions you might have.

I was very surprised when my GP actually got interested in tapering and using liquid suspensions. I expect most doctors would think it weird to say the least so I personally wouldn't expect help from them. I'm here because my doctors had no clue about how to help me off the drugs although they agree I don't need them.

Hello everyone, I wanna give an update for my condition. So 3 months on cit 20, one last week at 10 and the last last week on 5. Im now 2 months and 9 days off. The last 2 months I had little fever (like temp.37) and feeling sick with the nausea and some pains in body. Emotionally feeling dreadful -I read somewhere that if the physical and emotional symptoms are getting worse at the same time is the withdrawal so I was repeating this to myself every day. I still pass the days on the couch feeling tired and sleepy and my head is like tones. The last few days everything is like fading, you still wake up with nausea and bad thoughts but not so bad as before.I drink more water and at night magnesium. Maybe because its summer and the mood is better. Maybe if it was winter I d feel worse.I start to eat more the last days and Im in better mood. Im afraid to believe its over, so I expect some wave to hit me again.

What I wanted to say the most is how I feel - I feel like I was missing for months...like I was on the moon or better to say in hell since I started the pills in february. I wasnt my self and I knew it, I messed my life and lost my bf for this months..not such a long time but enought to ruin you as maybe many of you know. I ruined my body and my mind. Im 55 kg maybe less, everybody is telling me "You re so slim", I jsut had enough of listening, the only thing I reply is : "Pray to god never to be where I was"...

For the people who worry I wanna say I had A LOT of effects on and off the drug (and still have of course). It will take a page to count them. I still sometimes think about some diseases because Im kind of hypochondriac. But Im so tired that I almost dont care anymore. I lost myself for months, now I feel Im coming back slowly. I realized that being yourself is the best feeling in the world.

I REALLY PRAY THAT THIS NIGHTMARE HAS ITS END FOR ME AND EVERYONE ELSE.

p.s. I forgot to tell the first month feb-march i was taking xanax - side effects too and quickly addictive. So i stopped it.

Walks with friends and conversations help. Music and dance. I know its impossible in some moment but later if you feel you have a little energy DO IT, even if you have headaches. I was taking the dog for a walk with nausea and sweats, thinking OK let it be, I cannot change it, Im so tired I cant fight...

Im 32 single, jobless and I dont see any future in front but at least I got my mind back so this is a big thing for me. I cry every day.

This is my experience so far. Thanks to the people who replied me and who read.

Thank you for the update Laura, I'm so glad you are starting to feel better.  I'm sure you will continue to recover, with perhaps a few waves.  I'm sorry you lost your bf, please don't blame yourself for what these drugs did, none of us knew how harmful they were. You will find a new relationship when you are feeling better.

Not being able to see a positive future is a common effect of withdrawal, but its not true, as you continue to heal, your life will improve, you have a good attitude by accepting your symptoms, and doing what you need to do.

Have a look through our symptoms and self care section, especially the pinned posts at the top.  The threads about magnesium and omega fish oil, have information about these two supplements which many people find helpful:

Do stay in touch and let us know how you are.

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.
