Thiamine Helps Maintain Serotonin Levels

Thiamine is a B-vitamin (B1) that plays many important roles in the body. One of these is to help regulate serotonin levels in the brain. Indeed, thiamine deficiency may significantly impair serotonergic (serotonin-mediated) signaling processes. For example, animal studies suggest that replenishing thiamine in deficient animals reinstates normal serotonin function.

It is not surprising, therefore, that thiamine supplementation has a positive impact on mood in both young and elderly human patients. In one study, healthy elderly women with a marginal thiamine deficiency were monitored for a ten-week period. Following supplementation with thiamine (10 mg/day), the women exhibited improvement in general well-being and decreased fatigue, compared with control subjects.5

Another study involved 120 younger women who did not exhibit any thiamine deficiency.6 Half of them received thiamine (50 mg/day), and half received a placebo. After two months of supplementation, the women in the thiamine group significantly improved their performance on both cognitive and psychological tests that measured mood. These results suggest that thiamine has a beneficial effect on mood even when women are not thiamine-deficient.

As we have seen, several natural agents may help with depression. Two such arethiamine and hyperforin from St. John's wort. Needless to say, 5-HTP and also judicious amounts of vitamin B6, calcium, magnesium, and niacin are believed to nourish neurons properly and support normal serotonergic function.

B6 on a previous try made me very depressed... react badly to Vit D and Magnesium

Maybe if thiamine gets to be ok I can some of these without reactions.. we will see

I have been looking up histamine since I had a drug reaction and have learned B1 increases histamine.  Given that we know antidepressants came from a base drug of antihistamines the fact we have histamine issue post use is not surprising. I wonder if the histamine fluctuates like all other things up and down when we are doing our wave window thing?

Hi, I am in Toronto, Canada. I am starting my journey again, coming off. If there is anyone else in the city that would like to meet for mutual support, I am happy to meet anywhere central on the subway line.

Welcome Gently how is the taper?

Hello Canadians!  I am not Canadian and am not familiar with the health care system there, but we have a new member who is having difficulties with his current doctor, who refuses to renew a script that he badly needs if he is going to prevent severe withdrawal.

It would be nice if you could visit his thread and learn of his situation to see if he can be helped with his health care provider situation.  HIs handle is Nyx:

Started ADs back around 1995 after bad break-up, starting with Prozac.  Switched to Wellbutrin, and then to Effexor in 2002
Effexor XR 2002-2014 up to 225 mg at one point, down to 37.5 mg towards end but back up to 75 mg in 2014; now realize I had W/D as I dropped down, memory very poor about history.  Extreme emotions, poor concentration as I stepped back down, didn't connect the dots!
Summer 2014 reduced to 0 very quickly, was sick of anhedonia/sexual dysfunction due to meds, depression never controlled if not worse. Didn't recognize WD since symptoms built slowly (thought I had ADD! and menopausal on top of it), starting with severe sweats, very bad cog-fog and memory issues, culminating in weight loss, severe anxiety and depression, panic, severe apathy and insomnia by eight months off.  Saw p-doc who put me on Remeron, increased from 7.5 mg/day to 37.5 mg by May 22, 2015; still doing very badly though able to sleep.

June 1. 2015 Reinstated Effexor XR 37.5 mg, Remeron dropped to 30 mg PM. Immediate relief of symptoms, like nothing had ever happened!  Joined SA and began on advice of friend who recognized it was WD all along! Began tapering in July 2015.

Been tapering both meds ever since, focusing on one more than the other or doing no more than 5% of each per month.

12 mg Effexor and 5.8 mg Remeron (mirtazapine SolTabs to make a solution with OraPlus) as of 5/4/2017

Update 3/14/18: 2.9 mg Remeron and 6 mg Effexor; 6/10/18:  2.6 mg Remeron and 4.9 mg Effexor

Hi,

If anybody would like to chat about withdrawal, let me know, and support each other during waves.

Thanks,

2010 started 10 mg celexa, 2011 went up to 20 mg

06/2014 started tapering (20 mg,10 mg alternate days)

19/09/2014 crashed at 10 mg

20/09/2014 updosed to 20 mg to try and stabilize- Never stabilized and CNS basically plummeted

August 31 2015- Started my 5% taper anyways

May 3 2016- At 14 mg the tapering caught up with me- Withdrawal included severe anxiety, feeling like im on speed, suicidal and homicidal ideation, akathesia, feeling like I was on heroin, memory loss, PGAD, feeling like I was on an acid

May 4 2016- Updosed to 15.5 mg to try and stabilize

June 4- Started taking 2 mg 5 times a day which adds up to 10 mg because of akathesia when taking my full dose. Akathesia symtpoms smaller

July 27th- Dropped from 15.5 mg to 10 mg because could no longer tolerate taking drug- bad side effects mainly akathesia and emotional deadness.

Oct 11- Improved a lot since May 4th after my crash. Withdrawal symptoms still left- DR/DP, emotional anasthesia, akathesia, tingling in head, feeling like my body and face disappears, messed up sound interpretation, perception and difficulty reading social and emotional cues during DR/DP, apathy, inability to tell if I am in dream or reality, disturbed sleep. Started having few windows

I'm in the Toronto area.

Our drug patent expiry dates are after, sometimes years after, the patent expiry in the US, so I thought I'd post this link to Health Canada's Drug Patent Register.  It's a fast way to find out the earliest date that generic versions of drugs could be available here.

Health Canada Patent Register link: http://pr-rdb.hc-sc.gc.ca/pr-rdb/index-eng.jsp

Clicking on the patent # in the search results will bring up the details, when the patent was awarded and when it expires.

Vancouver BC here :)

SSRIs left me anhedonic, depersonalized, apathetic, and I am pretty sure it messed up my immune system/stomach.. I have Crohns and CFS symptoms ever since I came off of meds a few years ago.

Now and I am on and off every few months, trying meds again, then deciding not too, and feeling stuck in the middle..

Anyways, Hello Everyone!

Welcome Mike I see you don't have a drug history posted yet... it is important as that is how we see each other here.. initially once you have been around here years and years you get a feel for what a person might be in this process by looking at the signature that contains drug history.

Going on and off drug is bad for your brain I cannot offer much more than that till I know your history.  I too have CFS was dx years and years ago.. drugs suck.. fallout sucks just as much if not more.

Welcome and peace

Checking in...Outside of Toronto.

May 12th 2016 took last bead of effexor. 8 month taper.  Bridge = prozac 5mg, 300mg Lithium

May 31st took last of prozac. Lithium 300 mg, estrogen patch 150, magnesium.

June 14th reinstated 1mg Prozac due to intolerable emotional distress. Cont with lithium 300mg, 150 magnesium, re added omega 3, cont estrogen patch. June 15-july 5th had marked improvement of emotional wd symptoms, likely due to the reinstatement. July 5th intense emotional symptoms returned.

July 15 decreased 50 mg of lithium to see if it improved low heart rate.

July 19th - increased prozac to 1.5mg.

July 22 marked improvement of emotional symptoms...again, likely due to increase of prozac. However sudden agitation developed so decreased back down to 1.25mg prozac. Realizing increasing dose is dangerous because of these adverse effects and also seeing that wave is inevitable regardless of reinstatement.

Continuing 250 lithium, 1.25mg prozac, estrogen.

Oct 31st - continued 250 lithium, 1 mg prozac, estrogen patch.

Jan 2018  - off of prozac (bridge) as of Dec 2017.  Starting to taper Lithium 250 mg.  Will do 10% per month.

May 2018 - lithium 115mg.  Still having waves but they aren’t as bad.  However, I really struggle with emotional symptoms about 1 week after a cut.  Even this past micro taper of 1.5% was tough.  That was after holding for a month.

dec 2018- 80mg lithium.  Tapering 1 mg per week since last June.  Symptoms improving overall but still very sensitive to light, sound, social stimulation and I cry a lot.

March 2019 - 65 mg lithium.  Still tapering 1mg per week.

Canadian Author who has MCS - multiple chemical sensitivities

(More about MCS and its many names start here: http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/6175-limbic-kindling-hardwiring-the-brain-for-hypersensitivity/)

I do not know if she took drugs or how she came about to have MCS a list of here books and this is on her site.

A brief biography is available on this site, as well as selected works.

In addition to writing, Varda continues to work as an environmental health policy consultant. See http://paradigmconsultants.ca

In case any of you have need of her services this is from her site

As well, Paradigm offers unique depth of expertise in the emerging area of chronic, co-morbid environmentally-linked illnesses, such as environmental or multiple chemical sensitivities (ES/MCS), myalgic encephalomyelitis – chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) – and fibromyalgia syndrome (FM). These serious, disabling conditions affect more than 1.4 million Canadians and their families and communities, and more than 11 million Americans. They’re linked to the proliferation of hazardous everyday chemicals and have been spreading at a rapid pace — we saw an average cross-condition jump in incidence of 25 per cent between 2005 and 2010 in Canada, with ES/MCS climbing at a whopping 34 percent.

If your organization has needs in the developing field of environmental health, please visit our services page and see if we can assist you to meet the challenges ahead.

She has a job... here

In May 2012 Varda was hired by the Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Association of Ontario (MEAO)

"In 2005, according to Statistics Canada’s Canadian Community Health survey 1,135,000 Canadians had been diagnosed with one or more of ES/MCS (Environmental Sensitivities/Multiple Chemical Sensitivities), Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and Fibromyalgia (FM). By 2010 this number jumped to 1,415,000. Though Canada’s population grew by only 7%, these conditions increased by an average of 25%."

Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

I wanted to see in what formulations a drug was available in Canada. I found this:  Health Canada's Drug Product Data Base

Also Health Canada's MedEffect Canada for reports of adverse effects of prescription drugs: Consumer Reporting options, includes online reporting link as well as phone, fax and mailing options.

Ya try using it... when I last tried the links went in a feedback loop to previous pages... completely useless.

It took several calls emails and complaints I checked the site again after and it was exactly the same as it was before my troubles. I was going to add a different drug... it took about 2wks of phone calls emails and then a lady had to plug my info into the system from over the phone it never did work..next time I tried same story...

I caved and did not use it again.

Has anyone else read Jan Wong's book, Out of the Blue, about her depression and anxiety, brought on by vicious email harassment by members of the public/readers in response to an article she wrote and subsequent complete abdication of support by her employer at the time, The Globe and Mail?  She doesn't write about any withdrawal problems, maybe she's in the lucky proportion that have few effects or a smart pDoc who tapers slowly.

I found it interesting that her psychiatrist supported what she calls "geographic cures" (e.g. travel & vacations) during her period of disability. After I reported feeling much better after a vacation, my psychiatrist said, "If I could prescribe vacations, I would. So many of my patients find it helpful."  Of course employers and insurers would and do fight that tooth and nail.

Makes me think I'll be living frugally -- far below take-home pay -- and negotiating more vacation time, so that I can afford to take mental health weeks and fortnights more regularly.

Is anybody in Vancouver who would like to be friends or phone friends?
