☼ joy2730: withdrawing from citalopram, quetiapine

Update  I am still doing well on 15mg citalopram, my mind is clearer than it has been in years, I didn't know I was so bright and that my memory is actually really good.

You don't know the damage a drug has been doing until you stop or reduce the dose.

If anyone is nervous about reducing I would say that doing it slowly gives you some level of protection against withdrawal and/or return of original symptoms for which the drug was prescribed originally.

Take care all

That's great,

2000 - sertraline for job anxiety low confidence (17 years old) ..which turned the next 16 years into nightmare!

On/off sertraline severe withdrawals every time. 2014 - felt better as reduced dose of sertraline no more inner restlessness. Doctor rushed off again. Hit severe withdrawal. Lost the little I had in life. Couldn't get stable again on 12.5mg. Was switched to prozac. Had severe reaction to prozac..came off in November 2015 at 6mg as felt more confused and damaged on it..Even more withdrawal ..rage, depression, dyphoria, near constant suicidal ideation, self harm impulses, doom, concrete block in head, unable to do much of anything with this feeling in head..went back on 6mg of sertraline to see if would alleviate anything. It didn't..reduced from December to June 2016 came off at 2.5mg sertraline as was hospitalised for the severe rage, suicidal impulses, and put on 50mg lofepramine which in 2nd week reduced all symptoms but gave insomnia which still have..psych stopped lofepramine cold turkey..no increased withdrawal symptoms new symptoms from lofepramine except persistant insomnia which has as side effect.

Taking Ativan for 8 months for the severe rage self harm impulses 1-3 times a week (mostly 2 times a week) at .5mg. Two months (I'm unsure exactly when the interdose started to happen) ago interdose withdrawal seemed to happen..2 days I think after the Ativan.

Nightmare that could have been avoided!

Still doing well on 15mg citalopram, just the odd head zap, which I think is good because it shows some progress, some changes are taking place.

I started to reduce citalopram from 30 mg last August, I am trying to ignore my exceedingly slow progress, but at least there is some progress.

My GP left a message with my husband two nights ago to ask how I was doing, which is good in a way, but also sad that I haven't rung her back, I just don't feel she was right to keep me on this indefinitely, everyone should be encouraged to at least try to reduce if they so wish.

Take care all

I totally agree about doctors checking in with pts about how long  they’ve been on the drug. I got passed around from one doctor to the next, and they just kept refilling my prescription, never even mentioned the idea that I might stop taking it. If I hadn’t decided on it myself, I’m sure they would have just left me on for the rest of my life.

As for getting down below 10mg, I’m down to .75 and trying to stabilize (having a little trouble lately), but have been below five for five months and doing reasonably well. Maybe I’ll have my own point below which I can’t seem to go, though. Hope that's encouraging. It's possible!

Have taken Celexa 10mg for six years. Tried to taper two years ago but failed. I have taken 25mg hydrocholorothiazide for two years for slightly high blood pressure. Not sure if it's related to SSRI use. I don't have a family history of hypertension, am a healthy weight, walk all

day at my job, and work out (powerlifting and kettlebells).

I tapered by 10% (always indexed to original dose; big mistake!) for ten months starting in March 2014, crashed hard at 1/2 milligrams, have updosed to 5mg and am trying to hold there.

sorry, 1.5mg, not .75. The latter is the ml I take of the liquid, which works out to 1.5mg

Thanks for that it is very encouraging.  Has anyone on this site tried 5 htp as a means of aiding withdrawal symptoms, I have been reading of some success with this.  Apparently 50 mg or 100 mg is the usual dose, with people experiencing a lot more side effects on higher doses than that.

~Some are also using it instead of a conventional antidepressant and apparently there are no withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking it.  It is also meant to help with sleep and mood, I am in 2 minds about it.

i can't remember everything i've read about 5Htp, but I know there is a good amount on this site somewhere. I think Alto may have cautioned against its use because as it seems to achieve the same thing as the ssri but by a different means: providing more serotonin rather than inhibiting its re-uptake. The upshot is it may prevent the reestablishing of equilibrium and healing.

Having been good on 15mg citalopram I thought I would try to reduce again, by chipping off a very very slight amount, but two days afterwards started to get all the old symptoms back again, recognised them and have gone back to 15mg very quickly because I had actually started to be sick again.

So stuck again!

Hi Joy

You are doing so well - it's only a minor setback. At least you recognised the 'signs'  and took appropriate action.

I am following your posts as so want to start reducing Cit once I stabilise.

Best Wishes

Hi all

I am now taking 14.5 mg citalopram by making up my liquid again and my mind and body are coping better with this than when I was just chipping bits of tablet off.

I don't like using liquid as sometimes when I draw it back up it looks much weaker than others, but so far so good.

On the sexual side of things my libido is increased, but that is not my priority, my priority is my cognitive functioning.  Take care everyone.

I am chipping away at my pills and am now taking 13.5mg citalopram.  I have a slight feeling of nausea and had a bit of a headache last night, but am doing well.  Had a very sweaty few hrs when sweat literally ran down my back, but quite bearable really.

It seems to be progress.

Quick catch up, I am doing much better now, all symptoms have cleared up and somehow have managed to get down to 12.5mg citalopram now.  The above mentioned symptoms only really lasted a day or so, and now I feel really well.  I am so glad I am on this journey, thank you Flowers, and just to reassure everyone, yes I am doing well.

Thank you for checking in Joy, it's great to see that you are doing so well. Citalopram is available in liquid form on prescription which would be much easier for you. I believe it isn't any more expensive than the tablets either so your gp wouldn't have an excuse not to prescribe it for you ;)  I'm adding our 'here comes the sun' symbol to your title to show that you are doing well.

**I am not a medical professional, if in doubt please consult a doctor with withdrawal knowledge.

Had a huge spell of dizziness this afternoon, so bad I had to lie down and the room actually spun round, also have the type of headache that I associate with withdrawal and a bit of a flat mood today, but I am going to stick with it as on the whole I feel so much better.  I will keep you posted as to how long this takes to resolve. :)

Thank you flowers.  I took 2 nurofen last night and had a good night's sleep.  I feel a lot better today, no dizziness and the headache has gone, just a little bit of nausea now, but feeling well and truly alive in myself.  It hasn't kept me off work and my work is quite demanding, so that is good.  It looks like it is a 24 hr of feeling rotten and then a day until back to normal, which is perfectly doable.

Thanks for your support flowers.  I will not be dropping the dose again for a considerable length of time though.  On reflection it has taken me 11 mths to reduce from 30 mg to 12.5, how slow is that, but very worth it!

Just want to add that today I feel better than ever, so can only conclude I am over the withdrawal symptoms completely and am now down to 12.5 mg on a permanent basis.

Take heart again, the withdrawal symptoms can be short lived.

Just to let you know I think I have got down to 10mg almost by accident.  I dropped some of a pill, bits really down the toilet and had to manage without as I was working away from home and found I didn't miss the extra 2.5 mg of bits.

It has only been 2 days now but I am interested to see where this is going and feel even better, much more awake and full of life.  It is looking good but I am wary and for the next few days will carry plenty of bits of pills around with me just in case I get a sudden onset of w/d symptoms.

I will keep you all posted.  Never loose patience with this.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a quick update, I am doing really well on 10 mg citalopram now, occasionally I get a bad nightmare, which I feel is my brain waking up more, but feeling so much better and ALIVE.  However, I have gathered in my research that the lower doses are harder to come off than the initial dosages so I am planning on staying on 10mg for ages, and then I will be making my liquid again.  I know people have replied that I should be able to get liquid citalopram quite easily from my GP, but my practice has not been willing to do this so far, but if I have a lot of difficulties with making my own I will contact them again and discuss it at length.

My husband is having to reduce his tramadol, has anyone got any ideas on speed of that, he is on 50mg 3x daily at present and his GP has told him there isn't a problem coming off it, but judging by  this website that is not necessarily the case.

Take good care everyone, and if you get a setback don't let it stop you from making progress in the future, it doesn't mean it cant be done

Good to hear you're doing well, joy.

Your husband should reduce Tramadol in the same way, by 10% at a time, calculated on the last dosage. Since he's taking it 3 times a day, he may wish to reduce each dose by 10% -- that would be, overall, a 10% reduction on the day's dosage.

I would like to share this and see what others think.  I don't normally drink alcohol due to my work commitments but have just had 1 week off as a/l and on Wed night decided to have some wine which turned into 3 large glasses.  In the middle of the night I got head zaps again and felt alternatively cold and hot, it was as if there was a return of withdrawal symptoms although I had felt I was doing fine on 10mg citalopram.  Now things are settling again.

I am beginning to think that when the alcohol hit my brain my brain was sensitive due to the withdrawal process and the sudden alcohol really upset it.  Perhaps during withdrawal we should all monitor our alcohol intake or avoid a sudden increase?

Hi Joy!

I read your thread avidly as it give's me the  confidence to go down the long road of tapering which I plan to start in September. I can't wait really, especially to feel more clear headed and alive!

I had a very small sip of a sparkling wine to toast someone's birthday recently and felt so awful just after one sip!! Since WD I have got out of the habit of drinking alcohol which I think is a good thing really. I probably shouldn't have been drinking in the first place taking the AD'S!!!

Hope you continue to do well.

Today in the course of my work I have observed first hand how these antidepressants can seriously affect personality.  A client of mine is a 89 yr old lady who has been suffering panic attacks.  Three weeks ago she went to GP and came out with script for sertraline 50 mg to take 1/2 for  a week and then on to full dose.

This morning she could hardly string two words together, whereas she normally completes high level crossword, her cognition was poor and her personality squashed.  however she recognised what was happening and is going to take only the 1/2 dose tomorrow, but how dangerous as she lives on her own.

Note for flowers, don't be afraid, reducing is a positive journey of rediscovering yourself, and if it isn't at least you have given yourself the chance to find out.  Some people may be wise to stay on their meds, it is personal choice, but worth a go.

We need our brains functioning properly to be able to assess psychiatric meds, but yet these meds reduce brain functioning, it is only when you reduce or stop you realise you have been functioning DESPITE the meds rather than because of them.  Or it may be different, but that is the way it has been for me.

Poor old soul. How frightening for her and shame on the Dr for giving her them when she is living alone.

Thanks for the encouragement regarding my planned taper Joy. I t's something I want to do and know I have to do it because of side effects I am having. I have been drug free for a lot of my life so hopefully will be able to function without them again one day.

Update, yesterday I was so busy I didn't take my citalopram 10 mg til 4pm and hadn't noticed any ill effects, whereas previously I would feel ill about 3 pm (I normally take it about 6.30 am), so I chipped a bit of my 10mg pill off, just a tiny bit and have continued with that today and so far I feel fine, even fact, really well, and I slept really well too.

I have had one weird symptom, as if a fluid was draining from the top of my head to my neck, really weird.  Could just be my imagination leaking, at least that is what it felt like.

I will report back saying whether it is easy to chip down from 10mg or not!

Further update:

Saw my elderly lady today who was very asleep on 50mg of sertraline, she has of her own volition cut down to just under 1/2 pill of sertraline and says she feels a lot more awake, and she looks a lot better too.  Flowers, you were interested in her.  So at 89 years of age she has managed to work it out of her own, I really hope I am as capable of that when/if I get to 89.

So pleased your old lady is doing OK and how marvellous to be her age and still have her marbles!

Pugknows wrote on someone's thread that we maybe have to go through the horrors of WD and what the drugs have done to us so that we can help and guide others who have been prescribed them. Thank goodness you were around to see what was going on with your old lady.

Having had a few days on a bit less than 10mg the sickness and headaches started again, and a new symptom, stiffness on either side of the neck, so I have temporarily increased the dose back to 10mg and will take a few days to try to work things out.

My GP told me I would perhaps only manage to get down to 10mg but it shouldn't be impossible but perhaps it just gets harder from now on, has anyone got any thoughts on this.

So it is experience of reducing from 10 mg citalopram?

Quick update, I have been having a sicky, headache, insomnia time and so have decided to stick at 10mg for a while.  My GP rang me out of the blue to see how I was doing on Monday and she told me that after a dose reduction it takes 4 weeks for your body to notice it.  I asked for liquid citalopram but she wasn't having any of that.  We had a frank discussion when I told her I was less than impressed with her and she congratulated me on all the progress I was making and said that in future patients are going to get more reviews and help.

Take care everyone.
