☼ HikingAlong: Going off Wellbutrin

HikingAlong

Recommended Posts

I'm rating my symptoms and trying to decide when to make a reduction. I switched from Wellbutrin extended release to immediate release, same dose, and had quite a few increased symptoms for a few weeks (suicidality, headaches, sleep disturbance, low mood). Now I'm wondering how I decide I'm stable enough to try a small, like 3% cut. I'm only a little suicidal, no headaches, still sleep disturbance and low mood. But, I wasn't all that stable when I started, so... I may never get to a more stable place... When is stable enough?

Welcome, HikingAlong. I moved your post here to start your Intro topic, as discussion is likely to be particular to your situation.

How much Wellbutrin are you taking? Now that you're taking immediate-release, are you taking it more than once a day?

What has your taper process been? How have your symptoms changed?

Hi Alto,

I was on 300 mg XL. now on 300 mg immediate release. I'm taking it 75 mg 4x a day, with my tramadol so I don't have to figure out more times to take stuff.

Back in 2000-2002 I stopped Wellbutrin... it took me about 18 months, going very slowly. I had no idea this was a "thing." I just got super depressed when I tried to go quickly. I'm trying to be more educated this time. (When I was off all psych drugs from 2003-2008, I was so capable and effective. I got **** done, and I wasn't in therapy.)

I've been on the immediate release for 5 weeks. Yesterday I was in a funky depression, but today's been okay. I've started trying to correct my self-talk. When I say, "I'm getting depressed," I correct it to, "I'm withdrawing."

Oh, and I picked up a free book at the library... photos of kittens. That's for self soothing.

: )

WD symptoms: I'm having more suicidal thoughts, more crying spells, more feeling hopeless and depressed. At first I had headaches and very poor sleep. And that's all just from switching to immediate release. I haven't felt stable enough to make a cut.

I downloaded the t2 mood tracker app to my phone, which is kind of fun.

I've been reading a lot on the forums, but it's overwhelming. TMI. I looked at a paper on tapering somewhere here, Serotonin Transporter Occupancy blah blah blah,  that had graphs showing how the neuronal transport function changes so slowly until you get to a pretty low dose, then WHAM! All at once. That freaked me out.

Like everyone here, I just want my old brain, my old feelings back. I want to go as quickly as possible, but I see the danger in that and I have experience that tells me it won't work. Oh, and I'm reading "Anatomy of an Epidemic," so that's pissing me off.

I'm glad that I found out about these forums.

Hi everyone. I've finished tapering my AD and Neurontin(Gabapentin) and I'm ready to tackle Tramadol. But I'm scared. So I'm going to go really really slowly. My pain doc wants me to use a Butrans (buprenorphen 5mcg) patch to support my withdrawal. She says it will be easier to quit than tramadol. Any opinions on that?

Please do a google search on the Butrans before you consider taking it.  This is a highly addictive medication that plays badly with just about everything and causes a huge list of health problems.  By starting this you will just be adding another drug that must be slowly and carefully tapered of an extended time period.  From what I have read it is not worth the risks.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

I'm not going to use the Butrans patch. I really don't understand why doctors keep trying to get me to add a medicine when I tell them I want to subtract one?

Anyhoo. Does anyone know the manufacturer of the Tramadol Liquid? My pharmacist can't find it. I know I can make my own solution/suspension, but... it'd be nice to have someone else do that for once.

If I can't get the liquid, I'll just dissolve 50 mg pills in 50 ml of water, draw off 5%, see how I do. I'm glad I read the info on Tramadol. Now I understand why I need to keep each of my three daily doses the same.

I was able to get down from 8  50 mg pills to 3 a couple years ago, but these last three .... when I try to taper, my pain rears up.

Any tips are welcome

Fantastic link! Thanks!

I see it's a UK drug. When I click on US version, there are no drops. I will bring it up with my doc and pharmacist.

I started tapering the tramadol with a 4% cut 12 days ago. (1 cc from 25 ccs). Not sleeping. Really not sleeping. Some nights it feels like I get no sleep at all, some nights I get a couple hours and then toss and turn. And then get up and tidy things.

But my pain is not worse, so that's good.

Titled:  Finally off all of it!

Hi everyone,

I want to express my gratitude for this website. I started here in August 2014, tapering slowly off several drugs that included antidepressants and pain meds. I wanted to be done with them all right away, but... every time I tapered quickly, I started having suicidal thoughts. So, I've tapered very slowly. And, as of this week, I am off everything! Everything! 5 1/2 years of tapering, stabilizing, tapering, learning, stabilizing...  it's been a constant concern. And now it's done.

Thanks for all the support, and for those who are just starting---it may take a long time, but, that time will pass whether you work on this or not. So get going!

Questions and Answers.....

Human Charger earlights look like a little iPod, but deliver bright light to your brain through your ears. I find they work better than a therapy light or light visor, though I did love my FeelBright Light visor. They think the light photons bounce around in your cerobrospinal fluid. When they hit some special molecule, they change it to something better for you.

Most of my tapering was just very slow and methodical. I had hoped to be completely off everything in two years, but it was close to 6.

I watched for symptoms (thinking of death, low energy) and slowed or paused my taper whenever I needed to. When I got down to that last Tramadol, I did kick up the speed a bit and it worked out okay.

I started using microdoses of psilocybin a few years ago, not methodically, just pretty randomly.

I've done two high dose therapeutic sessions this year. One by myself, one with a guide. Neither legal. The Michael Pollan book, Change Your Mind, emboldened me. In the chapter about psilocybin and your brain, he talks about depression as a rigidity of thinking. The psilocybin releases that rigidity and allows for more flexibility.

I'm doing really well! And I'm grateful for this forum. I don't know how I could have tapered without it, and without the help I specifically got from Rhi.

Wow, it's been a long time since I've posted. In March of 2020, I was able to take enough psilocybin mushrooms to get lift off, and it changed my life completely. I now know that my brain become better connected and more flexible. My depression disappeared and it hasn't returned.

The next year, I got involved in legalizing psilocybin in Oregon. Then in 2023, with my partner, I opened a psilocybin service center, Vital Reset, in Hood River, Oregon. As of today, we've helped over 100 people have psilocybin experiences. Probably half are seeking relief from depression. Of those, almost all get meaningful relief. Of those who don't, all are on antidepressants, usually SSRIs. We are working to figure out how to get that group to find healing.

If you want to try psilocybin for your depression... get in touch! It's real. It doesn't help everyone, but the research shows that about 75% of people in research studies get meaningful relief from depression.
