Cherry, so sorry you've had an increase in symptoms. Yes, it WILL all come to an end some day. That is just another "normal" aspect to withdrawal, though--feeling that it will not come to an end! (Sigh)

Zoloft 100 mg. daily for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome since Oct. 1994 / Synthroid 88 mcg. daily / Supplements: Neptune Krill Oil-1,000 mg. twice daily/Astaxanthin 10 mg. twice daily/Ubiquinol 100 mg. twice daily (These 3 have allowed me to discontinue (approved by doctor) bp meds I was on. Calcium Citrate 500 mg. daily/Vitamin D3 2,400 iu daily/K2 (MK7) 100 mcg daily (osteopenia and fam. hist. of severe osteoporosis). Stress B Complex (1/2 dose)/Quercetin (for allergies/asthma)/Magnesium (400 mg. oral glycinate and about 50 mg. magnesium chloride spray oil a day, divided throughout day).

Tapered Zoloft about 6 wks. Totally off since the end of July (25-29, 2014). 3 wks. vertigo at end of taper, then 3-4 wks. OK, followed by withdrawal symptoms increasing in severity (nausea, gastric disturbances, loss of appetite, insomnia, restlessness, jitters, anxiety, agitation--jumping out of my skin--possible akathisia?) Seem to have paradoxical reactions to everything new, even Vitamin C. Severity of akathisia comes and goes, but is constant to some degree. Hard to leave house, and cannot be home alone. (Retired)

Hello knit...

I've been away from this site for so long!  Just saying hi on here :)

*I'm not a doctor and don't give medical advice, just personal experience
**Off all meds since Nov. 2014. Mentally & emotionally recovered; physically not
-Dual cold turkeys off TCA & Ativan in Oct 2014. Prescribed from 2011-2014

-All meds were Rxed off-label for an autoimmune illness.  It was a MISDIAGNOSIS, but I did not find out until AFTER meds caused damage.  All med tapers/cold turkeys directed by doctors

-Nortriptyline May 2012 - Dec 2013. Cold turkey off nortrip & cold switched to desipramine

-Desipramine Jan 2014 - Oct. 29, 2014 (rapid taper/cold turkey)

-Lorazepam 1 mg per night during 2011
-Lorazepam 1 mg per month in 2012 (or less)

-Lorazepam on & off, Dec 2013 through Aug 2014. Didn't exceed 3x a week

-Lorazepam again in Oct. 2014 to help get off of desipramine. Last dose lzpam was 1 mg, Nov. 2, 2014. Immediate paradoxical reactions to benzos after stopping TCAs

-First muscle/dystonia side effects started on nortriptyline, but docs too stupid to figure it out. On desipramine, muscle tremors & rigidity worsened

-Two weeks after I got off all meds, I developed full-blown TD.  Tardive dystonia, dyskinesia, myoclonic jerks ALL over body, ribcage wiggles, facial tics, twitching tongue & fingers, tremors/twitches of arms, legs, cognitive impairment, throat muscles semi-paralyzed & unable to swallow solid food, brain zaps, ears ring, dizzy, everything looks too far away, insomnia, numbness & electric shocks everywhere when I try to fall asleep, jerk awake from sleep with big, gasping breaths, wake with terrors & tremors, severely depressed.  NO HISTORY OF DEPRESSION, EVER. Meds CREATED it.

-Month 7: hair falling out; no vision improvement; still tardive dystonia; facial & tongue tics returned
-Month 8: back to acute, incl. Grand Mal seizure-like episodes. New mental torment, PGAD, worse insomnia
-Month 9: tardive dystonia worse, dyskinesia returned. Unable to breathe well due to dystonia in stomach, chest, throat
-Month 13: Back to acute, brain zaps back, developed eczema & stomach problems. Left leg no longer works right due to dystonia, meaning both legs now damaged
-7 years off: Huge improvements, incl. improved dystonia

So sorry you're having a rough time, DS. I had 3 "decent" days about 5 days before Thanksgiving, but the most of a "break" I've been able to get since then has been a few hours here and there. I did manage to make a few items towards Christmas dinner, but not really sure how I managed it. I've really been in the trenches since! Praying we both get a break soon!!

Luv2knit,

This has been a long time for you to be suffering. Is it one and half years? I noticed you hurt you hand and had a problem with your leg. I think these medications mess with our muscles/tendons making them stiff and prone to damage. Who would have thought of all the ramifications of taking these drugs. It's outrageously appalling to say the least.

The way you reached for the door and pulled something reminded me of this. I tore my achilles tendons several months ago (lot of tiny tears the doctor said) by simply walking. I have always walked 2-3 miles a day for exercise and weight control so it wasn't anything unusual. This is putting a cramp literally in my walking routine. Now I limp along. I keep getting fatter and fatter every day.

My wonderful drug fattens me up.

I hope you are having a good day today.

Lol... Thanks for stopping by Leahy! It has been 17.5 months. It looks like 2-3 years is not uncommon--especially for a rapid taper--and with me being on 20 years, I think that just potentially increases my recovery time!

The "injuries" have been relatively short-lived, but I have had several incidents of just moving the wrong way and not being able to move a body part for a few days!

The thing I would most like to see GO at this point is the akathisia!

It is incredible to me that you would suffer from akathisia this long! Gosh, how could an innocent human being foresee the long reaching arm of AD wd we would have to deal with on a daily/hourly basis coming off psychoactive medications. Sometimes I wonder why we suffer so long tapering slowly. You have made the reason for tapering slowly extremely clear to me. I'm sorry you've had to suffer like this.

I had made a plan to have dinner with two of my cousins/friends tonight who I haven't seen for a while. When they called asking if I was ready for tonight, I said yes. I don't like to be that person who flakes out of things. Then the hour was moved up even later (ahem to 5:30). This threw me into an anxiety situation worrying about going out. I agreed even though I feel terrible today!

By the hour I feel worse. This is typical. I made a very small cut last night and today I woke with that ominous queasiness - nauseous, headache. I need to put my pjs on and go to bed/sleep early to recuperate.

It sucks that we can't have a normal life for such an extended period of time. I guess I need to lower my expectations.

Oh and btw, I was reading about your experience with Seriphos. I was taking that for a while when my cortisol surges were out of control. The directions said to take it for a month or so then stop for a while. I'm not sure if it helped or not. What do you think about Seriphos now?

Leahy, I can't touch ANYTHING now that I wasn't already on prior to withdrawal. I have paradoxical reactions to everything. The Seriphos was just the start of my realizing that. I was already taking 400 mg. of oral magnesium, and had wanted to add 200 mg. more in mag. oil for a total of 600 mg. daily mag. Thought I was on track with increasing that when my sprayer went haywire, and I got a little too much for a few days. I suffered with total insomnia and increased akathisia with SI for days, and had to go back and start back using a dropper. I get one drop extra and I know it, and I still haven't been able to get up to even 500 mg. total. Finally got it through my head that all supplements are off limits for me. Even chamomile tea causes me issues. Hope everything works out for you!

This is exactly how I was vit D mag both off my list of things to take ...only very small touches of mag now and a bit of taurine here and there. I wonder how common it is to be this reactive as I know not everybody here has this issue. This also has not changed for me in 8 years... still can't do mag full force or vit D.

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

btdt--Not sure how common it is, but I know it does happen. Some can even tolerate only a limited number of foods (Wildflower). It seems to be very difficult getting people to understand this however. I'm guessing this would be less likely if one had done a reasonable taper, which I did not!!

Thanks, Ali! Hanging in there! Been kind of rough since Christmas.

Hi Luv. It's rough for sure. Trying to encourage & edge people on.  It's " tough" , at times, when you're stuggling !

Many SSRI's and SSNRI's over 20 years. Zoloft for 7 years followed by Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Celexa, Pristiq, Valdoxan, Mianserin and more - on and off. No tapering. Cold turkey off Valdoxan - end of May 2014

Haven't been on in FOREVER!  Looks like things have changed a lot!  Thought while I was on, I would post an update.  Still suffering from akathisia at 34 months off, but continue to see improvements in the intensity of it.  I've never had what I would call "windows and waves", but rather just gradual (very SLOW) improvement.  I would say my baseline now is probably about 50% better than it was in the beginning.   Hope everyone is seeing much improvement!

OK, followed by withdrawal symptoms increasing in severity (nausea, gastric disturbances, loss of appetite, insomnia, restlessness, jitters, anxiety, agitation--jumping out of my skin--possible akathisia?) windows could start any day... and btw I can now take mag.. natural calm I teaspoon per day I recently added mag bis glycinate 200... not sure if it is a good idea or not.. so it is a good idea to try things every once in a while to see if you can tolerate them... mag is always recommended on here but personally I can't get thru a day without B1 and vitamin C... mag came later.

B1 I got initially from bran sticks... that is how I sorted out that I needed it so if you want to try something safe that would be the way to go... for mag natural calm became ok for me after a long time of not being able to tolerate it.

Glad things are improving peace to you.

Thanks, btdt!  I had a regimen of supplements I was already on prior to withdrawal for pre-existing conditions.  Fortunately I have been able to continue taking them.  Among those were magnesium (glycinate) and a B Complex, as well as Krill Oil.  Being nervous about the B Complex, I cut it in half, but have done fine with this.  I wanted to add to the magnesium, but was extremely sensitive, so over a period of time, I have added magnesium "spray" oil--drop by drop--until I have gotten where I want to be.  I am taking 400 mg. daily of the glycinate and approx. 200 of the topical, and my mag. RBC level is close to the middle of the range.  Not quite optimum, but when it was checked, I had not quite arrived at the 200 on the topical.  If I miss my supplements on any given day, I know it!  (Although I currently don't seem to have quite as much reaction as I once did.). This makes me think I am getting benefit from what I am taking, and also perhaps that I am not quite as sensitive to changes.  Thanks for your input!!

Thanks for your response, DS.  If I remember right, we have been off right around the same amount of time!  Hopefully we will both be seeing more rapid improvement at this point!!  I've been frequenting Facebook groups, and finding there are many who are still improving in our time frame!

Luv2knit,

How are you doing?

Prozac 1999-2009 quit semi cold turkey.

2012 Placed on Seroquel 25 mg, Tranxene (Clorezepate) 3.75 mg 3x a day, Remeron 30 mg for anxiety/akathesia.

Weaned off Seroquel and Tranxene .to Remeron 15 Mg.

In May 2014 tried quitting Remeron at its lowest dose. Had severe withdrawals.Reinstated Remeron at 30 mg by doctor. August 5 2014 entered hospital. Doctor pulled the Remeron and bridged it to Pamelor (Nortriptyline) 40mg and Zyprexa 2.5mg.After removing the Remeron all my bad symptoms went away and I am stable.

9/11/14 - 7.5 mg tranxene, 40mg Pamelor, Zyprexa 2.5mg

12/29/14 -  20mg Pamelor, 1/6/15,  7/31/15 3.5mg, 8/10/15 3.2 mg, 9/15/15 2.2mg, 10/15/15 1.8mg

Hey, Chicken!  Thanks for asking.  Still hanging in there.  Four years off my rapid (6-week) taper of Zoloft, and still having 24/7 akathisia and other symptoms.  Many things are better or gone, and overall the intensity of the akathisia is somewhat better as well, but my bad days still outnumber the "better" days unfortunately.  Looking at where I was, though, I have come a really long way, and I'm thankful for that!!

Hi luv2knit,

Im so sorry to hear that you’ve still got akathisia after such a long time. I just read your intro and what a quick taper after being on Zoloft for such a long time. It’s sad you’ve still got withdrawals but you sound like you’ve got a positive attitude.

I get akathisia too if I taper too quickly. I’ve also got CFS. I’ve had it for about 23 years. It’s a debilitating illness but I’d take it over withdrawals anytime.

Im so glad that you can see the positives and the things to be thankful for.

Sending hugs🤗

Thanks, Carmie!  Yeah, I really knew nothing about withdrawal, and it was a really rapid taper!

I try to have a positive attitude.  Sometimes it is hard!  I spent a lot of time on Facebook.  I was actually an admin. in a large Benzo/Antidepressant withdrawal group for about two years, and was asked to be a moderator in a other group, but it was getting to be too much for me, and in the end, I "unfollowed" all the groups and just check in from time to time.

I agree that I would take the CFS over withdrawals! Were you also prescribed the AD for your CFS?

Hope you are doing well!

Hi again,

No, I was prescribed meds for chronic pain, which I don’t have anymore. It was a downhill spiral from there. Just read my signature or first post. I was put on n off meds n cold turkeyed. I was in a psych ward a few times because of the akathisia etc from withdrawals from being cold turkeyed.

At the time though I didn’t know it was the meds that we’re causing all the problems. I thought there was something terribly wrong with me but there wasn’t. The things doctors n pharmaceutical companies put us through, hey.

Im positive by nature n do my best just to take a day at a time n keep distracting myself when I’m in waves. I haven’t tapered for months as I needed a break to do lots of fun things n have happy memories to look back on. I’m going on holiday to the n

beach next week but at the end of the month I’m tapering again.

My motto is make happy memories in windows and distract yourself in waves.

Sending hugs your way🤗

Thanks for that Luv2knit,

I appreciate it, but I just got rid of Facebook last week. I’ve been stuck in bed most of the day so far but I’m in good spirits. Thought I’d come on this site this morning as I haven’t checked in much because of severe brain fog. Cfs, not withdrawals. Just catching up with different ones on here.

I’ll probably watch some YouTube videos, one can learn so much on there. I’m also watching Little Dorrit on DVD, I love Charles Dickens. I might get my crochet too n do some diamond painting, it’s fun sticking the little beads in the pictures. I love seeing the end result.

Hope that you’re having a happy day too💚

Thanks, DS!  Yes, we will... Slowly but surely!

(Retired)

Thanks so much Carmie!  About the same--hanging in there!  Hope you are doing better!  Progress is so very slow--but I do believe it will happen!

XOXO

Yes slow n steady does it Luv2Knit,

Ive worked out it will take me about ten years or so to get off my meds doing microtapering as I can only taper by 5%. Im a slow little turtle, but will win the race in the end.

  • pysch med history: 1974 @ age 18 to Oct 2017 (approx 43 yrs total)
  •  Drug list: stelazine, haldol, elavil, lithium, zoloft, celexa, lexapro(doses as high as 40mgs), klonopin, ambien, seroquel(high doses), depakote, zyprexa, lamictal- plus brief trials of dozens of other psych meds over the years
  • started lexapro 2002, dose varied from 20mgs to 40mgs. First attempt to get off it was 2007- WD symptoms were mistaken for "relapse".
  •  2013 too fast taper down to 5mg but WD forced me back to 20mgs
  •  June of 2105, tapered again too rapidly to 2.5mgs by Dec 2015. Found SA, held at 2.5 mgs til May 2016 when I foolishly "jumped off". felt ok until  Sept, then acute WD hit!!  reinstated at 0.3mgs in Oct. 2106
  • Tapered off to zero by  Oct. 2017 Doing very well.
  • Nov. 2018 feel 95% healed, age 63
  • Jan. 2020 feel 100% healed, peaceful and content
  • Dec 2023 Loving life! ❤️ with all it's ups and downs ;)
