Cali, I use a magnesium oil spray on my skin instead of taking it orally. That might be something you could try just to see if it works better for you.

Sounds like you're doing great overall, glad to hear it!

Started on Prozac and Xanax in 1992 for PTSD after an assault. One drug led to more, the usual story. Got sicker and sicker, but believed I needed the drugs for my "underlying disease". Long story...lost everything. Life savings, home, physical and mental health, relationships, friendships, ability to work, everything. Amitryptiline, Prozac, bupropion, buspirone, flurazepam, diazepam, alprazolam, Paxil, citalopram, lamotrigine, gabapentin...probably more I've forgotten.

Started multidrug taper in Feb 2010.  Doing a very slow microtaper, down to low doses now and feeling SO much better, getting my old personality and my brain back! Able to work full time, have a full social life, and cope with stress better than ever. Not perfect, but much better. After 23 lost years. Big Pharma has a lot to answer for. And "medicine for profit" is just not a great idea.

Rhi, I have heard of the oil magnesium, I am intrigued :)

I am having that whole super sensitive skin again. When I touch my face, eyelid, leg etc., I get a strong abrasive feeling that s more uncomfortable than anything else but it's similar to the burning sensation I had on the chlorpromazine. Even inside my ear is sensitive. I had hoped I would feel anything like this again as it makes doing everyday things so damn uncomfortable grrr.

Now where would you heard of magnesium oil?   ;)

I had an inspiration, thinking about your experience with the mag oil.  Other people smarter than me can chime in, this is an intuitive call:  maybe it's better for your BELOW the heart than above.  Below would be like your knees, but your arms and shoulders and neck are above the heart.  Don't know what this means, like I said, it's an intuitive call, not based in any fact or knowledge whatsoever.

I wouldn't have the foggiest idea but I would trust and instinct! It's funny that my knees are fine but my hands sting like crazy. I put a bit on Mum's hands today to see and it didn't sting her, it didn't sting D either. But get this, I had some gloves on that my physio gave me and for some reason I could still slightly feel it. I'm unsure if there was a hole in the glove and then I rubbed my hands together. The gloves were in my backpack so it's possible. Lucky me

PS Please explain what you want to do with your first taper, and what your pdoc wants.  I think it would be good to get wiser opinions than mine before you "fight for what you want" vs. "giving in to what pdoc wants."

I think that cutting your daytime dose like we talked about is the easiest, least painful place to begin, but others here may have different ideas.  If enough of us agree, it may give you the ammunition you need to "fight for what you want" and surprise Dr. K by being successful!

Okay well I went to see my pdoc and asked her what tablet she was thinking to reduce first. I had in mind to reduce the seroquel dose at lunch time which is 100mg, it often bombs me out these days, but she wants to reduce the seroquel-xr first. I'm not sure which one is the best one to taper first starting the 13 January. I guess I need to figure that out so I when I see her for the last time this year I can tell her.

Mmmm.  Here's why I would cut the Seroquel XR last:  it's XR!  It provides 24 hour support, while the noon dose is "regular," or, "immediate release," so that cutting it would be easier.  When it's gone, I would go after the XR.  That's just me.  Plus, I think you have a good point about the sluggishness in the middle of the day it's giving you.  (remember when you took hundreds of mg PRN just whenever all day long?  How far you've come already!)

I don't know what dosages the XR comes in...but I suspect it will be more traumatic to switch from XR to immediate release just once a day.  Not that it will be traumatic - just safer the other way, I think.

You can get only as low as 50mg tablets of seroquel-xr. I know what you're saying about the lunchtime dose of the plain seroquel though and why that would be easier. Though if I'm on 2 x 300mg tablets one tablet could be one normal seroquel and one Xr I guess. Not that's what I'm choosing, just asking if that is possible???? I know how far I've come, I'm glad I can see it too :)

Something really interesting happened last night. I was actually very surprised. Since I have a huge sensitivity to all opiates and anti-inflammatories I can only take paracetamol/Tylenol when I have bad neck neck pain coupled with a horrible headache. So sometimes I take valium to relax the muscles in my neck so that it can help the paracetamol/tylenol to work properly. Usually this works well and I don't actually use it that often. I mostly just take the paracetamol/tylenol on its own. Because I had an addiction to valium for a long while (I went off it cold turkey at the very beginning of this year, yes I know but I didn't know what I was doing at the time) my pdoc is very careful with the prescription. She will hand it or post it to a nurse that comes here and it is in a safe and only he has the code.

Thing is yesterday I was given some for some muscle pain in my back but I didn't take it. Then last night I was going to take but I stood looking at it and I said to myself If you take that, what is it going to do to you? If you take it, will it hurt you? Do you really need it? No. Then why take it if you don't need it and you don't want it to hurt you? I put it back in the drawer and walked away and went to sleep without it. I did not want it. I did not need it. I don't want to hurt myself anymore than my body is already hurting. I want things to be even and steady and I want to hold. I don't want to touch a thing right. Wow... what a turn around that is. 10 months ago, I would not have been able to resist it. I would have taken it without a second thought. Now I can do it and I want to do it. Even I am amazed.

That's great!  Now you have one out of the safe for emergencies.  You can use it like those people who quit smoking, but carry around one cigarette "for later."  :-D

Overall, one benzo isn't as damaging.  Here's the thing:  before largactil, benzos and barbituates were used on people with manic and psychotic episodes.  They would just sedate the person for a month, or two, then wean them off if they could & the person would get better.

Now they use the atypicals, and the people are on them "for life," and they don't get better; in fact they get worse!  The benzos and tranquilizers were less damaging because they were for short term use.  I may have a screwed up vision of this, but that's how I see it.

I'm not dissing people who are struggling with the benzos, those struggles are very real.  But I also know that your neck pain is structural and the tools available here for you in Oz are not very good.  Valium is likely your best, safest thing for when you have extreme pain and need to get over the hump.  So put it on your altar as a symbol of your new journey!  ;-)  (well, away from the cat anyway)

I am so excited. Dr K agreed to let me reduce the seroquel first instead of the seroquel-XR. This is going to be so good because my lunch time dose will then hopefully not keep putting me to sleep. So on 6 January we go down to 50mg and we won't touch the serorquel-xr until March. I am really not looking forward to this in a way but yes in another way. If you get my drift. Yesterday I had an angry day and a depressed day at the same time... joy oh joy! I felt horrible and I kept niggling at D. It went all day that I felt like this. D has been smoking a lot of pot lately and when he does he gets extremely vague. I gave him a shopping bag to go to Aldi with and he lost it on the way and that was just a bus ride there. Then last night we found out the bag that had his phone and ipad in was also lost because he didn't realise that he had lost it until yesterday morning when I asked where his bag was. So now he owes for a plan that he got with the pad in September. This one will hurt him but I really hope it teaches him something. Last time he lost a bag, early last year, it had all our song lyrics, a mobile phone in it and the bag was expensive, but since this one is going to cost him for over a year and a half, it may help I hope. I hope today is better.

Well today is the first taper day for me. I am nervous as I just came out of a big high. I spent hundreds of dollars on stuff is all I can call it. I wasn't sleeping, it was a bit crazy around here, I even talked and laughed in my sleep, got really angry at people, plus I drove D mad. He admitted last night that it had been really hard. But I do know that now I've recognised it, it has pretty much gone. Now I'm just left with the aftermath. Joy! Anyway, I still want to try and taper because I am sick of falling asleep during the day. I will see how I go I guess. If it's not the right time I will know and I can always increase back and hold for a bit. So today it's down 50mg from 700mg of seroquel. Wish me luck :-)

Well done, and good luck.  I hope D has some understanding of what you are going through.

Imagine if he tapered off of his drug-of-choice.  Would that make him a nicer person?  Or would he go through hell first?

I'm reading some promising recovery stories at:  http://recovery-road.org/success-stories-2/

Most of them focus on benzos, but it's good to see people healing, and better.

So I had my first taper day and it really kinda sucked. I was already really emotional because of the manic stuff and then I cried in the post office when I didn't get a package but luckily it had just arrived there. Then I missed the time that I was to take my lower dose of seroquel. I went to the pharmacy and asked if they could cut the tablet for me as I also picked up some more and burst into tears there too. Was shaking really bad. Got home, have had a headache now for three days, so I was feeling awful about that. I then got some good news, a phone call from Trudi a psychologist at NFC about a spot that has come up in the Tuesday/Thursday DBT group and I can start on Thursday, yay! I slept horribly last night, most likely the lack of seroquel not helping either, the heat and my headache. This morning I got some excellent news, I got a high distinction for my last uni subject. Very excited about that. I feel more level this morning too. I guess we'll see how the day goes.

Well things went horribly wrong. I spent hours and hours crying and this was before the taper, during and after. I cried everywhere and I felt so low. I saw my outreach nurse yesterday and she told me to go up back on my original dose of seroquel. I did actually agree because I was actually unstable before I tapered but I just wanted to taper so bad that I lost sight of the real goal. Actually properly in the right way getting off of the meds. Not just because I had the 6th January in my head. So I reinstated the dose and will hold for another month. I start DBT today and that is an unknown but probably a good one, more support. I am not nervous now but I will be then in about four hours. After weeks of not sleeping, a manic episode later, a crash and a botched taper, I am okay and I slept last night :)

Not really a botched taper.  Just not the right time for it.  You're so right - and it's wise of you to see - that you have to be stable before you taper.

Unless, like with the largactil, you are having side effects.  But before that largactil business you were pretty stable.  And you may be having some swings and roundabouts still from the fast switch from Olanzapine, and the fast withdrawal of largactil.  Be patient with yourself.  You want the process to be gentle, as gentle as possible, especially since you have so much to address.

I encourage you to figure out WHY your behaviour goes through the roof.  What is the feeling you are trying to "fix"?  This is essential to stability.  Otherwise, "They" will just say to you, "well, you went off your meds!  what did you expect?" when really you want them to say:  "You know, you are so much better now, and not on nearly as many meds!"

I hope your experience in DBT today set you on the path.  I hope they didn't Medicalize you too much.  That was the great thing about the SAFE program in Chicago (Self Abuse Finally Ends) - there were NO diagnoses, only behaviours.  I'm hoping that the DBT can address that too.

I have a question. If someone could answer me that would be awesome. I have already spoken to Jan but she suggesting asking you guys too. I am falling asleep on my lunch time seroquel every day. In group the other day I was really awesome before I took it and then at lunch after I took it I was a zombie. I couldn't follow and that's when we do our new content and homework. I kept losing my place and I read the wrong things and just got stuck. Jan suggested splitting the dose. Have half early in the day and half at the end, like 9am and then 3pm. This could really solve my problem. What do you all think about this? I would really love some feedback.

I can't advise you. The mods will do that, but my son is tapering Seroquel and within an hour of his dose he wants to go to bed. This is why I give it to him at night. It makes sense you are tired if you are taking it during the day.

Thank you, I already take 600mg at night, the day dose is to keep the PRN dose stabilised and not all over the place. So splitting it to smaller portion could be a good move, just need some help with the idea of splitting it. I don't want to keep nearly falling asleep at lunch time.

Hello?  Is there anybody smart out there?  I'm at a loss, since Cali had a recent "impulse control" & sleep problems, her doc called it "mania" (as they do), just last week.  I'm reluctant to tell her to stop taking the dose because she was recently out of control.  Her doc would probably stay to stop the whole dose, and I wish I could agree with that, unless this is an adverse reaction.

She needs to be present for her DBT classes, but was "high" or "manic" for the first part of her class last week.....the day dose, the "PRN" dose of 100mg Seroquel is meant to keep her from flying off the planet in the daytime.

Instead, it's keeping her in bed, causing clumsy accidents in kitchen and bath.  Is this an adverse reaction?  Can she stop taking this daytime dose totally?  that's a 14% taper, and call that her baseline - even though she was not stable just last week?

Can someone please help? I can't keep going like this. I slipped in the bathroom and fell over and then a pot fell out of my dish drainer when I was looking for something in the cupboard, I accidentally touched the drainer and it hit me in the head and now it's all bruised and a cut. I also burned myself helping D cook. This was just afternoon seroquel. I fall asleep on 50mg twice today and once at lunch for no reason and then I don't sleep at night. It's hard in DBT as its affecting my ability to contribute to the group, which is super important. I'm at my wits end feel like throwing in the towel with it, I really do :(

Since I've had no help (I'm okay with that) as of tomorrow (Tuesday) I'm cutting out the 100mg lunchtime seroquel altogether. I fell asleep 3 times yesterday on the split dose, then couldn't get to sleep last night. I was generally sleepy all day, D had to steady me on several occasions when I nearly tripped or slipped. I looked like I was stoned off my brain as I found 50mg had a stronger reaction to 100mg. Strange I know but I have heard of this before. Can anyone advise?

I really wish I could advise and I am so sorry you are having such issues. I would never consider giving my son his seroquel at lunch or he would be asleep at his desk. Do you need meds at night and during the day? My son takes it one a day about an hour before bed.

Wow that is alot of seroquel. Clearly the lunchtime dose is doing more harm than good. Hopefully a mod will show up soon and help you but it would seem that tapering off that dose would be a good thing.

Well,,.I'm hoping the mods are okay.  I've never seen a plea go unanswered for so long.

At least you got an answer / plan from your pdoc.  How's it going on 25 mg at noon?

Good, not really noticing it now to be honest. I just am still struggling from the past few days. Breaking up with D and then getting back together was hard and I am so worried about his pay day on Thursday and whether it will be drugs again and I will be forced to say I can't do this. I'm terrified in all honesty. Coming off meds is hard enough without that.
