I use cal/mag citramate. It's VERY calming. It's a combo pill and can only be ordered online or a health food store. Thorne brand.

Sorry you're still struggling with this Aeroman. Even this doesn't add up to me. Someone who's been healed for years being thrown into WD again and for THIS long? From An AB? It's blows my mind. Are we suposed to walk on eggshells for the rest of our lives now afraid of getting sick as we might just take one thing that will send us back into hell??! Quite scary and I'm so sorry for you!! You've done your time years ago already. This isn't fair.

Trust me this is prob just from cipro. Flouroquinolone AB are nasty, it's what got me into this ssri mess. It does just as much harm if not more than ssri to a select few lucky ones like aero and me. Some get crippled for life....

Paxil start September 2003 due to Fluoroquinolone adverse reaction that I wish doc. knew what it was. 10mg. most of the time with a few short runs of 20mg. FAST tapered 3 times and finally hit poop out or a reaction to nsaid's in Nov.2013. Started a 10% taper Jan. 2014 and have been ok until Sept 14 and went through a short hell. Now plodding through and looking for the light with unrelenting insomnia and pain, fog, loss of interests....<p>12/20/14 - .8mg.

1/01/15 - .75 mg.

1/15/15 - .42 mg. better sleep now, hope it continues...

2/11-15 - .25 mg. doing really good!! 2 weeks feel 85% of old me!

3/17/15 .14 mg. Knee pain bad!

4/07/15 .05 mg. this is so small now that I am estimating and just licking it off palm small as a "."

4/13/15 NOTHING !!!! Took my last little micro dose on 4/12/15.

Thanks for the info Brandy!! Wow.

And can it harm someone this bad for like 6-7 months? Aeroman is still having a rough time and this was back in July I think? I've heard of many people reacting to AB's with anxiety and depression but only for a few weeks at most.

how can this crap still be on the market??!

13 years of Ssri's - celexa, Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft

2 fast tapers and 2 cold turkeys over the years

Psych med free since September 4th 2011 - fast tapered then CT'd 12.5 mg of Zoloft

How can we get a list of medications that are dangerous and we should be staying away from? I think someone on here started a list somewhere.

Thanks DLB.  I regret taking that med so bad.  I was doing so well on my Lexapro w/d recovery.  I assume I was very sensitive to meds that mess with your CNS, who knows.

Lexparo 10mg user for 2.5 years. Last dose was 2/27/2008 after a fast 1 month taper. Recovered around 2011. Had issues with depression, anxiety, akathasia, inner restlessness, vertigo, insomnia, loss of appetite, eye floaters just to name a few. Basically rode it out, employing the Dr. Claire Weekes method.

Took Cipro in July of 2014 and have been having set backs with nausea, vertigo, anxiety (racing thoughts), and depression the last half of 2014.

It sounds to me like it's a matter of nervous system being destabilized by the cipro. As Alex pointed out, floxins are known to cause such problems, even when one isn't recovering from psych meds, as far as I know. And certainly when your CNS might still be sensitive, even though no acute symptoms, for a while after withdrawal.

One bit of good advice I got on PP was when I got an unbelievably severe UTI when in acute paxil withdrawal, and my doctor was so alarmed about the severity (I was urinating large quantities of pure bright red blood - had had many UTIs when I was younger but never had that happen), he said I had to take cipro. And I was had a lot of substance sensitivities, including dangerously bad reactions to some medications, even before I went into withdrawal.

Laurie urged me to ask the doctor's office for the lab's urine C&S report listing of all the medications the bacterium was sensitive to. Cipro was listed tops on the list, but there were a number of other antibiotics as well. Made me realize there were almost always other options for meds, which is reassuring. (For example, I think cipro is a very heavy-duty med with high potential for bad side effects, that is being way overprescribed - too often without any valid reason for choosing that particular AB.)

Yes, a very heavy duty medication!  Stay away from it!

Glad you felt better Aeroman but sorry that you are feeling rotten again. Waves and windows, ride the waves and the windows will always open again although it feels like it never will!  Every single wave I have had I felt that this one is here for ever, but they always pass.

I tried chelated magnesium at one point but didn't like it, I don't know why but I felt 'jumpy' and my stomach didn't tolerate it very well. Mag glycinate is better for me.

Hope the window opens again very soon.

Thanks mammaP, I am sure I will get another window soon!  Just isnt fair but oh well.  Gives me an opportunity to practice more of Dr. Claire Weekes' method!

The reason I looked this up is I had a drug that sounded like that name. the flox it something or other after the car accident I broke a rib and had penumonia... I took it for a few days I think till my stomach pain was so bad I had to quit changed it xmass eve day.  I was on levoquin ...:(

I wonder if this is part of my nose dive I have been blaming on this accident.  crap I hate drugs...

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

Hi Aeroman;you have been an inspiration for me and for many others in this site.

I am sorry you had such a bad reaction to this drug.As a manner of fact cipro can give all the side efcts that you described.

May I ask how long have you been completely AD free?

Hi Alex, thanks for the message, glad that my story has helped some.  I didnt know Cipro could do this!  Wow...I thought it was a benign antibiotic. Who would have known?!

On Feb 2015, it will be 7 years I have been off.  I have been recovered/healed since 2011ish.  Trust me, the feeling was GREAT when I got passed w/d!!!!!!!

running through a field of lilies and roses. lol

Has anyone doctor or otherwise explained to you how this happened?  Why it happened?  Did you happen to get a list of other drugs to avoid?

peace

Thanks btdt!  Yes, we are called "Floxies" or being floxed by taking Ciprofloxin.

I have been generally doing better the last week or so but still have some residual issues, mainly with the anxiety stuff.  Yep, the good old adrenaline rushes in the morning typically.  I usually get them right before snoozing for a nap.  Just as I am about to go to sleep, I feel the anxiety kicking in.  Weirdest thing.  Anyway, I just accept the bewildering feelings/sensations until it goes away on its own.  And it always does.  I know this is temporary.  I found a Floxie Support group on Facebook and MANY people complain about the anxiety/depression/brain fog while or after Cipro or any other quinolones.

Just wanted to check in and say hello, that I am still ticking ;)

I am really glad to hear you are still hanging in there! You will be coming up on a year (in another half year or so) and I do hope you see lots more improvement. It's funny how we always kind of expect things to change on an anniversary date and they often do? Reminds me of feeling suddenly old the day I turned 62 and started getting SS.

What happened and how I arrived here: http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/4243-cymbaltawithdrawal5600-introduction/#entry50878

July 2016 I have decided to leave my story here at SA unfinished. I have left my contact information in my profile for anyone who wishes to talk to me. I have a posting history spanning nearly 4 years and 3000+ posts all over the site.

Thank you to all who participated in my recovery. I'll miss talking to you but know that I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines, suffering and rejoicing with you in spirit, as you go on in your journey.

I'm glad you're doing better Aeroman, and that you're still ticking! LoL. Thanks for the update. I was wondering how you have been doing. In this support group, what does the timeline seem to be with those recovering from those types of AB's?

Thanks, still chugging on...Yeah, I am back to counting the months/weeks I have been off Cipro and when the ___ really hit the fan.

thanks imac.  Some have said months, others like 1-2 years.  Either case, 99% of them said they recover from it but still have physical issues like aches and pains (tendon stuff) from Cipro.  I'll get through this just like you all will get through SSRI w/d

Yes. I do. I have actually been getting it again in the last week or so. I got it ALOT in acute and the first 3 years in WD. It's been a very common sx for many. I found loads on pp when it happened to me and I was scared. Now I find it no big deal. Maybe I'm just used to it. LoL. But it is aggravating. I also get the Wierd feeling like I need to take a deep breath during this time. ( not sleep apnea. I'm not alseep).

Sigh....yep, thats the one.  I remember getting these the first few months in Lexapro w/d.  It happened long ago (2008ish) that I have forgotten how it felt like.  I remember getting a sleep study done and nothing was found (surprise surprise).  Yeah, its like I am just about to doze off...zzzz...and bam!  heart racing and this feeling like I am falling/sinking back into my bed/seat.  Thanks for the reply :)

That's a great description. It does feel like your falling / sinking back into your bed/seat. Almost have to take a deep breath or gasp, along with the racing heart and palps. Sometimes I also used to get a quick adrenaline surge too. Before when it was really bad, I also woke up with all that happening throughout the night.

Wierd. Thanks for letting me know.

It doesn't fe like anxiety though. It happens when I'm not even feeling anxious. And only when I'm sleeping. I always thought it's a physical thing. It only happens when my autonomic system gets messed up. Did you ever have trouble with your autonomic aystem? ( like misfiring and everything not working properly?)

I get this when I am about to fall asleep and I'm one of those early wd people. Sounds to me like if it disappeared for both of you before, then it will disappear again.

Aero, it's a big deal to know that your autonomic nervous system was a mess and righted itself. Doesn't that mean your body has that healing ability and has already proven it?

Hi Aero,

I understand the antibiotic reaction competely. Floroquinolone antibiotics should be avoided at all costs especially with ADs and benzos. Cipro wrecked my Remeron taper completely. I was never able to stablize on Remeron after Cipro. Had to switch to another AD to taper.

Hope you get better soon.

It almost makes us scared to take anything anymore, even a simple aspirin.

Prozac 1999-2009 quit semi cold turkey.

2012 Placed on Seroquel 25 mg, Tranxene (Clorezepate) 3.75 mg 3x a day, Remeron 30 mg for anxiety/akathesia.

Weaned off Seroquel and Tranxene .to Remeron 15 Mg.

In May 2014 tried quitting Remeron at its lowest dose. Had severe withdrawals.Reinstated Remeron at 30 mg by doctor. August 5 2014 entered hospital. Doctor pulled the Remeron and bridged it to Pamelor (Nortriptyline) 40mg and Zyprexa 2.5mg.After removing the Remeron all my bad symptoms went away and I am stable.

9/11/14 - 7.5 mg tranxene, 40mg Pamelor, Zyprexa 2.5mg

12/29/14 -  20mg Pamelor, 1/6/15,  7/31/15 3.5mg, 8/10/15 3.2 mg, 9/15/15 2.2mg, 10/15/15 1.8mg

you took Cipro?! Wow, what did it do to you? I'm assuming it messed with your CNS while you were tapering? Anxiety? Dread? Depression? Brain fog?

Lexparo 10mg user for 2.5 years. Last dose was 2/27/2008 after a fast 1 month taper. Recovered around 2011. Had issues with depression, anxiety, akathasia, inner restlessness, vertigo, insomnia, loss of appetite, eye floaters just to name a few. Basically rode it out, employing the Dr. Claire Weekes method.

Took Cipro in July of 2014 and have been having set backs with nausea, vertigo, anxiety (racing thoughts), and depression the last half of 2014.

I had been tapering Remeron for close to a year and finally got down to 3.75. I quit at 3.75 with horrible withdrawal symtoms. Ending up going to the emergency room. At the same time they diagnosed me with a UTI and gave me Cipro. I was moved to the crisis rehabilitation center where they reinstated the Remeron along with seroquel and tranxene. I was fine and was released from the crisis center.

I quickly got off the tranxene and seroquel since they were at very low doses. I finished the cipro and and not long after I started getting a strange anxiety. It was very different from my normal anxiety. I also begin waking about 4 to 5 hours after the remeron. To make a long story short the sleep time kept getting shorter and shorter on the remeron. I begin taking the tranxene again for the anxiety but the benzo didn't help any more, helped at first, also magnesium helped some then stopped. I knew something had gone wrong with the remeron and after research I found out it was the cipro. My doc didn't believe Cipro could do that and said that it was my anxiety returning.

I knew better because this was so different from regular anxiety. I've had enough anxiety in my life to know the difference. The AD was no longer acting right. I stayed in this weird anxiety state for about three months and was not able to go to work. I finally told my doc he had to get me off the remeron or I was going to die. I really felt suicidal. I made him put me in the hospital if we were going to switch drugs. Not exactly what I wanted to do but I couldn't go on like that. After about the second night off remeron everything returned to normal. Now I'm tapering the new drug and doing fine.

I really can't explain what happened but I would bet a million dollars, if I were a betting person, that Cipro did it. I have no doubt.

After reading a lot about Cipro and related drugs I know people should stay away from it. I read that Cipro can really interfere with benzos. Lucklily for me it didn't effect the benzo, just the Remeron.

I had no brain fog or depression, just some weird feeling anxiety that never went away. I would have to drive around all day to get relief. I believe I put a thousand miles on my car driving around the county during that time period. One of my retired neighbors would also drive me around. I told him to not stop just keep on driving. I guess the moving helped me somewhat. I couldn't stay at one place for very long. I also had some kind of OCD and couldn't stop reading about drugs. I couldn't concentrate very well either. It kept getting worse as time went by.

I really believe I could have tapered the Remeron sucessfully if it had not been for Cipro. I will never take those antibiotics again. If I need one I will ask for a safer one like penicillin or something. If I had to take Cipro or die from the infection, I believe I would take death. I never want to go through that again.

I am well now. Some would say I got floxed but I really believe my AD got floxed and then turned on me.

Prozac 1999-2009 quit semi cold turkey.

anybody get the heart racing/palps; anxiety RIGHT before they doze off to sleep?

Yes.

Thanks, I do my best to spell out the issues the best I can.  I know I am not losing it, I tell myself.  Like everything else, I am riding this out.  I got those quick adrenaline surges too!  Yay!  I knew I wasn't alone, ha!  It sure does bite!

I am finding I am reacting to different drugs this far out.  I am at a loss to understand how this could be going on 7 years after quitting Effexor.  I am curious as to what your thoughts on this are?  Do you think this has something to do with your previous drug use or wd... or suspect it would be the same if you had a drug free past?  If this is related to Ad use or wd... I wonder how long the system stays sensitized I am starting to think forever just to be on the safe side.  In which case I think we need to be sorting out which drugs folks like us need to avoid.

Ideas?

Yes, I think it's a mix of me being a hypochondriac in a sense and my CNS being sensitive. However, not to the point of affecting quality of life. Going forward, I will be reading the side effects on drugs. If anything states psychiatric stuff, no way am I taking it.

I have reacted to many seemingly different sorts of drugs... I am afraid of that one that slips through... this year so far it was a bp med atenolol and a muscle relaxant baclofen... host of antibiotics.. maybe it is even a mix of drugs... steroids ee gad it likely is...

I did post something today about the types of drugs we may react to ... when it pops up around again I will rethink it and send you a link if I still think it fits.

Glad your quality of life is not affected that is the main thing to maintain...

Chicken, I know what you mean about that "normal" and "not normal" anxiety!  I have tried to describe it to many people.  It is a fear, a dread, an out of this world panic that arose after taking Cipro.  Not to mention the intense racing thoughts that accompany it.

hi btdt, I would like to see that link please.  Thanks.

Yeah, you learn to see what works for you and not against you.  I have learned to just ride out whatever happens to me.  I am tired of being a pill popper.  Hang in there my friend

The problem is that side effects don't SAY whether they affect the nervous system, so it is up to us to decode the side effects.

Now, after being rendered a cripple, I know that "muscle weakness" REALLY means "nervous system and mitochondrial damage." And "dizziness" means "your whole brain is getting its visual perception reprogrammed." And "confusion" means "destroying cognitive function and making you retarded."

The side effects listed are ALWAYS going to be euphemized. I agree that we need to be vigilant, but we also need to be aware that we are now on the lookout for hidden meaning when we look at side effects.

*I'm not a doctor and don't give medical advice, just personal experience
**Off all meds since Nov. 2014. Mentally & emotionally recovered; physically not
-Dual cold turkeys off TCA & Ativan in Oct 2014. Prescribed from 2011-2014

-All meds were Rxed off-label for an autoimmune illness.  It was a MISDIAGNOSIS, but I did not find out until AFTER meds caused damage.  All med tapers/cold turkeys directed by doctors

-Nortriptyline May 2012 - Dec 2013. Cold turkey off nortrip & cold switched to desipramine

-Desipramine Jan 2014 - Oct. 29, 2014 (rapid taper/cold turkey)

-Lorazepam 1 mg per night during 2011
-Lorazepam 1 mg per month in 2012 (or less)

-Lorazepam on & off, Dec 2013 through Aug 2014. Didn't exceed 3x a week

-Lorazepam again in Oct. 2014 to help get off of desipramine. Last dose lzpam was 1 mg, Nov. 2, 2014. Immediate paradoxical reactions to benzos after stopping TCAs

-First muscle/dystonia side effects started on nortriptyline, but docs too stupid to figure it out. On desipramine, muscle tremors & rigidity worsened

-Two weeks after I got off all meds, I developed full-blown TD.  Tardive dystonia, dyskinesia, myoclonic jerks ALL over body, ribcage wiggles, facial tics, twitching tongue & fingers, tremors/twitches of arms, legs, cognitive impairment, throat muscles semi-paralyzed & unable to swallow solid food, brain zaps, ears ring, dizzy, everything looks too far away, insomnia, numbness & electric shocks everywhere when I try to fall asleep, jerk awake from sleep with big, gasping breaths, wake with terrors & tremors, severely depressed.  NO HISTORY OF DEPRESSION, EVER. Meds CREATED it.

-Month 7: hair falling out; no vision improvement; still tardive dystonia; facial & tongue tics returned
-Month 8: back to acute, incl. Grand Mal seizure-like episodes. New mental torment, PGAD, worse insomnia
-Month 9: tardive dystonia worse, dyskinesia returned. Unable to breathe well due to dystonia in stomach, chest, throat
-Month 13: Back to acute, brain zaps back, developed eczema & stomach problems. Left leg no longer works right due to dystonia, meaning both legs now damaged
-7 years off: Huge improvements, incl. improved dystonia

Aero, may I ask your age? I remember another member saying you were on the young side, which could have aided your healing, along with the benefit of slow tapering. If I recall correctly, you are one of the people who tapered in a "best practice" model.

Hi Wiggleit, I'm 38 and I didn't taper slowly. I got off Lexapro in a months' time.

I went through, what I dubbed, Phase I where I felt the physical issues (headaches, dizziness/vertigo, nausea, etc) from Months 1 to 4.

Phase II started Month 4 and wow, intense depression, anxiety, akathasia, insomnia, weight changes, nightmares, etc.

I recovered in around Month 38-ish.
