ikam: tapering escitalopram

Did not go to work today, felt so tired. I came back home very late yesterday. And had a little accident, nothing happened to the car and mr, but I kept relieving this situation...it happened so quickly...strange thing, I have felt emotionally nothing, bit of anger...

Life depends on unexpected situations...

Hi Ikam,

I am so sorry to hear about your accident. Do you need to be checked over? Maybe call NHS Direct for a telephone consultation and if you get any new symptoms be aware of them in relation to your accident. It will be a shock to your system at the very least so try to be kind to yourself and get plenty of rest.

Maybe wait a couple of weeks before reducing again after this shock. I don't know about you but negative life events usually impact on me a short while after as in the moment adrenaline and the need to get through usually keeps you going. Just a thought. See how you are over the next few days.

I can't advise you on how to mix your medication for your next drop as I am not at this point yet. I'm sure that one of the moderators or someone else knowledgeable will pop along soon to advise you.

Take good care and if you need to talk any time you have my number.

Tilly x

Nothing really happened...just a "bang", it was at the parking place and we were both reversing...

What happened was more "acknowledged" on a subconscious level, or autonomous nervous system level...i had to go to work afterwards...

I got extremely tired today morning...i feel a bit detached...

So no other symptoms...

It has made me more cautious, bit anxious...

I want to drop by %5...

I feel I need to make another step as I feel stuck...

I don't expect my life being settled in the next half a year or even longer...

There will be always life events...

I got actually scared, as for couple of months life has been better...it is as if waiting for something to happen...again, this is more my personality trait than medication...

Yes, I have a smaller syringe, which was suggested by the pharmcy to use a small one and draw 0.5 for 10mg...

It seems that I have a stronger liquid, it is 20mg one

http://www.drugs.com/uk/cipralex-20mg-tablets-leaflet.html

It is really confusing, it seems that there are 10mg and 20mg liquids

I will ask at pharmacy again...

No need to quote and duplicate the pictures and text if you are answering right underneath.

You gave a link to a tablet and not a liquid. What is the strength of the liquid?

Is it this?

http://xpil.medicines.org.uk/ViewPil.aspx?DocID=21927

They are telling you that in one drop, there is one milligram of the drug. They are NOT telling you how much a drop, in milliliters, a drop equals. That is why it is so confusing on measuring it.

Please see this link on how to measure it. Read the whole thing and ask questions here in your thread.

Yes, this is correct link to 20mg cipralex oral drops...

I read the thread on escitalopram tips, but I got even more confused...

Must be something wrong with my thinking...

Nope, Alto says right there it is not a convenient drug for tapering.

I am copying the info to your thread and going to take a stab at figuring it out. Then we will put out an SOS for one of the mods to make sure it is right.

NOTE: In the UK, the liquid form is available at a 10mg:1mL or 20mg:1mL concentration -- very inconvenient for tapering. One version of the liquid form is Cipralex from Lundbeck.

To take 1mg of the 10:1 liquid, use the small slim 1mL oral syringe to take 0.1mL (one-tenth milliliter). The 1mL oral syringe has 10 ticks within .1mL, enabling taking .01mL (one-hundreth milliliter) or, given the 10:1 concentration, .1mg (one-tenth milligram) escitalopram.

Ok, So the 20:1 liquid would have 20 mg in 1 milliliter. Half a ml would be 10 mg. .25 ml would be 5 mg.

You are going to have to put .25 ml of the solution into a small amt of water, say 1 ml.

But now I am stuck, I don't know how to measure it out because I think you have to account for the whole amount, 1.25 ml. (1.25 ml = 5 mg). Half of that is .75 ml and would be 2.5 mg. But you need 2.3 mg.

Need a mod to help, please!

You did not get far enough, I got you to 2.5.

How are you taking the 2.5 mg now that you mention in your sig????????

Are you breaking up tablets? If so you could change to weighing the cut pieces for more precise measurements or else if you want to follow Alto's instructions for the 10:1 solution, dilute your 20:1 so it is 10:1.

Are you making a liquid from the tablet with water? If you're adding 40mL water to 10mg, then you take 9.2mL to get 2.3mg.

You could always ask your pharmacist how to take 2.3mg from the packaged Cipralex liquid. Or, do you have a relative with math ability?

To change the subject, I have tendency to sabotage my progress, this was the reason I did not get to work today, as it has been going good...

I have difficult with "keeping good", the need to turn everybody against me, because this is what I learnt long time ago...

I MUST go to work tomorrow...i am finding it hard to motivate myself...

I know, if I will sabotage this I will be having lots of problems...

I must go tomorrow, I will...

I will "report" here tomorrow after work...

I am finding it so difficult...i was the bad one in my family, the bad one at school...

When I get something good I "try" to destroy it, to be on the familiar ground...

See you tomorrow...

I shared my method with you earlier Ikam on how to taper using the 1 ml/20 mg solution.

Adding 19 ml water to 1 ml drug solution, take whatever the mg ( now same as ml) you want. It will be easier not converting mg to ml or verse visa by this way of dilution.

Did it work for you? Why you are confused now again.

Good luck xxx

2000 - sertraline for job anxiety low confidence (17 years old) ..which turned the next 16 years into nightmare!

On/off sertraline severe withdrawals every time. 2014 - felt better as reduced dose of sertraline no more inner restlessness. Doctor rushed off again. Hit severe withdrawal. Lost the little I had in life. Couldn't get stable again on 12.5mg. Was switched to prozac. Had severe reaction to prozac..came off in November 2015 at 6mg as felt more confused and damaged on it..Even more withdrawal ..rage, depression, dyphoria, near constant suicidal ideation, self harm impulses, doom, concrete block in head, unable to do much of anything with this feeling in head..went back on 6mg of sertraline to see if would alleviate anything. It didn't..reduced from December to June 2016 came off at 2.5mg sertraline as was hospitalised for the severe rage, suicidal impulses, and put on 50mg lofepramine which in 2nd week reduced all symptoms but gave insomnia which still have..psych stopped lofepramine cold turkey..no increased withdrawal symptoms new symptoms from lofepramine except persistant insomnia which has as side effect.

Taking Ativan for 8 months for the severe rage self harm impulses 1-3 times a week (mostly 2 times a week) at .5mg. Two months (I'm unsure exactly when the interdose started to happen) ago interdose withdrawal seemed to happen..2 days I think after the Ativan.

Nightmare that could have been avoided!

Go easy on yourself, this is a hard thing to do for the best of us.

What happened and how I arrived here: http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/4243-cymbaltawithdrawal5600-introduction/#entry50878

July 2016 I have decided to leave my story here at SA unfinished. I have left my contact information in my profile for anyone who wishes to talk to me. I have a posting history spanning nearly 4 years and 3000+ posts all over the site.

Thank you to all who participated in my recovery. I'll miss talking to you but know that I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines, suffering and rejoicing with you in spirit, as you go on in your journey.

You will start when the time is right for you. Have faith in yourself, Ikam. I have faith in you. Trust your judgement and all will be well. Throw out the timelines. They do not accommodate real life. I believe in you. Take the drops in your own sweet time, lady! There is no race. But in our particular race, the tortoise so often wins!

Thank you for your support. I am feeling a bit down today, woke up with the feeling of powerlessness, as this drug is still in my body and I just cannot stop it...it makes me feeling low and irritable...and this is all because of my stupid thinking! I wanted to be fixed and I went to see a psychiatrist privately in October...

I know now that no medication can fix me...

It is also sad that I see many people on meds and cannot help them...I can only be VERY mindful and tell them NEVER to stop...

My brother is on antidepressants, my mother, one of my friends, some people I work with...

I feel so angry today, as I cannot stop this epidemic of antidepressant era...

I have started my 5% today. I am still doing this with a tablet. I get my solution by using 10mg syringe and 10mg tablet. I get four 10ml syringes of water and 10mg tablet. This gives me 2.5mg liquid. Then it is easier to count my decrease with 10ml syringe, as 0.5ml equals 5%...

I was very anxious to start, but I have to take this risk one day. And as I don't know if tomorrow will be better or more difficult, I really cannot find the best time for doing this.

I hope at some point my symptoms will be more predictable, as I had with Effexor, I exactly knew what to expect with each decrease, I felt more in control...

I have noticed yesterday that my hands get kind of numb when I type on computer; I did not decrease yesterday, but this symptom was quite bad...

So I need to recognise what symptoms relate to tapering, what to life and which to both...

Hi Ikam,

I'm so sorry to hear that you are feeling low. I empathise with these feelings and feelings of grief as to the power that these drugs have over us and the losses that they have caused. I feel that these feelings are similar to a grieving process for me. Please don't blame yourself. If we had all known the truth about these drugs in the first place, I doubt that as many people would have taken this path. At the very least, we would have been given the choice to give informed consent and would have known what to expect. But we weren't. So we have to make our way through this as best we can and support each other in the process.

You have incredible strength to be functioning as well as you are in stressful circumstances. Give yourself credit for this. I really hope that your progress with your taper goes well and your symptoms lessen. I am not in a good way myself, as you know, but I am always happy to listen if you ever need to talk. I genuinely mean this.

I hope that your day is kind to you.

Take care and speak soon.

(I don't know how to fix it but I cannot answer using Quote option; I am now working from my laptop, as my tablet stopped working- maybe sensitive to my WD???)

Thank you Tilly...

yes, we can support each other and this is so IMPORTANT...

As I am going through everything on my own, this is even more important. Also, when talking to people who have not experienced WD themselves, I don't get enough empathy and understanding...

Second day of 5% of 2.5 mg

Woke up very low today and anxious...did not want to get up...but I have really nothing to get up for...

I have been more sensitive to noises today...(the builders have been working today, the neighbours hovering, etc.)...

I am also less patient...and more worried...

I respond stronger to things, e.g. noise upstairs...

And I am tired of this constant stress, I cannot even relax over the weekend...

But all the above may relate to stress as well...so I guess, this is BOTH, as usually...

WD makes everything sharper and brings back many things...

Sometimes I think that AD hide everything and it stays unresolved, so it is brought back when tapering...

I wish sometimes I could just die...

Sending you huge hugs, Ikam. My heart goes out to you.

I am going to try to get some rest for a few hours. Would you like me to call you later this afternoon?

Try to do something nice for yourself or at least something distracting to lift these awful feelings.

Thinking of you.

Thank you...

I have more problems today with distracting myself...

I get so easily connected to all noises around me...this must be WD...I seem to be oversensitive...

I have stopped enjoying warmer weather, as people just become more noisy...all the windows opened, music, etc.

I will try to get more relaxed...

I may start cooking, this usually makes me feeling calmer...

Sometimes I have to work over the weekend as well, I did yesterday evening and I will tomorrow...

So only Sunday to relax...

Life is just so difficult at the moment...

It must be WD, as I feel I cannot detach myself from all these nuisances...

I went through a phase of increased annoyance at sounds in my environment over the past few months. It seems to be going away. For me, it certainly was WD, associated with other WD symptoms such as the ear ringing. Nerves all just extra sensitive and raw as they wake up and heal after being numbed by SSRIs for years.

Hell hath no fury as an SSRI scorned.....

Prozac:   20 mg 1996 – May 2003 CT to 0 mg; by Aug 03 CRASH then protracted WD 3 yrs

Zoloft:    2004 few weeks;, CT to 0 mg

Effexor:  2005 few months CT to 0 mg; bad withdrawal.

Lexapro:  10 mg from 2009 – 2011; cut dose in half to:

Lexapro:    5 mg from 2011 – Feb. 2014; CT to 0 mg; 2 months of fatigue, followed by:
Aug - Oct 2014 Lexapro WD Insomnia Wave; sleeping very good from Nov 2014 - Nov 2015; broken sleep pattern Dec 2015 - Jan 2016

Dec 2014 - present: Brutal Lexapro WD ear ringing/head ringing/head pressure lasting for 14 months now.

24 months SSRI-free

Yeah, it makes sense that the nerves are just woken up from a long sleep...

Additionally, I cannot remove my extra stress (noisy area, working extra time,etc.)...

I am usually better in evening...

I don't have many symptoms with this decrease...but it is just a second day...

Evening, almost 7pm

I am better now.

Spent some time on computer organising my web-page and other matters. I have noticed that my right hand is getting numb, left hand is ok. So maybe it is something to do with writing rather than WD?

Sometimes I think that AD hide everything and it stays unresolved, so it is brought back when tapering...

I've always believed this.  They suppressed the troublesome parts of me, which come back in exaggerated form in withdrawal.
