Does anyone remember?

Not too long ago I remember reading something about the doctor who 'coined' the diagnosis of 'bipolar' recanted it (in so many words), saying he "made it up and no longer believes it himself".

Before anyone jumps all over me: don't. My memory may be faulty and the above statement in "quotes" is a paraphrase of what I think I remember. But it had something to do with the original doctor and I cannot narrow down search terms enough to find it. Modern search engines have become too hard to use and none will return "exact matches" for a phrase. Just including the word 'bipolar' loads up the results terribly.

Maybe it wasn't even 'bipolar'? It was something, though.

I think it was ADHD you are thinking of CW.  I read that on MIA? I think?  I know I didn't read that here.

But if it turns out you are correct, I'd like to see the info as well, if you find it. I could swear though that I read that the person who first invented ADHD did recant though; although technically it would not be one person who put the diagnosis out there as it would have gone through the voting process at the APA to get in the DSM.

(Also, anyone else reading I'm not up for a debate about this either, just repeating what I recall reading.)

Yes definitely! I don't want a debate either. I an just trying to research something for someone.

So maybe that is why I had no search hits on a phrase that included 'bipolar'. I'll try 'adhd'.

Thanks, US!

Not sure how this relates but I understand the term "hyperkinetic syndrome" was around well before the term ADHD came into being.

Ahh yes, it was in the DSM-II in 1967 as "hyperkinetic reaction of childhood disorder".  The following article is long but interesting.

Just some info for those who are interested :)

well, you did a lot better than I did. I would have been WEEKS looking for something that didn't exist! I am so glad you are here, US. You are always dropping gems here and there that are a treat to read.

Thanks CW, that was kind of you to say!  Glad you are here too, or I'd still be intro-thread-less and wandering empty-handed looking for someone to fill my order of purritos!  :)
