Celeste - Struggling with Prolonged Withdrawal Syndrome

"I had relief and could have recovered a good deal but just kept putting more stress on myself. Self care is so important for us. Listen to your bodies.'

Don't be too fast to put all that blame on yourself this process is a trickster and sometimes we could make a choice that we think made a difference when all along it did not change a thing as the windows and waves were coming no matter what we did or didn't do.  It is very unpredictable that is part makes it hard to deal with long term as human brains are built to find patterns that we can predict this process completely different.

a video describing the process is here

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

Thanks B. Although I feel like my choice to go back to work definitely contributed to this crash. My nervous system is more destabalized now. I'm trying hard not to ruminate so much about it....i just have so much despair over it. I didn't need to immediately start working again but I was worried about finances. I was also having severe Benzo WD anxiety...more like terror. I felt very anxious to do something...couldn't sit still...probably akithisia. I thought I could handle waiting tables again. I just can't see the light now. It seems i've just gotten worse since March. Just seems like everything I do makes symptoms worse.

My CNS seemed to have destabilized so much. I worked for 3 months 3 days per week at the most and was drinking caffeine to push me through for 2 months. I had no idea how bad I would crash. I was feeling ok before I went back to work. I had energy...was suffering from akithisia. Right now leaving the house makes things worse. It stresses my NS just to talk! i feel the stress on my spine and I have constant tinnitus now. My spine shakes as well. Cognition is bad too. Insomnia, hypersensitivity. I'm very lucky to have my husband or this would be a terrible ordeal. I feel like I'm severely, permanately damaged. Has anyone ever died from this?

Celeste did you feel like this at the beginning when you stopped meds ?

Xanax PRN ( 1/2 of .25mg approximately 2-3 a month when needed ) since May 2015

In April 2016 started birth control and in my opinion it triggered anxiety for almost a week straight and took 1/2 .25mg Xanax everyday for that week ( never had taken that many in a row before )

Saw the family MD and gave me Prozac 20 mg.

took it for 6 days and could not handle the side effects and had to stop working

Went back to the dr on the 7 day and told me to stop CT . I told him that I was scared to stop so suddenly so he gave me 10mg to take to see if the side effects decreased

Took the 10mg that night and the next day felt so much worse . After that did take anything any more except and antibiotic due to UTI

It's been almost 7 weeks and I have a lot of weakness ( comes and goes) anxiety , cortisol urges at night and worse in the morning which usually lessens throughout the day , tinnitus , heavy leg feeling , fatigue and burning skin mostly my left arm, face and neck mainly when I fee the cortisol surges .

Hey Prozac20. No I didnt...ive gotten increasingly worse due to stress and intermittent Benzo use. Once i understood that i stopped using the Benzo in August. I believe I went into WD though because of the symptoms that came. Didn't realize you could go into WD from intermittent use until recently. I thought the symptoms were more added protracted SSRI symptoms brought on by stress. They were letting up by December so I went back to work in January 3 days a week. I had horrible akithisia so I thought waiting tables would be good but it broke me down and I crashed hard...I did it for 2 months then went down to 1 day a week and even that was killing me. I stopped at the end of March and the symptoms have been getting worse. Ive gotten bloodwork, MRI and seen a neurologist and everything is good on paper. Well except my hormones, they're a bit out of whack.

Hi all. I really need some input. Since this last crash ive had my withdrawal symptoms got pretty bad. I really havent been leaving my house to minimize stimulation. I tried to explain to my parents about WD but they think I'm self diagnosing myself from something I read over the internet. They want me to get counseling but I refused. I am not well enough to leave my house! Anyway, my Dad mentioned 302 to my husband. My husband wouldn't do it and I'm just wondering would he legally have the final say so? I'm trying to research and find that out myself but any knowledge would be super helpful. This frightens me because my nervous system has become sensitized to meds and a psychiatric ward would be a dangerous situation for me. Please help if anyone has any knowledge regarding this.

It's both protracted SSRI WD and Benzo WD. My Benzo use was intermittent but there was at least a 6 month period when I was using twice a week.

hi i really need some advice. i waz recently hospitalized and force medicated on Risperidone. Im on 3 mg but went all the way up to 5 but was extremely restless so they brought me down to 3. i felt this decrease with some insomnia. it still hasnt completely gone away and the decrease was about 2 weeks ago. ive been on it 4.5 weeks total. im wondering how i should go about tapering it for that amount of time. i already have a very sensitized nervous system and kindled brain from prior withdrawals. im nervous to taper at all because it's improved my sleep even with the insomnia from the decrease but ir is still making me pretty restless and distressed. so im reacting adversely but it has improved my sleep. im just not sure how to go about this.

Hi Celeste, are ypu still in hospital? What happened that made you be admitted?  Have you taken any other drugs after quitting, but before being hospitalised?

I'm sorry for all the questions I am just trying to get the full picture. I can't see any mention of an antipsychotic in your signature, is this the first time on them?

It sounds like it is helping if you are able to sleep.  Can you tell us the syptom pattern? That is how you feel in the morning and as the day goes on. Do you feel worse after taking it?  Is it once a day?  Sleep is important and my initial thoughts are that if you can sleep and become stable you can taper off very slowly later. The dose may be too high, or even too low which is why we need all the information.  I am sorry that you ended up in the hospital, you must have been very scared.

hi MammaP. thanks for your reply. the antipsychotic is tHe oNLY thing not in my signature. everything else is up to date. i was hospitalized on an eating disorder due to severe malnutrition. the med was forced because I still wasn't eating. it did not help with the eating any...just sleep. i was able to stabalize my weight and labs however and have been discharged.

im on 3 mg currently. no other meds now or for a long time. i was on 5 mg but that had me way too restless and was lowered in the hospital 2-3 weeks ago. my sleep has been disrupted after the decrease and still hasnt improved. but its still better than it waz before starting the med.

i wake up feeling agitated and restless at about 4 am and this gets worse at 1 pm when i take it. i take it once daily. the restlessness and distress subsides a bit by evening but not completely. its defintely the worst right after taking it.

so even tho ive only been on a montH, its still suggested i taper very slowly? thank you again for your help.

Celeste, what do you mean by an eating disorder? Is this something you had before taking drugs?

What time of day do you take risperidone? Why did they put you on risperidone instead of mirtazapine?

i take it at 1 pm. i have no idea why they didn't put me on mirtzapine.

Since you've been taking 3.0mg only 2 weeks, I think I might reduce from 3.0mg to 2.5mg. Please let us know how you're doing.

thanks Alto I will. i have a question tho. do you think a drop to 2.25 would be too much. i could do that myself with a pill cutter. Im trying to get an appointment with a psychiatrist ASAP but it may take some time and may not be able to get 2.5 mg for a little while yet.

Wouldn't 2.5mg be half a tablet? If you can't do that, 2.25mg might work, given it's been only a couple of weeks at the increased dosage.
