US suicide rates in the SSRI era

Recommended Posts

I went to https://www.afsp.org/understanding-suicide/facts-and-figures to see if there might be a pattern related to the advent of new meds.

The Prozac boom was around 1986, I think. Effexor and Paxil came out in 1993.

Interesting that suicide rates began to rise in 2001, after declining for a while. Being a devout Effexor-paranoid, I wonder if that was enough time for people who were on it to start trying to get off it, to ill effect. But of course other broader factors such as the economy and the return of military people could be at play. (Though, again, meds are often given to those people.)

For what it's worth I am experience deja vu as I type this, so please forgive me if I already posted it...maybe it's not just deja vu!

And my heart goes out to all those people whose stories make up these data and the people they left behind. I know it is not all due to meds by any stretch.
