Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

Mechanism of action[edit]

Bismuth subsalicylate (the active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol) is used as an antidiarrheal and to treat some other gastro-intestinal diseases by way of an oligodynamic effect, which relates to killing microbes with small doses of heavy metal.

The means by which this works is still not well understood. It is thought to be some combination of:

  • Retarding the expulsion of fluids into the digestive system through irritated tissues, by "coating" them.
  • Reducing inflammation/irritation of stomach and intestinal lining.
  • Killing some bacteria that cause diarrhea. There is evidence that salicylic acid from hydrolysis of the drug is antimicrobial for E. coli.[3]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oligodynamic_effect

Bacteria are in general affected by the oligodynamic effect. Viruses in general are not very sensitive to this effect. This disparity suggests that the mechanisms exerting the most influence over toxicity are interfering with metabolism, since viruses are not metabolically active.

Pepto-Bismol is a salicylate. The way that it works is not fully understood. It is thought to limit secretions in the digestive tract, reduce inflammation in the stomach and intestines, and inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and viruses that can cause intestinal tract diseases.

Before using Pepto-Bismol:

Some medical conditions may interact with Pepto-Bismol. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have diabetes, gout, arthritis, fever, mucus in the stool, inflammation of the stomach, Kawasaki syndrome, kidney problems, chickenpox, the flu, or joint problems (in children), or if you are dehydrated
  • if you have a history of stroke or a certain type of bulging blood vessel (aneurysm) in the brain

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Pepto-Bismol. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Insulin, methotrexate, or valproic acid because actions and side effects may be increased by Pepto-Bismol
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (eg, lisinopril) or sulfinpyrazone because their effectiveness may be decreased by Pepto-Bismol
  • Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) because the risk of bleeding may be increased by Pepto-Bismol
  • Salicylates (eg, aspirin) because the risk of side effects or toxic effects may be increased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Pepto-Bismol may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.
