The comments are interesting. When I read them there were more pro-drug commenters than people like me. The ignorance is distressing.

2009: Cancer hospital said I had adjustment disorder because I thought they were doing it wrong. Their headshrinker prescribed Effexor, and my life set on a new course. I didn't know what was ahead, like a passenger on Disneyland's Matterhorn, smiling and waving as it climbs...clink, clink, clink.

2010: Post surgical accidental Effexor discontinuation by nurses, masked by intravenous Dilaudid. (The car is balanced at the top of the track.) I get home, pop a Vicodin, and ...

Whooosh...down, down, down, down, down...goes the trajectory of my life, up goes my mood and tendency to think everything is a good idea.
2012: After the bipolar jig was up, now a walking bag of unrelated symptoms, I went crazy on Daytrana (the Ritalin skin patch by Noven), because ADHD was a perfect fit for a bag of unrelated symptoms. I was prescribed Effexor for the nervousness of it, and things got neurological. An EEG showed enough activity to warrant an epilepsy diagnosis rather than non-epileptic ("psychogenic") seizures.

:o 2013-2014: Quit everything and got worse. I probably went through DAWS: dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome. I drank to not feel, but I felt a lot: dread, fear, regret, grief: an utter sense of total loss of everything worth breathing about, for almost two years.

I was not suicidal but I wanted to be dead, at least dead to the experience of my own brain and body.

2015: I  began to recover after adding virgin coconut oil and organic grass-fed fed butter to a cup of instant coffee in the morning.

I did it hoping for mental acuity and better memory. After ten days of that, I was much better, mood-wise. Approximately neutral.

And, I experienced drowsiness. I could sleep. Not exactly happy, I did 30 days on Wellbutrin, because it had done me no harm in the past.

I don't have the DAWS mood or state of mind. It never feel like doing anything if it means standing up.

In fact, I don't especially like moving. I'm a brain with a beanbag body.

Dear Mods--I just discovered that JayPea had posted the same link under the title A Good Read and Very Timely. Perhaps our posts should be merged, or one of them eliminated. Regardless, it is indeed a good read.

Done.  Also, gave her the link to this site.

Finished taper on June 10, 2010

Temazepam on a PRN basis approximately twice a month - 2014 to 2016

Beginning in 2017 - Consumption increased to about two times per week

I did it! Also recommended that she visit the site for advice on tapering. Lucky for her that her AD is Wellbutrin. It seems like we don't have as many members here struggling with that one as with Effexor, Paxil, and Zoloft, plus the C drugs (Cymbalta, Celexa, etc). But the trazadone and the benzo...oh boy.

If she tapers to the rate her nervous system requires and is successful, it could mean a great deal in terms of teaching others the value of careful tapering.

If her taper is a failure because of withdrawal syndrome that is diagnosed as "relapse," it will confirm the received wisdom that people need drugs for life.

I went there just now and clicked on top picks for comments this is it:

Here it is again the diabetes reference that drives me crazy getting the best seat in the house.  I will tell you one thing whatever pharma paid the marketing company for coming up with that term was sure worth the money as here we are decades later and people are quoting it still.  It has taken on a life of it's own eat sleeps and follows me around the net taunting me. Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

I share your frustration as the diabetes comparison drives me nuts.   If people really did some critical analysis, they would know that is a bunch of BS since while you can measure insulin to make sure you are taking the right amount of meds, that can't be done with neurotransmitters.  Hmm,maybe I will post this in the comments section.

Alto is probably right, that a rough discontinuation will be deemed a relapse. However, that is an opening for us to reply in the comments.

Am I missing something here... all I see is a benzo...

"I had reduced my dose of lorazepam, the benzodiazepine (anti-anxiety medication) I take before bed, from one milligram to .75 milligrams. "

Not what I expected after reading this.

"In the fall of 2014 the author decided to quit the prescription medications she has been taking to treat her anxiety, depression and insomnia, and began the process of gradually reducing her dosages."

Is there a link I am missing?

Thank you, JayPea, for posting this week's column.  I think it is very brave of the author to post her experience so publicly.  Hopefully this will help shed some light to the world about withdrawal and how challenging it is to go off of psych meds.  As others have already mentioned in this thread, I do hope she slows down her taper.

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg; 3/1/24: 1.25 mg; 3/8/24: 1.22 mg; 3/15/24: 1.19 mg

She seems to be down to 150mg a day of Bupropion, which is a full therapeutic dose for many people. I don't recall any mention of her other drug in this installment--is it Clonapin?

It is nice that she talks about the mania or hypomania she experienced initially on that very high dose, 450mg. Rather than merely alleviate depression, it triggered a personality change. It makes me happy that this is in a major newspaper.

I have not read the new bit yet... but I copied this from one of her previous articles.

""I had reduced my dose of lorazepam, the benzodiazepine (anti-anxiety medication) I take before bed, from one milligram to .75 milligrams. ""

I had read the first two and did not see an AD mentioned so was not going to read the last one guess she is putting out information as she sees fit ... glad she mentions the hyopmania too... wonder tho if she really up to doing this subject justice in her wd state. Hope she is... I would not have been but I went ct... maybe it will help in the long run.

If she hits a sore spot in her recovery and ends up re medicated as she does not know the sore spot is normal wd... it could all fall to heck quickly and take her with it.

That is my opinion on this so far... wd is hard enough without adding to the pressure but I still hope she can do both document both I just see a lot of possible pitfalls... she does not have the benefit of experience and could break at any point along the way by making a too drastic drop - not holding long enough - not knowing basically.  I know she has the info to this site I just wish I knew she was using it.

Guess I have no other ideas on the subject... just a lot of wishing.  I have great respect for drugs and withdrawal and all the powers they posses it is a very difficult thing to do even when you have support and information at your beck and call. Lost my thought if I had one...peace

BTDT,

I don't think she is using the information from this site.  I emailed her twice in an attempt to get her to understand that she needed to go slowly and there wasn't any acknowledgement of what I was saying.

Drug cocktail 1995 - 2010
Started taper of Adderall, Wellbutrin XL, Remeron, and Doxepin in 2006
Finished taper on June 10, 2010

Temazepam on a PRN basis approximately twice a month - 2014 to 2016

Beginning in 2017 - Consumption increased to about two times per week

April 2017 - Increased to taking it full time for insomnia

I truly appreciate your efforts to contact her too bad she did not reply it could have increased her odds of an successful taper and recovery is how I see it.

Maybe she is just busy and will come here later.

Here is the new installment. I don't even know why she is writing about this. Unfortunately she is, so far, making it seem like getting of psych drugs is pretty easy.

You are right. She is very lucky. And why not write about it, regardless of how it is going? I guess my beef is with the New York Times overall for not covering withdrawal as a newsworthy topic in general. But maybe they will. Maybe they have and I missed it.

Are they any other classes of medicine that cause a worsening of the original condition if discontinued? Like if you go off your bp meds does your blood pressure become more problematic than it was before you started them? Or just go back to the way it was?

"Rebound" is very common with stopping any drug, but I think biological function usually returns to baseline eventually. I think it may be the brain's response to the rebound that makes psych drugs unique for some.

1st round Prozac 1989/90, clear depression symptoms. 2nd round Prozac started 1999 when admitted to dr. I was tired. Prozac pooped out, switch to Cymbalta 3/2006. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder due to mania 6/2006--then I was taken abruptly off Cymbalta and didn't know I had SSRI withdrawal. Lots of meds for my intractable "bipolar" symptoms.

Zyprexa started about 9/06, mostly 5mg. Tapered 4/12 through12/29/12

Wellbutrin. XL 300 mg started 1/07, tapered 1/18/13 through 7/8/13

Oxazepam mostly continuously since 6/06, 30mg since 12/12, tapered 1.17.14 through 8.26.15

11/06 Lithium 600mg twice daily, 2.2.14 400mg TID DIY liquid, 2.12.14 1150mg, 3.2.14 1100mg, 3.18.14 1075mg, 4/14 updose to 1100mg, 6.1.14 900 mg capsules 7.8.14 810mg, 8.17.14 725mg, 8.24.24 700mg...10.22.14 487.5mg, 3.9.15 475mg, 4.1.15 462.5mg 4.21.15 450mg 8.11.15 375mg, 11.28.15 362.5mg, back to 375mg four days later, 3.4.16 updose to 475 (too much going on to risk trouble)

9/4/13 Toprol-XL 25mg daily for sudden hypertension, tapered 11.12.13 through 5.3.14, last 10 days or so switched to atenolol

7.4.14 Started Walsh Protocol

56 years old

when i first went off drugs it was easy too - until 3 or 4 months later.... i think that happens for many people too.

Started in 2000 - On 150mg most of the time, (but up to 225mg at highest dose for 6 months in the beginning)
Reduced off easily first time - but got depressed (not too much anxiety) 6 months later
Back on effexor for another 9 months.
Reduced off again with no immediate w/d - suddenly got depressed and anxious ++ again 3 or 4 months later.
Back on effexor - this time for 3 years
Reduced off over a month - 6 weeks later terrible anxiety - back on.
Rinse and repeat 4 more times - each time the period before the anxiety comes back got shorter and shorter
Jan - July 2012 75mg down to 37.5mg;, 8/3/12 - 35mg. 8/25/12 - 32mg. 9/11- 28mg, 10/2 - 25mg, 10/29 - 22mg, 11/19 - 19.8mg; 12/11 - 17m,
1/1- 15.5mg; 1/22 -14mg, 2/7 14.9mg, 2/18 - 17.8mg - crashed big time: back to 75mg where i sat for 2 years....

4th  March 2015 - 67.5mg;   31st March - 60mg;  24th April - 53mg; 13th May - 48mg; 26th May - 45mg;  9th June - 41mg; 1 July- 37.5mg; 20 July - 34mg; 11 August - 31mg; 1st Sept - 28mg;  1st Dec - 25.8mg;  28th Dec - 23.2mg; 23rd Jan-21.9mg; Feb 7th- 21mg; March 1st - 20.1mg, March 30th - 18mg

that is what worries me. SFSG (so far so good). But with all the reported symptoms similar too and even mimicking MS, I will have a time determining the cause if it is delayed and not immediate.  The up side is that I have had to incorporate them into my life over the last 20 years so I'm hoping it will be just more of the same.

(fatigue, nausea, hypersensitive to light and sounds, spasticity etc.)

Because the 2.5mg of Norvasc was making me very tired, I was going to try taking it in the evening before bedtime.   No dice as due to being late in taking it in the morning, I started to get dizzy so I took it.   So far, not too bad but I am hoping this isn't an indication of what I have to look forward to if I try to stop taking this med.

Diana Spechler completed tapering off 3 drugs -- final installment in this series here http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/07/27/10-things-id-tell-my-former-medicated-self/

10 Things I’d Tell My Former (Medicated) Self

2. You might need to taper more gradually than your doctor thinks. Reduce one medication at a time, just a sliver, every couple of weeks at the most. Be gentle. For example, if you’re planning to cut your benzo on a Friday night, but you’re still having withdrawal symptoms from your last cut, or you see the aftermath of yet another shooting on the news, take your usual dose. You can always cut on Monday. Or next Monday. Or the next. It will take you seven months to get off of three drugs. That’s fine. That’s good. You got this. Mid-taper, you can always go back to your previous dose. Medicate if that’s what helps you make it through a day without hiding in the bathroom. The goal is to feel O.K., not to prove that you are O.K. without meds.

3. There will be a period of hell for two to three days after each cut — dizziness, nausea, panic attacks, headaches, crying jags, strange symptoms like aching teeth. Some people experience extreme symptoms for months. For some people, the withdrawal proves impossible. You will be one of the lucky ones: Your teeth will stop aching. Your panic will subside. You won’t faint or vomit even once.
