Fresh's Fractured Fairytale: How Much Can a Koala Bear?

Great news!

I suffer from depression, anxiety, pure-o ocd, and panic attacks since 2004. Been on multiple different psychiatric drugs since 2006. Never had a significant WD problem before, only brain zaps for a month and then I'd be fine...............Been on Cipralex (escitalopram) 15 mg and Fluanxol (flupentixol) 1 mg since Sep 2014. Stopped taking the Cipralex after a fast 20-day taper.Took the last 5 mg Cipralex on Feb 5th, 2015. Then took Seroxat (paroxetine) 10 mg for a week, and stopped it too. Severe WD started suddenly on Feb 16th. RI 5 mg Cipralex on Feb 18th, 2015. RI worked and was relatively stable for a while................April 7 - decreased Fluanxol from 1 mg to 0.5 mg and took it at this dose for a week. - BIG MISTAKE; April 13 - WD starts creeping in; April 14 - RI full dose of Fluanxol 1 mg => severe muscle twitching and jerking when trying to relax and fall asleep, overwhelming sense of doom, dread, terror, and horror, insomnia, hoping to stabilize.
Tried doing a 10% cut off Fluanxol in the end of May for a few days, but quickly updosed to full dose because the twitching returned.
Experiencing waves and windows in the following months.
Unsuccessful brief taper attempt of Fluanxol by 5% on November 1st. Symptoms hit the next day. Too scared to continue tapering, reinstate full dose.
Severe crash in November after stupidly trying a barbiturate on November 9th. Grave mistake. Sense of unshakable inescapable internal torture, like my soul is in hell being tortured, terror/horror/dread/doom (probably akathisia?) that gets especially bad when trying to relax and fall asleep, muscles twitch, jerk and move on their own, shaking, insomnia, can't eat, confusion, disorientation, brain not working normally. Never felt so bad in my entire life. Never experiment with other meds while in WD! Praying to God I stabilize and get back to my baseline.
December - things getting even worse.

January - unbearable suffering

2000 - sertraline for job anxiety low confidence (17 years old) ..which turned the next 16 years into nightmare!

On/off sertraline severe withdrawals every time. 2014 - felt better as reduced dose of sertraline no more inner restlessness. Doctor rushed off again. Hit severe withdrawal. Lost the little I had in life. Couldn't get stable again on 12.5mg. Was switched to prozac. Had severe reaction to prozac..came off in November 2015 at 6mg as felt more confused and damaged on it..Even more withdrawal ..rage, depression, dyphoria, near constant suicidal ideation, self harm impulses, doom, concrete block in head, unable to do much of anything with this feeling in head..went back on 6mg of sertraline to see if would alleviate anything. It didn't..reduced from December to June 2016 came off at 2.5mg sertraline as was hospitalised for the severe rage, suicidal impulses, and put on 50mg lofepramine which in 2nd week reduced all symptoms but gave insomnia which still have..psych stopped lofepramine cold turkey..no increased withdrawal symptoms new symptoms from lofepramine except persistant insomnia which has as side effect.

Taking Ativan for 8 months for the severe rage self harm impulses 1-3 times a week (mostly 2 times a week) at .5mg. Two months (I'm unsure exactly when the interdose started to happen) ago interdose withdrawal seemed to happen..2 days I think after the Ativan.

That is wonderful Fresh! It is just not predictable, is it? So happy for you, enjoy!  :)

7/1/2018 Finally feeling like myself again, success!!! Praise God! Even with the stress of relocating recently, I am feeling pretty good most of the time now. Granted, I eat healthy, I exercise, I don't drink caffeine or alcohol and I try hard find a healthy balance of quiet and social times. Hang in there and keep the faith, you can do it too!

Hi Fresh, is there more info on SA about CES? I did a couple of quick searches and didn't find anything. I was just curious if anyone else has tried it, and also if there was more information here that I haven't seen. I looked online and didn't find a ton of information, seems like maybe its relatively new?

Hi Pre , there's a thread in Symptoms and Self Care called "Alpha-Stim , Fisher Wallace . . . etc"  about different devices.

Try googling Cranial Electro Stimulation Therapy , there's a ton of info about CES being used for pain , anxiety , depression , insomnia and addiction.

Wikipedia sums it up.  I can find some specific sites for you in the next day or so if you like.

It's been around since 1949 , but like many alternate therapies there's a lot of anecdotal evidence supporting it , and only a few research studies.

I initially got the idea from "bloodrush" , who was given it in the Ukraine and swore it cured him of w/d symptoms in 3 weeks.

1987-1997 pertofran , prothiaden , Prozac 1997-2002 Zoloft 2002-2004 effexor 2004-2010 Lexapro 40mg

2010-2012Cymbalta 120mg

Sept. 2012 -decreased 90mg in 6months. Care taken over by Dr Lucire in March 2013 , decreased last 30mg at 2mg per week over 3 months. July 21 , 2013- last dose of Cymbalta

Protracted withdrawal syndrome kicked in badly Jan.2014 Unrelenting akathisia until May 2014. Voluntary hosp. admission. Cocktail of Seroquel, Ativan and mirtazapine and I was well enough to go home after 14 days. Stopped all hosp. meds in next few months.

July 2014 felt v.depressed - couldn't stop crying. Started pristiq 50mg. Felt improvement within days and continued to improve, so stayed on 50mg for 8 months.

Began taper 28 Feb. 2015. Pristiq 50mg down to 45mg. Had one month of w/d symptoms. Started CES therapy in March. No w/d symptoms down to 30mg.

October 2015 , taking 25mg Pristiq. Capsules compounded with slow-release additive.

March 2016 , 21mg

Hi Ang ,  CES is Cranial Electro Stimulation therapy.

It works by sending micro-currents of electrical frequencies across your brain via clips on your earlobes.  I'm using a Sota Bio Tuner.

Thanks for the good wishes Cali.   Thinking of you too  :P.

I've been using the energy/concentration frequencies since yesterday , instead of just the relaxing frequencies.  No afternoon nap required yesterday or today.

Considering as sleeping too much has been one of my major complaints , this is a major improvement.

Hi Fresh just popped in to say delightful version of 'modern major general' . So sorry you have had to go through so much.

Hey this CES sounds intriguing. Do keep us updated.

Do you think CES has a placebo effect? ok i am just playing devils advocate. Wow no need for an avo nap and no wdl symptoms.... an improvement is an improvement right. I have slept an obscene amount in wdl. I have seen it as a healing time though and not something to feel bad about. The body needs what it needs.

Do you think CES and acupuncture are similar....302Z had acupuncture and now says is free of wdl symptoms.

Wouldnt running electricity through the cns be activating yet arent we trying to calm the cns?

Youve just gained another 'follow-er'

Glad that Koala isnt having to bear so much!

URGENT REQUEST Please consider submitting  for the petition on Prescribed Drug Dependence and Withdrawal currently awaiting its third consideration at the Scottish Parliament. You don't even have to be from Scotland. By clicking on the link below you can read some of the previous submissions but be warned many of them are quite harrowing.

Please tell them about your problems taking and withdrawing from antidepressants and/or benzos.

Send by email to petitions@parliament.scot and quote PE01651 in the subject heading. Keep to a maximum of 3 sides of A4 and you can't name for legal reasons any doctor you have consulted. Tell them if you wish to remain anonymous. We need the numbers to help convince the committee members we are not isolated cases. You have until mid February. Thank you

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

Thanks for your support @ Tilly , cali , L&L, BB , prestorb and Ali   :) .

Nz11 , I appreciate your comments.  Let me respond:

You have fabulous musical appreciation (lol).    I'm thinking of adding a few more verses and recording it for youtube.  I think I'll call it "I am The Sorry Product of a Modern Pharmaceutical" , and pop in a few meds that didn't quite make it in the first edition.

It's a push to include digesic , prednisone , symbicort , naprosyn , nexium , atrovent etc

Verse 1 will be something like this . . .

I am the sorry product of a modern pharmaceutical

In matters of their long-term use with damage irrefutable

They say "antidepressant" but they're just not therapeutical

So if you're anxious or depressed please try something more suitable

I don't think CES and acupuncture work the same way.  I had 11 weekly acupuncture sessions from August 2014 , and the best thing I noticed was the sense of achievement I got from attending the appointment.  It took months after that before I felt I was stable.

Electronic circuits are not something I'm familiar with , but when I think of hearts being re-started with volts of electricity , and the many personal accounts of how ECT therapy ( yes , I know this is controversial) helped some people , I'm not averse to trying currents  1/400th of ECT voltage.

I did actually have the same fear you mentioned about activating my brain too much , so for the first 3 weeks I only used the relaxing and Schuman frequencies , not the ones for additional concentration and clarity.

Last weekend I found out that CES hasn't made me bulletproof (yet).    I had 2 glasses of wine over a 3 hour period (at a very enjoyable fondue party I might add) , and 2 hours after I got home my feet started burning.   I haven't had this for almost a year , and can only attribute it to the wine.  I've been pretty wiped out since then , today is my first good day.

All the usual symptoms , but just a tiny sprinkling . . . hots and colds , excessive sleeping , brain just not "with it" , increased peequency (frequency of pee-ing) , off my food , and as a consequence , mood flat and sad.  Yukko , such a relief to feel better today.    Still , I never did get any symptoms following my last decrease on April 15.

So it's plod, plod , do what i can , and maintain the faith.

My Koala is light today.

:)

Glad your feeling better today xxx

Nightmare that could have been avoided!

None of the published articles shed light on what ssri's ... actually do or what their hazards might be. Healy 2013.

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

I couldn't help myself either Fresh...

I'm another victim of this fraud its undeniable

These 'cures' are nothing more than oil from snakes and not reliable

For all the harm that's done it seems that no one is held liable

unlikely things will change while public servants remain buyable

Looking forward to your finished song on youtube.

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

My Introduction Thread

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

This was recorded early in 2015 - Prof Peter Gotzsche from Denmark touring Australia following the publication of his new book

5/02/2016, Started 10% taper, reinstated to 10 mg on 5/11/16:  4/29/2017, Last dose of Paxil (working with holistic psychiatrist, lots of supplements to aid WD):  Primary symptoms: apathy, demotivation, anhedonia, fatigue, stress intolerance, moderate social anxiety

Today i am finally able to cut and paste (lol).   This is irrefutable evidence that I can still learn new skills  :D .

I found an excellent discussion of exactly how CES works , studies it has been used in , and how to build your own device at home.

It is here   -   http://forum.opiophile.org/archive/index.php/t-10076.html

Showdown at the OK Coral tomorrow night - a discussion/information session on depression and suicide , with some of the big-wigs

in traditional service provision (i.e. pharma-cult devotees) on the guest panel.   I'm interested to see how Gordon Parker responds

to Yola Lucire's input.

Fresh, I watched your videos tonight.. I had no idea this had happened to you, and I had no idea what Akathisia was until tonight. Even my dad didn't know what it was, and he's a brilliant man. You, my friend, are a classic staple in history during the "time of antidepressants." I do not know how much older you are than me. I am the OCD/PGAD newcomer to the forum lol.. I've been friendly with Hopefull, Broken, and of course you. I want to thank you for your cautious words, as discovering this syndrome can actually be a reaction from an SSRI, has shook me to my core. I always say to my dad that part of my mind lives in the Twilight Zone, one of his favorite shows when he was a kid, and has passed the tradition of watching these classic stories, to me. Because they weren't just "paranoid-coated" tales, they were lessons to be learned from. Like "Eye of the Beholder" and "Nightmare at 20,000 feet," these stories spooked the viewer, but they also stick with the viewer too.. The Twilight Zone, a "series staple" of it's time. And you, girl, are a representative of that.. An SSRI "staple" story of our time.. Thank you for sharing your story and for your honesty. I'm glad you're doing much better! That's awesome Fresh.. :) Xo

Thankyou  Ash for your comments.   You can understand now why I caution against tapering too quickly.  I wouldn't want anyone

to set themselves up for that sort of illness.  And once it's there , it takes a very long time to go away.

The really good news is that it's been a year of continuous improvements.  Things continue to get easier and better as I'm going down ,

and this gives me great hope for my future.

January 2014 - March 2014 Seroquel.( Quit Cold Turkey).

January2014- Mirtazapine, I was taking 15mg at one stage, reduced to 7.5mg, Pgad reactions to Mirtazapine. Doctor kept increasing it to 37.5mg, until July 2014. No improvement, experiencing panic attacks, on 37.5 mg. I had enough by October 2014. Began tapering.

October 2014- Started tapering Mirtazapine from 37.5mg.

September 2015- Down to 4mg of Mirtazapine. Crashed.

September 16th- Up dosed to 5mg. Held this dose for almost 5 months. Stabilised.

February 2016- Began tapering again. From 5mg to 4.5mg of Mirtazapine. (Rocking the boat, again)! Lol. :(
