Jlynn: Paxil withdrawal panic attacks

Have you stopped taking the Flonase? It could take a couple of weeks for the side effects to subside. The fact that you didn't experience this until 40 days into your drop makes me think this has more to do with the Flonase throwing you into a wave. Check out these reviews, the symptoms sound similar to what you have been going through:

I have totally stopped the Flonase for about 4 days now. I can't even believe what I am reading on that site! None of those symptoms are listed in their BS information about Flonase in the pharmacy paperwork or the websites. The sad thing is I used to take Claritin and had so many problems when I had my bad withdrawal period last year that they put me on Flonase. I took it all last summer when stabilized and then stopped when the allergies went away. So I figured it was safe to take again but I am tapering now so I guess not! Thanks ladybug for the information. Wonder how long it will take for my body to purge the Flonase if that is the issue and calm down? Ugh!!!

40 years old and have been on 20 mg of Paxil for the last 19 years. Multiple unsuccessful attempts to quit over the years.01/2015 Was tapering using liquid Paxil. MD has prescribed 1 ml = 2mg taper every two weeks or once withdrawal symptoms at that dose subside. Reduced from 20 to 10 mg using this method and at 10 mg severe withdrawal set in. 1.5 months of pure hell. Found SA, learned what was happening, and reinstated to 20 mg. This is why so many of us are wary of taking drugs/supplements because you just never know how you are going to react to something in WD. If you do have to take something, it's good to start with the smallest dose possible to see how well you tolerate it. But it looks like some people who have never even been on meds are having issues with Flonase.

I read on another site that someone said it took a couple of weeks from the side effects from Flonase to settle down and someone on the site I linked you said a few days so hopefully not too long! Sounds like you're doing all you can to help settle your system by resting, etc. This is just a bump in the road, you will be back to your old self soon enough. If your allergies are that bad hopefully you can find something that doesn't cause all these issues. I think Brass mentioned one he hasn't had issues with.

Today is a little better. Still having insomnia and during the day I feel like I need to keep moving to keep the symptoms down. I can sit and be calm if I need to but prefer to be moving. When I sit that is when I notice the anxiety and panic setting in. Most of my emotional symptoms now seem to be about whether or not I am going to have more symptoms lol. My brain playing tricks on me really. I am working on mindfulness and acceptance as I have seen others say it is very important to do during withdrawal. What is really bothering me right now is the physical symptoms and the insomnia. Dizziness is still pretty severe and my stomach is still acting up. I have little to no appetite and when I do manage to get a meal shake or mild food down my stomach starts to hurt and before long I am in the bathroom.

I have been taking a probiotic but I am wondering if it would be okay to take something like Pepto or an anti-diarrhea tablet or if I should just wait it out?

Since you are likely not experiencing diarrhea due to a stomach bug or food poisoning type issue I think it would be ok to take something to curb it a bit. I know probiotics are supposed to help diarrhea but I found they actually gave me stomach issues which is weird. It's not uncommon to experience diarrhea when you just start taking them. Other people take probiotics without any issues though, and I know I was able to tolerate some better than others. Maybe you can try yogurt instead of pills until you start to feel better and then you can try to incorporate a daily probiotic?

I've also had experience with those meal shakes so I know they can cause stomach issues too! If I ever drank them too fast I instantly had to run to the restroom. So if you do have them it's better to sip them over a period of time. I actually came to like the vanilla flavor and they really helped when I had zero appetite.

Google "natural treatments for diarrhea". My standard is to grate an apple , and wait till it begins to turn

brown. That's the pectin , which is what you want. Take a few spoonfuls 2 or 3 times a day.

Feeling a little better today. Slept a few hours, woke up, but was able to get back to sleep for a couple more hours. Had pretty upset stomach when I got out of bed but also felt a little hungry. My main issues today are dizziness and I feel a little anxious. Kind of like an internal tenseness and tingling. I hope this means I am getting though this wave but hard to be optimistic about it.

One thing I have noticed over the last few days is overwhelming feelings of sadness. Having trouble seeing the good in anything right now.

Update:

Most of the emotional symptoms like , anxious and panic have subsided significantly. I did sleep pretty well last night which is a huge change from recently. My appetite is a little better. My lingering problems right now are headache (sharp random pain in my temple area), upset stomach when I wake up and right after I eat.

The biggest problem is still the dizziness. I feel super dizzy in my frontal lobe and today it has been pretty significant. Yesterday I tried a Dramamine to see if that would help and it maybe did a little but not a lot. Anyone have any other things they use to combats WD dizziness?

Still hanging in there so far. The main symptom that remains is the constant dizziness. I have felt a wider range of emotions the last few days so I try and remember this is my brain resetting itself and working though being with less paxil. Stomach is still acting up a bit in the mornings and after I eat but not as bad as it was for sure. I just keep hoping I will wake up one morning and I will have a day where I won't be dizzy. That is driving me nuts.

Symptoms are slowly subsiding now. I am still having intermittent dizziness but it seems to be improving as time passes. A couple days ago I found myself genuinely laughing and finding things funny. On paxil I laughed when it was appropriate because that is what the situation called for but I didn't actually find things funny very often. Yesterday I had a couple episodes of feeling very angry and rage like. They were minor things that caused me to feel very angry very quickly. I have not had that today so hopefully that was just a blip in my brain resetting. I didn't like it at all! On day 54 of this drop and considering dropping a small amount on day 60 and see how I feel but just thinking about it right now.

I feel like I am moving through this wave now. I am feeling much better with just a little bit of dizziness through out the day which is pretty normal for me since I started tapering. It is so hard for me when I go from crazy insomnia to wanting to sleep all the time. That is so disruptive to my life.

I hate that it feels like tapering and withdrawal has taken over my life and will probably be that way for a couple years minimum as I work my way off this drug. It is constant in my daily life and my mind. I worry any little change in how I feel is taking me to a bad wave and I am constantly analyzing my taper and how I feel and what is next. Some days when I am feeling good it is less but other days it is extremely overwhelming.

I am noticing the change in emotions that are coming and going. Happiness, sadness, anger, joy. I get them and notice them and then they seem to go away and something else is there.

It shouldn't be this bad JLynn. Why not try a micro-cut next time? You can do teeny tiny cuts

more often , and the fallout is less of an assault.

See "Micro-taper instead of 5% or 10% decreases" here http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/2878-micro-taper-instead-of-10-or-5-decreases/

I still think your wave was related to the Flonase, but it doesn't hurt to play it safe and try a smaller drop.

Also, I'm still trying to figure out a way to not make WD the focus of my life and I've been doing this for so long. But maybe that's a big part of it. If you find the answer, let me know!

Glad you are feeling better. :)

One of my friends who is really into homeopathy and natural medicines recommended to me taking a good antioxidant for combating my allergies naturally. She recommended one for me and I did a search on the site and while there is limited information from what I can see they seem to safe for tapering and many have had benefits from them. I of course would start them slow and see how I feel.

Anyone have any suggestions or stories of success or reactions?

I have been dizzy since I started this taper and it seems as though it gets better at times I am going to have it forever. Some days better, some days worse. Dropped  to 11 mg  from 12 mg and holding. Getting closer to my goal of 10 mg and then at least a six month hold there.

Is there anyone here that is very knowledgeable about supplements and things like antioxidants I can chat with? I am looking at the ingredients of a couple of natural items that were recommended for my allergies and even though I put them through the search here and the interaction checker, I can't make heads or tails on what they are saying about them. I hate to clog the forums asking about these things. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Hi Jlynn,

We have similar stories. :)

Supplements: I have a bit of experience; I'm not suuuuper knowledgeable, but I can give it a try. Message me if you'd like. :)

2020: After 18+ years (entire adult life) on Paxil, a dangerous doctor-led "taper" in 2015, and four years tapering off the last 1 mg thanks to SA and the Brassmonkey slide,

Found out a few days ago when I went to get my prescriptions refilled that my GP had a falling out with the clinic and is no longer working there. Very abrupt and sounded like they have not even had a chance to notify his patients. They set me up with the newest doctor added to the practice, a DO. I saw him a couple of days ago and after much anxiety about it I was relieved he is on board with keeping the schedule my previous doctor and I had in place and seemed to believe me when I explained the withdrawal I was having to him. He did mention that he has heard that long term use of these poisons ( my word, not his of course) could permanently alter the brain's chemistry and I needed to be prepared to deal with issues I might have that the paxil created and was masking i,e. depression or anxiety. He of course said that could include a small dose of a different anti-depressant (rolling eyes) or therapy and supplements to manage those things. He is going to do some more research and I left him the names of some of the Dr's who are familiar with withdrawal from this site. We agreed the priority is getting off the drug first and then seeing if anything comes after that and what needs to be done.

I took a 1/4 of a recommended dose of OPC-3 antioxidants to try and help allergies yesterday and today. So far no flare ups in withdrawal symptoms I am still dealing with moderate to severe dizziness all the time. That is all that is hanging around right now at this moment. I actually walked into a door frame today because I was so dizzy, ugh.

40 years old and have been on 20 mg of Paxil for the last 19 years. Multiple unsuccessful attempts to quit over the years.01/2015 Was tapering using liquid Paxil. Reduced from 20 to 10 mg using this method and at 10 mg severe withdrawal set in. 1.5 months of pure hell. Found SA, learned what was happening, and reinstated to 20 mg. After a month of severe symptoms recovered with the reinstatement. Fish oil - Multi Vitamin - Pro-biotic, amino-acid/B Vitamin supplement every day. Hi Jlynn,

That is a real bummer about your doctor. Especially since you said that he had weaned himself off an antidepressant

so really understands it.

One of my biggest fears (probably many others share this) is about what I'm going to be like completely off this stuff.

But what your doctor said,

It almost sounds like -- not a scare tactic exactly, bc I doubt he's trying to scare you, but -- extreeeeemely under-informed, misinformed. Because I doubt there is any research on this, and also there are many success stories about people who are

fully healed. So, yes, we don't know 100% about how we'll be off Paxil, but let's worry about it when we get there.  ;)  ;)

I agree he has no clue what he is talking about. I have always been open to healing with natural medicines and other types of therapy. At some point I am going to have to do some sort of CBT or something to learn how to sleep again I am sure. I told him anything tapering this drug was going to give me PTSD. He didn't really respond to that. All that really matters I guess is that he is willing to keep prescribing for me and let me work at my own pace.

Yesterday was one of those days where I felt so bad I wanted to throw in the towel and say screw it, it will just take the pill forever. Made it through tho and hopefully today will be better.

Still fighting the dizzy and a bit overwhelmed with depressive and negative thoughts the last couple of days. I know there is a word for that but my brain is not putting it together. Just emotional and having trouble seeing joy and happiness the last few days. One day at a time.

Neuroemotions? The "doomcloud"? Whatever you call it, you know it's WD and it will pass!

I'm sorry you have to deal with this dizziness. I get it on and off too. Definitely an annoying and sometimes even scary symptom! My mother has been dealing with pretty bad chronic dizziness for a year now and since the doctors can't find anything physical that is causing it they gave her a list of exercises to do daily to help. I think it's supposed to rebalance the fluid in your inner ear or something. I wonder if this would work for WD induced dizziness?

Hi Jlynn,

Sorry, I wish I'd seen this Saturday. Grrrr! Blasted doomcloud. (Ladybug, I love that word.) I had one on Saturday too. What's tricky is when I don't recognize it as a doomcloud and think that "this isn't wd; everything is really awful and it's 'The End.'" Grrrr!

My naturopathic doctor has been working with me on something called "sleep hygiene" -- it's all the things related to winding down and getting the body ready for sleep.

He suggests no screens (tv, computer, whatever) an hour before bed. In bed by 10. A relaxing bedtime routine. Exercise during the day (I know you're good at that).

I try to do that. Am I perfect at it? Ha. I always feel better at night, so I find it frustrating to have to "close down" when I'm finally feeling good.

Are you any better today, Jlynn?

I am sure it is because of the recent drop. Message me any time.

I wish I could take the credit, but the term was coined years ago by our own Songbird. It really is a perfect way to describe it as it is usually something that can descend out of nowhere and then depart just as quickly. And yes when you are under it it's hard to remember what the sun feels like!

Doomcloud is it exactly. Like it follows you hanging over your head ready to release its toxic rain any chance it gets. I am feeling about the same. I think I might be getting some small Windows from time to time but hard to tell since they pass so quickly.

Ladybug I would be interested in knowing if these exercises would help in WD dizziness as well. I think I will do some research on that. Thanks!

My other problem with things like sleep is I work shift work. So my schedule has always been all over the place as it is. Makes working a pre bed habit/pattern almost impossible.

I think I felt a little better today overall. Dizziness was still there of course but I was super busy and that seemed to ease the doom-cloud a little bit. I did find I had moments of depressive thoughts but was able to push them out quickly.

The dizziness seems to be in the frontal lobe of my brain. Happens no matter if I am moving or not. Kind of like vertigo or spinning feeling. That has now been going on for about 6 weeks and seems to be relentless.

Still feeling pretty crummy at this point. Dizziness will not ease it seems. Tried Dramamine again but didn't really see any improvement. I am really getting scared because it is lasting so long and not letting up.

Allergies are also in full swing and nothing I have tried is working. I have been doing sinus rinses, tried a couple of natural suggestions, nada. I feel like I have a full on head cold going on all the time. My doctor told me to take the Flonase half dose. He said since that is what the other Doctor switched me to last year from Claritin during my Taper crash and I didn't have problems then he doesn't feel like I should have problems now. He doesn't think it is causing the dizziness since I have not been taking it for over a month and I am still dizzy as ever.

Emotionally I am all over the board. The last few days have been crying spells. I have to work really hard at not crying at almost everything. Also some mild anger and the doom cloud is still hanging out. At times I just feel absolutely hopeless. Still praying I move through this but after two months it is hard to have hope as I am just exhausted.

Hi Jlynn,

I just read back through the last few pages of your thread and it looks like you were having fairly severe symptoms, lasting quite a while after your cuts from September last year. Then you held for about 3 months and symptoms improved apart from some occasional dizziness. Then when your resumed tapering in January this year, symptoms have been getting progressively worse and lasting longer after each cut.

I'm sorry, I'm unable to do quotes at the moment, but if you read back through your thread you will see the pattern.

I think its time to slow your taper right down, starting with a long hold, perhaps even a small updose.

Some people need to really slow down as the dose gets lower. Possibly making cuts between 1% - 5%.

Please read through:

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

Thanks Petunia!  I am currently on the liquid and tablets and since the liquid is so expensive, even with my insurance I was hoping to get to 10 mg and not have to worry about the liquid during my planned long break but we shall see. I had a good couple of days where my emotions were better and the dizziness was mild at times. I felt about 80% better during that time. Today my allergies flared up and since I am not able to take anything for them I have only felt about 20%. Dizziness is in full force and I feel like I have a head cold. Did all the natural things I have been doing but little relief.

Question for everyone: The last week or so I have had a tic in the muscle in my bicep. It comes every few minutes and last for a minute or so and then goes away for a bit. It is like there is a bounding pulse in my arm and I can actually see it bouncing. It is not painful but annoying. Today I woke up and I have been having the same type of thing in my jaw area near my lips. Anyone know what this is and if it is a withdrawal symptom others have had? Or should I be thinking something else is going on?

Hi Jlynn-- I use to get those all the time in a variety of locations.  It's one of those WD things.  Like you said they come and go.  I'd have them for a week or so then they'd go away for a month then come back.  I'd get them in my left eye all the time.  I figure that it's the nerves trying to sort themselves out.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Thanks Brass! As annoying as they are at least they aren't painful.

Today still full swing dizziness and battling an upset stomach this morning. I know the dizziness should pass as I hold but after two months of constant vertigo and swaying I am just scared and anxious that I will feel this way forever now. I try and stay positive and focus on healing but as everyone knows the longer the symptom lasts the harder it is to see any light. :(
