Noted @brassmonkey; here I sit in a wave after a few drinks on new year's. Have had to hold my quetiapine dose drop, going on an extra three weeks without dropping. Lesson learned I guess.

I´ve been on SSRI:s for 19 years, had an alcohol problem and got sober with AA in 2014. I´m confused now if all this was due to SSRI or if I was (am?) a real alcoholic.

In 2017 I experienced this bizarre thing with increased craving and alcohol intolerance in combination with SSRI. This was after I went to the ER after an updose of Zoloft gone bad. I had a really bad reaction to the Zoloft but the doctors´wouldn´t recognize this, said it was my original anxiety breaking through. So they increased the dose from 75 to 100 mg. A couple of weeks after this I had another even worse reaction and suddenly I had overwhelming cravings to drink/self medicate with alcohol. So I drank a few beers but stopped almost immediately (I didn´t even get drunk), it didn´t get me much relief and then I could not sleep for the entire night. Although I didn´t drank much it set off a bad wave of symptoms with panic attacks and horrble anxiety that lasted for months, it seems my CNS was sensitized from the drug changes and then adding alcohol to that put me in a very bad place.

This episode does not seem to fit the picture of "relapse" in drinking though, were as people who drink after years of sobriety seem to drink even more during a relapse. This is also very confusing because I can´t really identify anymore with the label "alcoholic", which means that if I start drinking I can´t stop and I feel almpost embarrased that this small amount of alcohol could have such devastating consequences...or was it the meds?

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Is this alcoholism or just drug induced?

2000-2008 Citalopram 20-40 mg, May 2008 switched from Citalopram to Sertraline/Zoloft 50 mg, 100 mg at most. 2000-2013 Benzos on and off (Diazepam, Xanax, Oxazepam), quit due to overuse. Quit alcohol February 2014.

Jan - 17 Theralene, Nozinan and Promethazine as needed for sleep/anxiety. Quit the Nozinan immediately because of feeling hungover

June -17: Dropped Sertraline by myself from 50mg to 25mg.  Aug -17: reinstated Sertraline to 50mg, after 3 days increased to 75mg.

Sep -17: Adverse reaction/panic attack and doctors increased Sertraline to 100mg. Oct -17: tapered to 75mg by myself because of side effects

Dec-17: Doctor added Mirtazapine, 15mg for two weeks, then 30mg.

Feb 10 -18: Dropped Sertraline (doctor´s suggestion) to 50 mg because of emotional numbness

March 8 -18 Reinstated (with doctor´s consent) to 75 mg because of panic attacks/withdrawal syndrom

Tapering Mirtazapine: Starting dose 30 mg, 2018 May 29 22,5 mg, August 23 19,1 mg, October 8 15 mg, October 28 11 mg, November 26 7,5 mg

Thank for the links! This is very interesting and I suspect this is one explanation for my binge drinking 5-6 years ago.

Hi tinker-- Drinking while taking ADs is not a good idea.  Been there, done that, almost destroyed my life.  There are several things to keep in mind, the first as CC pointed out is the interaction between the drug and alcohol.  Frequently the drug will intensify the effects of the alcohol while the alcohol can decrease the effectiveness of the drug.  The drug can mask the negative effects of alcohol such as the hangover or the realization that you've had too much.  The drugs also lower ones inhibitions and dull ones common sense leading to risky activities and binging.  And the big one is that many of these drugs actually increase a persons craving for alcohol to an extreme extent, making it very easy to consume way more than what is healthy or polite.

Once a person is tapering off of these drugs and is having WD symptoms the whole thing can switch very quickly. To the point that one can of beer or glass of wine can give you the hangover from h*** for several weeks and set off a bad wave of WD symptoms.  We have a large number of members that have experienced this first hand.

So after all of that the short answer is: Don't do it.

I guess the whole thing can switch if you have big dose changes also? One major updose caused cravings for me but I could not tolerate alcohol when I tried to drink... So I got the cravings without the relief.

Unfortunately, there does not appear to be a clear answer. I just know that alcohol works on the GABA receptors, so it has an influence on neurotransmitters and/or their activity. I am steering completely clear of alcohol during my taper, which is planned for the next few years. I will make an exception for a wedding or a milestone birthday, but even there I will not get drunk. Drinking has sent me into an anxiety spiral recently (New Years) so I'm not touching it for a while.

7 months of prescribed polypharmacy in 2015-2016, including several classes of psych meds.

1st attempt at taper was too fast. 2nd attempt is underway.

1 Mar 2018: 37.5 mg paroxetine, 150 mg lamotrigine, 300 mg quetiapine

1 Oct 2020: 30 mg paroxetine, 150 mg lamotrigine, 37.5 mg quetiapine

15 May 2022: 25 mg paroxetine, 150 mg lamotrigine, 0 mg quetiapine

11 Jan 2024: 20 mg paroxetine, 118.75 mg lamotrigine

Supplements: Iron, Vit D magnesium glycinate, omega 3

Can eating food cooked with beer have an affect on symptoms?  I may have eaten some steak that was grilled with a little bit of beer.  I feel like I’m back in acute, but was also starting to feel a decline a few weeks prior to this incident.  I’m not sure what caused it, or if it’s just a wave.

Lexapro 1/17 - 3/17 10 mg.  Switched to Elavil 3/27/17 10 mg

Upped to 20 mg June 5, 2017 3 days, back down to 10mg June 8

Up again to 20 mg June 12, 2017 4 days, back down to 10 June 16

9/17 dropped to 9.5 mg

11/17 dropped to 9.3mg

2/18/17 dropped to 8.8 mg

February 14/2018 Adverse reaction to zofran pill at clinic

I'm a bit late to this party, but I have wondered the same thing. I deliberately avoided Xmas pudding with alcohol at Christmas because I just wasn't sure about the same thing. I also like to make my own sauerkraut, which undergoes a fermentation process, and I'm not even sure that's safe....anyone have any idea?

January 2008 to April 2015 Citalopram 20mg to 5mg, reducing in 50 per cent leaps. Jumped off at 5mg

March 2016 used MDMA triggered setback

April 2016 Citalopram 10mg October 2016 cut to 5mg, May 2017 cut to 2.5mg

May 2018 used MDMA triggered setback

June 2018 Citalopram 2.5mg up to 10mg, then back to 5mg

July/ August 2018 7.5mg, then 10mg

June 2019 updosed to 20mg Citalopram

August 2019 cold switch to Venlafaxine 75mg XR

Supplements; 1100mg fish oil daily; also 100mg Magnesium Glycinate. Tried Vagifem 10mcg from mid May 2021 to mid June 2021; caused depression, so stopped.

Please see:

Does Alcohol Evaporate from Cooking Wine?

Quote

As a reference, here's a helpful rule of thumb: After 30 minutes of cooking, alcohol content decreases by 10 percent with each successive half-hour of cooking, up to 2 hours. That means it takes 30 minutes to boil alcohol down to 35 percent and you can lower that to 25 percent with an hour of cooking. Two hours gets you down to 10 percent.

It may be wise to avoid foods cooked with alcohol until you know your nervous system is strong enough to handle it, just to be safe. Even small amounts of alcohol can cause problems for someone with a destabilized nervous system. So it really depends where you're at in your healing.

My experience says not safe but depends on quantity and stage of WD. I got buzzed from fresh squeezed orange juice over the summer which apparently can have some alcohol because it doesn't have preservatives. This one is sold in stores so not actually squeezed at home so it ends up fermented. Granted I drank a liter so less might be ok.

Alcohol seems to be a set back for many.

Regarding sauerkraut I don't think that fermentation results in alcohol but worth checking.

i had really horrible reactions to psych drugs and have recovered a lot, I have eaten both raw and cooked sauerkraut and nothing dire has happened to me.  May still not be the best idea, as in maybe it's having some small negative effect but I haven't say gotten akathisia again or anything major from doing that.

Someone in the midst of the worst of withdrawal though may have a harder time than I did.

Also note if you are going to avoid all alcohol, there's a bit in some toothpastes as someone here mentioned before, also you will want to avoid Kombucha too (if you would normally drink it.)

Thanks @UnfoldingSky and @Onmyway.

I'm totally avoidin alcoholic drinks, have stopped making water kefir as I was doing the second ferment with fruit and it even started to taste a bit alcoholic.

Alcohol in toothpaste is a bit of a surprise!

I think I may avoid the sauerkraut for now. I ate some on Sunday, had really bad anxiety on Monday. Now, there may be no link whatesoever as I'm also going through a stressful period and waves at the moment, but I'm also a bit concerned about histamine intolerance. Just for the sake of caution, I think I'm gonna lay off it at the moment.

After reading your enlightening posts i understood that alcohol is very bad for withdrawal and i didnt have any drink for 5 months and i continue but I want to ask a question. During the first month of withdrawal i didn't know I had withdrawal and I drank several times. i even got drunk a few times. My symptoms have improved a lot and now in the seventh month I'm starting to feel more like myself but I'm afraid that the alcohol I drank in the beginning permanently damaged me and I will not recover fully? Is this possible or does alcohol just slows down the process of recovery? Please answer me I am stressing myself out over this..Thanks in advance

No reason to think permanent damage if you're already getting better. Alcohol destabilizes further an already destabilized system. It will restabilize so not to worry but I'd stay away from it for a very long time.

Alcohol cravings

Did anyone find that alcohol cravings increased or even went off the charts while on ADs? An interesting article on Risk.org highlights this situation and many people commented that they had the same reaction.

Not sure how you are doing now but if the alcohol was cooked it changes the nature of the alcohol so it should be fine.

This is a known effect of a number of antidepressants.  There have been cases of people who didn't drink starting the drugs, who then go on to become serious alcoholics and then "coincidentally" when they finally get off the pills, they no longer have any cravings for alcohol at all.

I was never big into drinking I got weird effects if  I mixed enough alcohol with Celexa.  My face would break out in tiny broken blood vessels.  The first time it happened I woke up and saw my face and I was sure it was going to be stuck like that lol

Kindler, alcohol is generally not a good idea in withdrawal and has been known to set people back. It really is best not to experiment with it but up to you. I've had severe dizziness from tiny amounts of alcohol in WD. Be well :)

Please note there are 2 related topics:

Alcohol and Beer

Wanted to share an experience I have/had.  I searched for others sharing a similar experience but couldn’t find anything too close so hopefully this is helpful.

After updosing to 6mg per day, I entered into my first extended window.  I had the lowest symptoms on my tracker since the start of my taper in December 2020.  I hadn’t had a sip of alcohol since Feb/March 2020 knowing that it certainly wasn’t helping my anxiety.  On vacation, feeling great in my window, I decided, perhaps against better judgement, to have one beer during a family dinner out.

This single corona made me dizzy about half way through it.  I felt ok after about an hour or two.  The next day, I started to feel a wave coming on.  By mid-morning, I had extreme confusion.  It almost felt cognitively like brain zaps without the actual physical feeling of a zap.  I would ever so briefly forget where I was, what I was talking about or who I was talking to.  It’s happened around the same time every day since (3 days), but is gradually improving.

I understand that this wave could have been coming all along as the window had lasted about 2 weeks, but nonetheless I believe the beer exacerbated or initiated the wave.

anyone have a similar experience?

Yep. Yep yep. If I take even 1 glass of wine with dinner, the next day my anxiety is through the roof. I am recovering pretty nicely so far but even a single drink brings a huge set back. Thankfully the setback didn't last and after a couple days I was back to where I was and keep recovering since. I used to drink alcohol without a problem before this happened, but I guess now it is too much for my sensitized nervous system. So no alcohol for me 😞

My thread: https://www.survivingantidepressants.org/topic/24990-surviving82-my-story-wd-from-antidepressants-please-help/

2016-2017: sertraline for approx. 1.5 years for anxiety and OCD outbreak following birth of my son (all the way from 2mg to 200mg), rapid tapered from 150mg for about 6 weeks without issues. Approximately 2 years psych drug free.

Nov 2019 - Feb 2020: fluvoxamine to prevent anxiety/OCD outbreak following birth of my daughter. Had to go off due to constant somnolence.

Feb 2020 - Dec 2020: started escitalopram while rapid tapering fluvoxamine. After 9 months decided to get off due to weight gain, rapid tapered from [I think] 15mg for about 6 weeks without immediate issues.

March-April 2021: started excessive strenuous exercise and dieting regimen for weight loss. Was doing great (or so I thought) for 3 weeks until early April 2021 when out of nowhere massive panic attacks, other dysautonomia symptoms. AWFUL CRASH.

Mid-April 2021: fluoxetine 10mg for 1 week then 20mg for 1 week. Massive side effects, suicidality. Was told to go CT. Side effects gradually started resolving.

Mid-Late May 2021: sertraline for 11 days, fine at low doses but same side effects as prozac at 25 to 50mg. Was told to either drop CT or hold at 1/4 of a 25mg pill.

April-May 2021: trazodone 50mg PRN for sleep. Do not take every day, the only side effect I noticed is dry mouth.

June 8, 2021: stopped all psych meds. Truing to trust that with God's help, my body will heal on its own.

September 9, 2021: reinstated escitalopram 1mg. Gradually worked up to 2.5mg by September 30. Reinstatement seems to be helping!

Other: Hashimoto thyroiditis for 11 years (on levothyroxine varying doses, between 88mcg and 125mcg), history of anxiety/GAD including health anxiety, OCD. History of autonomic dysfunction (migraines, vasovagal episodes).

I've found that any kind of stress brings on waves. Hypothetically, I think it's the nervous system struggling to remember how to tolerate stress and distress without the drugs.

I know for me, owing to the depressive effects of alcohol, I have to be very careful with it to avoid waves.

Keep in mind that alcohol is a serotonergic, among other things, so it's not surprising if this trips up your nervous system.

2014-2015. Paxil

2015-2021. Switched to Welbutrin

2016-2018. Added Effexor

2018. Stopped Effexor. Added Cymbalta for about 1 month

2018-2020. Replaced Cymbalta with Pristiq 50mg

October 2020. Stopped the Pristiq

December 2020 - Added 25mg Zoloft to try and bridge the withdrawal

March 2021 - Reduced Zoloft to half doses (About 12.5mg). Started medical cannabis, 5mg (edibles) 2-3x a day as needed.

May 17, 2021 - Discontinued Zoloft

September 2021. Reduced Welbutrin from 300mg to 150mg

January 2022. Stopped the Welbutrin. Currently only taking the medical cannabis.

Thanks for the replies.  Things have been very different during this post beer wave.  I usually get brain zaps about a week after a drop, they last for about 3 days to a week and then disappear until the next drop.  Instead, I am about a month into a drop and have been getting zaps pretty frequently as well as a bit of mania.  Really strange.

Needless to say, alcohol is not in my future for a while.

In my withdrawal I found out the tough way that alcohol would trigger a wave. I kept reducing it down until I had to admit even one would trigger a 2 week intensive agitated wave with off the scale anxiety.

Just the weekend for a friend's 40th I drank myself silly with no anxiety the next day. My hangovers are nearly non existent as well, they were so bad on Paroxetine.

Best knocking it on the head until clear of withdrawal. It also saves you a lot of money and the waistline!

April 2007 -  Seroxat 20mg

August 2008 - Cold Turkey

August 2009 - Cold Turkey

November 2009 - Reinstatement adverse reaction akathesia/suicidal/anxiety

March 2011 - Start taper

November 2012 - Crash badly at 1.25mg akathesia/suicidal/extreme anxiety

January 2013 - 5mg Seroxat, 300mg  Lyrica

April 2017 - Successfully get off Seroxat with taper followed by 4 month of withdrawal

January 2018 - Start with constant urinary urge/pain/burning/genital sensations 2 week after anxiety/akathesia ends

January 2019 - Started reducing Lyrica as I suspect it's causing frequent urination, tinnitus, fatigue, brain fog and mental decline.

December 2019 - Off all pysch meds

@Ariel I’m probably the worst I’ve felt overall. However amazingly I’ve not felt the need to have a drink in weeks.  I’ve discovered there are some nice alcohol free beers out there so I’m enjoying those. The cold water thing is still something I’m doing. I don’t know if it’s helping majorly but I do feel strangely addicted to it. It’s a pleasure pain thing.

I’m probably the worst I’ve felt overall.

Hi Kat,

Very sorry to hear you're feeling at your worst. We have to keep reminding ourselves that healing is happening even when we feel right sh*te.

Great to hear you're taking care of yourself with no alcohol and lots of cold water. This is serving you well, I'm sure. Give yourself lots of credit for your efforts. I trust they will pay off, and that your brain and nervous system are already rewarding you.

It always helps to hear when someone is rocking the non-drug coping techniques and self-love. Thanks for the inspiration!
