Intravenous supplements

Supplements have been a big part of my life for over three decades and still are - in terms of self-use and tons of research, so this topic is right up my alley so to speak. Going on meds of any kind was kind of a sacrilegious experience and contributes to my discomfort on them. This goes way back before I got stuck on the two psych meds going through a bad patch last year which I am microtapering off of, one at a time (see my signature below).

Of course the gold standard ultimate vitamin C to take would be IVC (10g or more of slow-drip buffered intravenous ascorbic acid) that many cancer patients self-administer, but obviously this is probably logistically impractical for most of us. At the end of the video, he shows how it's done:

A close second in terms of bioavailability is liposomal ascorbic acid which can be purchased OTC and taken orally. I take this one which also contains ALA : https://www.researchednutritionals.com/store/item.cfm?code=CRN141

These forms of ascorbate are far superior anything else oral which in orthomolecular doses produce loose stools, etc. unless you do the bowel tolerance protocol as suggest by the late Dr. Robert Cathcart, M.D. which nebver really worked for me because I would never reach BT (bowel tolerance) after about 6-7g.

It would be interesting to see if the effects of hypercortisolemia from detox w/d side fx from various SSRIs, benzos, opiates, etc. would be better ameliorated with these other types of administration and/or forms as opposed to just plain oral ascorbic acid. I do inject Magnesium Sulfate IM up to 1g and have tried other nutrient injectables. Again, there is no substitution in terms of serum, tissue, and cellular uptake when you're doing injectables vs. oral. May be something to consider for those willing and brave enough to do injections.

MEDS SUMMARY:

1) Valium: 10mg avg prn from 09-06-14 to 10-20-14
2) Xanax: 0.75mg avg prn from from 09-19-14 to 10-16-14

5) Lamictal: 100mg q.d. from 10-23-14 to 12-04-14; started tapering 12-05-14, 25mg every 2 weeks; destabilized 01-15-14; reinstated 01-22-15 at 25mg q.d. from 01-24-15 to 02-19-15; cut approx. 3-4mg every 5-10 days until 03-22-15, then cut 2mg every 5-6 days until 05-12-15; holding at 4mg q.d. from 05-13-15 to present.
Detailed Analysis - Lamictal history: https://app.box.com/s/rnermghleue9aemyhd57l1a00gsk2i4u

6) Also taking meds for blood pressure (Coreg @ 6.25mg b.i.d. and Losartan @ 50mg b.i.d.) + for blood clot I had back in 2012 (Xarelto @ 10mg) + for hypothyroidism (Armour Thyroid @ 1grain q.d.)

Practically, how do you do injected magnesium? Sarah Myhill strongly recommends using as much SQ as you can take, but I don't know how the script for home use needs to be written and filled. She says take all you can stand, what do you think? Have you looked at all at mg threonate?

1st round Prozac 1989/90, clear depression symptoms. 2nd round Prozac started 1999 when admitted to dr. I was tired. Prozac pooped out, switch to Cymbalta 3/2006. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder due to mania 6/2006--then I was taken abruptly off Cymbalta and didn't know I had SSRI withdrawal. Lots of meds for my intractable "bipolar" symptoms.

Zyprexa started about 9/06, mostly 5mg. Tapered 4/12 through12/29/12

Wellbutrin. XL 300 mg started 1/07, tapered 1/18/13 through 7/8/13

Oxazepam mostly continuously since 6/06, 30mg since 12/12, tapered 1.17.14 through 8.26.15

11/06 Lithium 600mg twice daily, 2.2.14 400mg TID DIY liquid, 2.12.14 1150mg, 3.2.14 1100mg, 3.18.14 1075mg, 4/14 updose to 1100mg, 6.1.14 900 mg capsules 7.8.14 810mg, 8.17.14 725mg, 8.24.24 700mg...10.22.14 487.5mg, 3.9.15 475mg, 4.1.15 462.5mg 4.21.15 450mg 8.11.15 375mg, 11.28.15 362.5mg, back to 375mg four days later, 3.4.16 updose to 475 (too much going on to risk trouble)

9/4/13 Toprol-XL 25mg daily for sudden hypertension, tapered 11.12.13 through 5.3.14, last 10 days or so switched to atenolol

7.4.14 Started Walsh Protocol

I inject IM. SQ would not work for Mg I don't think; too painful. I take Mg threonate, malate, glycinate, orotate, taurate orally - not all at once and every day but as needed. Once referred to as vitamin B-8, inositol shows tremendous promise in treating psychiatric conditions associated with elevated cortisol levels, including depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders. I use a product called Cenitol which contains grams doses of inositol with some Mg glycinate: http://www.metagenics.com/mp/products/cenitol. I mix it with a special Vitamin C product called Vitality C: http://www.888vitality.com/product/A1000-VITALITYC/Vitality-C-200-grams/ which is another one of the better oral C sources.

I buy inositol powder in 16 oz. containers. Enough said :). Do you buy the injectable mag at a regular pharmacy? Do you think the effects of mg threonate are any different?

I have a scrip for the Mg sulfate. I really can't tell if the threonate works any differently than the other forms.  http://www.drperlmutter.com/magnesium-threonate-powers-brain/

With a scrip I would think so. If not, then pharmacy can order it. It's pretty common. Since they fill testosterone scrips, there should be no problem.

MEDS SUMMARY:

1) Valium: 10mg avg prn from 09-06-14 to 10-20-14

Thanks for all the info. This http://drsircus.com/medicine/magnesium/warnings-contraindications. says lithium therapy is one of the rare instances where it is easy to get too much magnesium, so I'm not going to pursue injected mg, but I really appreciate what you have shared. Interestingly, this article says there is a big interaction between magnesium and gabapentin. Now, back to normal cortisol programming....

Best thing - at least in my case - is to get off all these meds - except for maybe one for hypertension (as long as it doesn't cause interactions) - and go back to using natural means. Interactions is what got me into this mess in the first place. I personally think meds and supps are like a match and a dynamite stick. The drug/nutrient online checkers and doctors' knowledge is only the tip of the iceberg. There is still way too much unknown out there which raises the risk of untoward effects that much higher. I stayed natural all my life and did ok. It wasn't until I threw meds into the mix last year that I got into trouble and so here I am, slowly trying to crawl my way out of the rabbit hole. I refuse to let meds take the upper hand over taking supps that I know have little or no side effects and can only help.

I was looking at lithium orotate which is available OTC for helping rebuilding/protecting GABA receptors during/post benzo taper. I wonder if those same interactions would apply?

You would be on a lower dose, so less risk, but psycheducation.org recommends even orotate users have their kidney function monitored, so probably some tiny thyroid risk as well. Who knows about magnesium. Orotate crosses the BBB easier, so it requires less. I had a bad experience with a beta-blocker, so I understand exactly what you're talking about!

Wellbutrin. XL 300 mg started 1/07, tapered 1/18/13 through 7/8/13

Oxazepam mostly continuously since 6/06, 30mg since 12/12, tapered 1.17.14 through 8.26.15

9/4/13 Toprol-XL 25mg daily for sudden hypertension, tapered 11.12.13 through 5.3.14, last 10 days or so switched to atenolol

7.4.14 Started Walsh Protocol

You would be on a lower dose, so less risk, but psycheducation.org recommends even orotate users have their kidney function monitored, so probably some tiny thyroid risk as well. Who knows about magnesium. Orotate crosses the BBB easier, so it requires less. I had a bad experience with a beta-blocker, so I understand exactly what you're talking about!

Yes, for me, since I already have hypothyroidism, lithium probably not a good idea. Even nutrients used in supraphysiologic doses essentially become pharmaceuticals, replete with side effects.

What was the beta blocker you were taking that gave you a bad experience?

What were your symptoms & did you have w/d symptoms during your taper? Both of those older class BBs are frought with bad side effect profiles. They also up-regulate the beta receptors, causing increased sympathetic nervous system activity and rebound hypertension and have to be tapered slowly as you know.

I'm on carvedilol which is a third class BB and actually does not have as bad a side effect profile of the older ones and actually has numerous health benefits that older class ones don't have: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22149523

It's antioxidant capacity is1000 times stronger antioxidant than vitamin E, for one. Also, it does NOT up-regulate beta receptors nor block T4-T3 conversion as the older ones do (very important for us thyroid patients). Propanolol is the worst when it comes to this. Realize also that those older BBs cross the blood brain barrier and can affect the CNS (depression & nightmares are common side effects).

I'm sure your doc has a reason for staying on the older class BB (atenolol) as every BB has a different use , but you might want to inquire about carvedilol as a better alternative.

These posts have been moved from the "Reducing cortisol and waking with panic or anxiety" thread into its own topic, please continue this discussion here.

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

My Introduction Thread

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has tried intravenous vitamins? I am having difficulty eating enough food because of digestive problems, and I was thinking about trying this, if things don't improve. Anyone has experience or opinions?

2005-2018: Sertraline 50mg

Jan 2018: Started taper from 50mg

Jun 2018: 25 mg

July 2019: 20 mg. Switched to Microtapering

Spring 2020: Tetanus vaccine and a course of rabies vaccinations.

July 2020: 16 mg. Hold.

During 2020, I was forced to change manufacturers(of generic Sertraline) 4 times due to supplier issues. I didn't write the dates down.

1st Oct&4th Oct 2020: IV drip with Metoclopramide, ranitidine, hyoscine butylbromide in hospital

26 October 2020: 17 mg

1Nov: 16mg

It might be better to start with a blood test to find out if you are deficient in anything.  That way you can target a specific thing, if needed, instead of just throwing everything in and possibly reacting to something.  B vitamins, especially B6, can be activating.  SA recommends only adding 1 thing at a time (ie not a complex).  And also trying a small test dose to see how you react.

If you have intravenous multi vitamin treatment and you react it might be a large reaction and could possibly take some time to get it out of your system and might take a while for you to stabilise.

If it was me I'd be having a blood test and if possible taking oral supplements (introducing only one at a time) to start with.

Thank you ChessieCat. Yes you are right, it could possibly trigger a big reaction. I thought about having a simple one like just Vitamin C, to give me a boost to recover from the lack of food and weight loss. I just don't want to end up in hospital. But I might try the IV Vit C as a very last resort I think. Hopefully I won't need to at all.

I think it would be better to get tested for deficiency first.

Personally I'd avoid them, as if you have an unexpected reaction, it can be quite unpleasant.

To put it bluntly, you'll be getting a mega dose of a chemical that you probably don't need anyway.

I had a Vit B shot a few years ago, and spent the next week climbing the walls with incredibly bad anxiety. Never again.

Oct 2018 - Jun 2020: 10 mg per day generic Escitalopram in pill form.

Jul 2020 - Aug 2020: Switched to 9 mg per day of Cipralex drops to aid tapering.

Sep 2020 - Oct 2020: Taper to 8 mg.

Nov 2020 - Dec 2020: Taper to 7 mg.

Jan 2021 - Feb 2021: Taper to 6 mg.

Mar 2021 - Apr 2021: Taper to 5 mg.

May 2021 - Jun 2021: Taper to 4 mg.

Jul 2021 - Sep 2021: Taper to 3 mg.

Sep 2021 - Jan 2022: Taper to 2 mg.

Intravenous nutrition

Hello! I have lost a lot of weight and am going thru a lot of testing to see why I am not absorbing my food. I was wondering if anyone has had to go on IV’s for nutritional support and if they were ok with it? Thanks!
