Lol you made me laugh I needed that thank you, once again we have similarities, 2weeks ago I went to the doc about my sinuses and I too was given that spray, have been using it daily since 5 sec ago when I read what you wrote and now will no longer use it, at this point I can't afford to be more depressed So took you about 2 months too stabilize on 10mg? God I pray I'm in that time frame as well. Sorry to see your tapering mistake, but at least you caught it!!!

10 years citalopram 30mg- tapered down in December 15/2015- Jan 15/2016 to 20mg for two weeks, ten for one week and five for another week, then stopped, less then two weeks later, sheer hell broke lose with debilitating withdrawal symptoms.

Update-- reinstated 5mg of celexa on feb 5-- within hours noticed immediate difference in WD symptoms-- Holding holding and more holding.

Updose- March 23/16 too 10mg- relieved the harsher head symptoms- current symptoms headaches, dizzy, numbness and tingling in my head.

Benzos- 2015-Ativan on and off for 6 months 2mg- switched to clonazepam nov 2015- 2mg till Jan 2016 Zopiclone 7.5mg nov-dec 2015- was tapered off over 4weeks- Currently in protracted withdrawal. ????????????????????????????????

Update- ended up in the hospital April 18/16 major suicidal ( never had that before) was admitted/ been there ever since, put me back to full dose celexa 30mg no drugs added, IAM FINALLY STABLE AFTER 3 months of tortuous hell. Got a great physiatrist that new all about WD, he will help me taper properly in a couple of months at 5% deductions holding 8 weeks. I never want to relive that hell again.

Udate- stable and holding, doing things slowly is key.

That made me laugh too Dan , thank you! Watch out for the nozzle!

You might want to consider a good long hold anyway. Changing your dose every 2 weeks hasn't given your brain a chance to consolidate the changes. As you know , the site recommends holding for 4-6 weeks at a time. If your method of tapering follows the Brassmonkey method , that involves longer hold at regular intervals too. I'd hate to see you charge along with your taper , then get hit with rebound symptoms after you've finished.

Seeing as you've been bouncing around the 8% window for a couple of weeks , this would be a good time to take a tapering holiday for a couple of months.

2010-2012Cymbalta 120mg

Sept. 2012 -decreased 90mg in 6months. Care taken over by Dr Lucire in March 2013 , decreased last 30mg at 2mg per week over 3 months. July 21 , 2013- last dose of Cymbalta

Protracted withdrawal syndrome kicked in badly Jan.2014 Unrelenting akathisia until May 2014. Voluntary hosp. admission. Cocktail of Seroquel, Ativan and mirtazapine and I was well enough to go home after 14 days. Stopped all hosp. meds in next few months.

July 2014 felt v.depressed - couldn't stop crying. Started pristiq 50mg. Felt improvement within days and continued to improve, so stayed on 50mg for 8 months.

Began taper 28 Feb. 2015. Pristiq 50mg down to 45mg. Had one month of w/d symptoms. Started CES therapy in March. No w/d symptoms down to 30mg.

October 2015 , taking 25mg Pristiq. Capsules compounded with slow-release additive.

March 2016 , 21mg

Thanks Fresh.

You're absolutely correct. I am far too impatient to get to zero and sometimes forget that tapering is about quality of life too.

Hi Dan, just found your thread as another pal in the Celexa/lexapro hell!

I read through your entire thread and feel you pain and admire your strength!

Insane powerful drug with millions unique side effects, take it slow and be extremely careful about the liquid measure. I made so many mistakes including many times some of the the liquid was lost by accident in the middle ( I had to take the whole thing over like 10-12 hours as each drop throw me into death like reaction) then had to guess how much I had to add back to. Each time I was punished hard, very scary.

Just want to say so I can follow your progress along the journey.

Hi, LexAnger.

Thanks for dropping by. I've read quite a few of your posts too.

Using a liquid can be quite frustrating, especially when you're already in a confused state because of WD. I was going to try diluting the solution some more, maybe 2:1 or 4:1, to make dosing more accurate in future, but am concerned that this may over-complicate things even further.

It would be great if we could somehow get the drug companies to make more varied doses available. Tapering would be so much easier if we could have 10, 5, 2 and 1mgs. At the moment 10mg is the smallest citalopram tablet available and the liquid comes in at 40mg per ml. A cynical person might think that pharma don't actually want us to get off these drugs. Looking forward to the day when i'm done with tapering and I can throw away all the syringes, pipettes and bottles.

Put me on the list, LOL!  Why would they want to make it more convenient to come off?  You can be sure they are thrilled to death that so many can't seem to kick their poisons!

Summer 2014 reduced to 0 very quickly, was sick of anhedonia/sexual dysfunction due to meds, depression never controlled if not worse. Didn't recognize WD since symptoms built slowly (thought I had ADD! and menopausal on top of it), starting with severe sweats, very bad cog-fog and memory issues, culminating in weight loss, severe anxiety and depression, panic, severe apathy and insomnia by eight months off.  Saw p-doc who put me on Remeron, increased from 7.5 mg/day to 37.5 mg by May 22, 2015; still doing very badly though able to sleep.

So true, Dan and SG!

Is that insane to have liquid in such a high concentration of 40mg/ml!!

You can dilute most liquids. Keep notes on paper about your recipe and calculations.

There are daffodils everywhere at the moment, waving their brightly coloured heads in the breeze, proclaiming that spring is on the way (it’s not spring, its bloody freezing today). They are also an uncomfortable reminder of this time last year, when I was in the depths of cold-turkey misery. I hadn’t slept for days and my cog fog was so severe that, if you’d have asked me back then, I probably would have told you that daffodils were Yellow Soil Fairies.

It’s been a whole year since I last saw the daffodils and I’m still going through withdrawal!! Still getting headaches, still feeling frightened and anxious, still getting short of breath, still suffering from insomnia, and still struggling with apathy and demotivation.

I would never have put myself through this had I known how long it was going to take or how difficult a task it would be. I genuinely thought that this whole episode would be over within a few short months, and that by now, I would be totally back to normal. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

I’m either a much stupider or a much stronger person than I ever gave myself credit for, because It takes immense reserves of inner strength and patience to undertake the true horror that is psychiatric drug tapering and withdrawal. I know one thing for sure, this will be the first and last time that I put myself through this terrible experience.

This has undoubtedly been the worst year of my life. I carry on mostly because I’m in too stubborn to surrender and admit defeat. There is no way I’m giving up now, not after a year of struggle and mental torture. I’ve come a long way, too far to turn around and go back to where I started. I’m past the point of no return now and will just have to keep pushing on towards my destination.

Hi Dan,

I wish I could copy that last post and submit it to all people who are about to start taking these drugs!

I'm sorry you are still in the hell.  As always, we are caught between that rock and that hard place that is "don't want to take 'em but can't not!"  It's like being held hostage.  That these drugs could do this to us makes me all the more determined to be free of them.

Just wanted you to know that you were "heard," and I am feeling you :-)

Hi SG,

It's just so cruel and seemingly endless. How long will this go on for? Another year? two years? five? Ten? I just want to start rebuilding my life, but it seems impossible right now.

I suppose all we can do is carry on and hope that eventually we'll be writing our success stories and be able to put this nightmare behind us.

I think the strength needed to get through this will make all of life's other problems , ( in the future ) look like a " walk in the park " !

Hang in there.

Yep, I think anything will be easy after going through this.

Lion taming, skydiving, swimming with sharks, snake charming, tightrope walking, will be a breeze after withdrawal :)

I’ve noticed a pattern forming. When I wake up my mood is very low, I’m anxious and I find it very hard to get going. I’ll have some breakfast and take my daily dose of citalopram. After a few hours I find that my mood lifts quite a lot and become more functional, enough to get a few chores done, run some errands and maybe go for a walk. This lasts all afternoon. Then as evening comes around my mood dips again, I get really irritable and nervous, my mind starts ruminating and the negative thoughts creep back in.

What I’m wondering, is this because the dose of citalopram is quite low now and it is wearing off during the day? Would I be better off splitting the dose and taking half in the morning and the other half late afternoon? Would this even out my mood, make no difference or make things worse?

Some people found splitting the dose was helpful to them... I did not taper so if You want the horse's mouth view wait somebody who has done it will be along soon.

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year

As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

Yep, I think anything will be easy after going through this.

Lion taming, skydiving, swimming with sharks, snake charming, tightrope walking, will be a breeze after withdrawal :)

LOL.  You're so right !   :D

Re : splitting the dose . I would try it , and see if it helps. Some , have found it does. Everyone is unique  & has to find what works for them . This is a very " inexact science ".

Ali

Many SSRI's and SSNRI's over 20 years. Zoloft for 7 years followed by Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Celexa, Pristiq, Valdoxan, Mianserin and more - on and off. No tapering. Cold turkey off Valdoxan - end of May 2014

Thanks btdt, we could do with a pharmacist on here to advise us about this sort of thing.

We came close I think there was a lady named Meredith who's husband was a pharmacist he changed completely on SSRi drugs and she came to the marriages thread at effexor withdrawal topix for help she later went to pp not sure if she ever came here or not...

I always thought one day if he makes it out of this ok...we could use his services here but I have not seem him...maybe one day we will get one ;)

I went ahead with splitting the dose and felt an immediate difference. My hunch was right, the afternoon mania/ panic went away, as did the evening irritability.

I’ve continued to hold at 5mg, have been hanging around the 5mg mark since the beginning of February now, apart from that week where I messed up with the measuring. It has definitely been worth holding as I’m feeling much more stable now. I’m consistently getting 7hrs of good quality sleep, I’m feeling far less anxious and the tinnitus has eased off a little bit.

The demotivation and fatigue still continues to bother me. Although they have slowly improved as the dose has decreased and I did have bags of energy during the early stages of CT, so I’m confident that these are side effects and will resolve themselves once I’m finally free of citalopram.

I’ve had a few nice windows too. A few hours here and there where I feel almost normal. I didn’t get any windows for ages and now I’m getting them fairly frequently. Sort of makes me nervous to start tapering again, don’t want to rock the boat and be thrown into the waves.

I’m finally coming to respect the process. You really do have to wait until you are properly stable before making another cut. Strictly following a schedule will eventually get you into lots of trouble. I was being far too impatient to get this over and done with. Lesson learned, it will take as long as it takes and I’ll start listening to my body. There’s no need to unnecessarily make myself ill.

I’ve had a week full of funky dreams. They are chock full of all the emotions that are sadly lacking during my waking hours.

I’ve read somewhere that dreams are a way for our brains to safely explore and reinforce new neural pathways. A safe place to test the circuits without the body getting into any danger. I guess this could work for emotions too.

It’s so encouraging that my brain is still able to activate these long forgotten pathways, even if it is only willing to do so when I’m unconscious. Here’s hoping that the more these circuits are fired, the more likely they will be used when I’m awake.

Thanks, DS.

It's always good to know that we are not alone with our symptoms and that recovery happens in a similar way for other people too. Knowing that what I am experiencing is normal for withdrawal enables me to continue the fight. I would have given up ages ago and been back on full dose if it weren't for SA.

I’m considering starting my taper again soon. I’ve been holding for a good long while now and my symptoms are very mild, so I think it might be time.

All I have at the moment is tinnitus and the occasional headache, both of which are very common side effects of citalopram. So, I reckon that’s about as stable as can expect to get.

What makes me think that it’s time to start cutting again is the apathy that has been getting worse and worse the longer I hold. I’ve done nothing this week other than eat, watch telly and sleep. Haven’t been bothered to wash, shave, tidy-up, go out or do anything at all really.

I’m guessing this is SSRI induced indifference. I’ve noticed it before that whenever I cut my dose I get a burst of energy and enthusiasm. I thought it might have been mania from WD, but perhaps not?

I was doing a micro taper, but I don’t think that cutting every week is giving my brain enough time to recover and catch up and that I was in a constant state of destabilisation.

The plan is to do a full 10% reduction this time and wait as long as it takes to feel as stable as I do now.

I’ve been in a bit of a wave for the last few days. Had some anxiety, irritability and racing thoughts. Nothing too serious, but enough to notice. I think my brain realised that I was about to start tapering again and had a tantrum. Fair enough, it’s not ready yet, so I’ll just have to hold for another week.

I did have a pleasant surprise this morning though. I had an urge to listen to some music. Nothing extraordinary in that, millions of people enjoy music, but not me, well not me in withdrawal anyway.

I used to love music, listening to it and playing it. I find its a very powerful force that elicits a strong emotional response. I’d used to get tingles up and down my spine and my hair would stand on end.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to tolerate any of my favourite tunes since wd set in. Hearing familiar songs would transport me back to a time before AD’s and that would make me sad and yearn to be back there. Sometimes, it would just sound like a dreadful noise that gave me a headache. As for my guitar, the strings have gone rusty and it has been sitting in the corner of the room gathering dust for the last year or so.

Anyway, today was different. I heard an old favourite on the telly and I just had to hear some more. So I did, and then I put a few more songs on, and a few more. Six hours later and I’m still listening!!!

It’s like I’ve reacquainted myself with a long lost friend. I’ve missed the music. I’m so pleased it’s back in my life again. Just have to remember where I left those spare strings now.

Hey Dan, through your wd did you get a pressure behind your eyes with dizziness? Hope your wave is short ☺ Ali

Thanks Ali, the wave has passed now.

Yep, felt like my face was going to explode. Didn't get the dizziness, mostly migraines instead. You're probably bored of hearing people say this, but give it time, it will get better.

Often, the advice that you most need to hear, is the advice that you are most reluctant to accept.

You might want to consider a good long hold anyway. Changing your dose every 2 weeks hasn't given your brain a chance to consolidate the changes. As you know , the site recommends holding for 4-6 weeks at a time.  I'd hate to see you charge along with your taper , then get hit with rebound symptoms after you've finished... this would be a good time to take a tapering holiday for a couple of months.

I've heard this sort of thing hundreds of times on here before. I always tended to ignore it, thinking that I was different from everyone else and would be able to get off quickly. I'm not different. This is going to take a long, long time. But I'm cool with that now. Holding has shown me that I can get off of these awful drugs AND still have some quality of life.

Thank you, Fresh  :) ... still holding at 5mg

I’ve had a massive moment of realisation about what initially caused me to fall into the clutches of psychiatric medications.

I was browsing through the tinnitus thread and someone mentioned being overly sensitive to sounds and that it was called hyperacusis. I realised that I suffer from this too. I did a quick search on google and it was like a light being switched on and illuminating something that I had never noticed before.

Thinking back through the dim mists of time I now realise that I have had noise sensitivity for many, many years. I can remember that I didn’t have it when I was young. I grew up in a busy town centre, it was always noisy, but I never really noticed. I can’t exactly remember when hyperacusis started, I think it might have been in my early twenties.

All sorts of everyday sounds would really annoy me. As time went by, more and more noises would set me off. I would become frightened and aggressive, a typical flight or fight response. I would often get into fights with neighbours or be compelled to move house.

Even when the noises were not there I would become overly vigilant and be waiting for them. I didn’t realise it at the time, but I was in a constant state of anxiety. I’ve never connected the dots before, hyperacusis was the cause of my problems and not a symptom of major depression. I was never mentally ill. I just had a problem with the perception and processing of sounds.

One of the treatments for hyperacusis is SSRI medication. So it’s probably no surprise that whenever I tried to go CT that it would come back full force. I once lay in bed and cried for hours, because I could hear water dripping from the gutter and it was preventing me from getting to sleep.

Anyway, I know this is going to be something that I will have to do a lot of work on as I taper off the meds and try to find non-drug ways of coping with it.

I intend to start a thread in the symptoms and self-care section once I have done some more research.

Dan, that is fascinating! I hope you learn something from your research that can help others with this problem.  I was having a recollection about a man that lived in the country adjacent to where I was keeping some sheep for herding practice reasons.  I would come mid-day to work my dogs, and while working one, the other, tied or in a crate, would bark.  Well, this neighbor would shoot off his shot-gun out over the property when my dogs barked!  He was so angered by the barking!  I thought he was unreasonable because it was during the day, not at night, and for short bursts and then I'd be gone.  Well, he probably had this condition, making it unbearable!  I'm lucky my dogs and I weren't shot!

SG

Started ADs back around 1995 after bad break-up, starting with Prozac.  Switched to Wellbutrin, and then to Effexor in 2002
Effexor XR 2002-2014 up to 225 mg at one point, down to 37.5 mg towards end but back up to 75 mg in 2014; now realize I had W/D as I dropped down, memory very poor about history.  Extreme emotions, poor concentration as I stepped back down, didn't connect the dots!

June 1. 2015 Reinstated Effexor XR 37.5 mg, Remeron dropped to 30 mg PM. Immediate relief of symptoms, like nothing had ever happened!  Joined SA and began on advice of friend who recognized it was WD all along! Began tapering in July 2015.

Been tapering both meds ever since, focusing on one more than the other or doing no more than 5% of each per month.

12 mg Effexor and 5.8 mg Remeron (mirtazapine SolTabs to make a solution with OraPlus) as of 5/4/2017

Update 3/14/18: 2.9 mg Remeron and 6 mg Effexor; 6/10/18:  2.6 mg Remeron and 4.9 mg Effexor

Hi SG.

I live in the country too and feel the same when my neighbour is chopping firewood. The sound of his chainsaw drives me nuts!!! He probably has no idea how stressed out it makes me.

You can never tell what's going on in other people's heads. I often go for a walk along the seafront, it seems to be a magnet for disturbed people, you can see it on their faces that something isn't right. I think to myself, I wonder what their story is? but have never plucked up the courage to go and sit next to someone and ask,"Are you okay? would you like to talk about it?" There have been many lonely days when I wish someone had done that for me.

Sorry Ali, nothing much helped. Painkillers didn't touch it. I had some corticosteroid nasal spray, but it took about 6 weeks to work and I can't be sure if it helped or not as I started taking it the same time as I reinstated. Could be worth a try though.
