I had the worst acid reflux in the beginning of w/d and had to sleep propped up on pillows in bed. This has got a lot better over time and now I get it but not very often and its not nearly as bad and does not last very long. So you will get better from this poodlebell

Anyone deal with this popping up from time to time during WD? I have dealt with it occasionally prior to Lexapro(nothing like this) but in the last two weeks it has just made me miserable. It seems to make me feel dizzy as well and then increase my anxiety.

It seems to be less of a burning sensation and more of a swollen tongue feeling along with feeling like a burp is stuck w/ pressure. I don't want to eat or drink anything but that seems to make it worse as well.

Lexapro from October 2012-October 2014

Yes. I had significant reflux previously and was originally prescribed omeprazole but this made me feel sick and also interacted with the citalopram, so I stopped it and just treated the reflux with occasional use of over the counter gaviscon and zantac (ranitidine). In the last few weeks of tapering (escitalopram) and since discontinuing I've had much worse reflux and also occasionally wake up with a feeling of external pressure on my throat/neck as if I'm being strangled, which happens less if I take zantac before sleeping (and also less if I take telfast to reduce allergic postnasal drip which I also suffer from). I hadn't connected it with withdrawal, I just assumed it was my reflux getting worse because of putting on weight and not eating as healthily as previously. Noting that these two particular groups of drugs which I find help both affect histamine receptors (telfast H1 receptors, ranitidine H2 receptors) and that AD's also have an effect on histamines, I wonder now if the increase in reflux symptoms may be a neurochemical effect - not that the reflux itself is increased, but that the acid/irritant effect on the throat from existing reflux is increased.

From personal experience, I recommend digestive enzymes or betaine HCL (often comes with pepsin, an enzyme).

Or, stop eating the foods that cause reflux, such as dairy.

I never had this problem in my life, but had it bad last night, so far fine today, but does anyone think the withdrawal causes symptoms like this?

So interesting you just posted this. I had acid reflux as a child/teen and took medication for it for years... about 4/5 years ago I stopped the medication because the reflux seemed to stop (if I missed a pill previously I could notice a difference but I stopped noticing a difference- hence I stopped the prescription). This was about 2 years after being on Lexapro... I haven't had a problem with reflux since UNTIL this last couple weeks. I am at 3 months off Lexapro. I was wondering if it had anything to do with it myself... strange.

2008- 2015 Lexapro 10mg (7 yrs) for GAD

Trying to survive the ebbs and flows of withdrawal since July 23rd (took my last dose, tapered with doctors help)

Suffering from anger, irritability, detachment, spurts of sadness and extreme apathy.

Currently only taking Ambien to help with Sleep Anxiety.

I've been struggling with acid, for a couple of weeks now , I've tried acv and this seemed to make it worse , so I'm currently trying dgl but I'm so sceptical about it, I don't know if it's wd related or something else.

It's starting to cause damage and don't know what to do.

I've raised my bed 6 inches, I don't eat 3 hours before bed, I don't drink caffeine, don't eat sugar or greasy food , and every day it get s worse.

I know the doctor will prescribe drugs, but at this rate I'm not gonna have a stomach to save.

Doctor prescribed propranolol for anxiety, adrenaline rushes.

Propranolol 10mg 4× a day.

Nearly 3 months after reaction, new symptoms include,

Awful insomnia, burning head.waves of depression and suicide ideation.

I developed acid reflux in 2009 due to weight gain from an interaction of geodon trazodone and bp drug lisinopril. I had to be put on stomach acid blockers to protect my esophagus. I didn't know there were alternatives then. Maybe they would have worked. I don't know. As soon as my cns settles down (also I have lost 50 lbs) I will begin to taper off. Hope you can find an alternative to PPI'S.

I hope so too , but the pain is constant, I'm considering the h2 type like zantac.

Otherwise I'll be taking antacids 4 times a day because I've found natural remedies don't work. Maybe if I wasn't in wd something mild would be ok.

I'll keep taking the dgl as I've read it takes a couple of weeks to start working.

a lot of acid reflux is about dysfunction of the esophageal sphincter.  this is essentially a type of dystonia (similar to medication-related constipation) and CNS problems, such as those in withdrawal, can cause or aggravate the situation.

i had gastroesophageal reflux disorder before meds, and no PPIs or other drugs ever properly managed it.  they never found any cause for the problem or the low effectiveness of the medications.  once i was in withdrawal, i began to see that the drugs were making me feel sicker, in the body.  i tapered off them slowly, but still had rebound heartburn for months afterwards as a result of proton pump overproliferation or whatever else.

during withdrawal, both before and after i tapered off the drugs, i would periodically have bouts of significant heartburn and reflux.  everything digestive has been in flux, like my ability to digest dairy, nausea too significant to eat through, metabolic preferences for fats instead of carbs, gastric bleeding with no visible source, etc.  i attribute the heartburn and reflux problem to neurological issues caused by the drugs and the withdrawal.

some periods, even without PPIs, i feel great---no heartburn, no reflux, and the ability to eat anything i want.  it was never overly food-specific, since no dietary adjustments or exclusions ever made my heartburn better (though i avoided a few things as a teenager, like eating only small portions, orange soda, etc).  eating carefully and seeing what might cause a worsening is relevant, as others have suggested, but sometimes the cause is not something food-related or capable of meaningful management through food.

you can pay mind to things like body positioning (especially in sleep), exercise habits, the timing and content of meals, adequate hydration, sensory input levels, emotional state, and so forth in trying to minimize the impact of reflux troubles.  drugs normally prescribed for heartburn (PPIs, H2 blockers, etc) are psychotropics and may involve a worsening of your withdrawal or reflux situation.  other things, like sucralfate and acid absorbers, may or may not help or cause complications.

from 2005-2012, i spent 7 years taking 17 different psychotropic medications covering several classes.  i would be taking 3-7 medications at a time, and 6 out of the 17 medications listed below were maxed or overmaxed in clinical dosage before i moved on to trying the next unhelpful cocktail.

antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, NDRIs, tetracyclics): zoloft, wellbutrin, effexor, lexapro, prozac, cymbalta, remeron
antipsychotics (atypical): abilify, zyprexa, risperdal, geodon
sleep aids (benzos, off-label antidepressants & antipsychotics, hypnotics): seroquel, temazepam, trazodone, ambien
anxiolytics: buspar
anticonvulsants: topamax

i tapered off all psychotropics from late 2011 through early 2013, one by one.  since quitting, ive been cycling through severe, disabling withdrawal symptoms spanning the gamut of the serious, less serious, and rather worrisome side effects of these assorted medications.  previous cross-tapering and medication or dosage changes had also caused undiagnosed withdrawal symptoms.

I know where your coming from ,but I feel the damage in my chest, and I'm wheezing, if it continues at this rate I fear irrepreble damage. I've raised my bed 6 inches, and I sleep on my left side, and my diet is pretty bland.

What does ease the symptoms , is bicarbonate of soda in water.just a bit worried about the salt content. I'm trying to choose the lesser of about 5 evils. Sorry for venting. Frustrating.

Since my adverse reaction, I've had reactive hypoglycemia. But In the past few weeks, it's calmed down. I wonder if my stomach is still producing to much acid from this period.

Just hope it returns to normal soon.

Anyone heard SSRI can help with sensitive troath ? An ENT doctor told me so (Got worse troath and reflux problems now once I am off SSRI and it all started during a trip to China) Also seems like I am super sensitive to PPIS and H2 blockers- they make me feel "drugged" and all kinds of meds that affect nervous system seems to ne like this..after the horrible cold turkey and long withdrawal story... is that likely to be linked ? Please let me know if you have similar experiences or know this ?

Kindest regards / trying

fluoxetine since 13years followed doctors advice tapered 40 mg to 0mg in 4 months july 2015 august crasched in panic attacks etc end of september akatisia , nausea, crying alot no one told me it could be something called withdrawal I read it and also about going back to last dose No one knew if it was worth it. tried reinstate autumn 2014 5 mg prozac then 10mg since 29/11-2014 feel only worse sucidal for real, tried antihistamine 10 mg or oxascand (benso) 5 mg or valerian for anxiousness but sick feeling taking this. 6mg prozac to taper slowly down since 15/2-2014 (30ml out of 100ml water with 20 mg pill) tapered 10-20% per month until June 2015 super anxious depressed tired. Got Buspar may 2015 5mg 10mg 15mg headache etc
June 2015: 10mg buspar plus around 3 mg prozac quit this cold turkey in July 2015. One week later crying spells and suicidal. Tried 5htp.magnesium omega 3 until September. October 2015 tested vit D was 17 . Since October 2015 ONLY Vit D and magnesium . nov 2016 can laungh again! but still too anxious ,depressed or lethargic in waves can't focuS, Crying spells , scared, social fobia, bitterness. .. . Did yours ever calm down .

hey, sorry i missed responding to this.  im in my fifth year of withdrawal symptoms, and the heartburn and reflux still come and go, depending on my other symptoms.

ive found out that there is actually better documentation and acceptance of protracted rebound heartburn than there is of protracted withdrawal symptoms.  rebound symptoms from PPIs lasting for months or even up to a year seem to be readily accepted within the medical literature.

that is not to suggest i am thinking of my present difficulties as a rebound issue--it is most likely neurological, and may or may not have contributions from whatever goes on with adipose tissue post-discontinuation.  i do have periods where everything is fine and i digest most things okay.  itll be a while yet before stuff is actually enduringly stable.

from 2005-2012, i spent 7 years taking 17 different psychotropic medications covering several classes.  i would be taking 3-7 medications at a time, and 6 out of the 17 medications listed below were maxed or overmaxed in clinical dosage before i moved on to trying the next unhelpful cocktail.

Hi! so,  consistent severe troath pain between meals and burping and an esopageal sphincter (the stomach muscle) that doesnt Close (seen trough gastroscopi) ... that argues for a reflux right ?

I have been in this ciorcus long enough now so depserate to get ! two things I wish to ask for your advice :

1) Does anyone know exercises to train the  esopageal sphincter (the stomach muscle)  to Close ? ( som kind of diafraghma breathing is suppose to help)?

2) I am in this forum cause I have been on SSRIs (Prozac) for 14 years and since 1,5 years now completely free from that BUT I learned 90% of the serotónin is in the body - the thought struck me know -Can it be because I have been on this **** and now am of it that my stomach ( and its muscle doesn't function normally ????? I mean the SSRI fucked up alot of receptors and functionin my body with hormones end stuff to (horrible lesson learned the hard way trough withdrawal)

The thing is that I probalbly had an pneumonia with this also ( at this time the dr tried PPI:s on my but I could barely Breathe and even less swallow cause my troath was swollen and cramping with this **** ) not sure what was what though .. tested positive for (clamydia pneumonie anitbodies later ..) but it might have been the reflux causing the pneumonia /breathing problems as well.

You are right - PPI:s are bad BUT the argument o´f what the acid does as i comes up i the troath and chest might be worse ? (thats the specialists argument and my ENT ...)

BUT I don't know what to do now !! ... The H2 blockers (Ranitadine) actually seemed to "help" a bit so I could eat and swallow again but then this consistent severe troath pain between meals and burping and an esopageal sphincter (the stomach muscle) that doesnt Close (seen trough gastroscopi) .. came up...

. that argues for a reflux right ? Reflux is said to be caused by low stomach acid ... so I can imagine an antiacids makes this problem worse...   BUT it still helped at first then now its séems no matter if I take it or not my troathpain persists !

what is your advise ?

Tried Everything it feels like everyday more with this pain I just getting closer to shot my self! so please anything!

Thank you ! and sorry for a bit messy message - hope it made some sense to you somehow .. not good at telling my story being this upset and under pain for soo long (this has been going on for 4 months!) It started in China this summer,... and no ... no "bug" found yet.. not that They tested me for any,...what should I ask to be tested for ?

Again grateful to any advise!

Kindest regards//trying

Hi,
Sorry but am about to give up now! I am some how back in a negative spiral of meds and symptomes and it has gone so far I see no way out of this and its getting worse again- what should/can I do ?

I it has been going on since july when I in China started to get heart palpitations the trouble swallowing and the latter increased..then as I came home I had a Cold that just stayed and stayed and I started to have stomach pain

Since I came home the Swedish Healthcare have been below all critisisms...(for the Cold and troath they did nothing ..and for the stomachpain they gave me omeoprazole (which made my breathing problems worse- mayeb because I had a atypicalpneumonia  (Twar) or it helped causing it - thats a known sideeffect from ppi....)

NOW they have taken H.pylory tests and seen in gastroscopy that my esophageal spincter ísn't Always closed.....BUT no one seems to know what it is and what was first and even less how to treat it.. and after 3 months of severe illness (not anything showing in Quick-infectionscreening but when they finally after 3 months took a blood test for Twar (clamydia pneumoniae) It was positive... they gave me antibiotocs then, but probably it was after the worst part and don't know if it healed anything or just made me feel bad for 4 weeks on the antobiotics....

NOW shortness och breath is coming back. pain in throat i Always there - it comes every day after a while upright and then it just gets worse. I tried omeoprazole, esomeprazole - they both made me very sick (lika I was drugged and like there was a "sucking" feeling in my troath which made it even harder to breath :/).. I got really sick pneumonia I Think (couldn't even talk without shortness of breath and was very very tired (normally I am in good condition so this was very odd for me) after 3 months in an

then ranitadine I could take - it made me tired but it somehow helped so I could eat .. but the throatpain came back and increased so after 3-4 weeks on  150mg x2 ranitadine

I thought maybe I should try to cut back on the ranitadine now been taking 75mgx2/day but then resently my shortness of breath came back again

I try acupuncture on my self ( I am educated in this)
according to an med. article for relux where they showed acup+ppi was better than more PPI )

I just tried one Pantoprazole for the first time and I feel headache, the strange drugged feeling (like when I was coming of prozac) and like a strange pressure up my troath also swollowing feeling in my nose...

I wonder if I am allegic to the colors and **** in this medicines ?

I also wonder if this PPI seems to worsen my condition more then help ... then what does that mean? - Can it be that my CNS is still sensitised after withdrawal and CT story 1,5 years ago ?

Someone here familiar with -Twar ?

Anything that could help me make sense and get me out of this circle could save my life!
(I don't Think I will try more PPI:s  ´:/  but then again I had some kind of relief from Ranitadine and I didn't feel as drugged from that one ,...)

VERY GRATEFULL TO YOUR REPLIES!
kindest regards/still trying ...

me too. i have a gastritis and GERD. Hoping i will find alternative to not being too long time on IPP. But for the moment i need them. Polysilane (a paste with dimeticone (silicone) seem to help when my burning throat is horrible and when i want to sleep a little. In that moment just breathing with mouth is difficult. Silicone is plastic but if it can help.  While sitting i have gerd, so raising my bed does not seem to be many efficient. If i could sleep standing.

Sometimes i think about a harness like that, to sleep standing or when gerd is too hard,

From personal experience, I recommend digestive enzymes or betaine HCL (often comes with pepsin, an enzyme).

Or, stop eating the foods that cause reflux, such as dairy.

Hi Alostrata, I don't understand.

If i have acid reflux, it is because my stomach is too acid.

(I have gastritis and i am under PPIs to be antiacid)

How does betaine HCL (that is acid) could help GERD (a state with too much acid). It sound opposite?

That is absolutely incorrect. The stomach fills with hydrochloric acid in the course of normal digestion. There is no such thing as too much acid in the stomach.

Reflux occurs when gas causes the acid to be pushed up towards the esophagus, where it does not belong. This can also occur when the valve between the stomach and esophagus is damaged, weakened, or malfunctioning.

Gastritis is a general term saying that your stomach is inflamed. This can be from many things, such as infection or other injury. It is not from acid. Pharyngite (pharyngitis in English) means your pharynx is irritated. This can be from acid reflux.

It is possible you are having a reaction in your digestive system to some foods you are eating, causing irritation and gas that pushes stomach acid up into your pharynx. You might try Elimination or exclusion diets for reactions to food (food intolerance) to reduce the gas or irritation.

Ok thanks for the explanations.

"your pharynx is irritated. This can be from acid reflux."-> yes, but doctor said it was not acid reflux but virus or bacteria. So i have to wait 10 days maximum and it will become normal.

It seems there are periods when i could eat all diversity of food  i want. And moment were i can eat nothing.

So i doubt that it is an intolerance. (last year i had tested gluten in laboratory and it was ok)

The stomach seem to be better today. He says me after IPP in 4 days to use gaviscon (a anti acid?).

Ok so my acid was good, just my stomach that was irrited and did not support any food. I hope i will be more aware in first sign of my stomach next time.

Since i have stop all, each time i am ill, i have difficulties to support it, it destabilize me at an important point. Like exponential, it aggravates very quickly becoming totally weak and instable. Really hard. losing rapidly weight. (it will take months to re-gain this kilos)

Hi,
Sorry but am about to give up now!

These symptoms are exactly what I'm experiencing.

I could have written this!

I'm also on Pantoprazole and am looking to have further investigations done to find out whats going on.

Hi! so,  consistent severe troath pain between meals and burping and an esopageal sphincter (the stomach muscle) that doesnt Close (seen trough gastroscopi) ... that argues for a reflux right ?

I know this was a couple of years ago, but I'm experiencing the same symptoms tryingtosurvive.

They are VERY unpleasant, and the PPI I was prescribed doesn't seem to be working.

She did mention AD's as causing GERD, but I just want the investigations over with.

I've had 2 colonoscopies. One without sedation, because they couldn't get me sleep. It was because I took Valium and the sedative was a derivative to Valium. It was uncomfortable, but I got through it. The 2nd one I was only supposed to be groggy, but had a nice nap. And it didn't cause me any problems. The worst is the prep. I've never had an endoscopy. But they do put you under for those in the US anyways, so you don't fight the tube going down your throat. My neighbor had one and is on AD's. She said it was a piece of cake. But I'm sure everyone is different. You know I have high HA just like you. It is not cancer. Maybe they can do an ultrasound of your throat? I don't know if they can get results from one or not.

But trust the dr. Unfortunately, they know best. Maybe the dr won't think it's necessary.

Thank you Frogie, I really appreciate this.

I think I would have to have the camera investigation done to see where the damage is, and what form its in.  Find out what I have to do, whether through meds (which I want to avoid like the plague), or change to FODMAPs diet through my ND.

The pain has subsided today, and my bowel movements became "normal" (TMI - sorry), but there is a link there, as yesterday when I had extremely painful throat pain, my bowel movements were "up the creek".

Ugghhh! Man are we living through hell

Take care,

Hello,

In the last few months I've started feeling a burning sensation at my throat and now I find some difficulties in speaking, my throat aches. My neck muscles just started to feel tight. This has got progressively worse. Never had this before.

I booked an appointment with an otorhinolaryngologist for the end of the month. I made some research and I think it might be gastroesophageal reflux. First thing I thought it was some weird feeling from WD and so I started panicking, but now I think I got this because of the stress brought by WD itself.

Could it be acid reflux? I wonder if it will be a chronic condition (this will add up to WD syndrome and vulvodynia). Everything in WD seems to get CHRONIC.

What do you think of Gaviscon, do you take it? It's a new world for me.

I'm not particularly worried, I am just asking, the only thing I can do is to take it with humor.

I'm also totally new to this problem, so I can't identify a cause.

November 2014 - September 2015: Zoloft 50 mg, Trilafon 4mg, clonazepam 1mg
October 2015 - September 2016: Effexor 75 mg
September 2016 - January 2017: Effexor 150 mg
Stopped Effexor in March 2017 after tapering under medical supervision
The doctor I've now found is an expert in withdrawal from ADs
Persistent withdrawal syndrome since July 2017: Prozac 10 mg, clonazepam 0.5 mg, to cope with it.
December 2017 -  withdrawing from Prozac, 10 mg every 2 days
Drug free since January (?) 2018

Symptoms: pins and needles, burning skin sensations, PSSD, OCD, mood swings (a lot), malaise (a lot), muscle spasms, voice in my conscience.

Doing not so bad, but I want to be the person I was.

My reflux has completely subsided with weight loss program I've been doing for the last month (2 more to go but will continue until I reach my target weight).

Am eating better, and half the amount I used to eat.

The weight is dropping off at a steady rate of 1Ib per week.

Point being, comfort eating leads to all sorts of issues.

Sorry for late response Tikki.

I'm not following any special diet (have done enough of those as it is).

Just a straight forward NHS "Eat4Health" 12 week program.  I've reached Week 8 and have lost almost 14Ibs.

I think it's more to do with eating healthier which in turn improves overall gut health.

I really need to take something for acid reflux as the pain is so debilitating I can’t sleep. I eat clean- no dairy and wheat and pretty bland. It’s not esophageal reflux but the acid leaks into small intestine and causes rib/back pain.

Tums and all the other OTC don’t work. The only thing that worked is a PPI short-term like Prilosec. I can’t take this now because there is a reaction with benzos as I’m tapering off Klonopin.

That leaves the H2 antagonists like zantac etc. Here’s my issue. When I CT’d off remeron low dose (3.75) two weeks later I took an antihistamine for sleep and it kicked my withdrawal into full gear. Low dose remeron affects histamine receptors more than serotonin. So I’m scared to take anything that affects histamine receptors as I don’t want a setback, even if a H2 drug may not directly affect H1 or H3 in the brain. (I think there are 4 or 5 kinds of histamine receptors). I know this is sort of an advanced pharmac9ology question, but figured I’d ask. I’m in so much pain I’m considering trying a zantac.

Does anyone have any experience or advice with this?

1990s-early 2000s: On and off different AD medicines like Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac, and Lexapro.

2004: Klonopin .75-1 mg a day for anxiety.

2012: Started micro-taper off Klonopin. Used Benadryl or Doxylamine for sleep nightly. Melatonin. Ate clean and did exercise.

2014: Finished micro-taper with very little PAWS. No more Klonopin.  Started fish oil, probiotics, vitamins, and curcumin.

November 2016: ADHD medicines: Vyvanse (60 mg), Dexedrine (15 mg), Adderall (15 mg), Desoxyn (20 mg) at various times, not at once.

March 2017: Mirtazapine 7.5 mg but immediately went up to 15 mg but then back down to 12, then 7.5 mg. For insomnia, not for depression. Melatonin too.

November 2017: Dropped to 3.75 mg Mirtazapine and eventually started taking it every other day or so.

February 2018: Stopped 3.75 Mirtazapine after ER visit. Stabilized on Klonopin .125 mg as prepare to micro-taper again. Also stopped melatonin after a few years of use (5-20 mg a night).

February 2019: One year later: The worst is over. Far from back to normal but 24/7 dread and fear adrenaline surges and suicidal ideation are done. Still anxiety, parasthesia, dysuatonomia, tinnitus, and minor insomnia but I'm also a year into my Klonopin taper down to .016 so much of this could be to that. I still have occasional feelings of unease (serotonin) but it's much better than 24/7 doom. I will have a success story and so will you!
