Alpacino Paroxetine withdrawal, interesting information

Alpacino

Recommended Posts

Abruptly stopped Paroxatine about 22 months ago now after been on for two years and still experiencing cog fog and memory issues. Considered re taking the medication and doing re search came across a site called RXISK and through the site I came in contact with a specialist called prof David Healey, he specialises in anti depressants and their issues and affects in people and has published various books ect. On the website they do an online consolation that all in costs £550+ and through mine I was informed that Ssri can do a certain amount of muscle damage and it's through this that the effects after withdrawal seem to last and the best thing is to become as fit and well as you can.

Very short story but thought it important to post as some people arnt in a position to spend that amount if money.

Thanks Alpacino,

This prof person sounds like an interesting guy.

Do they have any tests that can prove the muscle damage? Or any tests for any ssri damage.

Do they think the damage is permanent?

I think you will find this site is full of people trying their best to become as well as they can inspite of doctors efforts to sabotage that.

Thanks for the info. and thanks for taking the time to post.

"Considered re taking the medication"

Alpacino if you are in fact 22 months drug free then personally i would not go back to these drugs.

Healy in one of his article talks about 2-4 yrs for healing once drug free.

You are suffering protracted wdl that will get better in time. This occured because you didnt taper as per rec ...ie at 10% is my guess.

Best thing to take is 'time' and 'pictures' not these drugs imo.

If i am wrong and you are currently still on drugs then you have not made that clear in post #1

My suggestion is stay the course ...drug free.

Welcome Alpacino,

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm not sure if that was the only reason you posted, or if you would like some support also. We have a lot of information here about how to manage symptoms as you recover from antidepressant withdrawal.  Here is the link to our symptoms and self care section, you may find some useful ideas. Especially read the topics pinned at the top.

I'm also having some memory issues and just started experimenting with magnesium threonate to see if that will speed up recovery of that part of my brain.

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

My Introduction Thread

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

Hi guys

Thanks for taking the time to reply I have supplied little information about myself due to not knowing how to use the site properly

Basically I started on Paroxatine and over the course of two years built up to about 50mg due to my body becoming tolerant to the drug, then about 22 months ago now I decided to take myself off the drug due to the cons outweighing the pros of taking the medication I did this over about two weeks and experienced horrible withdrawal affects such as zaps, sweats, mood swings, sexual problems but all this subsided and when it did then came the cognitive and memory issues, never whilst I was on the medication did this happen only when I came off. So then after searching the internet endlessly and not really finding a conclusion as to why this happened or at least how to fix it I came across David Healy.

I did a 45 minute consultation with him via Skype and then he is currently on with producing a report that will be entered into my medical records and that I can take to a doctor.

He believes that the drugs have lead to a certain amount of muscle damage but has not gone into details as to how or why. He used Tiger woods as being a prime example having gone from being one of the best golfers going to now he doesn't seem the same after the problems he has had and taking medication ultimately 'losing his touch'

The reason the whole things affects me so much is that my job is technical and requires cognitive sharpness and problem solving and things I used to do really well even while on medication I struggle with now and to an extent it's also made me a little bit clumsy too. I'm hoping in time I return back to normal but it's hard because sometimes hope isn't good enough, I'm not asking to be made smarter, just to return to my normal function before stopping or taking the medication in the first place.

Did david Healy suggest anything else to take to ease the withdrawal..

I'm thinking about a private consult with him..in all honesty would you say it was worth the money?

2000 - sertraline for job anxiety low confidence (17 years old) ..which turned the next 16 years into nightmare!

On/off sertraline severe withdrawals every time. 2014 - felt better as reduced dose of sertraline no more inner restlessness. Doctor rushed off again. Hit severe withdrawal. Lost the little I had in life. Couldn't get stable again on 12.5mg. Was switched to prozac. Had severe reaction to prozac..came off in November 2015 at 6mg as felt more confused and damaged on it..Even more withdrawal ..rage, depression, dyphoria, near constant suicidal ideation, self harm impulses, doom, concrete block in head, unable to do much of anything with this feeling in head..went back on 6mg of sertraline to see if would alleviate anything. It didn't..reduced from December to June 2016 came off at 2.5mg sertraline as was hospitalised for the severe rage, suicidal impulses, and put on 50mg lofepramine which in 2nd week reduced all symptoms but gave insomnia which still have..psych stopped lofepramine cold turkey..no increased withdrawal symptoms new symptoms from lofepramine except persistant insomnia which has as side effect.

Taking Ativan for 8 months for the severe rage self harm impulses 1-3 times a week (mostly 2 times a week) at .5mg. Two months (I'm unsure exactly when the interdose started to happen) ago interdose withdrawal seemed to happen..2 days I think after the Ativan.

Nightmare that could have been avoided!

Tiger was addicted to pain killers... But I guess any drug can cause this crap were in. I hope the muscles heal over time because I know there is something going on with mine and when I complained the first week this stuff was given to me in 03 that my legs hurt real bad and were real weak I was told that it was anxiety and dose got upped. Every time I try to get off my legs would go to mush and could barely walk and biceps would swell and get stiff. Now being off after a correct taper, these issues are more bearable but legs hurt and are weak especially the day after I do any mild activity. I used to lift weights and loved the sore feeling and it went away the next day or two but this is not the same and I know I used to heal from lifting so I guess in time my muscles will heal again. I hope........

Paxil start September 2003 due to Fluoroquinolone adverse reaction that I wish doc. knew what it was. 10mg. most of the time with a few short runs of 20mg. FAST tapered 3 times and finally hit poop out or a reaction to nsaid's in Nov.2013. Started a 10% taper Jan. 2014 and have been ok until Sept 14 and went through a short hell. Now plodding through and looking for the light with unrelenting insomnia and pain, fog, loss of interests....<p>12/20/14 - .8mg.

1/01/15 - .75 mg.

1/15/15 - .42 mg. better sleep now, hope it continues...

2/11-15 - .25 mg. doing really good!! 2 weeks feel 85% of old me!

3/17/15 .14 mg. Knee pain bad!

4/07/15 .05 mg. this is so small now that I am estimating and just licking it off palm small as a "."

4/13/15 NOTHING !!!! Took my last little micro dose on 4/12/15.

Hi guys

Sorry for the delayed response, what I will try do is publish the he did report on here, that may save you some money LoveandLight and if not then you can take from mine what you can and maybe strengthen your consultation with that one and NZ11 he said the reason why this happens is unknown as it a stands but puts things like jaw clenching and teeth grinding that I had when I was on it down to the affects on the muscles.

The consultation was £220ish and the report to follow on from it was £330ish, this was uploaded to a share file with headed and signed paper and also is entered into my medical records and I guess the reason for the report is so that the doctor takes it seriously too often they put these things down to anxiety when in actual fact what this proves is that this is a very real thing that is happening and does affect people like us guys in s very real way. Not a 'mind over matter' situation.

Hi all

I've booked an appointment at the docs in a couple of weeks do discuss the report I mentioned in my previous thread.

I've been suffering with cognitive and memory issues since a really rapid taper from a high dosage of Paroxatine when I was on the drug no issues at all when I came off the drug (tapering over a couple of weeks) I had symptoms but none that affected cognition or memory but to the day literally that they stopped then Boom then started the bad memory, clumsiness and bad cog fog.

I'm now 22 months off and genuinely feel like as a final go at trying to fix this is by going back on, it's just seems highly coincidental that when I stopped this happened and I feel the only logical thing to do or at least try to go back on and taper properly this time.

Any suggestions?

Al, please keep all your posts in the Introductions forum in this thread. Only one Intro topic to a customer.

Reinstating after such a long time is a gamble. If I were you, I'd initially try a very low dose, such as 1mg, to see how it affects you. If the results are bad, you know to back off.
