moeroe: 5mg haldol and 50 mg promethazine

6months ago some problems happened within my parents home where I was living at the moment. After that I was homeless and the police forbade to go back.

Because I had no where to go and doctors were concerned about me(or so they sad) I was for tge first time in my life admitted to a mental healh facility. During that time I was still I was a person who was very content in life. I also had a very strong athletic body. Work hard and just enjoyd my life.

During my stay in the facility I kept refusing to take any kind of medication they offered me. Up to the point thay said I have to take medication because I was admitted to a mental hospital. But I kept refusing it. Then when things got tensed up they sent me to a closed department where there is going outside or freedom like that. After a month in that state I got fed up with and tried to escape. Then I was very angry. That was stupid of me because by that I first gave them the chance to force me to take drugs. So they forced me to take 5mg haldol and 50mg promethazine in oral form. That was actually the first time I came in contact with psychiatric drugs.

After that I collapsed on tge ground my hart was pounding irregularly. I was gasping for air and my legs felt very weak. I couldn't do anything. At that time I knew my life would nevr be the same.

Everything changed after that my character the way I looked to life, I started to sleep bad, my body started to lose it's strength. I began to become despressed. Since then no psychiatric doctor wanted to agree with me that that medication started all of those problems. I myself am totally convinced that that incident started my problems.

This is almost 4 months ago. I still feel that awfull numbness in my legs and experiencing most of the other problems. I haven't taken any meds after that incident. I know it ruined my brain and central nervous system but it to recover. I searcged the web alot but don't find people who experienced something similair, thereby I nean same medication. I really am desperate. I cannot study and work further if these problems presist. Please give me some feedback

Hi moeroe , welcome to the site.

The drugs you were given have caused the symptoms you're having now , but you will recover from this.

Haldol is an anti-psychotic , and promethazine (phenergan) is used for it's sedating effects.

Your post makes me wonder what was going on for you before that incident , but I respect your privacy if you don't want to

talk about it.   Any street drugs you had taken will have de-stabilized your central nervous system , so you may still be

recovering from that.

It may take quite a few more months to get better , but you are on your way.

Best wishes ,  Fresh

1987-1997 pertofran , prothiaden , Prozac 1997-2002 Zoloft 2002-2004 effexor 2004-2010 Lexapro 40mg

Sept. 2012 -decreased 90mg in 6months. Care taken over by Dr Lucire in March 2013 , decreased last 30mg at 2mg per week over 3 months. July 21 , 2013- last dose of Cymbalta

Protracted withdrawal syndrome kicked in badly Jan.2014 Unrelenting akathisia until May 2014. Voluntary hosp. admission. Cocktail of Seroquel, Ativan and mirtazapine and I was well enough to go home after 14 days. Stopped all hosp. meds in next few months.

July 2014 felt v.depressed - couldn't stop crying. Started pristiq 50mg. Felt improvement within days and continued to improve, so stayed on 50mg for 8 months.

Began taper 28 Feb. 2015. Pristiq 50mg down to 45mg. Had one month of w/d symptoms. Started CES therapy in March. No w/d symptoms down to 30mg.

October 2015 , taking 25mg Pristiq. Capsules compounded with slow-release additive.

Welcome moeroe,

Thank you for sharing your story with us, I'm sorry for everything you have been through. As Fresh has mentioned, you will recover, it may just take a little more time. It sounds like you had a bad reaction to these drugs, we see it here sometimes, but most doctors don't accept that this can happen.

Did you take 5mg haldol and 50mg promethazine just one time?... and this was 4 months ago?

Has there been any improvement in your symptoms over the last 4 months? Do you have a safe place to live now?

Many people who have been damaged by these kinds of drugs find  fish oil and magnesium helpful, see King of Supplements: Omega 3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil) and Magnesium, Nature's Calcium Channel Blocker

Taking magnesium at night can help with sleep because it's calming to the body. Your strength will return slowly, and it will help if you can eat a good, healthy diet and get some gentle exercise regularly.

If you can, have some counseling with a therapist who uses talk therapy, rather than drugs, then you will have some support with working through life problems.

If you have any questions, just ask them here on your thread.

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

Thank you all for your reply.

This was indeed the first time I took these kind of drugs. Before This incident I took a lot of hemeopathic medication. I took RAW honey, blackseed, fenugreek and garlic. After the haldol and promethazine I noticed the homeopathic medicines just don't have the positive effects like they used to have. I also started to notice digestive issues wich I didn't have before the haldol and promethazine. And because of that I stopoed using the homeopathic meds. I am afraid that there really is a permanent damage in the brain and CNS. In the months after the incident I noticed slight relief from my symptons but shortly after it flared up. It has been going like that on and off. After the incident I always noticed an increased size of the upper belly. Could it be that the haldol and promethazine triggered an infection? Cause a infection can be cured but with brain damage and neurological damage i have no idea where to start. I hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks for clarifying the street drug issue.   Many people find that with meds. like you had supplements can be too stimulating.

This site recommends magnesium and omega 3 oils , look at the top in the Symptoms and Self care section.

Digestive problems are common too , again , look in Symptoms and Self care to see other people's experiences , and ideas

on ways to help manage them.

The "on and off" periods of symptoms is common , affectionately known here as "windows and waves".   As you improve the

waves of symptoms will become less frequent and less intense , and the windows with little to no symptoms will become longer

and stronger.

I'm sorry you've landed in this mess , but you've arrived in a place here with loads of information , and we all believe you.

Thank you for the information.

It will really help to hear from people who took the same drugs and how they coped with it.

It may seem like a little incident but it really maked me desperate. This haldol and promethazine is a very strong instant tranquilizer. It quickly shuts down the body. In that proces it must do sonecreally good damage to the body.

4 months ago I was forced to take 5 mg haldol and 50 mg promethazine in oral form because the clinic said I was aggressive. I never returned to my former healthy state after that. I really don't think I will ever recover. It has been 4 montgs niw and I barely foun any imorovement. I still am light headed. My legs feel weak. my metabolism dropped a lot. My character changed.

Please has anyone experienced something similair after taking the same drug? If it would recover it would have by now. Please help

Hi moe

How long did you take these meds for? How did you stopped them?

I suffer from depression, anxiety, pure-o ocd, and panic attacks since 2004. Been on multiple different psychiatric drugs since 2006. Never had a significant WD problem before, only brain zaps for a month and then I'd be fine...............Been on Cipralex (escitalopram) 15 mg and Fluanxol (flupentixol) 1 mg since Sep 2014. Stopped taking the Cipralex after a fast 20-day taper.Took the last 5 mg Cipralex on Feb 5th, 2015. Then took Seroxat (paroxetine) 10 mg for a week, and stopped it too. Severe WD started suddenly on Feb 16th. RI 5 mg Cipralex on Feb 18th, 2015. RI worked and was relatively stable for a while................April 7 - decreased Fluanxol from 1 mg to 0.5 mg and took it at this dose for a week. - BIG MISTAKE; April 13 - WD starts creeping in; April 14 - RI full dose of Fluanxol 1 mg => severe muscle twitching and jerking when trying to relax and fall asleep, overwhelming sense of doom, dread, terror, and horror, insomnia, hoping to stabilize.
Tried doing a 10% cut off Fluanxol in the end of May for a few days, but quickly updosed to full dose because the twitching returned.
Experiencing waves and windows in the following months.
Unsuccessful brief taper attempt of Fluanxol by 5% on November 1st. Symptoms hit the next day. Too scared to continue tapering, reinstate full dose.
Severe crash in November after stupidly trying a barbiturate on November 9th. Grave mistake. Sense of unshakable inescapable internal torture, like my soul is in hell being tortured, terror/horror/dread/doom (probably akathisia?) that gets especially bad when trying to relax and fall asleep, muscles twitch, jerk and move on their own, shaking, insomnia, can't eat, confusion, disorientation, brain not working normally. Never felt so bad in my entire life. Never experiment with other meds while in WD! Praying to God I stabilize and get back to my baseline.
December - things getting even worse.

January - unbearable suffering

That is the thing I only took them once! I was at a clinic where I wanted to leave they said I was to aggressive and to calm me down they gave me that. It was only once and after thatI never took it again.

I still rememver how my heart was pounding very irregular and I was gasping for air after they forced me to take it.

Please I search the entire net and neverdo I find someone who took the same drugs. Please help!

Have you taken any drugs prior to that? We have a user on the forum, akakoom, who only took 3 pills and is currently suffering for a while from some adverse reaction, you can check out his thread. My guess is that you will recover, but your brain probably needs more time. Welcome to the forum. You will find lots of support and advice here.

No I haven't taken any drugs prior to that. Only risperdal 1 mg for a day or two but couldn't stand it so I stopped. But after a few days without the risperdal I felt normal again. But the promethazine and haldol really destroyd me. I am afraid there is also damage in the CNS. It also had really negative effects on my digestion. Any honest advice will help me now, cause even it may seem as a one time experience, I know myself and I never been myself since then.

I tried to force myself to exercise a lot because I heard exercise is good for neuroplasticity of the brain. After 4 months with so much exercise my personality isn't back to its former state? What will bring recovery then? I also sleep very light and never get up feeling rested. I can't describe what I really am going through. I really would find some help if someone would tell me he or she experienced the same kinda poison I was made to ingest.

Moeroe ,  when did you take the risperdal ... was that before the incident and hospital admission?  It may not seem important but

I think it is.

The risperdal was during the adnission but before thehaldol and promethazine. But it was just 1mg. Compare that to 5 mg haldol and 50 mg promethazine! And that risperdal only bothered me for a day or two. Then I didn't noticed it anymore.

The effects can be cumulative - chances are you reacted so badly to the haldol  because it was on top of the risperdal.

So that's two anti-psychotics.

You had a severe adverse reaction , and as you're finding it takes a long time to regain your former self.   Be gentle with yourself ,

try to eat simple , natural foods , and rest alot.

Are there people who never took any psychiatric medication and then were admitted in a psychiatric facility, not because they had psychoses, but were homeless at a point? And while they were there refused any kind of medication that were offered to them. And then wanted to leave the place and got angry. Then was forced to take medication to 'calm down'. Then find your body in total disarray. Digestion is ruined. Feeling tired all the time. Persobality change. Insomnia. Restless legs. Needing to quit Job and school. Seeing your body get skinnier every week. And then being told to leave the facility and being homeless again.

I am talking about 5mg haldol and 50 mg promethazine. Is there anyone who experienced these combination of meds?

I searched everywhere but found nothing.

Please if you know soneone Please Let me know.

moeroe, I moved your post here.

In the Introductions forum:

  • Use search for "haldol" to find discussions about it.
  • Use search again to see discussions of "promethazine"
  • Use search again to see discussions about being forced to take an "antipsychotic"

In the US, newer antipsychotics such as Seroquel, Zyprexa, or Risperdal are prescribed much more frequently than older drugs such as haldol and promethazine.

People are prescribed all kinds of combinations of drugs. You might not find your exact combination, but experiences on the antipsychotics tend to be similar.

Quite a few people here were forced to take drugs in the hospital, or were prescribed drugs they did not know they could refuse. This is not unusual.

Please read other Introductions topics, you will see you are not alone.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.
