Miko789: tapering off Seroxat / Paxil / paroxetine and Risperdal

Miko789

Recommended Posts

I have a dilemma. In March 16 I was on 1mg seroxat and I was stable, no vertigo at all. I talked with my new doctor today and I informed him that I reinstated seroxat and he didn't accept that the vertigo was caused by seroxat but that is his opinion. I know it did.The next day 5th of April I had vertigo. What is the best option to do now? Should I  updose to 2 drops from 1drop or  return to the 1mg seroxat when I was stable 45 days ago?

thanks

Hi Miko,

If you "jumped off" at 1 mg paxil (Seroxat), that is probably the problem. It doesn't seem like much of a change, but it is.

How much is in a drop (you said 1 drop or two drops)? (And how many drops is 1 mg?)

You might want to do a search on this site for reinstatement.

2020: After 18+ years (entire adult life) on Paxil, a dangerous doctor-led "taper" in 2015, and four years tapering off the last 1 mg thanks to SA and the Brassmonkey slide,

I AM COMPLETELY FREE OF PAXIL! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Forever.

2021: Began conservative, proper, CNS-respecting taper of Zoloft, led by the only expert on me -- me. Making own liquid. 5-10% plus holds.

2022: Holding on Zoloft for now. Current dose 47 mg. Hanging in, hanging on. Severe protracted PAWS, windows and waves. While I may not be doing "a lot" by outside standards, things are graaaaadually getting better

Yoga (gentle to medium); walks; daily breath practice; nutrition, fruits/veg; nature; water; EastEnders (lol); practicing self-compassion, self-care; boundaries; connection; allowing feelings; t r u s t ing that I, too, will heal. (--> may need to be reminded of this.)

I attribute the vertigo due to drop of seroxat and stress,I had stress for the result of the examination and it made it worse, . The result was ok though

Hi Miko; you're welcome. Glad the vertigo has subsided somewhat. It seems that the lower doses are the most difficult. You're so close to being off it -- please hang in there and I encourage you to go as slowly as possible.

Hi Miko-- I'm glad that the reinstatement is kicking in and helping things.  It's hard to believe but the last 1mg of Seroxat is very important to taper slowly.  Some people can be very sensitive to the least little change at that level.  It would be a god idea to give yourself plenty of time to restabilize before continuing to taper.  Once you're stable then I would suggest diluting your liquid so you can get much smaller decreases per liquid drop. It will make the decreases gentler and reduce the risk of symptoms after you make the final jump.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Thanks I will go slowly from 1mg seroxat.3 drops

HI everyone

I'm going to get liquid risperidone 1mg/1ml concetration to taper it off. What IF the pharmacist asks  why I don't have a prescription. What I answer him?

Should I ask him the equivalent dosage oral to 25mg long acting injection or I make him angry?

thanks

Hi Miko,

Not sure, but it's a pretty good bet the meds are the culprit. As far as if it will improve, I'd say there is every chance that you will. Look at all the success stories here on this site. <3

Since I stopped the risperdal I've seen only positive changes in my life. My energy levels are higher, I go to the gym every other day, I kept going while on risperdal though, wasn't easy but I pushed my self to go.I can think more clearly and pick things apart more. Also me and my girlfriend which I told her that I'm tapering off the drugs she's very supportive and wants me to come off. The only downside is a bit dizziness I have, is tolerable though doesnt keep me from doing the things I like.

I waited 5 weeks for the injection to wean off and I restarted liquid Risperidone on Wednesday because I had dizziness and now I have brain fog.Is it withdrawal from the switch from the injection to the liquid risperidone.? Should I've waited longer for the injection to leave my body and then take the liquid?

Please some advice

I post the drug interaction guide and I see that risperidone and zyprexa may increase side effects such as dizziness , drowsiness and memory problems.

Which of the two antipsychotic is easier to taper  risperdal or zyprexa?

I have only one choice

If I choose to keep zyprexa I'll have to make liquid for the tablet (orodipsersible) which is painslaking but I'll get rid of risperdal which is making lifeless.

If I choose to keep risperdal I'll have to use the liquid which I currently have but I'll get rid of zyprexa which makes me slugglish and drowsy in the morning.

thanks for sharing yr experience

Hi. Successful zyprexa quitter here. You can't know anything with this cr*p, but one theory is that drug half-life affects the easiness of withdrawal. Olanzapine's half-life is 33 hours, risperidone's - 20. That's even worse than amisulpride, which I withdrew in a month and which messed me up.

Another thing to be concerned about is that the drugs don't necessarily have the same impact on various receptors. Their binding affinity is different, meaning olanzapine binds more potently to some receptors, but weaker to other. So if you're switching from risperidone to olanzapine, maybe that could create some sort of disturbance, as your brain is addicted to a particular drug that deregulates it in a certain way, so maybe there isn't enough D1, or D2 receptor blockage there to achieve a similar effect. That's by the way only another theory, since that's precisely what I did after the amisulpride withdrawal messed me up, 4 months later I reinstated APs, but olanzapine instead and then successfully withdrew it in 10 months. So, I would recommend olanzapine. It doesn't take that much time to dissolve it anyway (not so much with generics, which in my experience don't dissolve at all).

1 year risperidone, 1 year olanzapine (10 mg). attempted first withdrawal cold turkey, failed. 2 more years olanzapine, switched to abilify which was very disruptive so attempted quitting cold turkey, failed. then 4 years amisulpride at 150 mg and about 3 zoloft at 150 mg. attempted withdrawal from both in 3 weeks, failed. reinstated zoloft and bridged to olanzapine (10 mg), successfully withdrew it over 10 months. tried withdrawing zoloft over 12 months, failed. bridged to prozac, at 40 mg,  now at 12 mg.

My bad, apparently it's not worse than amisulpride, I wrongly remembered it was 20ish hours, but it's 12. So the longer half-life the better, according to that theory.

Not sure what you mean, Miko, when you wrote, "I'll go with olanzapine."  Just to clarify: when tapering two medications in the same class, e.g. "anti-psychotic" drugs,  it's probably best to taper the medication with the shortest half-life first and continue the dose of the medication with the longer half-life.

I wouldn't taper anything for a while. At least a month. I fear you will destabilise yourself badly: stopping risperdal too quickly, restarting...

This is really not time for even thinking about further tapering. Yes feeling sluggish and drowsy is not pleasant but as you probably know there are much worse symptoms and I believe you don't want to go there.

People who can't put up with their symptoms and constantly adjust their drugs are not likely to have a successful taper.

Miko,

What are you using for sleep?

Risperidone made me linger on single thought that is the name of sizodan LS (risperidone). It erased my memory and ceased all unwanted, excessive thoughts.

Risperidone Cold turkey after one month use due to ignorance made my brain sleepless and suffer with dreams.

On the other side, olanzapine won't seize thoughts, but make you have all positive and normal stature.Gives good night sleep.

As so many people claimed on internet, olanzapine is not caused my weight gain or no side effects.

My pdoc prescribed me trihexyphenidyl 2 mg  which saves from antipsychotic induced side effects.

Cold turkeyed risperidone (1m.g)and trihexyphenidyl combination drug out of ignorance,In August 2016 after one month use.

Withdrawal symptoms settled at dreamful, disturbing sleep.

Thus introduced to olanzapine for sleep.Started using olanzapine out of ignorance.

Tapering olanzapine 10 m.g from February 2017.

May 2018 :Still suffering dreams,Still tapering olanzapine at 0.625.100ml water+2.5 mg olanzapine. June 2018 22.5ml=0.57mg.July 2018 20ml,August 2018-17.5ml,September 2018-15ml,October 2018 10 ml,December 2018 7 ml, BrassMonkey slide method so far at lower doses.2 nd December cold turkeyed , only to reach minure doses as reinstatement to cutshort endless tapering process.4rth December started 1ml.

Almost no symptoms and sleep is better,So started 0.5 ml from 17-12-2018.

"0"from31-12-18.Re birth happened from 10- 2020,as rejuvenation took whole2019.Completely recovered now.

I don't see anything wrong with taking turmeric (which contains curcumin), i've taken it with an anti-psychotic without any problems, some people eat the stuff all the time as it is part of their culture, i think it's in curry powder.

be careful with adaptogenic herbs although they are good for the body they might interact with medications, sometimes a reaction of herb vs. drug could really mess a person up.

In March 2016 i suffered from a paranoia/schizophrenic episode which resulted in me taking risperidone/risperdal 3mg for about 3 weeks along with a couple 7mg long acting injections.  i had an intense withdrawal after stopping cold turkey and i have been off risperidone ever since then.

2001 - 2005 prozac,  2001 - 2017 various benzos, mainly diazapem and zanex,  2002 - 2017 olanzapine or seroquel,  2002 -2017 propanolol, 2005 - 2009 venlafaxine 75mg , forced to go cold turkey off venlafaxine as moved Thailand, doctor cut me off and couldn't get it there, severely ill for over 2 years, countered withdrawals with more zanex and seroquel

2014 returned to UK, mainly to get treatment getting off meds

doctor advised to taper seroquel over a few weeks, severely ill and bed bed-bound so reinstated it, 2015 tapered seroquel myself slower over a few months, was off it 2 months and was too ill so went on olanzapine, became zombie and too tired to get out of bed, went back on seroquel, very depressed so went back on venlafaxine, didnt work  so doctor swapped to zoloft became very agitated so back on venlafaxine

June 2016 - felt strong enough to begin tapering again, started what I thought was a slow taper of all meds,  2016 July Not had any alcoholic drink since this date,

2016 October completely off diazepem, 2017 Feb completely off seroquel, 2017 March completely off proponanlol, 2017 April (day before birthday) completely off venlafaxine, OFF ALL MEDS 11/4/2017, was fine for nearly 3 months and then delayed withdrawal hit,

supplements taking: turmeric capsules, NiaCel (nicotinamide riboside), Vit B12 sublingual, Vit B3, Vit B6, Vit B1, apple cider vinegar, manuka umf 10 honey, camu camu powder,  melatonin when needed, epsom salt baths, juices, smoothies,

Mucuna pruriens has helped people but it is on the stronger side of herbs and contains L-dopa which is definitely a sign that it should not be taken as long as a dopamine antagonist is in one's system.  just because something is over the counter doesn't mean it's 100% safely interactive with prescription drugs, especially anti-psychotics.
