Hi everyone.Ive been taking sertraline, amytrypitine and diazepam since the late 90's.I'm in my 14th of week of withdrawals from all of these.I'm waking up every morning with bitchin, crippling anxiety.Ive cut out things like trans fats, caffiene , alchohol , sugar and all the other things that raise cortisol.Im taking fish oils and eating healthy fresh foods .I'm using a sleep mask which helps a little when I do get a good sleep.

I feel so angry at myself for being so complacent while I was on these medications.I realise now I've started on this awakening how cold and indifferent I must have seemed to others.I'm neither of these things in reality.

I know I came off these drugs too quick but that is done now.I'm so lucky to have such an understanding wife and family which I want to be healthy for. Please if you think I could be doing something different tell me.thankyou.

Sertraline 100mg amytrip 60mg diazepam 4mg (and when needed) since late 90's.Reduced all meds over 6 wks (too short) last doses 13 wks ago.Still having withdrawals.I would have done it differently

5th august 2015 reinstated 5mg amytripiline.increased to 10mg amtrip 9th sept 2015.

I'm drug free.My sleep pattern has been changing as the weeks have gone on.At the moment I,m exausted by 9 pm and can usually get to sleep within an hour then I can awaken several times through the night. If im awake at 5am I usually am unable to get back to sleep.

The crippling anxiety in the morning suggests withdrawal syndrome, but it's impossible to tell which drug caused it (it could be all of them) because you went off all at once.

Benzo withdrawal alone can be brutal, and you've been taking these drugs for decades, which increases the risk of withdrawal syndrome, which can last for months or years.

I'm going to make a guess -- reinstatement of a small amount of amitriptyline, say 5mg, might reduce withdrawal symptoms, at least from the antidepressants. You would stabilize on this for some months, then taper off by tiny amounts.

Nobody wants to reinstate. Read some of the other Intro topics and see what people with prolonged discontinuation syndrome are going through to inform your decision.

Yes, your brain will recover. It will take at least 4 days for the 5mg amitriptyline to take effect.

After that, you'll need to let your nervous system settle down for some months.

Please let us know how you are doing.

I would give the 5mg amitriptyline a week to see what it's doing.

Hi Nomoreheadmeds

I hope that things settle for you soon. You have come to the best place for support and understanding.

You are so right about patience. Since WD I have had one of the biggest lessons to learn in life - to be patient!

Unfortunately, there is no quick fix for this. I had to reinstate but now I am feeling so much better - just wanted to let you know that this can work.

Hang in there.

Best Wishes

My anxiety seems to be coming back.It is for about two hours upon waking an hour or so in the afternoon and again at night before I go to sleep. The anxiety is followed by shivering episodes which can last a couple of minutes then a period of doom and gloom.A definite change in the symptom pattern.

It may take you a while to settle down and symptoms can change on a daily basis for some! It's so horrible to wake with anxiety but that is a classic symptom of WD.

Yes Flowers I am.My sleep is deeper and I get more from it I think. When my symptom pattern change I think what does this mean. Its probably the reinstatement that changed the pattern.I started taking vit d3 , calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese, copper, selenium and boron all in one supplement. It hasnt caused any upset stomach so all good.

I'm glad you are feeling a bit better.

My goodness, you managed to get all those supplements in one? Wow! I don't want to be a party pooper but feel I need to alert you to something about this if you don't mind.

Of course you may know already. Some supplements can cause side effects like as you say upset stomach or sometimes increase anxiety. If you take them all at once you may not know which one is causing the problem.  I just started with  magnesium only  but unfortunately it upset my tummy even on a low dose so I had to stop! I am OK with fish oil though.

I am doing well thank you. I had a bit of a blip over the weekend when I went to watch a firework display on the beach. I think the bright lights and bangs must have triggered something in my CNS as yesterday I felt dreadful. Today I am a little better so hope that is going to be the trend. I have been leading a tranquil life in WD so the fireworks which I love were probably a bit too much for me. Grrrhhhh!!

Yes fish oil did increase my anxiety slighty I have stooped that for a while. My new supplements I've only had one dose so I'll watch out for what you have said.

At night is when I am over sensitive to sound and light perhaps one day we all will enjoy normal everyday activities that we once did.

Thanks again Flowers for reading my posts and the advice.

Hi NMHM

Sometimes this is just like being on a rollercoaster isn't it?!  Do you have any coping techniques for the anxiety? I found gentle walking somehow helped although I didn't feel like it.

I know what you mean about natural sleep. If I manage to nod off in the afternoons I feel so good afterwards. I think my sleep at night is drug induced after taking my drug. I just don't feel the same when I wake up but am glad that I can sleep OK now.

I am OK thanks. Just have the odd blip here and there if something triggers my nervous system.

Glad that some days are a little easier for you.

It sounds like you are in a wave Nomore, this can happen as part of the stabilization process, it will pass, read through this topic again:

The Windows and Waves Pattern of Stabilization

See this topic for ideas of how to manage the symptoms until they pass:

Non-drug techniques to cope with emotional symptoms

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

My Introduction Thread

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

Thank you. NMHM.   I really appreciate your concern .  I'm so sorry you've had such a bad time.  Hang in there, it will hopefully get better. I'm the same with "no sleep". It gets to you after a while .  It does your "head in".   For me , I get highly emotional.

Thanks again.   Ali.
