L-Lysine

Hello,

I am wondering what the general wisdom is on L-Lysine. Apparently, it is a well documented natural herpes treatment. I have Chronic EBV and would like to try L-Lysine, but very nervous about side effects and interactions with respect to SSRI's.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

2006-2013: Amitriptyline 25mg QD at bedtime.

Oct 2014: Clonazepam 0.5mg at night for sleep. Gabapentin 600mg x2 daily for pain.

Dec 2014: CT Clonazepam & Gabapentin on doctor’s instruction, because it wasn't helping symptoms. Caused severe depression, anxiety, panic attacks. ER due to 3 days of no sleep. ER administered Lorazepam IV.

Dec 2014: Lorazepam - 0.250mg AM,  0.125mg PM, 0.250mg Beftime; Zoloft - 50mg

Feb 15 - March 11, 2015: Tapered Lorazepam at 0.125 mg ever 5 days. Too fast and very difficult.

June 1 - Oct 12, 2015: Tapered Zoloft from 50mg at 12.5 mg every 4 weeks. Last 2 weeks I took 12.5 mg every other day. Then CT'd at 12.5 mg.

Dec 4, 2015: Reinstated Zoloft 12.5 mg.

Nov 2018: 12.5 mg to 6.25 mg. Held for 2 months then CT'd 6.25 mg on Jan 26.

Feb 16, 2019: Reinstated Zoloft 5 mg

Dec 2019: CT Zoloft 5 mg. Did okay until August 2020.

My standard advice for supplements.   Start low (meaning take 1/2 the starting dose) and increase it very slowly like every 3 to 7 days.   This caution is warranted because many people in withdrawal are very hypersensitive to even non drug remedies.

Good luck.

Drug cocktail 1995 - 2010
Started taper of Adderall, Wellbutrin XL, Remeron, and Doxepin in 2006
Finished taper on June 10, 2010

Temazepam on a PRN basis approximately twice a month - 2014 to 2016

Beginning in 2017 - Consumption increased to about two times per week

April 2017 - Increased to taking it full time for insomnia

Found a couple publications on L-Lysine relating to anxiety:

"Dietary supplementation with an essential amino acid L-lysine has been shown to reduce chronic anxiety in humans with low dietary intake of L-lysine."

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17510493

"At least part of the explanation for the stress-reducing effect of the lysine-arginine combination is probably that lysine interacts with the receptor for GABA. Sleeping pills and alcohol also work via the same receptor... The amino acids reduced the men’s cortisol concentrations by 18 percent. The researchers took their measurements between 9 and 10 in the morning."

http://www.prozis.com/blog/en/lysine-larginine-stress-cortisol/

"Sadly, cortisol reduction with the use of lysine has shown to be reduced in males but not in women. That is why there should be further study that explains why the effects of lysine as ananxietybuster work well for males but not as much on women. Taking about 2.64 grams of the amino acid has shown significant results on males that were suffering from mental anxiety and stress."

I tried 500 mg Lysine at lunch time on day 1 and didn't notice any positive or negative affects.

Tried 1000 mg Lysine on day 2. 500 mg at lunch and 500 mg at 8 PM. Also didn't notice any positive or negative affects.

My primary reason for trying Lysine is to fight EBV. I guess I need to work up slowly to 2000 mg per day for several months.

I have taken L-Lysine and B12 since I got shingles last year.

The pain wasn't going away and the doc prescribed me Lyrica to stop the pain.

It was the most amazing high I have ever had and the first time I felt NORMAL and things didn't irritate me and I wanted to HORDE it and make it last as long as possible.

So, given my experience with meds that make me high (what goes up must come down) I stopped immediately, got low for a fornight and it was fine.

Some googling and L-Lysine and B12 stopped shingles pain immediately, and no more need for Lyrica. Phew.

Still love the stuff though and every time I go to the GP I eye off the Lyrica sample boxes and think about how many of those boxes I can run out with

Prescribed Lexapro in 2003 and switched to Cipramil (5-10mg per day) 2004 with Lamictal.

Stopped Lamictal cold turkey with no withdrawals in 2014 with support of a Paleo diet.

Lysine helps me get to sleep fairly well, but if I go too much above 1200mg something feels wrong, and it can keep me awake instead.   I like to combine it with ornithine and glycine for extra growth hormone release and often even better sleep.

1997-2019 Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, Effexor, Serzone, Wellbutrin, Amitryptiline, Mirtazapine, Lexapro (mostly, 10-20mg)

Jan 16-Feb 2019 Fast tapered Lexapro after spontaneous kundalini syndrome

Feb-Jul Used various herbs to deal with severe anxiety (bacopa, gotu kola)

Sept 2019 Developed histamine intolerance and daily panic

Currently taking high DHA fish oil, magnesium.  Occasionally l-ornithine, l-lysine, l-glycine, melatonin for sleep.  Dayvigo for sleep, and l-thp or seroquel (haven't settled on dose) for sleep when in sleep deprivation crisis
