How to handle anticipatory anxiety?

slowphie

Recommended Posts

Hi. I’ve been awake since 3:40am, shaking, trembling and crying because of the mess I’m in.

I’ve been experiencing lorazepam withdrawal after staying on it reluctantly, lonnger than I wanted, convinced by doctors.

The rebound lack of appetite and insomnia was making me miserable and I started Mirtazapine. I asked the psychiatrist if this could be difficult to stop, if it would turn me into a life-long insomniac, and he said it would be “fine”. 😞 I should have known to stop trusting doctors at that point, I feel so stupid.

Earlier this week, someone in the benzorecovery subreddit warned me about Mirta and I started researching and realising how difficult this could be to stop too.

Since then, I have been waking up every night after 2-4 hours shaking and paralyzed with anxiety, feeling so sick and overwhelmed.

I almost feel hopeless, like giving up. How do you guys deal with the anticipatory anxiety of tapering? I don’t know what to do, I don’t know who to ask for help. I don’t know how to calm myself down rn, I don’t know how to stop being afraid.

I feel like I’ve screwed myself and wish I had just accepted the rebound insomnia. I know some people personally who have been on Mirta and stopped CT after 5/8 weeks without issues, another friend was on for 18 months and tapered for 3 months okay. However, what I’ve read here makes me feel like that even with a 2 year taper, I’m going to be sick, mostly at home, not having a life for years.

Can anyone give me any sense of hope?

Sorry for this ramble, I’m just feeling so so lost, hopeless and alone. I look at photos from 5 months ago and cry my eyes out, I just don’t understand how my life got to this point. 😭

You need to get back on lorazepam, even a low dose like take a 0.5mg, you need to stablize you jumped too quick, how long did you taper for?

Klonopin Mar 2013 - Feb 2021 - used .000 gram scale to cut pills did very slowly from 2017-2021, had no issues stopping after final dose that was sub .5mg diazepam equivalent (If anyone wants advice for tapering Klonopin with a gram scale, feel free to ask!)

tapered off zyprexa twice over 2 weeks in my 20's, had little issue with that after about 3-4 years of use both times.

Prozac 40MG for 5 years - 2016 - 2021 (Total of 13 years of consecutive use)

(Most recent after last break, been on cumulatively in my life 14 years all times combined, 3 separate on/off occasions, all successful except most recent 3/4)

Recent Issue:  Tapered gradually from 40MG down to 0MG from May 7th - Aug 18th

Felt fine through Oct 5th, slowly started getting depression, panic, and anxiety (Was original thing I was treated for)

Decided to go back on SSRI Nov 1st, reacted very bad to 20mg reinstatement, day 1 was fine, day 2 had ADR. Doctor said to drop dosage.

Took 5mg for 2 weeks, 10mg for 2 weeks, still felt physically sick, could not take 20mg for more than 3 days, looking for advice going forward (ADR)

Not happy about it, but on 1.5mg 3x ativan and temazepam 15mg for sleep

(Was sleeping 2-3 hrs nightly prior to temazepam, was first thing that broke 2-3 hr then wide awake sleep cycle)

Main symptoms: headaches from certain foods and meds, sleep is broken, anxiety and agitation is extremely high, cortisol spike sensitive, bad in morning better at night, panic attacks, concentration is awful, focus is awful, anhedonia is awful, sensitive to light and noise, especially noise, extreme depression, intense bouts of fear, every looks and feels 'scary' at times, stress tolerance extremely low, have bouts of extreme anxiety, and bouts akathesia, and bouts extreme anticipatory anxiety over basic events/tasks. Nervous system is clearly crashed.

No Prozac for 249 days.

No way, I’m not going back on lorazepam. It’s almost been a month. I jumped from 0.25mg and a lot of the benzo WD symptoms are fading. I just started having insane anxiety after reading a lot of Mirtazapine horror stories. I’m scared :(

Hi @slowphie

I am sorry that you are struggling with these feelings of anxiety - they are likely exacerbated by the withdrawal. Please find the thread on neuroemotions on the site. These kinds of obsessive thoughts and fears are part of the withdrawal symptoms.

You may or may not have withdrawal effects from mirtazapine especially now that you know how to taper slowly. Withdrawal can be minimized by proper tapering. Even if you did have some withdrawal effects they will likely be minimal with proper tapering and holding.

Are you familiar with CBT at all? You are catastrophizing and fortunetelling.

Have a look here.

I’m not sure why that individual told you to reinstate the benzo. I would definitely not reinstate if I were you.

I am in a similar situation. I recently finished withdrawing from Klonopin (a benzo) and am now withdrawing from Amitriptyline, a sedating antidepressant. I am extremely scared too. My psych has already said she wants to give me Mirtazapine after I finish the Amitriptyline. I said no.

What I am trying to remember is that while all psych withdrawal can be bad, benzos are particularly known for their horrific withdrawal side effects. There are who people withdraw from antidepressants with little symptoms. Remember that the people on this site are here to find community due bad withdrawal. There are people who taper from antidepressants like Mirtazapine fine. Try not to read too many horror stories.

Klonopin 2 mg (2020-2021) (Klonopin free as of Nov. 2021!)

Lamotrigine 200 mg (2020-2021); Seroquel 50 mg (2021)

Hey, thanks so much for the response!

How are you feeling after jumping off Klonopin? I’m day 48 free, and whilst many side effects have faded - thankfully, I’m still left with really bad fatigue, horrendous blurry vision, some headaches and feeling too hot frequently. I’m really hoping to slowly start tapering off Mirtazapine at day 90. Good luck with your next taper. ☺️

I was feeling pretty good overall. Way better than during withdrawal! For two months after I took my last dose, things were almost normal, with the exception of a few lingering symptoms like panic.

This week has been hard; I did my first Amitriptyline cut last week and I do feel it. But I am trying to be hopeful that it is temporary. I think waiting until day 90 is a good idea. I waited 60 days and I wonder if that was too soon.

Ugh, I’m sorry it’s tough, but that’s amazing you were already feeling better. I really want to get Mirtazapine lowered because I’m worried about how it could be impacting my health, but I still feel so unhealthy. 😞 It’s so frustrating to know that all of this was preventable, and I got into this mess by very reluctantly going along with doctors. Thank you! Me too. I really look forward to the days when this is all behind me, nothing but a bad, blurry memory. I actually started blogging about this experience in the meantime, so I’m not bottling up my thoughts, and to perhaps spread even a tiny bit of awareness. I’m so disgusted by psychiatry and the total lack of informed consent. 😤

@slowphie I think we all here are pretty much dissapointed that people that are supposed to be healers are in fact making problem worse, from what I've seen moderators advise to first stabilise and then start with tapering, as too fast a taper may make things worse

Duloxetine 2016/17 - 30/60mg/30mg, c/t, light WD.

Sertraline June 2019 50mg ADR

Clorazepate June 2019 20-15-10mg for 3 weeks then sparsely until 2022, 2 times per month max and very low dose (5mg)

Clorazepate Jan2022 10mg 5 days 2,5mg 2 days then off

Venlafaxine June 2019 75mg ADR, 17,5mg, titrated to 37,5mg

Venlafaxine Jan 2022 Covid, hard ADR on 37,5mg, reduced to 20mg ADR, tried ct, crash,

Venlafaxine 22Jan22 reinstated 9,4mg, too low/ 01Feb22- 12mg/ 12Feb- 11,25mg/ 16Feb- 11mg/ 20Feb- 10,8mg/ 24Feb22-10,575mg/ 16Mar22- 10,46mg/ 26Mar22- 10,35mg/ 26Apr22- 10mg/ 01Oct- 9,9mg/ 13Nov- 9,7mg

01Jan24-7,5mg

MAR24

Due to another sudden intolerance had to fast taper venlafaxine to 1,14mg

Seems like all of this time I was in benzo withdrawal, because when I took it now in desperation to help it made me feel worse, tried reinstatement first 1mg, then 0,05mg both made me feel worse.

@Vasherrhey, yes… I’m definitely trying to be careful. However, Mirtazapine isn’t making me sleepy at all anymore, and I think it’s actually causing headaches and might even be contributing to my vision problems. So I’m going to have to try cutting it down a little, I’ll start with 2% drops though. If I could survive a benzo rapid taper (not by choice, I got pushed into it), I hope my brain will be able to handle a 2% drop.

2015-16 - Desvenlafaxine 35.7mg for 10 months, rapid taper without incident.

September 2021 - December 2021 Lorazepam peak 2.5mg, jumped from 0.25mg

October ‘21 - November ‘21 - Milnacipran up to 100mg for 3 weeks, rapid tapered off in one week at my insistence, horrible side efffects on medication, including two days of Akathisia.

November 2nd - November 12th ‘21 - 7.5mg Mirtazapine

November 13th ‘21 - February 8th ‘22  - Mirtazapine 15mg

@slowphie I too am planning to do a very small drop after I stabilise to test the waters, because I need to be able to go to work, so from my perspective it is a reasonable idea :)

@Vasherr I understand. Slow and steady wins the race! I’m officially on sick leave, so I don’t need to worry about work… I do miss being productive, but as a designer, there’s no chance with my drug/withdrawal induced vision problems as they are atm. 😞

hoping your taper will be really smooth.

@slowphie Thank You very much, I too am hopeful that my taper will go without difficulties, and wish You the same :)

My sick leave ends in a week, I'm pretty lucky that I work from home, because going to the office would be pretty much terrifying right now 😜
