Hey!  I am a Kiwi, I don't have any real life support I want to draw on, have been isolating I guess, due to fatigue.  An online forum was incredible for helping me get sober, I would really appreciate connecting with other people on here.

I am going to start taper tomorrow, as I have ten days leave off work still.

Nice to meet you all :)

Oh, and it was doing my head in trying to add a photo as I am orientating myself to a mac system and don't know how to find my photos and make them small for upload :/

I will get to it!

Thanks

I sleep easily, I wake and go to work early

Loxamine 20 MG 2 years and 5 months :/

Before the loxamine, I was rationing out and getting as many Benzos from my dr as I could, I was trying my hardest not to start antidepressants again, that went on for maybe 2 months, I really don't remember.
18 months before that, short nasty stint on citalapram. Went cold turkey. Brain zaps etc. Was awful but doable.

I have had cascading depression since (chicken or the egg?) I quit alcohol after 10 years of drinking alcoholically and having no success with quitting.  AA was the catalyst for success.   5 years sober and smoke free and zopiclone free for maybe 4 years.  I was really hooked on zopiclone while drinking then say six months after.

Hi homeandaway, from one kiwi to another welcome.

I see you live in auckland ...know it well ...then i moved south.

You say start taper tomorrow.

Are you able to fillout a drug signature and tell us from what drug you are going to taper? and how are you planning to do it.

Putting a SHORT version of your recent history of reducing or discontinuing drugs in your signature, with the drugs you are currently taking and their dosages, helps people understand your context when they read your posts.

If your drug history is very long, the last few years will do.

Your signature appears under all your posts.

See instructions in this topic: Please put your withdrawal history in your signature

cheers

I have assumed you are tapering off psychotropic drugs, this site can provide support and help to do that safely.

Thanks oh maybe you had and i missed it anyway got it now.

Loxmine =paroxetine=aropax=paxil=seroxat =drisdelle= deroxat = a whole heap of other names.

There is a lot of information here about the importance of making changes slowly, keeping the nervous system stable and why this is important.  The rule of 3KIS: Keep it simple. Keep it slow. Keep it stable.

It appears that the withdrawal symptoms from citalopram may have been the reason for loxamine ?

Heres the thread on tapering loxamine/paroxetine

Tips for tapering off Paxil (paroxetine)

Its well worth a read.

Hi homeandaway , welcome to the site. You'll find loads of information here about how to taper safely.

The recommendation is to decrease no more than 10% at a time , and to wait minimum 4 weeks before decreasing again. So your first cut would be to 18mg.

Please read the following threads to help avoid difficulties:

Sept. 2012 -decreased 90mg in 6months. Care taken over by Dr Lucire in March 2013 , decreased last 30mg at 2mg per week over 3 months. July 21 , 2013- last dose of Cymbalta

Protracted withdrawal syndrome kicked in badly Jan.2014 Unrelenting akathisia until May 2014. Voluntary hosp. admission. Cocktail of Seroquel, Ativan and mirtazapine and I was well enough to go home after 14 days. Stopped all hosp. meds in next few months.

July 2014 felt v.depressed - couldn't stop crying. Started pristiq 50mg. Felt improvement within days and continued to improve, so stayed on 50mg for 8 months.

Began taper 28 Feb. 2015. Pristiq 50mg down to 45mg. Had one month of w/d symptoms. Started CES therapy in March. No w/d symptoms down to 30mg.

October 2015 , taking 25mg Pristiq. Capsules compounded with slow-release additive.

Thanks Fresh and NZ11, I woke up this morning and realised that I should aim for more stability before reducing, I am not sure how to make my dosage smaller by those increments, I read the 3K's and taking heed - especially around stability.  Will maybe post this later. Thank you :)  I feel a lot better making this step, finding this forum, but I am also reading the wisdom here.

Morning HAA,

Some people are using a scale to weigh and some are getting liquid ..you could buy a scale on trademe here is a current one for sale

http://www.trademe.co.nz/business-farming-industry/industrial/measuring-scales/auction-1010516944.htm

or you could get liquid either make your own or order it .Another kiwi songbird orders it here is the info on getting liquid in NZ

http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/7803-new-zealand-members-please-check-in-here/?p=200969

If too expensive then you could check out Freshs link on making your own liquid.

Note if you crush and weigh then you will need to work the taper using the pill weight ..

One member weighs 2 pills to gets the weight of a 40mg dose and it is about 500mg -say (you might do this and get a slightly different amount....you could always do it a couple of times to get an average )they then can determine from this that 1mg dose is equivalent to 12.5 mg pill weight. (alternatively 1mg pw is 0.08 active ingredient-ai)

People are then  tapering the pill weight by 10% of previous dose

20mg dose ai being 250 mgpw

There sure is a lot of resources here for sure.

Happy reading

Hi HandA, Welcome to SA (from across the Tasman).  It's great to see someone find this site before tapering the wrong way or CTing.

You've already been given some helpful information and it sounds like you are taking it on board.  Fantastic!!!  This site is very supportive.  Use your Intro topic to ask questions and to journal your tapering progress.

I have discovered that understanding what is happening and knowing that others are having similar issues can help me to stop much of the fear from taking hold.  Just this morning I was very thankful for what I have read here (information and other's experiences) and was able to tell myself that what I was feeling was "normal".  It stopped me from going into panic and meltdown.

These 2 things helped me to understand why it is important to taper slowly and what has and is happening to my brain:  Video: Healing from Antidepressants: Patterns of Recovery & Brain Remodelling

Hello fellow Kiwi,

We have a thread called NZ members check in here which has some local info.

Good call on getting this stable before reducing.  You might find it useful to read through the Symptoms and Self-Care thread too.  Magnesium and Fish oil provide good support during w/d.

With support, the right info and a good plan you can get through all this.  It doesn't happen quickly, but you will be okay.

Best wishes,

Karen

2010  Fluoxetine 20mg.  2011  Escitalopram 20mg.  2013 Tapered badly and destabilised CNS.  Effexor 150mg.

2015 Begin using info at SurvivingAntidepressants.  Cut 10% - bad w/d 2 months, held 1 month.

Micro-tapering: four weekly 0.4% cuts, hold 4 weeks (struggling with symptoms).

8 month hold.

2017 Micro-tapering: four weekly 1% cuts, hold 4 weeks (symptoms almost non-existent).

2020 Still micro-tapering. Just over 2/3 of the way off effexor. Minimal symptoms, - and sleeping well.
Supplements: Fish oil, vitamin C, iron, oat-straw tea, nettle tea.

2023 December - Now on 5 micro-beads Effexor. Minimal symptoms but much more time needed between drops. Symptoms begin to increase.

2024 April - Updosed to 6 microbeads - immediate increase in symptoms for 4 days. Decreased to 5 microbeads.

Welcome, HaA.

You asked elsewhere about splitting your drug dosage. At what time of day do you take loxamine, what is your daily symptom pattern?

Do you take any other drugs?

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

Hi, I hope Im replying in the right way...quote?  Anyway, 5.30 or 6 am weekdays.  I don't really think about symptoms.  With me it could be time of month or having a bad day.  But I want to taper in case its the medication contributing to lethargy and demotivation and an increasing inability to even walk my dog after work.  I do have a really good life.  No excuse for being demotivated.  I have a good job, boyfriend, lots of cool activities to do, and an awesome dog.  I just wondered if I could better realise the seratonin benefits if maybe I shifted half the dose.  Im not sure if there are ebbs and flows relative to when you take the medication?  Thanks for your response!

Hi, just checking in again, the splitting dose stuff is a question I forgot I had.  26th of Jan I had a melt down, I had to go to a different GP than my normal one.  She wanted to change my medication to something starting with V, I forget.  I resisted, got blood tests instead, and continued with my stabilisation goal.  Its been going really well, but then I have just had another spell of symptoms dizzy, ears feeling blocked, nausea, fatigue, that I thought had gone.  I went back to the Dr.  She was quite certain I needed to change medication.  And had talked through a plan with our local mental health service.  She refers to them as anti depressants.  I don't feel depressed.  I do fatigue myself, I think when work is going well its a healthy outlet I am missing.  Anyway, I am still working at getting stable. I am quite shocked how pushy this doctor is.  Im hanging in there at work.  Have missed a lot of days.

One thing, the Dr referred to my reactions, it was I who had say whats been happening is a lot for anyone?  Trouble coping shouldnt mean medication should it?  I said how I am still a high performer at work, but yep, I do melt down lately.  But its quiet like a cat going off to die.  I don't make a big thing out of it at work.

I wish I could remember the name of the other medication, its selling point was that it treated additional things to what SSRI's treat.  I was so glad I had been on this forum and didn't just go along with what would be a big step back for me.

Homeandaway, I wanted to add that I read your signature and it is awesome and amazing that you are five years sober. That is an amazing achievement. Congratulations!  :D

2020: After 18+ years (entire adult life) on Paxil, a dangerous doctor-led "taper" in 2015, and four years tapering off the last 1 mg thanks to SA and the Brassmonkey slide,

2021: Began conservative, proper, CNS-respecting taper of Zoloft, led by the only expert on me -- me. Making own liquid. 5-10% plus holds.

2022: Holding on Zoloft for now. Current dose 47 mg. Hanging in, hanging on. Severe protracted PAWS, windows and waves. While I may not be doing "a lot" by outside standards, things are graaaaadually getting better

Thanks homeandaway! If you or anyone is interested in meditating, I recommend the book Eight Minute Meditation. He makes the case that meditation doesn't need to be fancy, that anyone can do it, and just 8 minutes a day can do it. :)
