SSRI drugs for football players with Concussion Ya the movie

Suggested use of SSRI as a treatment for CTE... the footballers brain damage caused by repeated blows.

I was looking at the research on CTE thinking perhaps some of that research may develop new understanding that could help us here.  A lot of money is being put forward but as we see with so many other money rich research headway is slow seemingly non existent so don't hold your breath still hail Mary hope is better than none.

I watched the movie today one thing said in the movie was there is a protein released by the body when one had CTE and this protein attacks the brain they call it a killer protein that blocks brain systems like pouring cement down a tube... that reminded me of folks here and the term CEMENT HEAD....

Ya I know not scientific but still interesting to me.

One other thing I noticed was the similarities to the resistance to acknowledging the disease... same as for WD side effects of these drugs... very much alike they mentioned in  the movie it was like the struggle to have the dangers of smoking legitimized...  that may not be the right term go ahead and correct me...

life is interesting if nothing else suggesting giving people with CTE SSRI drugs as treatment... blows my mind or would if it were not already blown...

New tests are being developed to dx this disorder in the living and that is where we may see some progress on our issues

it could happen

peace all

On an unrelated media note:

I watched a bit of big bang theory today and heard this sentence...

"Lack of REM sleep causes neuro receptors to lose their sensitivity to serotonin and norepinephrine... leading to impaired cognitive function... well that too is interesting considering some wd folk have sleep state misconception... is that the right term... I am not sure just now but one stated they did not have one stage of sleep... sorry I can't recall it all right now and the original posts and the site they were posted to are gone...

again peace all

I saw the movie "Concussion" and I remember the first player being polydrugged on Prozac, Klonopin, and a couple other psych drugs. When he got agitated, the doctor shot him up with Haldon. He was self mutilating and then later killed himself. Lots of people self mutilate on SSRIs and kill themselves because of Klonopin. Hard to know what is what.

Then later in the movie, they mentioned players using pain meds, as well as Lexapro and Zoloft for pain. So some of these players were on these drugs for years while they were playing. I wonder how many tried to come off and got hit with dependence symptoms.

btdt, I agree about the similarity in the resistance to acknowledging the disease.  Also, a lot of the players in the movie seemed to have akathisia, which may come from the trauma to the brain from football, but that also comes from psych drugs. But just like with research on schizophrenia patients, the drugs never come under question. Like I was told to stay on antipsychotics to keep from getting brain damage because I kept having episodes of psychosis. They still think the drugs are safe even while their patients are dying in front of their eyes.

It sucks that they want to continue to use antidepressants to treat CTE. This is one of the easiest kinds of illnesses to prevent by educating parents and keeping their kids off the football field. Problem solved. Same thing with putting kids on psych drugs - educating parents would keep a lot of this from happening.

But the propaganda lives on - if you get them to doubt the medications, they may start to doubt the whole system.

Really I don't recall any of this in the movie... hmm maybe I will have to watch it again.

Your right football players go thru a lot of things that maybe all are damaging their brains.  The hope I had was that the new studies they are doing will one day result in better testing something refined that will show the differences between drug and concussion I actually think they have already done created this test... more will come as money is thrown at this like mad.  The question is will the study become corrupted by even bigger money... that is yet to be seen.

" told to stay on antipsychotics to keep from getting brain damage because I kept having episodes of psychosis. "

Really?  psychosis causes brain damage... is this a common thing for them to say do they say this to everybody is it true have you looked it up?  have you asked other people here?

honestly this you are the first person to ever say so here that I have read... I am surprised... to say the least.

Jan 21, 2014 - ... brain tries to counteract. This means that you get worse when you try to stop the medication. .... Myth 10: Antipsychotics prevent brain damage.

Yes, that article is the truth, but it's coming out of the Nordic Cochrane Centre, which isn't mainstream.

Psychiatrists are still telling people dealing with psychosis that they will get brain damage from each psychotic episode, so they need to take their meds for life. And when I've stopped taking them and had a psychotic break, I was told it was a return of my illness and not antipsychotic withdrawal.

I also like Dr. Moncrieff who's written a lot about psychiatry's lies like in this article - http://www.madinamerica.com/2013/06/antipsychotics-and-brain-shrinkage-an-update/

Even though there's all of this evidence that the drugs are killing people, like she says:  "A new paper by a group of American researchers once again tries to ‘blame the disease,’ a time-honoured tactic for diverting attention from the nasty and dangerous effects of some psychiatric treatments."

If they told the truth - that these drugs are neuro-toxic poison that will kill you, who would take them? And then more importantly, how would big pharma make any money?

So unfortunately, if you have a psychotic disorder, that's what you get told. Just like people with depression get told they have a chemical imbalance and need to take a serotonin drug to fix it.

We have until the 14th. Feb 2018.

URGENT REQUEST Please consider submitting  for the petition on Prescribed Drug Dependence and Withdrawal currently awaiting its third consideration at the Scottish Parliament. You don't even have to be from Scotland. By clicking on the link below you can read some of the previous submissions but be warned many of them are quite harrowing.

http://www.parliament.scot/GettingInvolved/Petitions/PE01651

Please tell them about your problems taking and withdrawing from antidepressants and/or benzos.

Send by email to petitions@parliament.scot and quote PE01651 in the subject heading. Keep to a maximum of 3 sides of A4 and you can't name for legal reasons any doctor you have consulted. Tell them if you wish to remain anonymous. We need the numbers to help convince the committee members we are not isolated cases. You have until mid February. Thank you

None of the published articles shed light on what ssri's ... actually do or what their hazards might be. Healy 2013.

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

"Every time I read of a multi-person shooting, I always presume that person had just started a SSRI or had just stopped."  Dr Mosher. Me too!

Over two decades later, the number of antidepressant prescriptions a year is slightly more than the number of people in the Western world. Most (nine out of 10) prescriptions are for patients who faced difficulties on stopping, equating to about a tenth of the population. These patients are often advised to continue treatment because their difficulties indicate they need ongoing treatment, just as a person with diabetes needs insulin. Healy 2015

I believe the ssri era will soon stand as one of the most shameful in the history of medicine. Healy 2015

I know there is no money for it but I wonder what would show up if people who had ad and other psych drug wd had this test done...

"In the new research, published in online issue of the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, the living former players were injected with a compound developed by Small and other at UCLA for research of Alzheimer's disease. The compound, known as FDDNP, attaches itself to tau protein.

Under a PET (positron emission tomography) scan, the low dose radioactivity in the tau protein can be seen. Smalls says it works like a Geiger counter.

"What was really striking in this study was that the areas of the brain that showed the deposits were identical to that seen in that seen with the autopsy studies of patients with CTE," said Small."

They can say whatever they want and expect us to buy in as long as there are no tests to prove them wrong... my hope is that this high profile football issue deemed worthy of study and lots of money will bring is new understanding and new tests knowledge will come from it... that maybe some day can show what these drugs are actually don't to our brains.  Riding the shirt tail is better then no ride at all. imho

ps I just have to say it as many times as I possibly can the "chemical imbalance"  term was coined by a marketing company working for pharma... I read that in a book just now I can't recall which one.  What is amazing is not only did the media pick up on that with all their pharma sponsored ad money padding the nest but doctors bought in... hook line and sinker.  We did not stand a chance against all that marketing and paid for legitimizing by doctors... from the trend setters on down we were sitting ducks.
