For dizziness etc see dizziness-vertigo-light-headedness-rocking-or-swaying-sensations Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and would appreciate any feedback you could give me on the following, as I can't seem to find much information on this: I've been on Effexor XR 150mg for about 3 days now, and have developed ear pressure in my right ear. I have also been having tinitus, but have had that in the past on celexa as well. This is just an odd symptom, and was curious as to your experiences . . . Much appreciated - thanks Edited April 4, 2019 by Altostrata added links 1999: First put on SSRI - Citalopram 40mg. 2012-2014: Then to Zoloft - panic attack & then CT. Life spiraled out of control. Then Ambien - got off. Then Effexor. Cross tapered back to Citalopram 40mg from Effexor, then down to 20mg (05/2014). Everything scared me so much that I didn't further reduce for 2 years. Past 3 years 10/2016: Down to 10 mg Citalopram from 20mg. Obviously way fast. Again. 🙄 12/2016: Updose to 15 mg due to symptoms. ~Mid 2018: Down to 10mg from 15 mg. Barbarannamated
The SS/NRIs can cause bruxism (teeth clenching/ grinding) which can produce pressure or feeling of fullness in ears. Administrator Altostrata Posted December 7, 2013 Administrator Share Posted December 7, 2013 jbjennin, for adverse effects of Effexor XR, see http://www.drugs.com/pro/effexor-xr.html You may be a person who is sensitive to serotonergics and should not be taking them at all. Or, you may be taking antidepressants at dosages that are too high for your system. I suggest you think about non-drug therapeutic strategies. This is not medical advice. Ellen042
Effexor XR is known to be ototoxic (cause pain or pressure in the ear(s), tinnitus (ringing) and hearing loss) in a small percentage of patients. I wouldn't expect it to go away with time, and if you're on it for the long haul, I'd mention it to your doctor. Perhaps he'd recommend something in place of it or at least reduce the dosage. I don't get ototoxicity from SS/NRI's, but I do from other meds, so I know exactly what you're talking about. Made me want to poke a hole in my own eardrum just to relieve the pressure! That's one side effect I simply can't cope with; if I'm given a drug that causes ototoxicity, I either don't take it or discontinue it immediately. insomnia, anxiety, depression- since childhood lyme disease, dysautonomia, chiari malformation- dx 4/1997 nortriptyline- 75mg since childhood clonazepam- 3mg since 4/1997 trazodone-100mg since 4/2013, now tapering rotating antibiotics and antimalarials for lyme disease midodrine- 10mg for dysautonomia repeated skull surgeries for chiari malformation
LoveandLight
Maybe a strange place to ask, but I'm asking here as I'm terrified to take anything [for an ear infection] from the doctor or OTC. Anyone ideas of something natural that I could take? Thanks Edited February 1, 2021 by Altostrata merged related topics 2000 - sertraline for job anxiety low confidence (17 years old) ..which turned the next 16 years into nightmare! On/off sertraline severe withdrawals every time. 2014 - felt better as reduced dose of sertraline no more inner restlessness. Doctor rushed off again. Hit severe withdrawal. Lost the little I had in life. Couldn't get stable again on 12.5mg. Was switched to prozac. Had severe reaction to prozac..came off in November 2015 at 6mg as felt more confused and damaged on it..Even more withdrawal ..rage, depression, dyphoria, near constant suicidal ideation, self harm impulses, doom, concrete block in head, unable to do much of anything with this feeling in head..went back on 6mg of sertraline to see if would alleviate anything. It didn't..reduced from December to June 2016 came off at 2.5mg sertraline as was hospitalised for the severe rage, suicidal impulses, and put on 50mg lofepramine which in 2nd week reduced all symptoms but gave insomnia which still have..psych stopped lofepramine cold turkey..no increased withdrawal symptoms new symptoms from lofepramine except persistant insomnia which has as side effect. Taking Ativan for 8 months for the severe rage self harm impulses 1-3 times a week (mostly 2 times a week) at .5mg. LilyBlueRose
While I do not wish this on anyone, it has me a bit anxious that I can't seem To find many with this symptom. It makes me worry that what I am experiencing is not WD but perhaps something worse. I've had congested ears / ear pressure for a year now as well as dizziness ( as well as in motion rocky boat swaying for 4 ish months now) when it first started it was pretty unbearable. Extremely maddening. Now it's not as bad, only maddening a few days out of the month yet still always there . ( knock on wood) The ear issue started with the dizziness around 2.5 to 3 weeks after quitting the celexa. I just wish it would go away already. Ent thought maybe allergies since I wasn't as dizzy in the summer. Pcp agreed. I think they are just guessing now. So I was curious if anyone else has this issue? Thanks for reading! IrishMonkey92
Kaline, I had ear and face, head and neck all at once for a period. It didn't happen until 5 months off Citalopram. I had a heavy night of drinking alcohol and it must have triggered something and BAM swaying, rocking boat sensation. Sometimes feels like I'm rocking back and forth to the beat of my heart. I got eye floaters, ringing in the ears, pressure on my nose, temples, back of the neck and migrating pressure all around the head. I also had pressure build in my ears. That left long ago (14 months ago). I still have the swaying, rocking almost feels like a pressure of being pulled by a force or gravity to one side - can stretch down my face or neck. I only get ear pressure now if I go down a hill in the car which I do everyday to go to work!

LilyBlueRose
So frustrating! I've had the same thing since coming off of celexa a year and 3 ish months ago. I can happily say that I had a few month window recently! Sadly I had a hyperthyroid swing which caused me severe anxiety and stress and put me into a wave of super pressurized congested ears and in motion dizziness! I do not have hearing loss and I've had tinnitus in silence since I was a kid. I've been to ent and vestibular specialists. Stay positive! I am seeing windows with this and hope you will see it soon too! Do you absolutely have to fly? Id look into safe ways for helping it. For me personally Sudafed and all kinds of decongestants and ephedrine did absolutely nothing. SidTheButterfly
I have nearly constant tinnitus. My ears often feel blocked too. I was weaned off too fast, and I have reinstated at a quarter my original dose 5 days ago. Since reinstating, I've had brief patches of relief. I'm finding that mindfulness and then distraction is the only way to keep my sanity. If I focus on it constantly, I become anxious. I just try to practise mindfulness - notice it without judgment and then mentally move on. I accept this is how "silence" now sounds for me. What gives me hope is that I had shingles a year ago, and had constant crawling/tingling sensations in my ear and neck from the nerve damage. Once I stopped focusing on it, it resolved without me even noticing. I suspect this will be the same. Citalopram: Feb 2016 to May 2017. I tapered over 2 weeks under the supervision of my GP. Dosage: 20mg pd. Tapering: 20mg every 2nd day for 1 week, 20mg every 3rd day for 1 week. Reason to quit: Mitral valve prolapse - disturbing palpitations and chest pain which resolved off meds; weight gain.
Mentor RachelSusan Posted July 12, 2017 Mentor Share Posted July 12, 2017 I went through a terrible withdrawal last year and had to reinstate to get relief. One of my symptoms during the wd was pressure in the ear and like Kalinia said, it felt like I needed to pop my ears. I went to doctors as well and they found nothing wrong. It was extremely painful. LilyBlueRose
I'm so glad to hear the pressure went away for you guys! Mine never hurts. It messes with my equilibrium though and makes me dizzy or feeling like I'm in motion. Very very frustrating! I'd give anything for it to go away! It feels like my eustachian tubes aren't functioning properly. Probably some sort of dysfunction. Hopeful one day it will lessen. I've had tinnitus since I was a teen so I am used to what it's like. Some days though it is so bad and still causes anxiety. White noise music definitely helps! Thank you so much as always. Was regularly consuming alcohol as did not know I was in WD. From then onwards, hit with worse myriad symptoms. Currently at 22 months and have electromagnetic sensitivity, brain zaps, brain fog, memory problems (especially name recall), twitch in right eyebrow, daily waking up at 3 or 4 a.m. with fast heartbeats and "sticky" negative memories, suicidal thoughts, rage episodes, temperature dysregulation, physical numbness & weakness, libido loss. Mentor Heath Posted February 2, 2021 Mentor Share Posted February 2, 2021 Hello everyone ! I have had allergies for trees and grasses - spring , summer , fall since I was a child. Started Paxil when I was 30 and a year after that started having sinus infections, sinus headaches and ear issues. And had sinus surgery which didn't help. After a fast taper 5 years later sinus system started running again. So I figured out that paxil had caused dry sinuses, dry eyes, and dry mouth. Started lexapro 15 mg 2 years ago. About 4 months after that started having dry burning eyes and sinuses , popping ears and dry mouth . Along with dizziness fog in hot summer. when cold weather comes have these sinus issues when temp drops. During allergy season this sinus burning aching is so much worse. Its like my sinus system is trying to work but it can't. I went to ENT and was giving more medicine and started me on immunization drops. It took me most of the summer trying to figure things out. When I would take the immunization drops, I would get dizzy and light headed. Then 9 months after starting lexapro I had mouth surgery for an infected dental implant. I thought dizzy fog was caused from infection but ? After tapering to 10 mg this last summer had a little light headedness but a lot less. So with what Im seeing and what you all are saying is this is a side effect of ssri ! ? I don't go to ENT or take allergy pills unless absolutely have to. I have found out that saline spray, saline flush and hot steam air helps like a hot shower.
