It may take you a bit to stabilize. I'm wondering if the 300mg Wellbutrin might be contributing to the sleep problem.

How about holding on the Serzone for a couple of weeks and decreasing the Wellbutrin?

I think you are right. I will stay at this level of serzone and maybe even increase a tad until my sleeping is better. Last time i came off serzone I had tons of trouble sleeping so i think the key is to come down slower than i have been.

As you suggest, i should switch and now see how I respond to tapering off Welbutrin. This is a much easier medication to come off of compared to serzone. And it's very activating so it could be contributing to some sleep issues, as you suggest.

Thanks for the advice. I have a little more hope now.

Hi all,

Just wanted to give you all an update. I started my tapering of Serzone last December and things were going relatively well. In the past few months, though, a lot has happened in my life. I have had a big breakup, changed jobs, and now I am moving to the other side of the country. While my anxiety has been okay luckily, I have had trouble sleeping and I have been depressed. So I have kept my medication flat and have not been tapering 10% each month like I was before.

My question: I have a lot going on in my life. Should I increase my medication a little bit? I hate the idea of going backward and having all that hard work go for nothing, but I have been going through a lot lately and feel like some increased medication could help. What have other people done in this situation? If the answer is to increase my medication a little bit, how much should I increase it? Just a little bit, like 5%, and see how it goes? (My psychiatrist thinks I should increase it a little bit)

Thanks in advance.

If I were you, I'd keep the Serzone steady, and try to practice stress reduction as much as possible.

Are you still taking Wellbutrin? Sleep problems can be a side effect.

Hi everyone. Just wanted to give an update and ask for advice. When I started my tapering last December, things were going pretty smoothy. I dropped about 10mg of Serzone every month and while I was having side effects (mainly sleeping issues), things were going okay.

But since then I have had three major life changes (moved from west coast to nyc, new job, relationship breakup) and am not doing too well, mainly with severe insomnia issues. Some nights I don't sleep at all, other nights only a couple hours. I am very sensitive about looking tired to other people and that only makes my anxiety to sleep worse.

I have been taking ambien here and there but really prefer not to and it makes me feel weird the next day as well as gives me insomnia the next day. My psychiatrist suggested I try trazadone but I'm really hesitant to become dependent on other drug. Another option would be to increase the serzone a bit which would help the sleep. I could also lower the Wellbutrin but my psychiatrist strongly urges me to not reduce any dosage when I am going through such tough times (and I tend to agree).

The final option is to keep the dosages the same but continue to work on my sleeping habits (waking up same time every day, keep bedroom temp cool, etc). I have tried some of those so far and, while they help, they haven't solved the problem yet.

Any suggestions out there? As I'm sure many of you have experienced, insomnia is a very difficult withdrawal effect. I would like to know how others handle it. And does it eventually go away?

Thank you for your thoughts.

Did your updose 8/15 70 mg help at all?

Serzone and trazodone have serious interactions, see http://www.drugs.com/interactions-check.php?drug_list=2228-0,1698-9757

Trazodone carries a lot of risk, see the discussion following http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/2605-rebelmaven-gabapentin-neurontin-withdrawal-taper/page__view__findpost__p__27431

My increase to 70mg helped a little bit at the time but that was before my move. Adding this "stressor" to my life (ie: the move) has made things more difficult, mainly the sleeping. I prefer to to get dependent on the sleeping pills as those don't make me feel good the next day. Part of me is wondering if I should increase the serzone while I am going through this adjustment. It's just really hard to function in life when you are getting such little sleep. I know you are not a doctor but in your experience and from what you've read, is it a bad idea to increase your amount when you are trying to taper in general but going through a hard time?

Thank you for the warning on trazadone.

Hi all,

I haven't posted in about year and thought I should give an update.  Almost two years ago I started coming off Nefazadone (generic Serzone) and was able to get down to 50 mg until some big life changes happened (breakup, new job, moved to different side of country).  I could not sleep so decided to go back up to 100 mg to help the sleeping.  That only helped the sleep a little so I started doing Ambien which helped slightly but it made me dependent on that drug and the sleep was never as deep as I wanted.  I believe it also made me have suicidal thoughts which was scary.

Fast forward about five months ago and there was a major illness in my family that caused me to move back home.  Despite the family illness, i have less stressors in my life now being back home so I decided to continue with my tapering.  Since tapering the serzone has always caused major sleep issues, I decided to taper the Buproprion (generic Wellbutrin) this time since it is activating and can cause insomnia.

Overall, the tapering of the Buproprion hasn't been as bad as the Serzone.  I feel like my sleeping has improved and anxiety has gone down slightly.  I was hoping to get off this drug in a relatively short amount of time as it's known to be one of the easier antidepressants to get off.  Unfortunately, I have seen my depression increase as I've lowered the Buproprion.

I have a few questions:

1) Oddly, i've noticed that I feel the depressed at certain times of the day but not others.  I've noticed that usually i feel depressed for the four or five hours after I take my Nefazadone, but okay the rest of the day.   Lately, I have been taking 50mg of nefazadone around 10am and 50 mg of nefazadone around 5pm.  Is the abnormal to feel withdrawal effects at different magnitudes throughout the day?  Why does the nefazadone make me feel worse after I take it?  Should I change the time of when I take it?

2)  Is it okay to start tapering the nefazadone again (and stop the Bupoprion taper), now that I am on a lower Buproprion?   I prefer to get off the nefazadone first since it causes me (moderate) sexual side effects.  I believe this site suggests only doing one at a time but I'm wondering if tapering back and forth (but not at the same time) is okay.  The sexual side effects always hurt my relationships with the opposite sex so I"m eager to get off the Nefazadone.

3)  With my depression returning, I'm starting to have doubts that I can come off these drugs.  How do I know if my depression is withdrawal or if it's just my depression coming back?  it's not fun to be depressed the majority of the day and not enjoy life.  I just want to make sure it's all worth it.  =)

Thank you for your help.  This site has been extremely helpful to me.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

See http://www.drugs.com/pro/nefazodone.html

The depressed feelings may be a side effect of the nefazodone. Or, as buproprion is stimulating, may be a "let down" after going off it.

Are you taking any other drugs? They could be interacting with nefazodone. Use the Drug Interactions Checker http://www.drugs.com/drug_interactions.html

Hi, thank you for your response.  For some reason I didn't get notified that there was a response so that's why I didn't respond earlier.

Anyways, the weird depressed feeling I got after taking the nefazadone has gone away.  I started taking the nefazadone only on a full stomach and only with food and that seemed to help.  I have also begun tapering the nefazadone by about 10% at first and then another 5%.  After doing the extra 5% I began having sleep issues, irritability, and depression so decided to raise it 5%.  The strategy of increasing the dosage very slightly (like 5%) if I feel withdrawal for more than two or three weeks seems to work for me.

The good news is that I have felt a slight increase in sexual libido and function.  I hope this keeps up.

Thank you.

Hi all,

I'm having a bit of a crisis and am looking for some help.

I am currently at about 20mg nefazadone and about 170mg bupropion sr. With a new job I switched health care providers and now use CVS. For Bupropion, CVS uses manufacturer Mylan instead of Actavis (which I was previously using).

Since switching to Mylan about ten days ago, I have only been able to sleep a few hours a night. I have been getting ill due to this lack of sleep. I cannot do this much longer.

I am not sure why switching to Mylan has had this affect. The Mylan pill is slightly smaller than the Actavis so perhaps my estimation of 170mg is off. My hunch though is that perhaps the Mylan cannot be divided up while the Actavis can.

Has anyone had any problems from switching manufacturers of the same pill? Anyone have any advice on what I should do? I could go up to 200mg do I wouldn't have to cut it up but I would hate to increase the med and waste all that time and effort I put in to get it down to 170mg. At the same time, I really need my sleep for work, etc.

Thanks.

Hi.  Does anyone know if it's okay to cut a Buproprion SR pill with a nail file?

I have been using a nail file to get my cuts to be more precise.  I have a couple scales so i know the weight of the pill is the same as before but I feel different since i've been using a nail file.  Perhaps cutting with a nail file reduces the potency?

I use a nail file on my nefazadone and everything is fine there.  Maybe Buproprion SR is different.

Hi all,

Just wanted to share some good news with the group.  After years of tapering, I am finally off the nefazadone.  It took me a long time, but i am finally off (been three months now).  It was a lot of effort and tough times but well worth it.  Feels good to be off.  My sexual function has not returned which is saddening but other than that i am glad to be off.

I have a question.  i am still taking the buproprion SR (83 mg morning, 60 mg afternoon).  Should i wait a while before tapering off this drug in case i am still adjusting to being off the nefazadone?  Or should i just go ahead and start?  What is recommended?

Thanks!

Thank you for checking in!  Years of tapering and I am finally med-free!  It was a tough and long journey but it is finally over.

I've been off for a couple months now.  I would say that I am still adjusting to being off as my depression and anxiety are a little higher than normal.  But hopefully that goes away with time.

Also, my libido is not back to normal which is frustrating.

How long does it take someone to adjust after they are off the meds?

Thanks.

Hi @ChessieCat   I have updated my signature and read your two links.  Thank you.

I am now completely off the Serzone and Buproprion.  I always thought that when you got off the drugs, life would be more or less normal.  Unfortunately, I have had increases in anxiety and depression as well hypnic jerks which make it difficult to sleep.   I also have not seen my libido come back fully.

Hopefully this is just a stage and things will improve.  From your article, it sounds like it can take a year.  Would love to hear more about people's experiences once they are completely off the meds and what their recovery was like.  Thanks.

Congratulations greenwell!

I don't have any answers for you, but I'm also hoping that it will all go away with time 🤞. Are you content with your overall life? Do you enjoy things?

Yes, reading other people's journeys, I get the impression that that problem can take longer to go. I'm not even at the point of thinking about it yet.

Cheers, Marmot

I am more anxious and depressed but only like 20% more.  When I drive, I worry about getting into accidents.  I seem to be more sensitive with my mood than before.  That being said, I'm feeling better than when I first stopped taking the drugs a couple months ago.  So hopefully things get better with time.

The hypnic jerks make it really hard to sleep and recover.  Hopefully that passes with time.  Again, we'll see.

@Carmie  hi.  Thank you for asking.  I’ve been off for a year and a half now and other than sexual dysfunctions I am doing well.  I never thought I would be able to get off the meds but I was able to do it.  The key for me was to go slow.  Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi greenwell,

Great to hear you’re doing pretty well. Yes, slow and steady really is the key. I’m so glad you were able to get off the meds
